Coincidence? Soros Apparently Sells Off All Shares of TSA Scanner Company

This week, Mark Hemingway of the Washington Examnier reported that George Soros owns over 11,000 shares of OSI Systems, the parent company of Rapiscan, which manufactures the controversial TSA scanners. But a search today reveals that Soros has divested himself of all those shares.
First, Hemingway’s report from Tuesday:
As for the company’s other political connections, it also appears that none other than George Soros, the billionaire funder of the country’s liberal political infrastructure, owns 11,300 shares of OSI Systems Inc., the company that owns Rapiscan. Not surprisingly, OSI’s stock has appreciated considerably over the course of the year. Soros certainly is a savvy investor.
Media Matters, the liberal media watchdog funded by Soros, quickly seized on Hemingway’s article and mocked him, saying that 11,3000 shares are only “six one-hundredths of one percent” of the company’s total stock. It included the following screen shot showing the investment:
But a funny thing happened between Tuesday and Wednesday: the site detailing Soros’s OSIS investments now shows that Soros owns zero shares of the company:
So what happened between yesterday and today? Did the website simply update its information? Did it have the information wrong? Did Soros start feeling the heat and sell off his shares? Hemingway, who first reported the stock holdings, weighs in:
It would be nice if he did this as a response to public pressure, but it seems equally likely that as an investor he simply realized the political tide was turning against the company and the stock may drop as a result.
Either way, it’s all very interesting.
UPDATE:
The Blaze spoke with a representative from gurufocus.com, the site referenced by Hemingway and Media Matters. According to the representative, Soros owned the OSIS stock at the end of the second quarter and sold it during the third quarter. That puts the sale sometime between July 1 and September 30. The representative said the site first updated the information yesterday, which explains the change in the amount of stock owned.

Sell high, then have your [so-called] “news” organizations pump a bunch of stories about how bad the scanners are, stock then crashes, then buy low and have your buddies over in the gub’mint just MANDATE their use and voila! the stock rebounds and you’re freaking richer than rich.

Posted on November 17, 2010 at 12:42pmActually it was an intelligent economic decision, and one I would have taken too if I had no morals and bought stocks in companies that made police state equipment. The public mood is clearly and loudly boiling about this and there‘s a fair gambler’s chance that the machines may go bye bye soon (not tomorrow, but soon). The stock is probably at the highest it will be, ever, ergo he’s selling at the high, presumably buying when it was much lower, and making a tidy profit from the transaction.
Seems that he is the ultimate example of the robber baron. Buys nothing companies with “promise” for police state purposes, manipulates public policy to push his stock prices up, sells just as the public sentiment turns against it, and walks away richer. Good work, if you’re amoral or evil.

Here’s some edu-ma-cation on these here matters that I done found….
The FIRST full body scanner purchased by the TSA that was used in the United States was used in Tulsa OK in February of 2009 as part of an “experimental program” (http://www.usatoday.com/travel/flights/2009-02-17-detectors_N.htm)
CNN Money reported in January of 2010-
“The U.S. government is using $25 million in stimulus money to buy and install full body scanners in airports this year, in an effort to ramp up security and create jobs.”
“The Transportation Security Administration is using funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to purchase 150 of the full body scanners, according to TSA spokeswoman Sarah Horowitz.”
“Peter Kant, vice president of global government affairs for Rapiscan…said ‘the U.S. government has given the TSA the green light to spend $173 million on scanners, which includes the initial $25 million contract.’ ”
Can ya remind us which President done signed that darned ARRA? I coulda swored that it was proposed by and voted through by the Dem-o-crats…..

Posted on November 18, 2010 at 1:27pmFatPatriot, I do not despise conservatives or liberals. I despise people who are too lazy or stupid to get the correct facts and who rely on a buffoon like Beck or Olbermann to do it for them. I am not tied to Soros, but I am embarassed as an American by the stupidity on display here. I have no inside information. You can go to edgar.gov and read the publicly available inforamtion on OSIS to learn what I know. That you don’t do it means that you are a fool interested in being led on a string by Beck. You call me a troll, but what I represent is a threat that reality and its factual basis crashes down on the mythology that you prefer to live in and by.
Jabber, you do understand that OSIS was selling a lot of other scanners before they released that full body scanner, and that the Bush administration after 9/11 caused the biggest increase in orders that the company has ever seen, right? So if you are going to make up stories about Soros moving the gov’t to by full body scanners from them, although it is a rounding error of a position in his hedge fun, then, in the interest of intellectual honesty and poltical fairness, you MUST admit that one could construct the same garbage theory about conservative businessmen who are either investing in OSIS or work there as an executive during the Bush years (’01-’08). My point is that this story, which has no empirical basis and logically makes little sense, has currency because the people carrying it do not think for themselves and do not demand factual and logical rigor from the PT Barnums (e.g., Beck) that create these silly shows of drama.

That also makes me curious as to what exactly TSA agents are hiding in your stuff when the bosses are not watching! Please elaborate.
I’d also be curious to know how often the TSA finds dangerous items on a “randomly selected” person during one of these invasive pat-downs. You mention the TSA not being allowed to profile, and while I think this is the most efficeint way to screen, I think what they are doing now is reverse-profiling. You judge that screening gives a modicum of safety… So we trade huge chunk of privacy rights and dignity for.. a MODICUM of safety. When the alternative is the INTELLIGENT PROFILING similar to that of Israel is WAY MORE EFFECTIVE. Just compare the airline issues in Israel vs. US. Then consider that Israel is IN THE SNAKE PIT. Posted on November 17, 2010 at 4:37pmAs an American conservative who moved to Capitalist China away from Communist USA, it seems every day that goes by proves it was the right choice (aside from the massive profits of running a small business in China with cheaper, smarter labor) . Over here, the airport staff and attendants are 10x more courteous and you don’t get “rapescan inc” (rapiscan, lol that name is certainly an intended irony) trying to take pictures of your privates, and the one time I got patted down was by a dang cute girl so the heck if I could get upset (only cuz a bubble gum wrapper had set off the alarm – ridiculous).
Don’t believe me that US is more communist?
(Glenn Beck needs to cite these stats sometime so someone forward it and verify.)
First, if we assume government spending is the only verifiable measure of government planning, then the USA is 250% MORE communist than China. The US’ GDP was 50% government spending, whereas China was 20%. So the US has 250% more government planning if spending is used as the measurement.
And for those of you deriding the People’s *REPUBLIC* of China for human rights abuses
(99% of governments are democracies or republics, even Iran and North Korea are republics), just remember, if the US wants to abuse your rights, NO ONE WILL KNOW ABOUT IT (rendition, assasination, etc.).
Just ask Congressman Larry McDonald [the first Glenn Beck], or JFK, RFK, JFK jr., MLK, Malcolm X, Vince Foster, Pat Tillman, Paul Wellstone, Lee Harvey Oswald, or any other significant social figure causing real change — oh wait, you can‘t cuz they’re all dead.
The problem is China sucks at covert assasinations and instead of buying the media thru proxy corporations as the US government does, they have “state media” and openly admit their government form. China is just more frank and honest than the US is. Democracy has a knack of putting the best liar in power.
They don’t bother having rigged elections like the US does. It’s funny how you all will admit Harry Reid rigged his machines (like anyone backed by the Casinos couldn’t do that? lol, that’s the job of a casino, to rig machines) but then go and claim to be some great “democracy” as if the rest of the world are the only people with rigged elections and human rights abuses (and what the hell are human rights anyways, some made up materialist crap to get people to unite under world government on “equality” basis).
So in summation China is state capitalist (as beck sometimes mentions) and the USA is communist.
China will wup America’s ass because they are Capitalists (perhaps National Socialists) who can pretend to be Commis. And National Socialism works better than capitalism, sadly. Communism doesn‘t work because it tries to redistribute and can’t set a proper price on things, China does neither. Nazism is scarily efficient. (Beijing Olympics anyone?)
Who will succeed economically? American-idol-watching, fast food eating, food-stamp using, 15% with degrees, multicultural, multireligion, Americans? Or the hardworking, no safety net, 100% get 4 year degrees, disciplined as hell, ethnically unified Chinese? Didn’t you all see the Beijing Olympics? I’d like to see America try to even have 100 people synchronized rather than thousands.
China has 80% of the world’s construction cranes, despite being 20% of the population.
Report Post »The Chinese ACTUALLY work and make stuff. Whereas half of America just wants “hobby jobs” like to be an actor/director/musician. THOSE ARE HOBBIES, NOT JOBS. Art doesn’t put food on the table, clothes on your back, or a roof over your head. Better yet, the Chinese have wisely decided to not approve of US copyright laws. So they can have their cake and eat it too. America churns out all the art for their consumption, and they don’t have to waste economic resources on art.

Posted on November 17, 2010 at 5:22pmYou guys are so ignorant. First, OSIS has nearly quadrupled in the last two years and trades at a relatively rich multiple. Second, there have been some concerns over their forward orders from the US government, so several investors in the stock have reduced holdings. Third, the ownership reports come from 11-F reports filed with the SEC over Edgar, and these come out on a quarterly basis. They would not be updated on a weekly basis; therefore, the sales likely occurred at a different time than the anti-Soros crowd is, without any factual evidence, assuming. Fourth, the OSIS shares are a tiny percentage of Soros‘ total fund’s asset value (less than .04%). Fifth, Soros has a lot of equity analysts working for him and the old man does not approve all buys and sells, so the timing has to do with what some 30-something year old financial analyst thinks about the stock, not how the ownership would look to conspiracy-theory accolytes of Beck. Honestly, how can one have an intelligent debate when people’s understanding is so challenged and so far from reality.

Better yet, tour the mass graves of the millions of innocent civilians killed during the Cultural Revolution. Too risky even for you? Perhaps you can set up an interview with Liu Xiaobo? “…Mao‘s Great Famine is a masterpiece of historical investigation into one of the world’s greatest crimes. …Limiting himself to describing and analysing the famine, [the author] devotes only a few lines to what may be one of its eeriest aspects: that it provoked so little reaction in the west. It is not that the fact of the famine was unknown. Reports surfaced repeatedly, only to be discounted by a host of prominent visitors. …
The famine Mao made was different, … because it was created by a regime that claimed to be creating a society without scarcity. … In the minds of its western admirers, Mao’s China was a fantasy land, not a real country. …China has never aroused more enthusiasm in the west than during the Cultural Revolution… only a few years after the Great Leap Forward, which destroyed millions more lives.”

Posted on November 17, 2010 at 4:53pm@ Journalist… Epic work! But that makes me scratch my head… Why would BP insiders (I think on 60 minutes, not sure) tell that inspection reports of the platform were fudged or ignored, and that this accident was INEVIDABLE because safety was ignored? hrmmm…
OH WAIT! MAYBE they were paid like say, twice the salary they would have made in their lives in one lump sum by…I dunno…“some heavily invested” guy, to LIE about those safety inspection reports, and CBS, ever the complient servent to that “heavily invested spooky dood” ran the story as fact!
I‘m just talkin’ out loud here, folks, ha haha…. that would NEVER happen…
Get stocked up, people. if you NEVER believed any word that ever came out of Beck’s mouth, believe that. Not only food, but ammo. Gonna be a bumpy ride…
Get duct tape too…you never know…
Semper Fi and thanks again for that story, Journalist…you are epic and a great American!

Posted on November 17, 2010 at 5:29pmBetterdays, you have the wrong guy. The real money was made in Monsanto when that company hired a bunch of former Bush Sr. folks to lobby on behalf of it to force farmers to use its product under threat of lawsuits. It also relied upon its former corporate lawyer, a certain conservative justice Clarence Thomas to speak up on behalf of changing IP laws to allow Monsanto to collect annuities of cash on naturally-occuring genetic code. Now, Justice Thomas typically goes not weeks or months, but years, without every asking a single question during SCOTUS hearings, but he apparently spoke for several minutes on behalf of the case that made Monsanto shareholders very rich. Your relentless attacks on the Dems lead you to characterize even companies that are so obviously Republican that there is no doubt of their allegience as suckers for liberal leaders and causes. This conclusively proves that you do not know what you are talking about, and that you blame liberals irrationally for everything, from a weak economy to rain on your wedding day. Only fools would parade such ignorance proudly in public.

Posted on November 17, 2010 at 5:32pmSoros has invested in the xray screening systems. He need the government to buy them. He sets up a willing terrorist with a faulty underwear bomb. The man get’s arrested and read his rights before our military can question him. Janet N. comes on the news and says something like the system worked the way it was supposed to. We now need to have xray equipment to prevent this from happening again or we will have to fill you up (sexually assault) before getting on the plane. Now TSA can buy all the equipment they need and Soros gets rich.
But how can we get the sheep to use this equipment. Lets have a news story stating that Muslim woman won’t have to go through the security system for religious reasons. Now the debate isn’t our rights are being taken away and we will not except this new system to… if I have to be screened everyone has to be screened.
This is just a thought.

Confucius say, “Man who go to bed with itchy butt, wake up with smelly finger.”
Translation: You parade your own ignorance by barking up the wrong tree. Progressives (both Liberal and Republican) sold this country down the river a long time ago. It matters not who is in power politically; the almighty dollar rules. Monsanto is dirty as sin no matter what side of the aisle they’re currently manipulating. And yes, Soros is making all kinds of cheddar stacks off of them and all of us while you’re still concerned with whose end-zone dance is the silliest.
It’s no longer an “us vs. them” ideological battle…it’s us vs. the progressive elites, and the progressive elites are closing and locking the door behind them, kicking the ladder over, and greasing every rung. You’re either part of the solution, or part of the useful idiots helping them grab more power. I hope you enjoy the 50 cent patch on your Members Only jacket they’ve bestowed upon you while you help carry their water, because that‘s all you’re going to get out of the deal.
Donald Rumsfeld helped get cancer causing aspartame past the FDA, but guess whose in power still allowing it to run its course. Catch my drift?
Whose currently in power giving hundreds of millions of tax dollars to Monsanto for genetically modified algae research geared towards risk-free energy investment on YOUR dime? Whose currently in power, not stopping Monsanto from suing farmers whose plants naturally cross-pollinate with Monsanto patented GM crops, but instead giving them a greater seat at the table by selling our sovereignty away to UN Codex schemes and grand biofuel plans?
Who made billions off of oil, and the Oil-for-Food Scandal and is now allowed to hang tight in China while promoting “environmental justice” and shaking a finger at the rest of us, while pushing carbon credit schemes and investing in Chinese automobiles with Soros?
Which former Vice President whose family made bundles from Occidental Petroleum is on a world tour in his private jet promoting global warming and carbon credit schemes, demanding the rest of us to live with less?
Which administration demonized Wall Street while employing half of their highest executives on their “economic recovery team” and monetary policy councils?
Your talking points and finger are much like your lower intestine…stinky. Enjoy your low hanging fruit.

Posted on November 17, 2010 at 8:52pm@ JOURNALIST now i gave you major kudos on the BP post you gave, but stand down against ABC. he is telling the truth here. The GOP that was in control, at least before all the republican primaries effed the GOP was just as bad, and in the same boat, as the Soros Libs and that is a “fact” that came be constude from the way they were acting since just before the ‘06 elections. ABC speaks truth, although I would LOVE if he gave blame to the left as well. I have a post on here on the ‘guess who shoed up” commie gathering vid on here a few hours ago that agreed with ABC then as well. ABC, can I get you to admit that BOTH sides are pooping in their pants and wrong about power-hunger? Or am I defending your words at my own peril?
Semper Fi, and God please show us the truth!

Posted on November 18, 2010 at 9:05amSoros is not stupid, misguided maybe, but not stupid. With all of the outrage over these scanners, the stock price will fall because the purchase contracts may be voided as TSA does not need these any more since all of the insiders have made their millions. Just a good investment strategy. Buy just before the Gov starts buying and sell before the Gov has to abandon the things due to public outcry. Buy low sell high, make Billions so that you can fund communists organizations.

Posted on November 18, 2010 at 1:21pmJournalist, first Confucius never said that. Second, it is not us vs. progressive elites, but the common man versus the corrupt elite, and there are corrupt elites that are progress and that are conservative (e.g., Rumsfeld, Cheney, etc.). Third, my point about Monsanto highlights that conservatives are neck-deep into Monsanto, which has undertaken questionable practices and with impunity because of powerful GOP connections. Finally, that you insist on making it a left (dirty) vs. right (clean) polemic, means that you do not see reality clearly. That I highlighted a conservative example, while highlighting that elites of the left and the right are equally corrupt, puts me in a different and more accurate category than you. Heck, you cannot even get your Confucius quotes right…

Posted on November 18, 2010 at 4:08pmIt’s interesting that the company making these scanners is OSI. As in Open Society Institute. I probably am reading to much into this. Wouldn‘t an open society as Soros wants include intrusive sceenings for what’s under your clothes. Maybe this will bring to light the injustice of people being born different from each other with different skin color & body parts. I think we need a Bodily Injustice Society to make sure there aren‘t people out there who have been blessed bodily more than other’s. That mean God, I mean magic man in the sky the sheeple pray too, making us all our own individuals instead of us all being the same. Shame on him giving us uniqueness.
