‘Not My Debt’: College Students Refuse Pledge to Pay Their Share of National Debt

Last week, we brought you video from a guy who caught liberal college students eager to redistribute wealth but not grades. Now, that same guy (Oliver Darcy) is back with another experiment: If college students are opposed to the Republican plan to cut spending to reduce the national debt, might they be willing to reduce the deficit by paying their share of the national debt?

Would those college students sign a pledge vowing to pay their approximate $47,000 share? The answer?

Well, there was this: “I don’t contribute to the national debt.”

This: “I don’t have any debt.”

And this: “It’s not my debt.”

We’ll take that as a “no.” But those curious responses beg the question: Have these college students ever taken an economics class? “It’s not my debt.” Really?

But the real gems come in the second half of the video, when the students offer their suggestions on how to get rid of the national debt. You know, like “abolish the government” and “Fu** the military.”

Timothy Geithner, Federal Reserve Sabotuer, always says our debt is backed “with the full faith and credit of the United States Treasury.”

I keep telling you, that means you will be hauled off to a FEMA CIVILIAN LABOR CAMP to pay off the national debt, and you still aren’t listening.

Why the hell would ANYBODY Sign a pledge to pay back a debt, THAT ISN’T OURS?!?!?

Where the hell is 14 trillion dollars worth of ANYTHING?!?!?!

We haven’t seen it…that’s because the FED has given it away to MEGA CORPS and FOREIGN BANKS and MEDIA ORGANIZATIONS and ALIENS and LORD KNOWS WHO OR WHAT ELSE.

That’s why Ron Paul is the ONLY CANDIDATE that is serious about ANYTHING, you can’t address ANY FISCAL ISSUES without addressing THE FED FIRST, and ABOLISHING IT.

    Because the DEBT

    CANNOT

    BE

    PAID!

    It must be abolished.

    Abolish all debt.

The left and the right is scared to DEATh of this man, because he will end the BS of the FEd once and for all.

I can’t watch the video b/c of the filter that I have on my cpu, so I can’t really speak to it. But, I do want to point out that not all of us got loans/grants…some of us actually paid our way. I’ve been enrolled in college since 2003, and have worked (way) more than the 40 hour week, doing HARD construction work, to make the money necessary to pay for my classes. I finally made it into a nursing program last January, and will graduate next Thursday. I haven’t borrowed any money, I’ve lived in large part off of canned goods, water (in 3L bottles), and whatever else I can carry in my toolbox. I paid my (new) truck off in 2 years, and am still at home only b/c I couldn’t afford to move away and still do nursing. This idea that’s out there that all of us (college folk), are sorry and live off of our parents, government, or whoever else is sickening and repulsive. I for one paid my own way, sacrificed, and have made it. I know quite a few others that have too. I fully realize that there are a lot of leeches out there…but, remember that it was not my generation that started all of these welfare programs. We’re just the ones that have to pay for them.

      @FloridaRunner

I too worked my way through school with no loans; which made my graduation in 2002 that much sweeter. However, it is important to note that if you are going to a public college, you’re tuition is being subsidized by the Florida residents and visitors (tourists). That’s why if you are an out of state student going to a Florida college tuition is actually almost double that of a registered Florida resident. So, in a way, even if you take no loans, you are still taking tax payer resources by attending college. You can’t even get away from someone assisting you these days, whether you want it or not.

      GHOST,

I’ve read your posts and know you are a great thinker. So I am certain that you understand MrsClark’s point. While I agree we shouldn’t continue down the path of socialist programs and eliminate or significantly reduce the ones we have, we are all responsible for the debt this country has. Many of these programs were not what I voted for or were in place before my birth or of voting age as well. Nevertheless, because I live in this country, I am by default responsible for the repayment of the debt our represented leaders have imposed upon us.

The 2010 mid-term election only convinced me this country is in a spiral decline. We don’t have enough true, honorable leaders to effect the difficult choices so desperately needed. Especially considering the indoctrinated college crowd voted and will continue to vote for the progressive liberals who will drive the socialist agenda to this country’s demise.

      @COPATRIOTS

Let me make it more clear. I *am* on the hook for all Constitutionally sound spending. So, yes, the Post Office for certain, national defense quite so, the erection and maintenance of buildings used for the three branches of government, their salaries, all that yes certainly. However, un Constitutional spending is spending that is going on outside of the constraints of the Constitution, which is technically and fitfully illegal, and is the spending of gangsters. I am not obliged to cover the spending habits of gangsters acting against my interest, acting completely at odds with the Constitution and the powers and responsibilities therein. To claim otherwise is to state that I am responsible for the debts of Al Capone. I am not.

Additionally, the Federal Reserve has established a debt based currency that creates debt by its very existence, also completely at odds with the Constitution which *mandates* a silver and gold based currency system. Every fiat dollar printed puts me in debt @ its cost plus a percentage. To pay off that fiat based debt requires fiat money which puts me further in debt. I cannot owe money on a system set up to makes me more indebted by even trying to pay off that debt. It’s a logical and real impossibility.

So no, I own exactly what the Constitution mandates, and no more. And further, I do not owe a cent against unconstitutional fiat based monetary debt.

They may not be very intelligent, but they understand the power of Civil Disobedience (unlike the Conservatives). Example: If 100 milllion Americans refused to pay their taxes, the government would have to stop and listen to our grievance. They certainly are not going to jail 100 million people and and once it began it would grow and grow. These young people feel no loyalty to a government that they feel is screwed up beyond repair.

I disagree that this upcoming generation will do anything. They’ll assimilate just like everybody else (or most everybody else). They are *for* big government, generally, not against it. They may seeth at the taxes, but they’ve been taught to accept any explanation for the growth of government. Their Fuhrer Du Jour will come on television, tell them why sacrificing 90% of their income is the “just” thing to do, and they’ll do it. Don’t kid yourself.

A very good point and I agree as I have always said this generation is the most self centered and egotistcal ever produced. No wonder! We have filled their heads full of themselves by awarding them for just being here.

This is why I believe that in the final analysis that we and they will be forced into labor to repay debts owed to the international community or be killed. China is not going to let the spoiled Americans off the hook for this debt. These kids will then become traitors looking for a way to pin this on somebody else even though they took government grants (debts) and student loans (subsidized US taxpayer) and have yet to pay them back.

We are living well beyond our means and we have virtually nothing to show for the socalled “Investment” many a politician has said must be made to move us into the future. Well the future is here and it looks more bleak than it did 10-15-20-30 years ago. Aren’t we supposed to be getting more intelligent with all this education? If that were true wouldn’t we also be better equipped to solve our hardest problems. Seems when all the arguing stops it really comes down to personal responsibility and doing the right thing. We are far from anything recognizable as a moral and just nation. We will pay for that in more ways than one.

I am repaying all my debts and still in my upside down home. I will never own this home but I took the loan and I alone am responsible for repaying it as long as I have the income and means to do so.

Everyone reading this needs to do their part and repay every loan and stop looking around for excuses to get out of them ie short sale, walk aways, refusal.

      Thanks for reading.

I’m 26, an independent with conservative/libertarian tenancies and I usually (but not always) vote republican. I’ve had arguments about this kind of thing (national debt, social security, and whatever else) with my grandparents and other people before. The basis of their argument tends to come down to “they did their part, now it’s my turn to do mine.” I can’t help but view this as theft, I don’t want social security, I can’t help that the debt is so high. It’s not my fault. I don’t mind paying taxes….but it ****** me off that I have to work to support other people, especially when those people don’t need it (my grandparents), and probably already recouped what they put into social security. In short, I’m pissed, and there is not much I can do about it.

Your grandparents are right. They entered into a social contract many years ago, worked hard all their lives, and yes, they did their part. You may be correct that they have “already recouped what they put into it”, but that wasn’t the deal. It would be morally wrong to renege at this point. If given the option, most of them probably would have rather ket the money they paid into Social Security and invested it as they saw fit but they weren’t given that option. Social Security needs to be reworked, I don’t believe anyone disputes that. However, a nation that doesn‘t honor it’s commitments, no matter how long ago they were made, is in grave danger of not being trusted to do so in the future. Furthermore, it wouldn’t be exactly admirable to single out the elderly (who, by the way aren’t the only recipients of Social Security benefits) to take advantage of just because you think can.

“Our society must make it right and possible for old people not to fear the young or be deserted by them, for the test of a civilization is the way that it cares for its helpless members.”

Maybe, but seeing as I’ve never had a choice in the matter, and seeing as how there will be so many more people living off of social security than people working in the next few years, I can’t help but feel used. Let’s talk about attitudes for a minute. The generations before me started welfare, the made abortion legal, they put off making sacrifices so they could live life as they pleased. I realize that not all people who came before me have this mindset, but it is this attitude (the welfare, pro-abortion mindset) that has prevailed. If they hadn’t made it legal to murder babies, we’d have more people to pay for their welfare.

      I have no problem with service/or obligation, so long as everybody has a say in the matter. I’m a nurse; I get to serve people at their worst. I wipe their butts when they can’t do it their-self, I bath them when necessary, and I will do whatever my patient needs done. I cannot put into words how grateful I am to serve these people when they need it. But, I made the choice to pursue this career, nobody forced me into it.       @ Florida;
A wee bit selfish aren’t we? My guess is you wouldn’t sign the pledge either. Problem with your argument: People like me 60+ never got the oportunity to opt out of social security and invest in something that gives a bigger benifit. I also invcested but that extra will give me a nice vacation and car. Of course considering inflation today I might get an extra loaf of bread, So MAYBE some us us will pull more back than we put in. But how many actually put in that get it? What’s the life span? How many died before they got to retire? death benifits are lower. DId you read Ayn Rands explination of why a rich person should takes what BELONGS TO THEM?. The gubmnet TOOK IT FROM YOU. When your parents are old and feeble are you taking them under your wing and caring for them, washing and feeding like some other countires do? probably not. Look lin the mirror and see what kind of person you’ve become. More money minded and dollar driven. We reap what we sow?

May I add a perspective – I’ve paid into SS, Mcare and Mcaid all of my working life – I am in my early 50′s, and I will probably not see a dime in return. Do I moan and cry over it – nope. I do not like the programs, because they are socialistic. I’d prefer to KEEP my money and ivest it myself, sink or swim on my own. This was forced upon me by my FREEDOM loving FDR, and LBJ gov’ts. And the new budgets have a cutoff at age 55 years for this new change – can you say I am screwed – sure can. Not enough time left for me to save enough for retirement, but young enough to be left out – isn’t that special. I say we get rid of the liberal/socialist/comminists from our midst, and really put our heads together for a viable soultion. One solution, is take seniors who are rich enough to have enough to retire, give them a one time payback of what they put in or a % thereof, and they get nothing after that. Read my posts above for other solutions. I know, they are just my opinions!

      @zman
Of course you’re assuming that I don’t help my family, that I live in my own little world focused on myself. When in fact I live within 5 miles of most of my family that needs help from others, and my family has long made a practice out of serving those of us in need. I’ve worked for my dad and grandpa, and got paid less than others who worked for them. Why? Because I am loyal and want to help. I help my grandparents, and my grandmother’s parents, who live beside each other. Many times I’ve been woken up in the middle of the night to go over there only for nothing to be wrong. Why? Because I love my grandparents, and I realize that life is not about my wants (unlike those who demand “their” benefits at the expense of others). I got to care for my great-grandpa, my grandmother’s stepdad, as he died this past Christmas Eve. It was one of the most humbling experiences of my life. I did it out of love. My grandmother has spent most of the last 12 years caring for her mom after she had her stroke. She’s given up as large portion of her life to the service of her mom. My mom does the same for her grandma (the one I was just talking about), as well as her other grandparents, all of whom have passed except for a grandma that is not really kin to us, but is loved and treated as family. I have a rich tradition of family service to look back on and emulate. The ultimate example of service is my Lord Jesus, the one who made me (and you), and came down here to serve and love us. Sometimes I picture Him walking through the desert, off in the distance. I see Him and I go running after Him. I catch Him, and fall at His feet. I try to wash them; I try to tell Him how much I love Him. But, before I do, He starts to care for me, and He tells me how much He loves me. I can’t think of anything more profound. My point is that he chose to serve us…he was not forced. It’s this voluntary service that is the most profound, and that I have been blessed to see in my own family.

      Model****,

This kid from Florida made perfect sense to me. What, specifically, did he say that was wrong? Is it that you are now on SSI and you resent that he feels he should not have to pay into that system (for which he will eventually NOT receive anything) so that you can continue to receive your SSI? If not that, then what? Again, he makes perfect sense. Please respond.

Matter of fact, I would love for them to reform into a limited partnership, because that would consolidate all the rich tax cheaters into one big spot so everyone could see.

It isn’t like they have their own assets invested anyway, they are still getting ridiculous loans from the Federal Government, so they’re never risking their own assets. They claim their losses as a tax write off and act as silent partners behind the scenes making decisions but trying to convince the government that they aren’t involved with managment and daily operations to assuage the illusion of impropriety.

In other words, they are deceptive tax cheats who protect their assets while risking others and lying to the Feds.

That is the natural progression of things. Let’s say their are four tax groups with group one being the poorest. So at first only group Four gets higher taxes, unit its wealth is reduced to where group three and gout four have now merged into group three wealth. NOTE that group One is no wealthier because of the taxes. Now Group three is wealthy so they get taxed down to merge with group two, bye, bye group three. Again group one is still not gaining wealth. Tax group two, now everybody a group one. Now tax group one and everyones a slave, now don‘t tax the slaves just don’t pay them at all.

To take a contrarian view here, the debt wasn’t created by them, authorized by them nor did they help cheerlead the efforts that made the vast majority of the debt go on the books. Now granted, they probably will the moment they walk into a voting booth and pull the lever for “Tax’em Hard And Spend It Quick Incorporated ™”.

Hells bells, philosophically and politically I believe that I actually only consent to such a small amount of government that my actual impact for my government choices could be paid for, annually, from a small percentage of my first paycheque of the year and then I’d be done.

Fact is, 99.999-n% of the debt was created without my consent, against my wishes, against my beliefs, philosophy and politics, and most of it long before I was ever born. How I came to be held accountable for the bad choices of those long dead, and the worse choices of those alive now whom I vehemently oppose at every turn, I just don’t know.

He was well educated, mild mannered, had charisma, good speaker and community organizer, sounds great doesn’t he?

Well, he organized the youth of his country, Cambodia, he indoctrinated the youth, by brainwashing against the rich, he demagoged the rich, and whipped up the youth to hate them. These were kids 14-18 years old, you know the gullible KIDS, not fully educated, not fully developed mentally, yeah the KIDS.

Well, due to his charisma, he go elected, by the educated masses, and when he got into power, he started on the kids, and he convinced them the rich were evil, they were their enemies of the state, you see he was a Marxist. After he was through with his indoctrination, he commanded them to KILL EVERYONE wearing GLASSES. You know what happened:

These KIDS murdered 3 million Cambodians for this little despot, planted them in mass graves and went on his merry way!

Does this sound a bit familiar to what is happening here to OUR KIDS? Better watch out, better be prepared for the unTHINKABLE, it can happen. Remember the Cal – Mexican-American kids chaining themselves to desks, whipped up into a frenzy? Ever consider, these kids, joining the unions and causing much violence here?? Fix Social Security by REALLY putting th money in a LOCK BOX, no more IOU’s. We could then LOWER corporate taxes to make them competitive again, AND MAKE THEM PAY THEIR fair share of taxes. Establish ONE term politicians PERIOD. Eliminate judicial appointments for LIFE, make them serve terms. Eliminate collective barganing and Unions, eliminate teacher/fire/police unions, or make them go PRIVATE. Eliminate funding for Abortions, NPR and PBS, make all of them also go private. Eliminate ALL lobby’s, and special interests influencing votes of our Pols. Defund the DoE, DEA, EPA and all of the monster Departments who regulate us to death. Deport ALL illegals, close the borders, or militarize them. Ban Communists/Socialists/Muslims/Liaberals from holding office. Blue Dog Democrats are ok people, they can stay. Ban Executive Orders, signing statements, and ENFORCE the Constitution. They are settign themselves up and walking right into the trap they so adamantly support. It is truly disappointing that these supposedly intelligent kids do not see this obvious contradiction. I‘m willing to bet if you asked kids the same age that didn’t have the grades or money to go to college and are working for a living at 18 the same question they will give you a much more cogent response based on their daily reality of not being able to spend more than the paymasters (IRS) let them take home.

Frankly I find the whole lot of you pathetic intellects. the true knee-jerkers here are you.

In 1993 the Clinton administration gifted Archer Daniels Midland with 600 million of your dollars (in the form of debt) so ADM could advertise its products overseas (Reason Magazine). Okay you group of geniuses, how much of that debt do you accept? For me, none.

Same year, 1993, the Clinton administration gifted the Popcorn Council of America with 300 million dollars of your money (in the form of debt). Just how much of that debt do you believe is yours? For me the answer is none, not a freaking dime.

The Obama administration has used massive debt to purchase General Motors and subsequently gift the UAW with majority ownership……your tax dollars. So how much of that debt do you own, how much do you accept as yours to repay? For me the answer is none.

The things I mention are really only a teeny tip of the iceberg of stupid give-aways and squandering on stupid programs and ideas.

Fools, look at the situation and think before you finger your keyboards.

You have a government that run-amok long before most of us were born, both sides of the political spectrum has used debt to feather the nests of favored businesses, and Congress has used the power to create debt to feather its own nest………and you guys claim that debt as your own.

      I don’t.

Probably because these children are never allowed to fail… they do not actually LEARN anything.

Government debt(10k per student/year) 120,000 bucks that you owe right there. How about being protected by fire or police? Guess what, that is your government debt. Don’t you care about your grandparents? Do you want to take away their Social Security and their Medicare, that is the major portion of our GOVERNMENT debt, that you will owe. Oh, and lets not forget the poor, because they cannot afford health care, Medicaid, that is also part of your government debt. You want to starve poor children? government debt. See, this is where hypocrisy is at its worst. Every one of these things, they all scream that we have to have, and government has to pay for, but now they don’t want to pay their “fair share”.

You don’t know how right you are and this goes beyond the students to the faculty as well. It a liberal herd mentality and social acceptance thing in our indoctrination (I mean educational) systems. I‘ve owned and lost several businesses know alot of the pitfalls as I’ve lived and learned from them. Recently I had went to an event and had a nice conversation with a couple of professor about the economy how we got here and what I think we should do about it. When a business professor got his panties in a bunch and started trying to bully the conversation and use his credentials as some kind of authoritative badge. Well I put it too him simply first I asked how many companies has he ran and then I asked how many jobs outside of telling kids what to think as he worked …a resounding zero…Then I put it to him point blank having the ability to remember what some teacher tells you make you nothing more than a parrot mimicing it’s handlers. I told him to talk to me when he’s has some experience outside of fantasy liberal land you know that place called the real world. And it most be true that those who can do(tapping myself) and those who can’t teach. You could have heard a pin drop needless to say I don‘t believe I’ll invited to his house for dinner.

As everyone focuses on Debt at the Federal level, they forget another BIG looming problem: From CNNMoney

States are $1.26 trillion in the hole when it comes to their pension and retiree health obligations, according to a report released Tuesday.

And taxpayers are ultimately on the hook for this shortfall, which soared 26% in one year.

The Great Recession has wreaked havoc on states’ pension and retiree health systems, the Pew Center on the States found. The report covers fiscal year 2009, which began July 1, 2008 in most states.

States are largely responsible for this predicament. As tax revenues plummeted, many skipped part or all of their annual retiree benefits contributions as they struggled to pay for education, Medicaid and other services.

“Far too many states have not responsibly managed the cost of retirement benefits, effectively running up the price for taxpayers,” said Susan Urahn, the Pew Center’s managing director.

States only contributed a total of 64% of the nearly $115 billion their actuaries recommended they put in their retirement benefits accounts for that year, the center said.

The years of underfunding means that states now face a $660 billion gap in their pension accounts.

I apologize for my ability to read and comprehend. Up until I posted my comment I saw no denial of the debt, nor any refusal of the debt. All I saw was idiot statements about the stupidity of the college kids who see the issue far more clearly and expressed it more clearly than you did. All I saw from you and others was resentment of being saddled with the debt, but like dutiful little sheeple you’ll open your wallets and pay. Not one single one of any of you spoke out and said no, no to the debt and no to attempts to make you pay for it. Not one of you even indicated you understood what that debt you think college kids pay for even consists of in the main.

You and I can acquiesce to the idea that we pay for the constitutional things, but for God’s sake stand on your hind legs and deny the other idiot sh.t Congress piles on you.
