CNN’s Cooper on Second Nuclear Plant Explosion: ‘Should I Get Out of Here?’

Via Mediaite:
Anderson Cooper has made a career out of risking his life to gather news, and rarely has the CNN anchor appeared as rattled as he did tonight reporting from Japan. Discussing the possible meltdown ongoing at Fukushima’s Dai-Ichi plant with nuclear expert Jim Walsh, Cooper received the news of new smoke from a second reactor on the same complex. Upon hearing the news, Cooper turned to his crew, asked where the wind was blowing, and, in a moment of visible frailty, asked if it was time for him to go.

Posted on March 14, 2011 at 1:26amIt‘s unbelievable that’s he’s asking those kind of questions on camera. I would have asked them long before now. He should have been equipped with those answers before he went.
It only goes to show how unprepared that these news people really are. Hasn’t this guy been beaten up enough already?

Posted on March 14, 2011 at 12:42amOops! Uh-oh! I just found out that Unit 3 is fueled with MOX (Mixed-oxide fuel)! So-o-o-o, I think I’d give this one a wide berth! The daughter products present in MOX are a whole different story, really nasty! This one needs a close watch! It is already in trouble as it has been vented and flooded with seawater, causing a hydrogen explosion. While the primary containment vessell is apparently still intact, the secondary containment has suffered rapid deconstruction (an explosion)! With that explosion, any material vented with the steam from the primary containment vessell will be dispersed into the atmosphere. I’d rather NOT be downwind of that event!

Posted on March 14, 2011 at 12:20am“Anderson Cooper has made a career out of risking his life to gather news” – Uh huh, like his annual sex-joke-gross-out-fest every New Year’s Eve with the vile Kathy Griffin or his sex-joke laced attacks on the Tea Party and anyone who opposes his “president”? Mr. Cooper does not want to be taken seriously – he is a nasty, unpleasant, little man. That being said, if Mr. Cooper does not want to risk his safety or health, perhaps he should not choose to put himself in dangerous situations.

Posted on March 13, 2011 at 11:53pmI am usually with most of the posters here on the Blaze (except for the troll, of course) but I am wondering why we can’t be a little more mature in our responses. I say this considering the emmense number of lost lives (over 10K already) and the gravity of this disaster. Not only that but this disaster will surely dash any hopes some of us may have had for a renewal of nuclear as an option in the future. It seems that it will be dead in the water no matter how well we can do with tehnology regarding disposal or reuse of waste.
It is not over for the Japanese and it is important for any news agency, no matter how left leaning, to have access and be safe over there. This way we can stay on top of events and progress.
Let’s grow up for just a short while. Just looking for a little light somewhere in these dim times.

No disrespect intended of course. Nuclear energy is safe and remember, they had a 9.0 earth quake. I would think we would have enough sense to build where earth quakes aren’t likely. Of course the alternative is to do without power because wind and solar just doesn’t work. So what’s our choice?

Posted on March 14, 2011 at 12:47amTNR,
I usually don’t have problems with lambasting A. Cooper on other article threads. I just am not finding most of the above posts funny at all….just mean spirited. So, rather than repeat myself I will let it go. This disaster started as something quite serious and most of the posts made in other related articles (regarding Japan) have been serious and sympathetic by Blazers, by-and-large. I was taken aback by the plain mean spirits in most of the early posts on this particular thread.
This disaster is some serious stuff and really calls for a more mature response (except for what can be expected from the usual trolls). Now if some of our progressive leaders in the US start making stupid statements or decisions regarding this disaster let’s all climb on their cases. A. Cooper is just doing his job. He’s there….I am not. That says something, however little.

I have been switching from CNN to Fox to watch the coverage of this event and CNN has been pretty fair and balanced for the most part. Anderson is risking his life to bring us this news and we need to be praying for him and all American and Japanese that this natural disaster doesn’t turn into a manmade catastrophe, and not ridiculing him and name calling like a bunch of fourth graders.
This is PRECISELY why Iran should not been nuclear armed or powered. You think a nut like Ahmadinejad has emergency procedures in place for if a nuclear reactor is damaged by a natural disaster to contain the release to prevent radiation sickness!!!

caesium-137 is a strong emitter of gamma radiation.
It’s decay passes through various isotopes of iodine and of xenon.
It has a half-life of roughly 30 years
Radiocaesium does not accumulate in the body as effectively as many other fission products (such as radioiodine and radiostrontium).
As with other alkali metals, radiocaesium washes out of the body relatively quickly in sweat and urine.
However, radiocaesium follows potassium and tends to accumulate in plant tissues, including fruits and vegetables.
Accumulation of caesium-137 in lakes has been a high concern after the Chernobyl disaster. Experiments with dogs showed that a single dose of 3800 μCi (4.1 μg of caesium-137) per kilogram is lethal within three weeks; smaller amounts may cause infertility and cancer.
Iodine-131 aka radioiodine
decays with a half-life of 8.02 days with beta and gamma emissions.
absorbed by the body and preferentially concentrated in the thyroid
As it decays, it may cause damage to the thyroid
chance of occurrence of radiogenic thyroid cancer in later life or of non-cancerous growths and thyroiditis.
Preventing iodine-131 exposure is by saturating the thyroid with regular, non-radioactive iodine-127. This prevents the thyroid from absorbing the radioactive iodine-131, thereby avoiding the damage caused by radiation to the body. This treatment method is most commonly accomplished by administering potassium iodide to those at risk.

Anderson Cooper may be a lot of things, including being an adrenalin junky who inserts himself in the most volatile and dangerous newsworthy places he can find. Describe him however you like, but “namby pamby” is about the least accurate adjective you could use. He recklessly endangers his own life. I thank the Sisters of St. Joseph’s and regular deserved beatings for my knowledge & knowing right from wrong ;)
@StrictlyBusiness I was NOT Blaming the Japanese Govt. They are not idiots and are making the best decisions with what is available under the circumstances. YOU however are inflating the issue. It IS bad, but considering these plants got hit with a 9.1 Quake and STILL took 12+ hours to simply blow JUST the pressure container, says a LOT about the SAFETY of using NUKE Power.
There’s Still the main Core intact, and it’s containment pool,(or there would be nothing to FILL with seawater) it is only some of the rod casings that have melted (so FAR) It takes a week or more for a reaction to cool, they are doing pretty good in MY book.
I was calling BS on the CNN reporter calling it a mild form of radiation.
No Gamma emitters are mild, but they can be handled properly and safely IF you are aware.
Knowledge is Power !
We are a ways away from a full on core meltdown, it’s possible, but Brave people there are doing what they can to avert it. Using seawater guarantees that once quiet, these plants will need to be decomissioned. That says something of the nature of the necessity to keep cooling the core and to the lengths they are willing to go to KEEP the reactor SAFE.
I STILL believe every state in the US should be building TWO plants !
