A sociology professor at Northern Michigan University has purportedly offered her students extra credit for taking part in a local Occupy protest.

Professor Jeanne M. Lorentzen (Media credit: Northern Michigan University website)
According to an email obtained by The Blaze, Professor Jeanne Lorentzen is offering students in her introductory sociology course 20 extra credit points if they attend an Occupy the Upper Peninsula demonstration with her on Saturday. Students who do not wish to attend the protest have the option of writing a 20-page term paper about a social movement to receive the same extra credit. Neither assignment is compulsory.
The email says students who choose to attend must make a protest sign that can say anything as long as it’s not “offensive, rude or divisive.” To qualify for the extra credit, students must sign an attendance sheet twice, at the beginning and end of the march.
Lorentzen did not return multiple phone call and email requests for comment to confirm the extra credit offer, but a Facebook profile for “Jeanne M. Lorentzen, prof @ NMU” is filled with pro-Occupy Wall Street articles, photos and postings. She “likes” both the pages for “Occupy the UP” and “Occupy the UP: NMU Students and Faculty.”
On Thursday, she posted a MoveOn.org petition asking New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg not to evict the Occupy Wall Street protesters with the comment, “Please sign the petition!“ An earlier post notes ”Occupy Marquette is happening this Saturday.”
The full text of the email is reproduced below:

Extra Credit Option
by Jeanne Lorentzen – Thursday, 13 October 2011, 01:52 PM
———————————————————————
Extra Credit Possibility
This assignment requires you to become involved in a social movement. Because activities associated with social movements are limited in the Marquette area, students in SO101 typically engage in a group exercise during class in which they construct a social movement. However, the Occupy Social Movement (specifically Occupy the U.P.) is a once in a lifetime opportunity for students to experience involvement in a social movement first hand. The Occupy Movement is not aligned with any particular political party as it focuses on a multitude of social inequalities a topic we’ve been studying for the last week, and which we will continue to study (Global Stratification) for the next week. The ideas we’ve been addressing in class are also ideas that the Occupy Movement defines as important social ideas. The movement has not defined how these problems should be addressed but is, instead, attempting to make the problems public issues.
In order to earn 20 extra credit points students must participate in the march that is planned for Saturday, October 15th. The march starts at 10 a.m., but students who choose to do this assignment should meet me in Harlow Park, right next to Washington St., by at least 9:45 a.m. Students must make a protest sign (as long as it’s not offensive, rude or divisive you can write anything) and sign an attendance sheet twice, once at 9:45 a.m. and once after the march is over.
The organizers have been working with the Marquette Police, who were very supportive and helpful, in order to insure a safe and non-violent march. Those students who choose not to participate in the Occupy the U.P. march on Saturday may instead choose to write a 20 page term paper on a particular social movement and earn 20 extra credit points. You may choose to one or the other, but not both. You may also choose to do neither option.
The term paper must be double spaced, written in Ariel 11 point font, with 1 inch margins on all 4 sides. The paper should be a critical sociological analysis of a particular social movement and must include at least 5 substantive concepts from the course text. The paper will be due October 30th by 11 p.m., and must be submitted via EduCat.

University spokeswoman Kristi Evans said she had not heard about the assignment and though she couldn’t confirm it, saw no reason to think it would not be a real offer.
From the school’s perspective, Evans said there was nothing wrong with the assignment because students aren’t specifically required to attend, and have an alternative assignment they can do instead.
“The university doesn’t oversee what professors assign for extra credit,” she said, noting that as long as it doesn’t involve an “immoral or unethical” activity the school does not have reason to step in. NMU is a public university.

Dan Adamini, chair of the Marquette County Republican Party, said the assignment seemed very one-sided. He said he hoped that if extra credit is being given for attending Occupy U.P., students could get the same extra credit for attending a different demonstration they deemed “more sensible.”
“Whatever the topic is, I hope if you’re going to give extra credit for something like this, fairness would dictate you give extra credit for something on the other side,” he said.
Adamini disputed Lorentzen’s statement that “activities associated with social movements are limited in the Marquette area,” saying Marquette reguarly has marches and demonstrations for gay rights, abortion, union rights, the environment and the Tea Party movement.
“She’s choosing this one versus something might be conservative in nature,” he said.
He also dismissed the offer of a 20-page term paper for students who didn’t want to demonstrate, saying, “I‘m not sure that’s the equivalent of taking a Saturday morning and taking a walk.”

If a student made a sign saying “This protest is offensive, rude & divisive” will they get the extra credit points?

Posted on October 15, 2011 at 11:40amProvided the professor agrees that attending and participating in any protest qualifies I don’t think she did anything wrong. Or even any protest of similar size or covering a certain number of different complaints. If a professor was assigning people extra credit for participating in a tea party rally I doubt any of us would want him/her fired. It isn’t fair to say this protest “only” or an essay. If there isn’t a qualifying protest in the area though, I don’t think she did anything wrong. I have no doubt she’s a flaming liberal, and as one, likely extremely unfair. Most professors are unfair, flaming liberals who think they are superior to everyone who disagrees with them and use their position to indoctrinate the students they“teach”.

Posted on October 15, 2011 at 11:58amA college professor should not be pushing any student in any political direction. Tenure has given Progressive Socialist professors the idea that they can teach the students across this nation anything they want with no merit. The blame doesn’t completely fall on the professor, the student has to take personal responsibility for their own actions and quit being a puppet of their teachings by fact checking what their professors teach when it come to history or political science. Socialism doesn’t work, never has, never will, it destroys cities, states and countries. Take a good look at the poorest cities in our nation, I guarantee you they have been ran by a Socialist Government within our Republic. The Tea Party and its friends stand behind the U.S. Constitution, the Constitution doesn’t need the help of college professors. Read the U.S. Constitution as ratified and tell me our Federal Government operates under the Law. Fix Big GOVERNMENT, you fix the problem.

Posted on October 15, 2011 at 12:13pmThe kettle is steaming……As Savage stated yesterday this protest movement has the potential to creat a huge backlash and bloodbath. Conservatives including violent conservative groups such as the skin heads, american nazi’s, etc. are watching this and they are begining to boil. This 99% group whether they know it or not is a communist movement, extreme right wing groups will not tolerate it,
Report Post »thus creating the possiblility of a blood bath. Then as Savage related it, the non-extreme conservatives who are also becoming angryer and angryer (such as myself) could join in with the extreme groups and the blood bath is on. Just as what happend and brought Hitler into power. It was the Nazi‘s that put down the communist movement in Germany in the late 20’s early 30′s with the majority of germans against the communists looked at Hitler as a hero for doing so, which led to the demise of the whole country and the slaughter of millions in WW2. History always repeats itself, so apparently here we go again.

Just wondering. Do you favor grape or cherry kool aid?
Are you serious? Kids who attend Tea Party rallies are mocked and ridiculed by their progressive teachers (few may be the exception) not given extra credit. This is nothing more then a political grade pay off. Disgusting. And if a teacher did the same for a tea party rally it would still be a political grade pay off.
One thing I’d like to know is if any of these kids who went to these rallies and came away with the experience that the entire OWS movement is a Marxist, Socialist and anarchist rally bent on the destruction of the American system Would he/she still get the same grade as some zombie who hasn’t a clue of Dodd / Frank.

I suspect for those who opt out of going to the OWS wherever it is there, and they choose to write a term paper and it no matter how poigniantly that student presented their opinion, the grade received for such open discent to her “enlightend opinion” and worse yet to have the gall to do it in her class would be detrimental to their success on the extra credit effort and most certainly future core classwork and testing. CIVICS is no longer taught in our schools and the kids who attended the Wisconsin rally at the beginning of the year went on to get much higher grades than they previously had. It has something to do with personal involvement – which is the best education that anyone could have. I lived in Nazi occupied Europe in WW2 and because of that I am a supporter of those who don’t have a voice. If, like most of you guys, I only learned about that era from a book – I probably would be thinking like you. Thank god for my ‘tough’ young life. It gave me character.

Posted on October 15, 2011 at 11:07amThis is what is wrong with the education system in this country. The public schools and universities are full of crack pots and commies. Catholic schools are more discriminating in their hiring practices and choose people who want to teach and not indoctrinate.

Posted on October 15, 2011 at 11:37amCulp: That‘s because these parents were willing to pay double for their children’s “separate but superior” education! They paid with their taxes, as required by law, to support the union dominated mess of public education while they paid again to send their children to a private school. It takes commitment and sacrifice to raise a child well. Something the “freebie” crowd just doesn’t understand or value.

Posted on October 15, 2011 at 11:56amCulpergang apparently you have missed the talk of eliminating the Department of Education and the no-fire policy in teacher unions. If we don’t get back to basics in education and reward those teachers who do a good job and fire those who are not cut out to be teachers, then our children and grandchildren will suffer the consequences. We just had a report for students here in Colorado and the majority could not pass tenth grade math.
If you can‘t recognize that someone who can’t get fired or it takes an act of Congress does not need to do a good job in their job, then you will get a bunch of idiot kids who can‘t think for themselves and won’t have the education to get a job. They will become mindless trolls beholding to the government for their existence; no purpose in life.
I really think the young kids, which might describe you, just have no clue what Socialism, Communism, and Marxism really means. They just might be surprised when the time comes, what they expected is not what they get, why? Because the upper level Progressives are just using you and others to gain Power. Do you really think they care about you? Did Hitler care about the Jews? Don’t be naive, they will throw you out like yesterday’s garbage.

Posted on October 15, 2011 at 11:05amI see less of a problem here as they are clearly studying mass social movements in their classwork. Remember that “liking” on Facebook does not actually mean that you like it, merely that you want to keep track of it. Let’s not jump to conclusions. That is using stereotypes.
The only problem would be if the teacher requires sympathy with the general protest. A non-divisive sign could be something like “I like peanut butter”. If she gives credit for that I’m good with it.
As to the imbalance between going to a march and writing a 20 page paper, I could see the teacher really wanting the students to SEE a social movement in action rather than merely work with secondary sources which do not give the flavor (and odor!) or the actual movement.
Yes, like all of you I assume that the teacher has sympathies for the movement, but we do little to advance our cause by blaming before investigating.
As to the Republican commentary, he has fallen for the bait. The teacher hasn’t (yet) required any sympathy for the Occupy cause. Yes, the TEA Party is a good example of a social movement but it is not at its infancy as the Occupy movement is. From a teaching standpoint that is material.
I’m a bit of a historian and can see value in the assignment if it is dispassionate and unbiased. If someone doesn’t get EC because they disagree with the movement jump in with both feet.

Posted on October 15, 2011 at 11:35amGood comments. Apparently a student would be free to carry a sign saying “Impeach Barney Frank,“ ”The 1% pay 40% of the Taxes,“ or ”Greed is Good,” and still get the extra credit. Or would those be “rude, offensive or divisive?” I wish my professors had done things like this when I was in college!
Report Post »Jennifer_D
Posted on October 15, 2011 at 11:05amThis is certainly a biased assignment that shows preference towards the left. It is not appropriate, but common on college campuses! They are liberal indoctrination pits. Notice how students have the options to go to the protest or write a !20! page paper?!?! If you are already bogged down with assignments wouldn’t a student be likely to choose the least time consuming option? Even if you stayed at the protest for several hours it still probably wouldn’t come close to the amount of time required to write a 20 page paper.
It is one thing for an instructor to have their own personal opinions, but when they use their classroom as an activist platform that is exploitation of students and the role of instructor. People should always think for themselves and formulate their opinions based upon their own rationale.
I’d still opt for the paper because of principle.
