Colin Powell Decries ‘Nonsense’ Attacks on Obama

(AP) — Retired Gen. Colin Powell, a moderate Republican who endorsed Barack Obama in 2008, says the president’s critics should be going after him on policy, not “nonsense.”

“Fringe” elements on the right are taking a low road when they label Obama a foreign-born Muslim and peddle other theories about non-American influences on the president’s character, Powell said Sunday. Obama was born in the U.S. and is Christian.

The former secretary of state said he still sees Obama as a transformational figure, if one who has lost some of his ability to connect with people.

Powell welcomed Obama’s policies in health care and education while saying the president may have taken on too many problems at once and not done enough to control the deficit.

“There are so many rocks in our knapsack now that we’re having trouble carrying it,” he said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

Powell said the tea party may not become an enduring force unless it moves beyond slogans and promotes an agenda that people “can see, touch and actually believe in.” It’s not enough, he said, to call for goals that most Americans support, such as controlled federal spending and adherence to the Constitution.

And in challenging Obama, Powell said, “Let’s not go down low. … Let’s attack him on policy, not nonsense.”

Powell says he’s not giving up on the GOP, despite its rightward drift, and says it might actually help Obama if Republicans win the House in November and gain responsibility for driving policy, not just opposing Democrats at every turn.

As Mr. Powell knows, you do not let your opponents decide how, when or where you attack them. If the fight is worth fighting, then you use everything at your disposal. The left understands this, that is why they constantly try to prevent their opponents from speaking or staying on topic.

I agree that we do not have to attack Obama by personal attacks. There are enough policy differences to attack Obama. Number one is the deficit. Unless they allow the market place to find its’ bottom as well as the unemployment percent, we will never change course and get out of our deficit problems. Government programs are just postponing reaching this bottom.

Yes there are lunatics that would like to bring this down to the gutter and I will denounce any and all of them one by one. As far as President being A Christian I will have to take him at his word and deeds of not just saying he is A Christian but acting like A Christian. Yes he has caused me concern along with doubt of his his Faith as I watched him just last night delete words from our beloved Constitution That Our Rights are Granted to us by Our Creator. When you would see anyone delete these words and stammer past them it should give causes for concern at least ask the question as to why he would do that as the media along with you Sir had made him out to be one of the greatest minds ever to walk this earth. Frankly I find the whole “citizenship” and “Muslim” thing more of a distraction then anything else and when I start to read a comment about them I just ship to the next post while thinking to myself rightly or wrongly that it is a post from another person on the borderline of being a nut job. There are plenty of other things to get upset about when looking at Mr Obama. He has in the past made a statement about him being in favor of redistribution of wealth, him surrounding himself with self described communists, marxists, and academics who have plenty of theories but are seriously short of experience. Also he seems to have become disconnected from the public and many of his personal actions are viewed by many as elitist. In my opinion Mr Obama has demonstrated very few leadership qualities and I think that so far he has been a very poor President. Let’s criticize him for that.

Frankly, I agree. But wait a minute, General Powell, you are cherry picking comments made not by the majority of us who are entirely against Mr. Obama’s policies. I don’t pretend to be privy to his inner thoughts. Judging only the actions of this president, I am entirely comfortable saying he has a deep disdain, if not outright hatred for the United States of America. His kind of academic elitist view of America is reprehensible. If this president doesn‘t like America and wants to urinate all over America’s Constitution, he has the choice to take his loved ones and leave here. But to want to take us down, to want to destroy our prosperity, to want us to live like people in less developed countries for some ideology which has no place in this great America, is nothing less than sedition and treason. If he succeeds in any of it, he should be prosecuted under the “high crimes” statutes. This man has demonstrated that he will, if not restrained, devalue every American life to it’s lowest possible denominator. A curse on his house!

If Powell really believed in the Constitution, he would support LTC Lakin, not on the birth certificate but on his “natural born” status. I stop short of agreeing with Powell. The book is not out yet so of course I haven’t read it, but the article never said Obama wasn’t born in the US or that he was Muslim. It said that his grand father and father were anti-colonialists with great reason to hate Great Britian, and that his mother was a socialist. This was his up-bringing. These were the things that shaped him.
I‘ll tell you what DIDN’T shape him. None of his ancestors were ever slaves. He does not share the same history as African American people. He never sat on his grandfather’s knee and heard the real stories of slavery and oppression in America. His ancestors SOLD people into slavery. He had so much trouble figuring out who he was as a young man because he couldn’t relate to Americans. Not because he wasn’t born here, but because of the ideologies of his parents and grandparents. They taught him. They shaped him.

Max Jones, plenty of people have seen documentation, but it is against the law for the agencies that hold these records to give them up to just anyone who asks. This does not matter, because no amount of proof will change your mind. You’ll keep on with this ignorant “up is down” mentality for as long as you feel like it.

I agree, cheap shots are a distraction when there are so many more substantive bases on which to counter Obama and his socialist agenda. We must focus on basic principles and lay the axe at the root of the tree. Pointing out the manifest failures of progressive policy and the basic fallacies underlying it will be far more effective than resorting to personal attacks in the long run.
That being said, I don’t have a problem with honest inquiry into what makes a particular President tick, if it is backed up with verifiable documentation. And speaking of documentation, apparently Arizona has just passed a law requiring all political candidates to furnish proper documentation validating their qualification to hold the office they are seeking. I am looking forward to seeing how that plays out in the 2012 presidential election.

Hey, name change: DesertRose70 and IgnoranceisStrength are his fierce loyal companions attempting to dump liberal garbage all over the place. They go dribbling here and there slobbering over all their greatness. They firmly believe the egg on their faces is a beauty treatment and that Toilette de Michelle is perfume. Obama said so, so it must be fact.

No man can tell you that another man is a Christian, only He and God knows.
its a matter of fact I cant even say my wife is saved only GOD knows. The fact that Obama thinks there is a
collective salvation reveals that He is a liberation theology stud. Which is not Christian but a cult as in Jeremiah Wright, and Wallace yes thats right. You can know what is Christian but we dont have the ability to know for sure who is saved. Mormons beliieve that they will inherit a planet and populate it with many Virgins in His own Heaven. Thats a no go. The Bible says one life then the Judgement. Obama aswell dosent understand the context of the older n newer Testaments either not to mention mocked the very word of GOD when He stated that which law do we believe. Obama has alot of Marxist Ideas that we know for sure, thats not Christian by anymeans.in fact when the Government wants to control you is when biblically we rebel against the King. rcscrolls@aol.com

I cant Believe that Colon Powel is a Christian either, He sounds exactly as the Establishment wich is what the TEA PARTY is opposed too! The TEA PARTY will fundamentally transform America backto its original intent which will be seen each and every voting session from now on. When they screw up we kick them out.
Term limits on Congress, no ear marksrepeat no earmarks, fiscal responsibility, free markets and no more high pay. When our system started out they were low pay great benes pakage now they have the best of both worlds. Oh and if we keep Obamacare they will have as well, then we will see some real change.
flat tax11 to 18 cents and no more IRS we just saved 400 billion right there. We need congress to be Blue collar workers not million and billionaires. Thats how WE THE PEOPLE will run Our Country

Yeah, I can’t believe that Colin Powell would not want to turn back the clock to the founding era. You know, when black people could be legally enslaved, beaten and killed… Oh… maybe that’s why he would prefer there to be progress.

Debra, it’s NOT a either or situation. You can point out that Obama is NOT eligible to be POTUS aqccording to the Constitution and point out his many fascist policies. IF people had gotten behind the “birthers” before he became POTUS and forc3ed hinm to prove he is a natural born citizen, he would never had the chance to implenebt these FAQSCIST programs.

if you want to read what going to bring obama down its this. this was pulled from a russian newspaper. finally some real journalism.

Obama‘s ’Certification of Live Birth‘ form reveals his Birth Registration was FILED in 1961 but was never fully ACCEPTED by the Hawaiian State Registrar’s Office.

Hawaii is covering this up for political reasons to protect Obama. Only they know the ultimate reasons they are all willing to commit Misprision of Felony at this point in time given the mounting evidence that Obama was not physically born in Hawaii. Obama may have amended his record since 1961 to try to reinforce and cover up the original fraudulent filing. But his online COLB clearly shows that when it was FILED it was never finally ACCEPTED. This is a national disgrace that our entire system of laws including the Constitution and all legal records are being subverted and subordinated to cover up for Obama’s continued fraud on the nation as to his true legal identity. What is so important about this one man that Hawaii is willing to see the nation destroyed by his corruption and lies from birth by his family and continued on all his life by Obama. The man is a grifter and conman. See this catalog of evidence that shows by the preponderance of the evidence that Hawaii and the nation are the victims of birth registration fraud by Obama’s family in 1961:The investigator then personally went to the hospital in Mombassa, Kenya. He spoke with the Provincial Civil Registrar and he learned that there were records of Ann Dunham giving birth to “Barack Hussein Obama, III” in Mombassa, Kenya on August 4, 1961. The investigator then “spoke directly with an Official, the Principal Registrar, who openly confirmed the birthing records of Senator Barack H. Obama, Jr. and his mother were present, however, the file on Barack H. Obama, Jr. was classified and profiled. The Official explained Barack Hussein Obama, Jr. [sic] birth in Kenya is top secret. [H]e was further instructed to go to the Attorney General’s Office and to the Minister in Charge of Immigration if [he] wanted further information.”That is a real mind bender. Let’s see; AKA Obama wasn’t born in Kenya but his birth place is declared to be “top secret” by Kenyan officials. There are no records of AKA Obama being born in Kenya and those nonexistent records are being withheld and are “top secret”. That sounds so much like what the official position of AKA Obama could be; “I have nothing to hide but I’m hiding it.”
you can read the whole story at; http://obamareleaseyourrecords.blogspot.com/2010/09/pravda-does-it-again-no-evidence-of.html

See Bookhound63 for my thoughts, as well, on this latest attempt to twist relevant remarks to make political hay. Let me assure you all I thought I was fairly normal when I really wanted Colin Powell to run for President! I wasn‘t radical then even though he didn’t agree with me. Does that make me radical now that he does? I‘ll stick to debating the president’s policies Ü

Really? You birther crazies are so desperate that you will quote Pravda Online? Please note that Pravda.ru is not actually the site of the Pravda newspaper, and is not affiliated with the publication in any way. Also note that the piece in question appears in the Opinion section, not the News section. None of the information is verified.

So please. Do not be so stupid. It’s annoying for reasonable people to have to explain basic concepts of journalism to you.
