CNN Anchor Grills Black Caucus Chair on ‘Chains’ Remark: Don‘t Tell Me That if it Were Romney ’People Would Not Be Going Crazy’

O'Brien Cleaver Biden chains

CNN anchor Soledad O’Brien has had her share of on-air run-ins with conservatives, but it was a Democrat, not a Republican, in the hot seat on Thursday — the chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, no less.

O’Brien grilled Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.) on Vice President Joe Biden’s “chains” remark, asking him as one of the top black congressmen what he made of it. Cleaver’s answer? “Absolutely nothing.”

“I would never have even paid attention to it but for the fact that campaigns nowadays are waiting for any kind of little nugget to create an atmosphere of more and more discord,” Cleaver said. “It makes absolutely no sense that some kind of a little throwaway line is now being used to make Vice President Biden appear to have been throwing out these words in order to somehow attract dumb African Americans who if they hear the words chains are going to automatically vote for him and President Obama.”

O’Brien said Cleaver was “extrapolating” with the “dumb African Americans” description, and continued: “You cannot tell me that if in fact we were talking about Mitt Romney saying a line like that…that people would not be going crazy and crying about race-baiting and talking about tone and tenor and coded language. I think we would, wouldn’t we?”

Cleaver said he wasn’t “sure” about that, and that any such remark would depend on the context.

“I know Vice President Biden and when you look at the video….there’s only a sprinkling of African Americans there, clearly in the minority of that crowd,” Cleaver said.

O’Brien pointed out that press reports indicated the crowd was roughly 50 percent black, at which point Cleaver switched tactics.

“Why would the vice president go into a setting like that where presumably half the people wouldn’t have any understanding or feelings about what was going on?” Cleaver said. “The reality is that the discourse in our politics has become unsophisticated, unpolished, unnecessary and rather than trying to raise the discord to some degree both sides look for little things that would remove the discussion from the things that matter to something that’s completely asinine.”

TheBlaze’s Will Cain, a contributor on the CNN panel, said it was hard to reconcile Cleaver‘s position that the campaign rhetoric has grown ugly while at the same time brushing aside Biden’s remark.

“I don‘t understand how you can say our national discourse is poor and then say that’s no big deal,” Cain said.

“I’ve been black all my life so that comment I can tell you would have no impact on me,” Cleaver said. “[Biden] was saying Wall Street has created a major problem in this country and Mitt Romney wants to come in and give those guys carte blanche to do it again and it would put you back in chains, you’d have another Wall Street collapse that would impact the nation and the world.”

Cleaver continued, “I know that that statement by the vice president had absolutely no impact — there‘s not a single black person in this country who’s going to say ‘by golly I’ve got to vote for Obama and Biden because Biden said something about going to put y’all back in chains.”

Rep. Cleaver missed the whole point, most probably on purpose. No one thinks Biden meant that the Republicans were going to put anyone at all in physical chains. Biden used black dialect and words he doesn’t use in his everyday conversation (y’all) to insight anger against the Republicans. Whenever I make a comment against an Obama policy or his ideology, most progressives throw the racist tag right from the get go. They’ve cheapened the meaning of racism every time they do this. Whenever I read a progressive calling a conservative a racist I go right past the remark as nothing but fodder because they’ve destroyed the meaning of it. When people like Biden and Hillary Clinton use black dialect and nothing is ever said about it, the NAACP does nothing but belittle themselves. One day they may wake up and realize their true enemy.

Cleaver is correct. Biden could have used the n-word in every other sentence – it will not change the way [most] blacks will vote. Why even waste time courting that bloc?

I don’t think Biden meant chains as in slavery, he meant chains as in prison. Wtih a new DOJ, we might start enforcing laws again.

Where are ENCINOM, JROOK, JOE.R.PIEHOLE, and WANGO on this story? Figured that they would certainly be here telling us how we took this statement out of context too.
Speaking of context, just heard former Virginia Governor Douglas Wilder excoriate Biden for his statement and attempted use of southern terms and a slight accent to pander to a predominately black audience. He pointed out in particular the “Y’all back in chains” to mean that he, Biden is white and will be fine. He will not be in those chains, just the black members of the audience. Wilder was courteous, but not really nice about Biden.

That’s the problem with MSM today. I do not know exactly why they want to keep the left in power, I am sure there are a lot of reasons, but they clearly do. All media is filtered and slanted a certain way in order to influence the members of the public who do not seek out all outlets of information to make informed decisions. I’ll tell you what I think is funny. A couple of a days ago everyone was slamming Solidad as a democratic lame stream media hack for calling out John Sununu on his fact free diatribe about President Obama “gutting Medicare,” which she put him in his place on, with facts, figures and three nonpartisan sources that have declared his talking point a lie.

Now she’s a great journalist. Yesterday she was shilling for the Democrats, today she deserves acclaim. Did she really change that much in a couple of days? Or are your opinions of a journalists dependent on who they are asking hard questions of? Be honest.

Anyway, would a Republican be slammed for any reference to slavery? Heck no! Allen West said Social Security, the most successful and popular program ever enacted by the US government, was a form of “slavery.” Did the press freak out? Heck no. Allen West make so many outrageous statements nobody even cares any more just like your local news station doesn’t report on the kook preaching about the end of the world.

Allen West has achieved that status, as have many other Tea Party legislators have. If their comments are reported at all, it’s just for amusement, like a Jennifer Annison wardrobe malfunction. Sorry Solidad, it happens on such a regular basis it isn’t even news anymore when it happens on the right..

Oh boy. Soledad O’Brien went “off da chain” and off script from the “chosen people” ran network she works for. Don’t look for her to have a job much longer. She must stick to the script and the agenda.

Let’s face it, Biden is the biggest jack@ss around and he makes gaffes on a daily basis. He should be working in a circus as a clown, because that would be more up to his intellectual ability.

Funny how none of the “chosen people” owned Marxist Media outlets don‘t play any of Biden’s gaffes. They‘d rather focus on Romney’d 1 gaffe he had in England. That is the agenda. Keep focusing on the 1 mistake of Romney rather than the hundreds of Biden. They could run a 2 hour special of all of Biden‘s gaffes he’s made. If you’d splice together all the 1 line, 1 second gaffes by Biden, you’d have 2 hours of tape/film.

Here is proof that the democrats are hypocrites on this issue (as if any more was really needed: Six years ago George Allen running for another term as US Senator from Virginia, twice used the word macaca to refer to S.R. Sidarth, an Indian-American, who was filming the event as a “tracker” for the Jim Webb campaign. The left and the MSM went nuts. Allen, who had a lead at that point, lost the election because the Webb campaign and the democrats played that clip night after night. There was no more substantive discussion of issues throughout the rest of the race, just the nightly repetition of the Allen macaca gaffe.

He also said it was OK since only a a few “sprinkling” of blacks were present.

The Democrats blame the economic mess on Republicans when so much of this blame goes back to the Clinton Affordable Housing legislation passed by a Democrat House and the ensuing housing legislation pressured by the ACORN community antagonizing groups . Home loans to “ poor minorities ” were forced by using the Discrimination Card and the typical Democrat bullying tactics we have become irritatingly familiar with since the Chicago Obama crew occupied the White House . The leftist/Socialists bought out the media, magazines, newspapers and controlled it so news could be blacked out. They could not shut it down, so they bought it out. Now we have little or nothing for the right, but they need to start taking some of their money and producing magizines of their own to compete as well as other media, like newspapers, etc. Those in small towns have been bought out by the left for the most part and those in small towns have no real news that is not slanted or geared towards enhancing the leftist agendas.

Most black people in America are not slave decendents anyway. Most of them just want an excuse to use a race card, anyone’s. Who cares. They do not own chains, slavery or anything black or sadness. They have no monopoly over who can say what. So that mindless Joebot said something else stupid. What is the big deal. If it had not been that it would have been something else. He was wanting someone to relate to something, a desperate attempt at division of the people. Most can see through it.

Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, why can’t you just tell the truth and say “Joe Biden is a verbally-challenged bumbling knucklehead who says something dumb or racist every other day, and his words cannot be defended.” ? Why can’t you say that?

Perhaps your voting constituency in Missouri can elicit an answer?

Alan would have made a great President. This Obama is a fake. West is no self-pitying man who uses his race for brownie points. He expects all people to stand up like men and take care of their own business. He is a retired Colonel and has seen what is going on and will stand for what is right and just. He is not prone to playing favorites for votes. I like Alan West from what I have seen of him and heard when he speaks. This is a strong man of faith, pro-family and a patriotic American who will put these users in their place. He does not care what color they are. He has a sense of justice about him that makes him who he is.

Just because black people won‘t be moved by Biden’s statement doesn‘t mean it’s not offensive. I’m white and I find offensive.

Moved? Where are you going? Moved why? Words coming from an idiot who is wanting people to be moved are making the moved people idiots. These people want divisiveness and are thinking blacks can get frothed by their words. As I said most blacks are not decendents of slaves. These people came into this country on their own from every island that supports life so they could be where they have a chance in life. Who in their right mind could believe otherwise. Their ancestors came her own their own. We owe them nothing. They may owe us, however blacks. whites and other ethnics who are already American citizens for giving them a chance. If they do not like America, then they can haul their azzes from whence they came.
