‘Collapse’ Preparations Push Skyrocketing Survival Gear Sales

As the U.S. economy tanks and the Mid-East appears poised for war, a chain of survival gear stores in Missouri has reported a jump in sales due to people getting ready for the possible ‘collapse’ of society.
Steve Dorsey, a manager at one of the Uncle Sam’s Safari Outfitters stores in Webster Groves told KMOX-Radio that: “We had to order fifty cases of the meals ready to eat to keep up with the demand in the past three months. That’s not normal. Usually we sell 20 to 30 cases in a whole year.”
When local stores start running out of MREs– specially packaged meals ready-to-eat, generally for the military– that seems to be a sign of strong public anxiety.
Steve Dorsey also told reporters that sales has been picking up since the Arab Spring revolts and with the continued specter of a global economic collapse hanging over America.
‘Collapse’ preparations are apparently not just for the outdoorsman either. Dorsey claimed that wealthy patrons from cities have been buying up the gear as well, telling KMOX that:
“I’ve had people in here that are very wealthy and they’ve spent thousands of dollars just on backpacks that they fill with survival gear, one for each person of their family and something where they can just grab a bag and get out of Dodge.”
The survivalists‘ plans for a collapse aren’t limited to any one route, according to Dorsey. Some are stocking up on freeze-dried meals for home, others are stashing food at remote locations outside of cities they would flee to in the event of major incident. In other cases, families are setting up communal safe havens where 20 or 30 people will gather in the event of a collapse.
Dorsey gave his analysis of the situation as “people are scared. They don’t know where this country is going. They think we’re on a downward spiral with just dramatic, crazy spending. People just don’t know what’s going to happen.”
That much seems increasingly obvious, whether one is out storing up on MREs or not.

Posted on November 23, 2011 at 5:43pmWe have a tri-county militia in my area that consists of about 1500 active memnbers and literally thousands of uncommitted supporters. Mostly formed on the basis of self-defense about 15 years ago, it has since re-emerged with a lot of new faces. It is also involved with educating people to be prepared for emergencies, such as hurricanes and rioting. As many say: “Hope for the best, but prepare fr the worst.”
While MRE’s are definitely an excellent long-term survival item, people should know also that for immediate consumption ordinary grocery store canned goods are a tastier, less expensive alternative to nourishment in the short term. (Two years or less) While manufacturers advise rotating canned goods every tear and a half, they can be untainted and perfectly safe to eat up to three years old. I’m speaking from personal experience and would advise people to determine for themselves what is safest for them. Some say in a controlled temperature environment canned goods have been known to be perfectly o.k. for up to five years, but I can’t verify that with actual experience.
Is all this surge toward survival unmerited? Hardly. Never in the history of this country has so many problems and potential problems converged as they have right now.
As many, many pundits are alleging, we are headed for economic times the likes of which have never been experienced before, and never has the country contained so many people who hate it.
Lock and load.

Also make sure you have a data stick with copies of all your info on it (birth cert, license, etc.)
Here is an awesome site I found a while back. The bloggers name is Ferfal, he’s just a regular guy and lived through the collapse in Argentina. He gives you real advice on how to prepare and then deal with the coming crisis. Read through all his older posts too, I was hooked.

Posted on November 24, 2011 at 12:04amEducate yourself on the shelf life of regular items you can buy in the grocery store.
We are working on various beans that are good well into 2013, then we have the next batch ready after that. We put the exp date on top of the cans with a Sharpie, then separate into different totes. We always keep things in totes to help with longevity.
Canned items should be kept in dark areas. Many, many grocery-store items last well over a year, with some easily making it 2 or more years. Rotate by using the oldest first. Pasta and cereals, which we keep in both plastic bags and then inside of a tote, last quite awhile.
I would plan to utilize the grocery-store things first, with mixing in a freeze-dried item in from time to time for variety. While I have MRE’s, they are expensive, and with regular store-bought items, you can go quite a long period with plenty to eat.
Another thing (besides firearms and plenty of ammo), is a generator. You can have them wired to come on automatically. You’ll need to keep gas stabilizer in the tank and start it from time to time, as Ethanol gas will gum up the fuel system. Keep the tank full, with 5 gal cans in reserve. Treat those extra cans, too! Lights in the yard will keep the roaches away at night.

Really, as I said, there are many grocery-store things that last a long time, they are:
canned tomatoes/canned vegs. – canned beans – baked beans – cereals – etc, etc. You can eat these things out of the can, cold, if you have to but, you don’t have to do that.
Buy a small camp stove with two or three 20 lb tanks of LP gas to heat things up with.

Sorry for the distraction. Commodities will be an important thing to consider. People will need things, whether you trade them for something you need, or give them to help someone out.
BTW, Blaaaaak, don’t take my earlier remarks about city curfews due to black/hispanic aggression personally. As with most all whites, we DO judge people by their character. I‘ve never had a white friend who doesn’t have black friends in which their skin color is never even thought of. It’s about who you are and how you act, not what color your skin is. It’s just a fact that [in cities] where there are major populations of blacks and hispanics, there is high crime.
Many blacks are fed up with it. The problem is with haters like Sharpton, Jackson, Farrakan, Wright, Maxine (and the rest of the CBC), who have a score to settle.

Posted on November 23, 2011 at 4:51pmMost people have not thought about this all the way through. Food, ammo, shelter, water, a place to grow a crop of food. This is not even nearly enough. Think about 1 million people walking out of the city, hungry, thirsty, even if every last one of them are good guys. You will be over run simply by the foot traffic of tennis shoes as people walk to your front door to kindly ask for a glass of water for their infant.
Even if you had 50,000 rounds of ammo, and a well that pumps continuously, you could not sate this crowd. You could kill only 1/20,000th of them with the ammo, and you could allow only 1/10,000th of them drink from your well.
You would die from exhaustion just from pulling the trigger.
My math is probably a little off, it’s just a rom calculation, but you get the point. Man cannot live as an island, not today, not with this world population. You must have allies, circles of trust, neighbors you can count on. That sort of thing. Without that, you will die.

Posted on November 23, 2011 at 11:44pmI agree with the circle of trust and allies. But your nearnest to the city will depend on the grim picture you paint. First they’ll be working on the low hanging fruit by going through the apartments, Church pantries and what not to get their fill. Then they’ll be stock pilling these things thus creating a war between themselves for the goods. They will not immediately think of hitting the suburbs for your stuff until their numbers and strength have withered. Your scenario is then a little less realistic. However, it will be your neighbors in that nice little master planned community that will be your immediate concern because they will all run to the stores but it will be too late then they will remember your sly comment in passing at the mail box that you better prepare with some extra stuffs. You will be the bread box for the hood. It will be hard to turn folks away esp when you’ve already rationed your food stuffs for only a year tops. This charity will eat into your plans and thus end your life shorter than expected. While they march onto the next handout….think about it.

Some of us are survivors, and some are not! Most of the idiots will kill themselves trying to get out of the cities. If it actually gets as bad as you depict, and lawlessness rules, then visiting the country-boys will be the last place on the list of city rats.
As well, too many of us remember the blacks rioting in the 60‘s and the LA riots resulting from Rodney King’s well-earned beating. We know that it will be up to us to protect ourselves…. and we will! The police will not be able to prosecute us, as they would be too busy protecting their own families and, anyway, did they protect anyone in Newark, NJ; LA; Detroit, etc?
My guess is [in case of anarchy] that almost immediately there will be strict curfews placed in cities where there are significant black and hispanic populations. However, even normally law-abiding Whites will get testy when hunger and panic strike.
You say “man cannot live as an island”. Maybe…..but there will be many islands working together as we reset our country. People will realize they have to band together to protect each other. Not the city rats, but the hard-working, God fearing country folks.

Posted on November 27, 2011 at 9:42amI see that many of you understood my point. Fighting against your neighbors (even ones that you have never met before) is a losing proposition. Allying with them and working together to rebuild a better world is a winning proposition. Giving away water to wanderers is for losers. Asking wanderers to come till the garden in exchange for water is a winner. Helping a neighbor in trouble builds an ally. Pointing a gun at them builds an enemy. There are myriad things that someone who is prepared can offer in exchange. Things that really do not cost a dime. A well has more water than you can ever drink – better to ask someone to have a drink in exchange for being a well guard at night. A farmer has more land that can produce more bounty than he could ever eat. Better to make a deal with him and offer to have some of your new water-drinking allies come and plant his crops and water them with your water, than to build a bigger fence between he and you. These circles of family, circles of neighbors, circle of communities – these are the power-houses of the brave new world. This is how it worked in Russia throughout the communist occupation, and this is how it will work here. Those who cloister themselves inside might live a year before their food runs out, they may be raped and pillaged without a single neighbor lifting a finger. Go talk to your neighbor – he is your greatest weapon, and you, his.

Posted on November 27, 2011 at 9:52amOne final reminder – a man’s wealth is not measured by what is in his pocket. Rather, it is measured by what he accomplishes each day. When we are productive, we continuously build wealth. When we hold a bag of gold, our wealth slowly erodes. Building a new world requires that we all establish the criteria for ourselves that we be allowed to work productively. These circles of people that I spoke about – they allow man to do what he does best. They allow the jobs to be distributed, so that we don’t all have to be our own policeman, or our own fireman. They allow us to produce food, to fish, to hunt, to gather, to enjoy, to create art, to raise children, to prosper.
When the world collapses, each of us can go into “survival mode” if we so choose, but some of us are going to go into “prospering mode”, and it will be one of the best times in history to live. It is your choice.
In fact, there is no reason to not already be in “prospering mode” – have you been living life “right” up until now? If not, there is always time to change, even if the end of the world doesn’t happen. It’s a better way to live.

During my time in the Marines I’ve hardly ever used the heater for anything more than to make a bomb. BTW, place the heater from the pouch in a sealable container. Preferably a 20 oz. bottle and then fill it about 1/4 with water and pitch it. It will either explode, melt the bottle and spray out, or shoot the lid off like a missile.

Posted on November 24, 2011 at 10:13pmCareful how you ‘barter’! Once ‘they’ know you’ve got food (and power), they’ll be back! Recent hurricanes and floods are NOT good test beds for collapse, as the inconvenience (no power, rush on food, no flush, no water, no hot water, no ice, etc.) go on for a week or two at most, and in most cases, gasoline is available within days to roam for food and essentials! I had no power for a week and really appreciate old-style gas hot water (NOT demand system) for hot showers! Water and hot water (to wash up from cleanup efforts) are essential! Electricity is really nice, but NOT essential, unless on well! But, oh that hot water!

Posted on November 24, 2011 at 10:00pmYou know, I tried years ago to get the NYSE to diversity, divide into perhaps 7 segments, relocate into different weather, geographic, demographic, electric utility/communications zones, both technology AND people, traders and all, divided and organized so that the sudden, utter destruction of any three would be such that ALL business could be picked up, seamlessly by the remaining 4! This would reduce the target, diversify and add robustness to the organization, spreak the crooks around so it wouldn’t be so easy to manipulate on a large scale, and imbed our sensitive economic structures into our society! And, I also tried to get NYC to develop a comm van that could communicate to the masses (after WT 1, and years before WT2), including copier/instant publishing at the 10′s of thousands of flyer level, low-power AM/FM radio, media interface, command/9-1-1 interface, multi-domain (police, fire, defense, rescue, etc.). I figured three trucks/buses could cover the Greater NY Metro Area. I never heard from the NYSE, and every year for awhile, I’d get a perfunctory letter from the NYFD (my letter was forwarded to them by the Mayor’s Office) telling my why this couldn’t be done, but thanks, anyway! When we are so busy bickering politically, pushing our morals on others, wasting our time ‘helping’ others, rather than challenging them to help themselves, and have our heads stuck so far up our collective butts that we need a glass navel to see where we’re going, no time .

Drinking water is essential(the EU notwithstanding) but how will you flush your toilets when the water systems go down? Bottled water is useless for that. Then there is toilet paper. Many people are buying gold, great for some things but wiping is not one of them Most people get through the day with any gold but will want some TP in their daily routine. I’m just sayin . . .

Posted on November 23, 2011 at 4:49pmI live on the Ohio river, would it not be easier to filter and treat the river water than to store some? It would have to be hauled to be able to heat it to clean with it. A half bucket of water will flush a toilet just fine as most toilets now are what? 1 1/2-2 gallon tanks? For me, storing food and taking care of the pets would be more of a task than trying to store water. I’d rather just take it from the river or a stream.

..MREs do NOT require water…you will need your regular water in your diet..but not for the MREs Only the freeze or dehydrated need water..
I think we’re ready…for what we don’t know..but..food, water, water filters, tp.:)..trailers/tents with propane..etcetcetc..
we are prayerful that it never comes to that.
We are lucky to live where we do. Most of the people we know are into survival mode at this point. and have been “gathering” for several years.
We also have the good sense to “not” tell everyone what we have. Outside people should believe you are poorer than a church mouse, with no resources.
Even if Obama is not re elected in 2012…we are in for a hard time Of course our fickle public will blame the new president…more turmoil.. Just be prepared…and pray that you never have to resort to your storage foods/goods

Cut power or set gas to pilot, shut off inlet valve, drain tank from bottom and vent from top, catch water in an inspection bottle–you’d be amazed to see 1/3 of bottle settles as ‘gel’ until the tank is flushed clear! After it drains, mostly, blast it with some fresh water and let it drain until it runs clear! Or, just use it for flushing–but what a waste of water! Take that stuff out to the rice paddy and recycle it!
