Columnist: New Cartoon Brings Muslim ‘Indoctrination’ to Your Kids

Last month, we brought you the story of a Muslim comic book hero who will save the world using his silver wheelchair. That may not have been too controversial. However, the latest attempt to animate Islamic crime-fighters is sparking enough controversy to make up for the former’s relative obscurity.

“Hide your face and grab the kids. Coming soon to a TV in your child’s bedroom is a posse of righteous, Sharia-com pliant Muslim superheroes — including one who fights crime hidden head-to-toe by a burqa.” That’s how New York Post columnist Andrea Peyser introduces “The 99,” a new animated show featuring Islamic superheros set to debut in January on The Hub, formerly Discovery Kids.

In April, President Obama praised the character’s creator Naif al-Mustawa, saying that his “superheroes embody the teachings of the tolerance of Islam”:

So what has Peyser upset if the characters are so “tolerant?” It‘s the comic’s strict adherence to Sharia law, and that fact that “a secular nation” could “endorse a children’s show aimed at pushing one religion,“ that has her sounding the alarm of ”indoctrination.”

“These Islamic butt-kickers are ready to bring truth, justice and indoctrination to impressionable Western minds,” she says, citing the aforementioned burqa requirement (”hair-hiding head scarves are mandatory for five characters, not including burqa babe Batina the Hidden“) and also the cartoon’s refusal to ever show a man and woman together alone.

As more evidence, Peyser points out the cartoon has met the approval of a “Sharia board — which polices Muslim law — affiliated with an Islamic bank from which the show received financing.” And while she fails to mention the board or the bank, she does quote a Times of London columnist who wrote last year that the show’s mission was “to instill old-fashioned Islamic values in Christian, Jewish and atheist children.”

But not everyone is up in arms. Gawker seems to side with the president, and suggests Peyser is overreacting to the not-yet-aired show. “Andrea Peyser has uncovered the latest plot by radical Islamic fascists to brainwash good Christian children into bomb vest-wearing terror robots: a Saturday morning cartoon. With Muslims in it! Isn’t that illegal, here in the USA?”

In August, CNN.com featured a video of Naif Al-Mutawa, a psychologist, explaining the idea behind his comic:

He explains in a subsequent article that his comic is a reaction against a sermon he heard from an imam “railing against the foreign enemies of Islam and the sinners within.”

“It is finally time that all of us became more accountable for that which our children will be hearing,” he writes, “tiny differences setting us apart rather than celebrating those positive things that bind all good people together.”

So what do you think? A show with heroes who happen to be Muslim, and have to adhere to its laws, celebrating similarities instead of differences. Or, an attempt to make Islam appealing to “impressionable Western minds?”

Interesting that they would term the restoration of Spain by it’s own people as “the attackers” when it was islamic invaders who took over part of Spain in the first place. Western christian valuse bad…..islamic invaders good.. Yup, gonna contact Direct TV and ask them to stop carrying the Hub.
I suggest that this channel be blocked in the homes of concerned American parents…not good.

Wouldn’t you just love to see a Christian-based cartoon where sexy Christian heroins (we’ve all seen the way some of them dress for church now, right?) go around trying to indoctrinate Muslim kids in the ways of the western world, and teach them why Sharia law is bad for them? Sorry if that offends anyone, but it would surely test the Muslim’s “tolerance”, now wouldn’t it?

Looks like it has some good production value but I highly doubt that it will last very long on American TV. As always it is up to the Parents to decide if this is something they want thier children watching and so it will not likely have much in the way of ratings. TV being the uber-capaitalist industry that it is I predict it will be gone before stone 7 is found.

“So what do you think? A show with heroes who happen to be Muslim, and have to adhere to its laws, celebrating similarities instead of differences. Or, an attempt to make Islam appealing to “impressionable Western minds?” ” Likely, both.

Personally, it’s fine with me that people of different faiths and colors want to be represented on tv. However, that can go a little bit too far, as well. Take the “blackification” of super heroes in the comics here lately as an example.

Aqualad, the Specter, Firestorm, and Mr. Terrific (among many others) all went from caucasian recently to black. It’s fine if you want to take a new property and make them black or gay or Arab or whatever, but to take an already established character (usually killed off unceremoniously) and then resurrect them as black? That’s unnecessary.

What, only 12% of the population of America is black, right? So, let’s represent that 12%- not make over a third of comic characters black. That’s just silly. And I see this Muslim cartoon the same way. It seems to me more of a matter of appeasement rather than actual representation. Put an Arab on the Avengers, fine. Make the whole team Muslim?! Not so cool.

Likewise, the tradition of all caucasian teams and heroes is also passe. All I ask is that we are fair with regard to representation, and don’t go overboard trying to please one group or the other.

There’s only one problem with your arguement. Any representation of islamists (aka muslims) as being tolerant is a SHAM! Go to any country with a predominance of islamists and you’ll find a country where the women are treated as cattle, tolerance of other religions is NON-EXISTENT and the government rules with an iron fist!
Take that government to it’s logical end…a government ruled by Sharia law, and you have a land where women are regularly beaten (this cartoon show would not be acceptable in Iran or Saudi Arabia as it depicts women associating freely with men not of their own families), women are not allowed to be in public unless being escorted by a male family member, nor can they legally drive a car, own property, or having any claim to their own children in the case of divorce. SHARIA LAW IS SLAVERY!!! And any cartoon show that attempts to display islam as a wise, beneficial, and tolerant religion/government is LYING THROUGH IT’S TEETH! The Discovery Channel should be ashamed for putting this piece of propaganda in our homes!

I think this is silly and way too soon to know one way or the other if it offensive or not. All this is is “us vs. them” on this thread. “Waaaa…. poor me and my religion. I feel threatened by those dirty towel heads!” ALL religion is a SHAM!

And after looking into this a bit more, I think this has been blown WAY out of proportion. It appears to have less to do with religion than even Veggie Tales. It is based on the 99 Virtues/Names of Allah, which are pretty universal to say the least – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Names_of_God_in_the_Qur'an

Other than that, religion is not even discussed. The religion of the characters are never revealed and not all characters are even Arab. Only 4 out of the 50 female characters will even be covered in a hijab and only 1 in a burka. This actually might not turn out to be too terrible…

I will give it a try and reserve my judgment for later, if for no other reason because the cartoon itself looks so freaking cool! ;) After all, re: Veggie Tales… talk about indoctrination!!!

Hmm, you sound like one of those folks who let islamis propaganda in because it sounds so nice and peaceful….and not real at all. I have a grandniece who was telling me about all of these storys about muslim princes, and how they sounded so nice and friendly (she’s 16 years old by the way). I gave her a little bit of the reality of islam and it scared her to hear about the honor killings, the dhimmi status of non-islamics (virtual slavery), and how the women are REALLY treated by their families, husbands and the government….did you know that it takes TWO women to equal a man’s word in any legal proceeding. A womans testimony is worth HALF of a mans in court! Rape is virtually never reported because the woman who was raped is more likely to be jailed than the rapist himself! Care to see your daughter whipped in public for being seen kissing her boyfriend? Perhaps you’d like to see your own wife beaten by the “morality police” for uncovering too much skin?
It may be considered a bit extreme by some to not want ANY depictions of islamists in a false light….but then islam is NOT a kind, caring, peaceful religion…ANYTHING BUT! And I don’t want the kids out there getting a false sense of security around any islamist!

I’m not amazed or shocked at this. The Muslim population will soon infiltrate and become a part of every country in this world, as they are for the most part a young population who will take over the jobs left by the US and other countries retiring populations. We must realize this; it is inevitable. Our county will not become isolationists as we have to stay engage in world affairs to hold our shaky status in this world. I believe everyone worldwide will pay a steep price for this, with internal conflicts and wars in our future. I don’t believe we can shut them out, and will probably be welcoming new workers to our economy in the very near future. The world is changing, and it is going to be a rocky path for a long time to come. God bless us and watch over us in the years ahead. Pray.

Wake up! The TV is the single most powerful and influential apparatus ever used in propaganda, because we, as parents, do not do our job of supervising what our children watch and teach and enforce what we want our children to learn.

The problem is you have all these young men with little or no money for attracting a wife, and these guys many times find outlets for sexual tensions in secret homosexual relationships with friends until they get to a point where they can afford a wife. You don’t hear much about these things, especially in their own countries because after all…would you talk about this sort of thing when you could wind up hanging from a lamppost the next morning???

If so, we need a Christian character cartoon for kids to watch. Unfortunately, when the Christian kids fight the Muslim suicide bombers (that is, a TRUTHFUL cartoon), we‘ll see how well the Muslims like religion being brought to children’s television.

The free market, and freedom of speech, with prayer, should keep us all informed, entertained, and secure.

Slam their advertisers with thousands of complaints non stop, threaten to boycot their products and they will remove it from the air.

This is the most disingenuous, transparent attempt at anti-western, anti-Christian propaganda I have seen since Captain Planet. The adherents of Islam are so wise and so righteous. All those books destroyed. Let’s forget all about the fact that Spain was conquered by the Muslims in order to build that wonderful bastion of wisdom in which the 99 stones were hidden. What I would really like to know is why they never mention the destruction of Library at Alexandria by Amr and the caliph of Omar, or how many books they would now throw into the river, just like those naughty Mongols.

Once again, tolerant to the Sharia law that President Obama and his radicals want to so impose upon the land – in addition to their socialist – marxists ideals.

what crimes are they fighting? Bank robbers? Kidnappers? or Crimes like burning the quran, drawing pictures of mohmmed, being an American? on a side note, Cambridge, MAss schools announced they are closing schools to accomodate Muslim religious holidays– citing that we have jewish and Christian Holiday closures and observance so instead of eliminating those, we have to add new ones to make it fair!! ok, back when Christmas and easter were made holidays, 90 percent of the country was Christian, now, 85 percent majority in this country are still Christians and closing schools for the miniscule percent of the population is Ridiculous!!! in the article, a little girl is deeming shes PUNISHED for missing school on her religious days because she is forced to do MAKE-UP Work — BOO HOO!!! SO what– we cant Change every Law, every public system to accomodate the MINORITy(s)!!! its costly, and unproductive! get over yourselves!!

It’s interesting that the koran is viewed as either a rigid document by some (the bad guys), or a living, breathing document by others (the good guys). Any other historical documents with similar interpretations come to mind? Hmmmm.

Well, looks like Rubberbandangle will be blocking this channel with parental controls tonight!

Simply amazing! What if the Nazi’s (a political party, just as Sharia Law is a political force) had our P.C. type of U.S. government to deal with. They could have just built meeting halls in NY, had cartoons of Nazi superheros, had all the liberals defend them, along with the ACLU for not recognizing their ‘culture’.

This is just getting too nutty.
