BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) — An Oregon football player helped a choking diner during the traditional Beef Bowl, which brings the teams playing in the Rose Bowl to Lawry’s in Beverly Hills for prime rib.
City News Service says Paul Diamond began choking a bit while eating Wednesday.
Oregon guard Mark Asper performed the Heimlich maneuver on Diamond, helping him cough the meat up.
Diamond says he was breathing throughout and not in too much distress, describing it as “not a big deal.”
Diamond’s son Tom is an Oregon senior.
The Beef Bowl traditionally brings the teams to the restaurant on separate nights for a dinner before the game.
Oregon’s opponent, Wisconsin, visits Lawry’s Thursday.

Posted on December 29, 2011 at 10:29pmOutstanding Mr. Asper! I had to perform the Heimlich Maneuver once on an 8th grade boy who was a head taller than me. It really works when done properly. Everyone should learn how to do this & basic first aid.

Posted on December 30, 2011 at 7:26pmOf course you would bet he’s white! The headline was NOT “Player chokes man and steals his nike’s”.Where in that case your most sure bet would be the player is BLACK!

Posted on December 29, 2011 at 1:46pmNot to rain on a nice story with a happy ending, but I was taught that if the victim can still breathe (as the victim claimed), you should encourage them to cough it up themselves. The Heimlich works best and is intended to be administered when the airway is totally blocked. It is then that you achieve adequate air pressure to expel the obstruction. Of course, the report was very brief, and maybe the the victim was in greater distress than he wanted to admit.

Posted on December 29, 2011 at 3:03pmI would rather have the person assisting me do things in the way that EMT’s have found work best. I have had first aid instructors tell me that administering the Heimlich when food is partially blocking the airway can actually make things worse, causing the obstruction to get lodged deeper in the esophagus. So, great for everyone to learn how to do the maneuver, but let’s all learn how to do it right. As for armchair quarterbacking, my friend, I have had ample opportunity over the years to help folks with first aid. You need to calm down.

Posted on December 29, 2011 at 7:41pmWordweaver is quite right about when to perform the Heimlich and when not to. I have been a paramedic for 18 years, am a shift supervisor and also instruct Paramedic classes at the local college. If someone appears to be choking you ask them if they are choking. If they cant talk, they are not choking, if they are coughing they are not choking. Thats is called a partial foreign body airway obstruction. You are to encourage the patient to continue coughing. If they reach a point where they are unable to cough and start becoming cyanotic then you perform the Heimlich, otherwise you can make a partial foreign body airway obstruction progress to complete.

Posted on December 29, 2011 at 9:49pmIf you are alone when you start to choke, you can also preform the Heimlich on yourself. I had an aspirin lodge in my airway once. It is true that you can’t make a sound or cough. No breath means no sound. I formed a ball with my two fists and pushed firmly on my diaphragm..*upper stomach*. The pill shot out like a bullet, thank God.

Posted on December 29, 2011 at 1:12pmWhy is this news on The Blaze? Why would anyone care if he was a college football player or a brick layer? I imagine that this type incident happens numerous times per day. Good for them, but this isn’t worthy of anything but the local paper.

Posted on December 29, 2011 at 2:05pmIt is called a “good news – human interest” story designed to inspire hope and shine a light on the idea that all of humanity is not cold heartless mind-numbed self serving takers for cyring out loud go back to huffpo or media matters where your illinformed commentary belongs since the relevance here seems to be lost on you. Here’s another though, try coming up with some of the possible answers to your own question in a reasoned fashion, if you can’t come up with anything and are still at a loss for what most people will easily determine, then ask your question. Try using your head for something beside holding your ears apart

Posted on December 29, 2011 at 12:45pmThis is a procedure that all should be taught. My son, when younger, grabbed an uncooked hotdog at a picnic, took a bite and choked on it. I swear that thing went 20′ before hitting the ground. What a relief THAT was.
God bless this young man.

Posted on December 29, 2011 at 1:08pmGood job young man….I have personally performed this twice on people that were choking. Anyone that does not know how to perform this, learn it….I just reacted, applied it as I was taught and the obstruction popped right out. One a lady choking on a piece of celery with peanut butter and the other one of my boot LT’s choking on beenie weenie;s from C-rats
