Coach Takes Obama Phone Call During Press Conference

Last night, the University of Connecticut women’s basketball team set the record for the longest win streak in basketball history at 89 consecutive games. They broke the record set by the UCLA men’s team from the 70s.

As is normal, the president called head coach Geno Auriemma to congratulate. What was abnormal, is that the president called during Auriemma’s post-game press conference, and Auriemma answered — in front of everyone. The conversation played out in front of reporters and TV cameras:

President Obama was not the only politician paying attention to the game. The Associated Press caught Connecticut Attorney General, and Senator-elect, Dick Blumenthal in attendance (above the player’s left hand):

UPDATE:

The website Jezebewl has a better picture of Blumenthal’s cameo:

They are both idiots. Who cares? Except that THIS is what is important to Obama, not the US economy or world situation or wars or illegal immigrants or drug cartels or North Korea or…I could go on forever, but wait, there must be a basketball game on TV I should be watching instead.

To have his cellphone turned on during a press conference, and then to actually answer it, he must have known the call was coming.

I know this is incredibly un-PC, but here goes. While this is an incredible feat, it should be pointed out that there is a major despair in parity in women‘s college basketball when compared to men’s. The sports media should point out that it is a women’s record, but they are trying to blur the lines as if there were no difference at all. We might as well throw MLB and NFL records together.

No that’s not un-PC, it’s simply a fact. The sports media portrayal is that they broke the record, but they didn’t. They didn’t play a single game against a mens college basketball team and hence broke no record. You can‘t break a record for a sport you don’t compete in.

This is the equivalent of a runningback racking up 30,000 yards in a semi pro football league and then the media portraying it as if he’d broken the NFL record for rushing yards. It’s a womens college basketball record no more and no less. And it’s one they already owned, all they did was add another game to the streak.

It’s a great accomplishment within the world of womens college basketball, but trying to portray it as something more is simply dishonest and quite frankly sad.

What happened here was, he knew the presser was going to happen. He asked the teleprompter to write up something to say on the phone, got the “No Such Angecy” to tap the guy’s cell to get his number, then as soon as he saw the coach’s mug on ESPN, he called.

Its nice that he called but could he not do that in private. In doing it the way he did it, he draws some of the spotlight to himself as if to say he was somehow instrumental in their winning streak. I guess he needs some attention this way since he has been on a losing streak himself. He should not do this howver at the “KIDS” expense. They don’t mind though!!!

Does everything have to be about politics today? I can’t stand Obama and happen to believe he is a terrible president. But this is the president of the United States simply reaching out and congratulating this man and his basketball team. I find nothing wrong with this. Obama and his administration give us many reasons to dislike and criticize them for but this shouldn’t be one of those things. It was a nice gesture.
