This really happened. I have a feeling it will go viral very soon:
(H/T: Greg Hengler)
Updated: After we posted the original version of the video above, our friends at Mediaite (while giving The Blaze a welcome Hat Tip) looked at the section of the CNN program in question. The longer version below makes it clear that the CNN team played the clip just as they intended!
Imagine being a CNN producer. You’ve got an upcoming medical segment on an unusual treatment for a man’s digestive disease. An illness, that CNN anchor Ali Velshi will tell you in the story’s intro, involves “ten to fifteen bloody bowel movements a day.”
Already, we’re clearly in comedic territory, right? After all, what’s funnier than ulcerative colitis, an inflammatory bowel disease? Just you wait!
Well, in this case, since it involves the schoolyard comedy gold mine that is digestion, somebody at CNN figured it’d be a downright hoot to start the segment with a clip from the film Dumb and Dumber, showing Jeff Daniels graphically suffering from a sudden bout of diarrhea. And naturally, we’ll make sure you can hear the hilarious sounds of bowl-filling.

Submitting your tip... please wait!

Posted on December 9, 2010 at 3:12pmIs that what the Daily Show is? No wonder they have so many viewers. Pretty funny to put clips of major motion pictures in with the news of the day from POTUS.

Posted on December 9, 2010 at 3:00pmIt’s got to be a prank. Either on CNN or us. If it was done to CNN, brilliant, but beware FOX, you could be next.

Posted on December 9, 2010 at 3:21pmThis is almost definitely it. What happened there took three people. One guy running the tape (Production Assistant, maybe?), the Technical Director running the switcher, and the Producer calling the shots.
Your PA-or-whoever has the tape queued. (S)he knew it was going out. The TD may or may not have, but they usually can see what’s going up before it goes. Question there was, did he take the Producer’s call on blind faith? Did the Producer see the feed coming off the b-roll machine in advance? Or was this a case where the b-roll ran from black before either TD or Producer could see it?
I suppose it‘s possible the guy working the video feed got pranked and didn’t know what was coming soon as well.
No matter the case, one, two, or three people at CNN didn‘t do their job and it’s likely all three are in hot water, at a minimum. Not exactly the high standard a “news organization” supposedly holds.
Doubtful this crosses over to Fox or MSNBC. Well, at Fox it would be noticed. MSNBC? Best summed up by the old question, “If a tree falls over in the middle of the forest and nobody’s there to hear it, does it make a sound?”
My only question is, you’ve worked your whole career to get to CNN (trust me, they have), why pull a prank like this that would make you toxic in the top 75 or so markets? This is the equivalent to a Major Leaguer deliberately making a mistake big enough to get himself sent back to Single-A ball.

That whole post is an excellent explanation, as is your final comparison. You’ve just got to wonder how he/they could be so stupid.

Posted on December 9, 2010 at 3:18pmThere’s a connection between Al Gore and the scene from Dumb and Dumber: What caused that diarrhea was a big dose of Super Turbo Colon Blow as I recall. To help Al Gore get back on tract he’ll need the same.
