CNN Host Criticizes Own Network for ‘Ganging Up’ on Perry During GOP Debate

CNN host Howard Kurtz spent air time on Sunday to criticize his own network and fellow host Wolf Blitzer over last week’s GOP presidential debate. According to Kurtz, CNN and Blitzer spent too much time singling out Rick Perry. The way he put it: it was “obvious” that the other candidates “had some company” when it came to “ganging up” on Perry.

“Michele Bachmann, Mitt Romney, and the others were ganging up on Rick Perry,” Kurtz said. “But there’s no question they had some company. If you look at many of Wolf Blitzer’s questions, they singled out the Texas governor even when the moderator was addressing Perry’s Republican rivals.”

But Kurtz didn’t only focus his critique on his own network. He also characterized questions from the Tea Party audience as “useless.”

“When you talk about building drama, I want to make this clear, I’m all for audience members asking questions,” he said. “I don’t think journalists have a monopoly on wisdom. But many of these questions from the Tea Party reps were so vague as to be kind of useless.”

Do you know why they ganged up on him? Cuz this is his first debate. Jeez these political pundits are just blind to the fact that Perry has not had to actually own up to his choices and actions in Texas. All the other candidates have been out there laying it forth on their beliefs. Of course Rick is going to get hammered.

Yes……..FOX, Beck, Levin, Limbaugh……….ALL trying to push us towards Perry and away from Romney. The so-called “conservative” media and talking heads are NOT vetting, so I personally am thrilled to see/hear Perry have to answer some questions! (Interesting that he “lied” about the $5K Merck crony stuff…….that $5K was waaaaaaaaaaay off!)

Poor Perry……..isn’t he a big TUFF TEXAN that can talk himself out of anything?

STOP COMPLAINING, THEY DO THIS TO ALL FRONT RUNNERS…

No one did it in the first debate but the second debate they were all over Romney, if Bachmann was first they would go after her. This is just the way of debates and politics. If only we could follow Reagan’s 11th Commandment.

Interesting article… There is some great background on the Perry Bush family feud ( http://tiny.cc/98m3u )

I see right through this. As any conservative should. CNN would never let someone go on air knocking their hosts, and pointing out their bias.
This is a way to get people to spread the word that CNN is fair minded. Note how the host sets up situations so those defending CNN could clear the air.
Take the comment from Kurtz that say’s, “Let‘s not pretend we’re neutral observers here”, that is just a tactic to allow Ben Smith to pretend that there is no bias…. B.S.
This was merely a way for CNN to give those on the left talking points when discussing the liberal bias. They knew it was obvious, and they had to fix it.
I was not trying to respond to, “dagwood”, I just did not know how to post a new comment. Sorry.

Yeah the lamestream is wanting to save Perry’s vetting for the general election because they and Obama have way more than enough baggage on him to knock him out. The only reason Perry is leading in many of the polls is because he hasn’t been vetted yet. Mitt Romney is the true frontrunner because he is truly vetted and of those he is the only candidate who can truly defeat Obama.

Personally I think Rick Perry is a very evil and wicked man and will sell his soul for a $5000 donation. Anyone who is supporting Perry is in effect making Obama’s reelection much closer to a reality.

It is refreshing to see comments from voters who are well informed.

I am very happy with the manner in which Michele Bachmann went after Perry and got the vetting process on him in gear.

Shame on Beck, Rush, Levin and Fox for cheerleadng for this Perry hypocrite. We already knew the media is holding back on Perry so it should surprise no one that they were not pleased with the amount of facts that came out on him in the last debate.

Let’s hope much more comes out on him in the one this Thursday as well.

Where I disagree most with the tea party is talk of 3rd party especially when talking about Romney being the president how much do you really like obama because you are essentially talking about re electing obama. Now I remember when everyone liked romney last election when we had crappy mccain but at a time liek this we need the best equipped candadate to win and that involves fundraising and also a good track record on economics and romney is that candidate is he perfect with his record in mass no but who would be if your a governer of a blue state everyone loves chris christie and think he is a conservative but look at his record he is in a blue state he will have policies you and I dont agree with. But that doesnt mean they aren’t conservative they just know they need to get things done and by doing it there way or the highway wont get it done it requires inching back to conservatism. We have to decide revolution or take back one step at a time. Romney is conservative enough for me to like him and want him to beat barrack even perry as well so quit destroying the two candadates that are the only ones who will beat barrack at this moment. and stop with third party talk thats exactly what barrack obama wants. any candadate who starts a third party will get money from barrack obamas camp for fundraising guarenteed.

I won’t vote for Romney because he was next in line. The man has been pandering for the last three years. The establishment republicans want Romney because he’s “clean” and “looks presidential” but he is also a RINO and leans left. If Romney doesn’t lean left how did he ever get voted as Gov. of Mass? And he passed, with a smile on his face, Romneycare because that is what , according to him, the people of the state wanted. It’s what the democrat legislators wanted and he signed the bill, mandating that Mass citizens buy health insurance.

I am not endorsing everything he did I dont like it all but he will be able to turn around this economy better than anyone else runnign cause he knows how to run things and turn them around.
no capital gains tax, low corporate tax, lower taxes, repeal obamacare, cut redtape hurting businesses, not appologising for america what more do you need seriously how you can say he is left leaning is a joke what is your standard anarchy?

He would be very foolish not to take advantage and get his stand on everything out. Even his stand on the border fence probably made more people realize you can‘t put a fence in the middle of the Rio Grandee river or if the federal goverment won’t deport illegals then Texas has to educate them or support them which would be better. On welfare or in school. In fact he did send a bill asking for payment from the federal goverment asking to be reimbursed for what they are costing Texas.

If it is true that illegal immigration is your cause and you think Perry is weak on the subject, then you are beating the wrong dog. The real enemies to stopping illegal immigration are:

Plyler v. Doe ‘82 which made it UNCONSTITUTIONAL to charge illegal children more to go to school than citizen’s children (that is why both the conservative legislature passed and Perry signed an ammendment to the orig. 2001 law in 2005 and when the whole in-state-tuition came about) and #2 the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 (known as welfare reform) which took the ability to identify someone as illegal from the States to the Federal Government.

This is why the fights of Georgia, Oklahoma, Arizona and Alabama that are presently going on in the courts is so important. The State can petition the Feds to declare someone “ illegal”, but cannot do it themselves. If the Feds refuse to do it, the state must treat an illegal like anyone else, by law. While you may be able to get away with some things when only 2% of your population is hispanic (like not following SCOTUS rulings), when it is 40% there are many more eyes dotting i‘s and crossing t’s. Support the States in their fight for their right of self-determination on this one and it will do more to stop tax payer money going to illegals than any one person ever could.

      SLR,
I agree with you, I would like to see it all stopped. But you cannot only follow the law when it fits your ideals. You cannot scream something is unconstitutional and then ignore a decision by the SCOTUS because you don’t like it.

The Texas legislature passed in 2001 a bill that by omission, excluded illegals from getting in-state tuition and Perry signed it. The Attorney General reviewed the law as many groups were grumbling about the Constitutionality of the law and he found that it violated the Plyler judgement which would make it unconstitutional, so an ammendment was passed by the legislature in 2005 that by the definition of “residency” included illegals as “residents” of the State, thereby giving them “in-state tuition”, and Perry signed it.

Yes, it sucks. The point is though that you cannot scream about someone not following the Constitution on one hand and then when he does do something unpopular for exactly that reason (following the Constitution, per the advice of someone with far more understanding of the law than you or I) scream bloody murder. If we don’t like it then the law must be challenged and overturned. In this case that means reversing an opinion in the supreme court. So support the States unless you think, the next POTUS should just issue an Executive order.

Axe phantom-did you watch the CNN debate where the audiences booed at Perry’s response to the illegal immigration question? It was because he was justifying illegal immigration and defending the “rights” of illegal immigrants.

Taxpayers like me are getting fed up with the number of illegals in this country which in turn drive up school and healthcare costs and also in turn diminishes the quality and accessibility of healthcare and places a burden on school systems which can not afford to accommodate the increased student population especially when The student does not speak English.

Yes, I watched and like I said, I agree with you, the situation is out of control. This last legislative session in Texas, there were about 50 bills introduced in Texas to cut off various benefits to illegals. There is a supermajority of Republicans in the legislature. How many got through? ZERO and not for the reasons you are attributing to Perry. Think small businesses.

When the Federal government will not declare someone illegal, therefore entitling them to welfare of every kind, what is a Governor supposed to do? He can round ‘em up but can’t ship ‘em out, he can’t hold them without charge, (as things stand now) he can’t Constitutionally deny them public welfare services based on State determination of citizen status; without help from the Feds (which after years of asking has yet to materialize) you have two choices, leave them on welfare or get them off another way. What is the best way for anyone to get off welfare? Education, make them into tax payers. That is the point I got from Mr. Perry.

There are 13 states that currently offer in-state tuition to illegals, all of the border states, except Arizona (which may change if they lose their current court battle), including some you wouldn’t think of like Nebraska and Utah. There are reasons for that and they have nothing to do with being soft when it comes to illegal immigration.

I thought both the CNN and the MSNBC debates were rediculous. I’ll never understand why the GOP keeps going into the lions den. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_DSa5zq_5LE

Is this a CNN mind -trick or are some at CNN actually starting to see the truth?

It is a mind trick. MSM will not be overly critical of Perry until he gets GOP nod. MSM will be attacking Romney.

CNN is bloody scared at this time as their ratings are rounding the toilet bowl quickly. Truly, the Emmys are better produced than the garbage issued by CNN. Go FOX NEWS!!!

Heck, the CNN debate looked fair and balanced compared to the one MSNBC. Every question Brian Williams and that other schmuck asked sounded more like an accusation than a request for information.

I agree. I actually thought the CNN debate was good. MSNBC was awful.I wanted to punch out Brian Williams. I wish that candidates like Santorum would get more questions.
