Columnist: NYPD Encouraging Drunks to Join Occupiers

It’s no secret that some unsavory and possibly dangerous people have camped out in Zuccotti Park in recent days, but allegations have emerged that the influx of drunk and homeless Occupiers comes from the not-so-gentle hints of NYPD officer involvement.
At least one Daily News columnist has claimed that the NYPD is running a covert campaign of sabotage against the Occupy protest by encouraging a variety of vagrants to set up in Zuccotti park for the free organic cuisine and crash pads. The author, Harry Siegel, wrote accusingly:
“The NYPD seems to have crossed a line in recent days, as the park has taken on a darker tone with unsteady and unstable types suddenly seeming to emerge from the woodwork. Two different drunks I spoke with last week told me they’d been encouraged to “take it to Zuccotti” by officers who’d found them drinking in other parks, and members of the community affairs working group related several similar stories they’d heard while talking with intoxicated or aggressive new arrivals.”
First of all, this begs the question: How can the Occupiers tell the difference between legitimate and illegitimate protestors? And even if they could tell who is most worthy among vagrants– which is dubious– shouldn’t the “99%” include the least fortunate?
It’s as though the Occupiers want to be in control of their property, and reward some protestors for their commitment and labor instead of just giving equally to all.
The NYPD, for its part, is denying any nefarious attempt to send the unwashed masses down to visit the slightly more-washed masses. Even though it would be brilliant counter-messaging to send the most problematic New Yorkers down to the protest, it doesn’t seem necessary.
Everyone in the city knows about Occupy Wall Street, and word of free pizza and a sleeping bags travels fast even without Twitter and Facebook.
While the Occupiers claim the NYPD is cynically disrupting their protest with vagrants and the troubled, they seem to be missing a whole lot of irony in the process.

Posted on October 31, 2011 at 11:36pmWhy should the OWS people be the only ones to enjoy the serene beauty of the park. After all drunks are people too. What about all of the social justice to be had by mingling with the real people? Come on, have some compassion!

Posted on November 1, 2011 at 12:22amThe funny part of the story was this line from Harry Siegel, “The NYPD seems to have crossed a line in recent days, as the park has taken on a darker tone with unsteady and unstable types suddenly seeming to emerge from the woodwork.”
Recent days? DARKER tone? Unsteady and unstable types SUDDENLY seeming to emerg from the woodwork?
Did Harry show up for the first time this afternoon? He doesn’t seem to have paid much attention to this “movement” before now.

Posted on November 1, 2011 at 4:48amCrime, vagrancy, and a year-round tent-city-hippie-fest with free food (for the richest among them)– all brought to you by Brookfield Properties, the private owners of Zucotti Park. What usually happens to private property owners who knowingly allow a crime ridden situation to develop and thrive on their property? And now those in charge have declared they hope to handle rape cases “internally”–actually making them accomplices to violent crime. How is Brookfield getting away with this? At the very least they should have to pay back the city of New York the millions they are forcing them to spend. Am I missing something?

Posted on November 1, 2011 at 6:51amthese morons under the guidance of their handlers want to destroy America by overwhelming the system . Its kind of ironic that the same tactic will work against the OWS protesters by overwhelming their resources with drunks and the homeless . Though it appears hard to discern just who is who?

Posted on November 1, 2011 at 8:09amThese OWS nimrods, in their quest to establish their little Utopian society are finding out that a functional society needs rules, and laws to keep order. The homeless by choice, drunks and criminals are going to take advantage of the gullablity of these fools.

You on the other hand, can’t have what we have worked for here! Keep your hands off our food and sleeping bags! You’re beneath us! Those damn COPS! We hate them, but we need them to remove these people, huh?!!?

Posted on October 31, 2011 at 11:29pmThis may be a little over “user” PSYCHOSIS’s head, and I do apologize if my following comments cause any struggle for comprehension due to a lack of your critical thinking skills; however, it is a sad fact that some of the protester behavior on display, and the more recently reported unwillingness to alert the police to illegal activity, will naturally attract nefarious individuals. And why let a good crisis go to waste? Blame it on the NYPD to detract blame from the movement’s social failures while furthering their agenda of demonizing the police force.

Posted on October 31, 2011 at 11:21pmWow!! If two anonymous drunks said it; it must be true. Great journalism to call out the NYPD based on such reliable sources. I wonder if the story will provoke the OWS crowd in anyway.

Posted on November 1, 2011 at 12:08amThe Occupiers believe that they know how to BEST run this country, so they should consider this a small test of their abilities. I would suggest that all New Yorkers visit the park for their free food, after all, it works better when we spread the wealth around. I also suggest that all New Yorkers remember our feathered friends in this cold weather and please remember to feed the pigeons (the feathered type) at Zuccotti park. I suppose that this might lead to another sanitation problem for the Occupiers but little tests will help them be better rulers. Of course some may suggest that I am just trying to over tax their system to bring it down, to which I say libs are not the only ones that can study Cloward and Piven.

First of all…so not their property.
Secondly, good idea if the police did this. The Occupiers should be all about helping the less fortunate.
At what point in time will this stop?

Posted on November 1, 2011 at 7:26amThis is a small model of what’s happening on a national level. There are some well off people (protesters) offering free food to its group. Others come in to take advantage of (abuse) their generosity.
Just like the influx of illegal immigrants come to take advantage of OUR system of freebies. Schools, health care, even housing subsidies and food stamps.
I’ll bet a majority of these liberals a pro-amnesty, but against giving their stuff away to the drunks in the park. Typical liberal hypocrisy.

Posted on October 31, 2011 at 10:58pmMaybe turn it into a tent city for the unemployed. Give bus tickets to the drunks, drug addicts and the chronically unemployed to NYC. The welfare benefits are great there. No normal person would live in NYC(or Detroit, Chicago, San Fran, LA either) so maybe we should send all the miscreants there so they would be in one place and the Liberals in NYC could take care of them at

That is how Communism began, that is how the Democratic party got their boots on the throat of this free nation (while the elite Republicans watched & didn’t object because they want to be considered part of the elites and hold soirees for their own social agendas), & that is how Hitler sold his AGENDA to the German people!!!

Posted on October 31, 2011 at 10:43pmSocialists and Communists only like handouts when it’s being handed to them, not when they have to hand it to somebody else. There‘s a good reason socialism and communism don’t work. In a system where everyone theoretically gets the same thing regardless of anything then everyone wants to be the recipient of the handouts and nobody wants to actually produce the stuff that’s supposed to get handed out.
