CNN‘s Zakaria on How Conservatism ’Lost Touch’: GOPers ‘Resemble the Old Marxists Who Refused to Look at Actual Experience’

In his June 16 Time Magazine column “How Today’s Conservatism Lost Touch with Reality,” CNN’s Fareed Zakaria writes:
“Conservatism is true.” That’s what George Will told me when I interviewed him as an eager student many years ago. His formulation might have been a touch arrogant, but Will’s basic point was intelligent. Conservatism, he explained, was rooted in reality. Unlike the abstract theories of Marxism and socialism, it started not from an imagined society but from the world as it actually exists. From Aristotle to Edmund Burke, the greatest conservative thinkers have said that to change societies, one must understand them, accept them as they are and help them evolve.
Watching this election campaign, one wonders what has happened to that tradition. Conservatives now espouse ideas drawn from abstract principles with little regard to the realities of America’s present or past. This is a tragedy, because conservatism has an important role to play in modernizing the U.S.
Consider the debates over the economy. The Republican prescription is to cut taxes and slash government spending — then things will bounce back. Now, I would like to see lower rates in the context of tax simplification and reform, but what is the evidence that tax cuts are the best path to revive the U.S. economy? Taxes — federal and state combined — as a percentage of GDP are at their lowest level since 1950. The U.S. is among the lowest taxed of the big industrial economies. So the case that America is grinding to a halt because of high taxation is not based on facts but is simply a theoretical assertion. The rich countries that are in the best shape right now, with strong growth and low unemployment, are ones like Germany and Denmark, neither one characterized by low taxes.
Many Republican businessmen have told me that the Obama Administration is the most hostile to business in 50 years. Really? More than that of Richard Nixon, who presided over tax rates that reached 70%, regulations that spanned whole industries, and who actually instituted price and wage controls?
Read the rest of his column here.

But any time the government treats one person differently than another because of the group to which that person belongs – whether it’s a group of rich, special-interest tax dodgers or a group of impoverished, minority job-seekers – individual equality is lessened and freedom is diminished. Any time the government gives away goods and services – even if it gives them away to all people equally – individual dependence is increased and freedom is diminished. Any time the government makes rules about people’s behavior when that behavior does not occasion real and provable harm to others – telling you to buckle your seat belt or forbidding you to publish pornography on the Internet – respect for the individual is reduced and freedom is diminished.”

Posted on June 19, 2011 at 4:14pmback in the early 1960s, historian Carroll Quigley did extensive research for his encyclopedic Tragedy and Hope: A History of the World in Our Time. Tragedy and Hope recounted, in over 1,300 tightly-written pages of small print, the gradual rise to power of a small cadre of extremely wealthy and powerful individuals. Many were products of wealthy bloodlines. Some were bankers; others began in other industries but got into banking because that was where the real power was. They operated mostly behind the scenes, not as national political elites but as an international elite – or superelite. For them, natural borders and loyalties were increasingly meaningless. Much has been written about the Rothschilds who discovered in the late 1700s that it was possible for bankers to get rich by loaning money to governments, extending the loans encouraging government to become dependent on them, attaching provisions to the extensions calling for specific policies, and then tallying up the interest. Other such bloodlines would soon follow (the Rockefellers and Morgans here in the US).

“Conservatism used to be a hard-headed set of ideas rooted in reality.”
The transition of which he speaks is one from the Progressive leaning (go figure), big government Conservatism of the current GOP to the free market Conservatism, quite ANTI-Progressive (read: anti-Marxist) Conservatism of America’s Founders.
A common mistake made by the Left is to equate principles with blind ideology, rather than seeing them as derived from logic and observation. Interestingly, their own criticism is proof that they themselves have a set of principles they use to examine the ideas of the Right – so their argument is internally inconsistent.
At any rate, the Constitution as our Founders wrote it IS a hard-headed set of ideas rooted in reality, and in an earlier post I responded to Zakaria’s claim that the Right is not interested in best practices by pointing to Federalist Papers #10, which, as I said, is all about best practices.
Zakaria makes a big deal out of the difference between an “imagined society” verses “the world as it actually exists”, but, again, one would have to have an idea of how society is supposed to work in order to know what to do with the world as it actually exists, and so here his argument commits suicide, as well – he has an imagined society of his own.
(For the future, this argument is just a clever way of saying “derive no principles from observation” and “ignore history”.)

“The Republican prescription is ‘Cut taxes, slash government spending, then things will always bounce back’. I would like to see lower tax rates in the context of simplification and reform, but what is the actual evidence that massive tax cuts are the single best path to revive the US economy.”
First and foremost, Zakaria misunderstands a key aspect of government as it relates to the economy, which is that the government is the RESULT of an already existing economy. So the economy always comes prior to government; Indeed the government would not exist were it not for the funding from taxes.
Another key aspect of government Zakaria misunderstands is that government has no interest beyond the protection of each individuals’ inalienable rights; And America’s Founders understood that an interstate Constitutional representative Republic with a limited Federal government was the best way to preserve a government derived from the consent of the governed, because, as they noted in the Federalist Papers:

“The founders of our republics have so much merit for the wisdom which they have displayed, that no task can be less pleasing than that of pointing out the errors into which they have fallen.
“A respect for truth, however, obliges us to remark, that they seem never for a moment to have turned their eyes from the danger to liberty from the overgrown and all-grasping prerogative of an hereditary magistrate, supported and fortified by an hereditary branch of the legislative authority.
“They seem never to have recollected the danger from legislative usurpations, which, by assembling all power in the same hands, must lead to the same tyranny as is threatened by executive usurpations.”

As for his challenge with regard to tax cuts, it first may be worth noting, as an aside, that he may be deliberately confusing the issues of shrinking the deficit and reviving the economy; I can’t say for sure that he is, but at the very least, this gives me an opportunity to clear any confusion that may exist.
Suffice it to say that reducing tax cuts without cutting government spending will not shrink the deficit.
It is definitely worth noting that the economy is not an entity in its own rite, such that it can be managed without violating individual inalienable rights – another mistake commonly made by the Left – but rather is a name given to nationally aggregated transaction data; The significance being that it is the individual valuations of goods and services which make the economy what it is.
This being the case, it cannot be overstated to someone like Zakaria, who holds government to be an economic player, that the mark of a healthy and growing economy is not full employment, per se, but rather how much freedom each citizen has in trading his goods and services.
Now, cutting taxes ALWAYS grows the economy in any given economy, relative to an otherwise identical economy with higher taxes – the proof being that lower taxes means greater wealth for the individual both for personal consumption and for trade; which should really go without saying.

Of course, attempting to regulate the economy (Corporatism, subsidies, “anti”-trust legislation, environmentalism, and forced Unionization, for example) will have a deleterious effect on the economy no matter how low or high taxes are.
The proof of the greater benefits (by far) of laissez-faire over central planning has been provided by John Stossel in his examination of the Tragedy of the Commons.

I suggest one more stimulus program, and I dare say it would be the most useful program our government ever enacted. We spend 20 Billion dollars to pay for moving expenses for as many liberal/progressive/marxist/democrats as possible and move them to the most Marxist-like country on earth, but on one condition… they must give up their USA citizenship as soon as they are out of country. I would be willing to go into debt for this program. The payback would be huge and the rewards almost instantaneous.

Posted on June 19, 2011 at 11:06pmOh Really.
Let’s see Marxism is just socialism with the state owning the businesses. Socialist/progressives/liberals all follow the same economic policies since they are all the same with different labels. So how are conservatives like Marxists?
“Refuse to look at actual experience”
The liberal/progressive/socialist policies of the of the 1910s and 1930s where the government taxed and tried to spend its way out of economic depression didn’t work. It was the following republican administrations that cut taxes and spending that allowed the economy to recover.
Seems it’s the liberals/progressives/socialists who refuse to look at actual experience to see what didn’t fix the economy in the past.
It was FDR’s economic head that after seven years of taxing and spending like mad on projects like the WPA that said he was baffled why the policies were not working.
This is just as idiotic, untrue and offensive as the palestinians comparing Israel to the nazis.

History has proven that under liberal progressive (government rule) the people are enslaved, abused, murdered, and starved to death. Under conservative (constitutional rule where the people have the power) The people are free and thrive. Either get in touch or STFU.

Posted on June 20, 2011 at 10:04amUS personal income tax may be lower. US coorporate taxes are one of the highest. The fact that he fails to mention this when referring to business is witness to either his bias or incompetence. You decide which. And, on top of those taxes, we have far more regulations…. expensive regulations. Again, the fact that Zakaria fails to mention this fact, that practically any businessman with any international experience would have told him….
Price of a modern IC fab in the US: $4 Billion…. same fab pretty much anywhere else: $3 Billion. And only $100 Million of that increased cost is from higher wages, the rest is higher taxes and far higher regulation costs. Intel would be crazy to build any new fabs here and it’s a similar situation for other companies that have a choice of whether or not to expand here or elsewhere.
And they wonder why we’ve quit watching CNN, MSNBC, etc. Who is more out of touch with reality: the right who are calling for deregulation and lower corporate taxes or Obama who refuses to let us drill for oil when gas is $4/gallon?

Posted on June 20, 2011 at 10:12ambut what is the evidence that tax cuts are the best path to revive the U.S. economy?
—————–
Every time we have cut taxes revenue has gone up, not most of the times, not some of the times, not a few times, but every time. We had proof in the 20′s before idiots took over raised taxes, and caused the great depression. We had proof in the 60′s when we cut taxes and revenue went up. We had proof under Reagan, when we cut taxes revenue went up. There have been several studies that all came to the same conclusion, anytime you put a tax rate at a level above 20-30%, the rate of cheating increases at a rate greater than the extra income generated by the higher rate, to generate extra revenue, you have to increase enforcement to a level that in the end you spend so much in enforcement costs that over all revenue goes down.

Posted on June 20, 2011 at 10:55amer, nice SELECTIVE statistics.
We may be the “GROSS” lowest taxed, but that is because 45% of us don’t pay any income taxes!
If you look at our capital gains taxes, taxes on foreign earnings, etc., we are among the HIGHEST.
The article quotes our EFFECTIVE rate – a %age of GDP, which is a function of COLLECTED taxes – that has nothing to do with RATES – the socialist democrat people only want the conservatives to pay taxes. They want their socialist democrat voting base to get a free ride. NON-taxation WITH representation is the SAME as taxation without representation.

Posted on June 20, 2011 at 10:58amOh, and the Regan deficit CRAP – Regan INCREASED revenues – it was the DEMOCRAT congress that spent at THREE TIMES the rate of his cuts that caused the DEFICIT!! They committed to cutting dollar-for-dollar the spending as he cut taxes. THEY LIED. THEY SPENT THREE TIMES AS MUCH AS HE CUT.
THE SOCIALIST DEMOCRAT people caused that deficit. Then they blame Regan? That is BULL-CRAP! They know it, and we know it.

Posted on June 20, 2011 at 12:42pmFareed is purposely distorting the facts. He even has the wrong tax charts. When it comes to job creation, the conservatives are calling for corporate tax reduction and reform. Instead, he puts up a total individual tax rate chart. The truth is China’s corporate tax rate is 10% below ours, Canada is 15% below ours, and Germany is 5% below ours. (his examples, not mine).
However, I didn’t hear him talk about human conditions in China, communism, the state of the Euro, or the fact that Canada has taken a conservative turn in their government and that it directly correlates to their impressive growth…but I digress.
It is a common tactic of the left today to tie conservatism to Bush and his policies. Bush did what he had to do, and he is a good man. Unfortunately, tax breaks don’t do much if your spending ends up overwhelming it. That was his problem. 9/11, Medicare Part D, No child left behind didn’t help the cause.
Let’s not forget that the economy started really tanking under a Democrat spendaholic Congress. And lastly, can anyone just slightly bring up the Dodd/Frank mess as a huge issue in the fall of the housing market??? It’s like pulling teeth to get the media to cover how regulation and their legislation to “get everyone a home” spurred this irresponsible activity lending companies took part in.
