College Editor Cleverly Bypasses Newspaper Censorship by Going ‘Topless’

The Associated Press used this clever headline: “College paper goes topless for exotic dancer story.“ ”What?” you may ask. Well, it’s not what it seems.
Remember the story we brought you earlier this week of the Catholic university professor in Philadelphia who taught his business ethics class using strippers? Well, the college newspaper of La Salle University — where the incident occurred — wanted to publish a story about it. But officials didn’t want the story getting much play, so it told the editor that if he ran the story, he couldn’t feature it on the top of the front page. So he got clever.
In Thursday’s edition of the the Collegian, the top half was left blank, except for the words “See below the fold.”
Officials at the private Roman Catholic university have previously confirmed an investigation of the March 21 seminar.
The newspaper’s executive editor, Vinny Vella, says administrators initially forbade him from printing the article at all until their investigation was complete.
They relented after the Philadelphia City Paper broke the story April 8 but issued the story-location caveat. The university’s dean declined to comment.
“You need to stand up for yourself every once in a while,” Vella told Philly.com. “You can’t let authorities intimidate you.”
The Associated Press contributed to the report.

Posted on April 15, 2011 at 6:00pmI’m all for a free press, but first, a school newspaper is not the press. Second, if you have such loose morals, perhaps a Catholic school was the wrong choice for you.

Posted on April 15, 2011 at 4:49pmI guess I need to be educated about censorship. Why is this censorship? The University is a private body even if it accepts public funds in order to provide education to those who otherwise could not afford one. So why is it a big deal if they require a certain decorum in a college newspaper? To me this is not comparable to the Federal or a state government stopping someone from expressing a contrary point of view. This action by the university to me is not a freedom of speech issue. I see it as part of an education process….a faculty teaching its student.

Posted on April 15, 2011 at 3:23pmDoes the school own the paper and the equipment there? If so then they have every right to say no to the story. It was a cheap trick using a liberal word game that they tend to run to when they want to get their way around the rules. It’s like telling you they will not talk to your kids about sex so they hand out porn mags instead. i’d tell him that he could not use my press to print this stuff, does he then have the right to kick in my door and do it anyway because he needs my printer or his ideas can’t get printed? If he has his own paper / printer / ink and story he is welcome to do as he pleases but he can’t exercise his free speech on my dime when i do not agree. He is an EDITOR after all. He should understand that he himself chooses what can and can not run in that paper on a regular basis. If it is a school paper, then tough, it’s not his decision if they deem it should not run. It’s typical of a liberal to let that kind of power go to their head. give them an inch and they start deciding who lives and dies based on their lofty opinion that is always the prime directive.I’d assign a new editor and expe3ll the little creep.

Posted on April 15, 2011 at 2:21pmRemember the stripper incident at Duke Univ. in NC when the District Attorney Mike Nifong tried to fraudulently convict some lacrosse players. The DA and the Puke teachers had them all but convicted on false charges without a trial and never any apology. Now there’s a school where the teachers have real class. Yea Right..So much for the teachers in this country, I’m not saying professors because these people are far from that..

Posted on April 15, 2011 at 1:06pmA school where strippers are used in class by a business professor, and the administration strictly censors the newspaper on a legitimate news story about it? I‘m not sure the second part isn’t worse.
La Salle sounds like a GREAT place.

Good morning, hope all is good in Fla today.
I have to agree with you, at least the only ‘topless’ thing was the newspaper and nothing else. Got to admit though, it was a very clever way to get around the ban of censorship imposed by the college.
