College Football Game to Be Played With One End Zone

When Illinois and Northwestern kick off their football game on Saturday, things will be a little strange. That’s because the teams will only be playing with one offensive end zone.
The drastic decision was made in the name of safety. The teams are squaring off not at a normal football stadium, but rather a baseball field — Wrigley field, that is, home of the Chicago Cubs. The venue forced an odd field configuration that pushed the east end zone up against the famous ivy-covered brick wall.
ESPN explains:
The east end zone is just feet away from the right-field wall, and although there is padding, there still were concerns that players could be injured there.
Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald had said this week that he would have different game plans for each end zone to avoid the possibility of injury.
When a team is on offense Saturday, it will be positioned to head to the west end zone.
“Though it’s not ideal, it’s the right thing,“ Northwestern athletic director Jim Phillips said on ”The Waddle & Silvy Show” on ESPN 1000. “We’ve been planning for this for a while, there were no surprises. The field came out the way we thought, it ended up maybe being a little closer with some of the padding.

Posted on November 20, 2010 at 10:58amI am from Hoover, AL and our high school football team (GO BUCS!) plays many of its games at the Hoover Met. The Met is the baseball stadium for our minor league team, the B’ham Barons. It is a little awkward BUT our high school team plays there using 100 yds without any problems. Now, how can a HIGH SCHOOL team transition a field without problems yet a college game is using only one end zone? This is just wrong.
Seems like those of us from the South aren’t quite so dumb are we????? At least we can make 100 yard field.

Posted on November 20, 2010 at 8:51amWhats the big deal? When we were kids playing football, we played in only one endzone. When one team scored, the other team “walked” to the other end to recieve the kick. We always had some type of marker showing the unused endzone we had to cross for any touchdowns that might happen as a result of an interception or fumble. Change of possesion simple meant for teams to just trade sides of the football. Other rules we had were, three completions is a first down, 3 mississppi’s before a rush, and no hitting in the nuts.

Posted on November 20, 2010 at 11:46amWatch the video. Part of the concern is field direction changes DURING a play. (Turnovers – fumbles – interceptions can flip a field DURING a play.)

Posted on November 20, 2010 at 12:42pm@THE BRAIN
Change of posession is not a factor. The concern with the wall is for recievers blazing at full speed on a post route drilling the wall trying to stretch out to make a catch. A defender picking up a fumble or getting an interception and running it back for a touchdown isn’t in any danger of accidentally running into a wall that is 40 feet from the goal line. The difference is the defensive guy already has the ball and the play is over as soon as he hits the front of the end zone.

Posted on November 20, 2010 at 1:20pmI understand that, but that was the reason given for the lingering concerns.
Why use a baseball field instead of a purpose built facility in the first place?
Did Soldier field get torn down and not replaced? Do both teams not have their own stadium?
Is there a problem televising it if they want more fans to see it? Pay per view if they want viewership paid for.
There’s a serious “lacking common sense” factor here. If they are only going to use half of the field only HALF of the fans will get a decent view ANYHOW and less than that if it is a BASEBALL stadium as the configuration already forces play further from the seats.

Posted on November 20, 2010 at 8:15amA little less hate, maybe folks? Sure it’s a bit of a logistical nightmare, but the history of this field is undeniable. It’ll be a treat for these youngsters to dress out and play on Wrigley. Also, it illustrates the need for an improvement in the available amenities there. “Anything for a buck”? Okay, I’ll buy that. But were I still in Chi-Town I‘d also damn sure be buying tickets to the first college game played here since the 40’s. Great experience, great press. Should be a fun game to watch.

Posted on November 20, 2010 at 12:33pmThe same reason they played a hockey game there. Because it’s the most recognizeable and famous field still being used in the world of sports. And it’s a thrill for any athlete to compete there, no matter if it’s the sport that was intended to be played there or not.
By the way the Bears played their games at Wrigley Field for 49 years. There’s nothing strange about playing football there. The morons are the representatives from the schools that worked with the Cubs people on the field layout. There is the established layout that the Bears used for 49 years that doesn’t put an endzone up against a wall…but the schools didn’t want to use that configuration because of seating and view concerns.

Posted on November 20, 2010 at 1:31pm@Rowgue – what’s strange is that the Bears played on a regulated field. Chicago economics has influence the wrong decision to change playing rules that differ from other games at play.

Posted on November 20, 2010 at 12:24pmHey, I just spent that last twenty minutes reading in The National Post how the Tides foundation has infiltrated Canada and Vancouver’s civic government. They have been working for the last 15 years to transform western Canada, starting with Vanccouver, into some sort of eco-justice haven that will be the launchpad for changing the world. So, please, keep your loopy football field, you have given us enough for now. (Besides, we are still trying to figure how our football fields have somehow have 110 yard fields and 25 yard end zones?! – if they had a game at Wrigley the bleachers would be in play) Cheers!
