CNN’s John King Defends Asking Newt About Ex: ‘Damned If You Do, Damned If You Don‘t’

One of the most memorable moments from Thursday’s debate came during the opening minutes. CNN’s John King asked Newt Gingrich about his ex-wife’s accusations about wanting an open marriage, and Newt let him have it. Now, we‘re getting King’s side of the story.

During a recap with Anderson Cooper, King explained why he asked the question and even described a conversation he had with Gingrich after.

“I had a conversation with the Speaker after and said, ‘Look, you’ve moderated these debates, this is one of those damned if you do, damned if you don’t,” King said. “It is a story that is making the rounds in the campaign. Is it an issue I’m happy came out in the last 48 hours of the South Carolina primary? Of course not.”

Cooper then asked if he had any inclination Gingrich would respond the way he did.

“I knew he was going to challenge the question,” he said. “I’ve been covering politics for 25 years — I understood that if I asked the question he was not going to be happy with it and he was going to turn on me.”

“It was my judgment, my decision, and mine alone. If we’re going to deal with it, let’s deal with it up front, let’s not try to sneak it somewhere into the middle of the debate,” he added.

      If you recall, C.N.N. protected Bill Clinton when sexual misconduct in office ( and In the Office ) surfaced. Most of the minor stream media sided with Wild Bill. Newt Gingrich blasted John King and rightly so. Does C.N.N. even know what the important issues of this election could be ? I loved King’s reaction – he was stunned. C.N.N. should be stunned and snunned.

      You have conflated the issue. It isn’t about his sexual life. It’s about fidelity. Fidelity matters. If you’ll cheat on your wife, you’ll cheat on your business partner, in this case the American people.

      Since its inception, the White House has been occupied by rogues and whores. Newt’s, sexual choices mean little or nothing, as a candidate. His credentials as a leader do, and I see little to convince me, he or any of the candidates have the qualifications. They are all mouth pieces, with little substance and rehearsed sound bites. The laughable subject, is watching those in media question their morality. The very mechanism that has turned morality on its head, having the audacity to question the pawns of the political process. Start paying these unprincipled fools in Washington commissions based on performance, and watch how quickly the stream narrows. The White House is The Whore House, and those who aspire to claim it are the American peoples pimps.

      Excuse? What is it with the question? The question should be about character and one’s decisions.
      The factor is Newt Gingrich and his decisions over a period of years. If the question had not been asked by anyone (CNN FOX ABC etc. it would have been “the elephant in the room” and all the talk today.) King is correct. Damned if you do or damned if you don’t. However, let’s face it. We have a long list of people ie John Edwards Bill Clinton Rudolph Giuliani (who probably would have been the best of the best if not for his baggage and bag) John McCain John Kerry Herman Cain and isn’t So. Carolina home of the Gov who left for So. America to be with his “soul mate”? The list is longer but isn’t this just a reflection of society today? Our governing people are “rock stars” and women have no problem with someone else’s husband either so….this on Newt is a double whammy– add to this his stance on health care and his think tank cronyism. Who was it said for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction? How about Karma? Or chickens coming home to roost? How about Sara Palin and Rick Perry conservative endorsements? Rather confusing, what say Watson? Reflective to say the least.

      The key character issue for Newt is his incredible hypocrisy. Newt led the charge against Clinton and his involvement with a staff member, while at the same time he was having an affair with one of his staff. Newt similar to Clinton is of the evolution of the species politician. He will say whatever is necessary at the time to deflect the question, avoid facts and provide a straight answer. His attack of the journalist here was nothing more than a calculation based on the response to his interactions with Juan Williams. He left himself wide open to any friend his ex might have who can substantiate her recollection of events. Newt is the person who single handily drove more Republicans from the party than any other individual. He is the genesis of the stonewall, do nothing Congress. He is an individual who would rather play politics with every issue rather than actually do something or govern. As an independent there is no way I would vote for Newt. He has no character, he has no honor. He represents everything that is wrong in Washington.

      It has nothing to with ones sex life, but has everything to do with ones ability to control their sex drive. No different than a drug addict who steals to support his addiction. I am even more blown away by the Evangelicals who support such a man, just as they had supported McCain, who had also left his wife while she was ill. Gingrich has done it twice. Newt has the nerve to complain that this kind of news coverage makes it hard to have a “decent” candidate run for president. Isn’t the whole interview about the “decency” of Newt Gingrich. A man ,who, when his wife is no longer healthy and good for him, to leave her in the dust as if she is broken down car ?? Seriously, those of you who support Newt, especially the Evangelicals, seriously need to take a look in the mirror and ask yourself, what is it about your decision that reflects either a present aspect of your faith and life, or a reservation about the future of your faith and life ? Romney took an entire year off of work to care for his wife and do all the duties she was taking care of when she was diagnosed with MS and ill. Why didn’t Newt just understand that he needed to address this right now, get it out of the way, because we know Obama is going to use this against him. So why not set the record straight ? Newt hinges his campaign on his character but don’t want his character brought into the public. Just like his wife says, He can preach family values in Erie,Pa while cheating on his ill wife. Only words.

      Plenty because it show‘s someone’s character. The one thing that came out on the interview in regards to Newt ethic charges, she met with a drug lord & I do wonder what she & Newt were up to. Pelosi did threaten to expose Newt in regards to these charge but legally she can’t but if he ever was the nominee, leaks would come out & expose Newt for the rat he is. He would never win the election. Any conservative who truly stands by family value, would never vote for this hypocrite.       King asked the question first to take the audience’s temperature to see how low he could go with other questions,I think we should call the so-called msm what it is,the propaganda wing of the democratic party,fox may lean to the right but at least they do allow opposing views to be heard! Any pretense of impartiality by the looney left msnbc,cnn,pbs,abc,nbc,cbs,etc disappeared a long time ago,but some people actually get their opinions from these “news” organizations

Just as his X wife said, they weren’t concerned about money while he was in congress, that money would come after he was out of office. Just like Santorum. Now, President is the big bag o bucks. Both these two are so jealous of both Romney and Obama, because they can’t break into that life of luxury until they have the connections they will have as President. Much like Dick Cheney, these two jag-offs where involved in making money using their connections prior to running for president. Interestingly, both were doing it in the health care sector. Wonder why healthcare is so lucrative and why both these greedy pigs keep promising to save us money here while they both earned everything they have in this sector ?? Newt started pilot programs for medicare long before Romneycare or Obamacare, which is why I personally hate this loud mouth intellectual pig. One of his million ideas about moving into socialized medicine cost my Mom and many others their job as Newts idea failed like every government program.       If it is true that ‘DAMNED IF YOU DO, DAMNED IF YOU DON‘T’, then why not take the high ground? Why not take the “‘DAMNED IF YOU DON‘T’ path if your going to get the same amount of criticism anyway.

      That being said, if your CNN and going to attack Newt with this info, then make the attack mean something by tying it into his character. In other words, ask the question in the since this is just one more example of Newt’s dishonestly and bring in some of his other, absolutely indefensible, provable lies.

      It backfired on King and CNN big time anyway. I thought it was really tacky to start the debate with that question. But Gingrich did an excellent job of turning it around and bashing King, CNN, ABC, the main stream media AND, giving a great answer to the question to settle it once and for all. Gingrich got two more ovations from the audience and scored some good points for his comments.

      King just stood there looking like a scolded child while Gingrich let him have it. It was funny and I even cheered over the main stream media comments

      I’m actually glad it worked out the way it did!

      This is further proof that CNN is no better than the Enquirer magazine – cheap tabloid journalism to give a thrill up a liberal’s leg. That being said, it does remind us of Newt’s multiple infidelities, and gives us insight into his core values and character (not that character matters anymore). It further says something about Sarah Palin – who knows these things and yet still endorses him.

      I choose to vote for the successful businessman, governor, and husband – Mitt Romney 2012.

It was over fifteen years ago and I am sorry, she was no saint in the marriage either – not saying she ever cheated – she didn’t. However, she knew who he was at the time, and it was obvious why she had married him – power, pure and simple, and she thought that she can stick it out and it would be like a Clinton marriage – as long as he didnt tell her she didnt care. By the way – wasn’t he cheating with her when he was married to his first wife? Just sayin. Old news.

    Most of you weren’t around when Newt was in Washington, I was paying attention to politics then and Newt had an attitude of throwing anyone, including his own party, under the bus with scorched ground thrown in. He did not care what he did as long as it advanced him. His ego is amazzing, honestly, I thought people would remember how awfull he was then, he walked over everyone and put himself first. The “professor” treated everyone like they were stupid and he was the only smart one. I have no doubt his ex is telling the truth-he got run out for ethics violations that he thought he was too good to be brought down for. Character counts, he may sound clever and smart, and throw in He’s changed and found God, but what he is saying sure reminds me of the “old” Newt. A president needs to think more of the country than himself, a smart alec attitude and a shallow “I’m saved ” that is not showing any humility, which in my book is pretty important, is not what I want in the white house. It will take a lot to put this country back together, one man can’t do it, and Newt is not a team player, at all. Do some research-snappy comebacks is not enough. Again, I will still vote for him if it is the only choice.

      Spot on. I don’t dislike Newt but, he is as you suggest, very arrogant. He is intelligent to be sure but, he is reckless in the way he throws it around. It‘s almost like he’s a spoiled kid who has to be the center of attention at any cost.

      I do think he is capable to take the lead and fix the problems we’re in but, I also think Romney and Santorum could lead as well. I guess only time will tell.

      He did get some things done as a leader. Whenever you put a group together…the leader is the one who is criticized even when there is not a group of a bunch of legislators with competing egos. How many people love their boss? His personal life —however flawed will have no effect on how he runs the country or what he can get done. Being well liked within a group or being a team player when you are leader is not as important as ideas to get this country fixed and a fighting spirit to go up against Obama. And you are not the ONLY one around in those years so maybe you are feeling a bit arrogant yourself!

    The sequence of having this be the first question was absolutely wrong. What is most important for OUR country is not this or tax returns. We need to save the country and for the media to choose what is most important by the placement of these questions is appalling to me. As a nation we are getting used to the media doing this to us~nudging us and placing the priorities where they want to and not prioritizing appropriately. He can defend his actions but as a country if this is what is most important to us then it is no wonder that we are in trouble. The standing ovation was truly what was needed to put this moderator in his place.

    Newt’s looking better every day. He’s a brawler, and an anti-PC soldier. Brash and bold.
    We’ve been electing men who “look presidential” or “seem like nice guys” or maybe you’d like to have a beer with or be neighbors with.
    The time for judging whom we’ll vote for by their looks, is past. No more Mr. nice guys or pretty-boys. We ARE going down the crapper. We need a “grandiose” thinker. That is not to say ALL ideas will, or should be enacted. Ideas are only the basis for plotting a way out of this mess.
    It will be the Congress that carries it out. Hopefully, we’ll get more rock-ribbed Conservatives in, and drive the RINOs out, or at lest diminish their power.

      MATEYTWO- Pay per view? 29.99? that would be a discount probably when compared to the amounts spent already by taxpayers on our ridiculously long election process, I say put all candidates voting records,tax returns and criminal records if applicable, on public display then have 6 months of debates and stop wasting so much time and money! obama is going to spend over 1 bil. on his re-election bid and that’s not counting the under the table,back room deals

      I can see the CNN debates between Obama and Gingrich. They ask Gingrich about his working for Freddie,his divorces,and other issues and then ask Obama what’s his favorite flavor of ice cream ,whose his favorite bands,and what does he like to do on saturdays.

    King asked that question first to try to throw Newt off balance for the rest of the debate, not because it was news. It was just more of the liberal medias attempt to smear Newt.

    It didn’t work because the best of the American public are fed up with the bias of the MSM.

    The question was asked and answered. Very well done Newt.

And the National Enquirer and People magazines are credible sources, Not to mention“might as wall get to it”, Therefore, the ,ajor issues should be responding to alergations from an ex-wife and of course the burning issues of past taxes.
