Columnist Suggests Basketball Team be Renamed ‘New York N——s’

Columnist Suggests Basketball Team be Renamed New York N—–sBrooklyn Nets logo.

Phil Mushnik of the New York Post is not too keen on rapper Jay-Z’s newly-branded Brooklyn Nets and he lets his readers know exactly how he feels in his Friday column [emphases added]:

As long as the Nets are allowing Jay-Z to call their marketing shots — what a shock that he chose black and white as the new team colors to stress, as the Nets explained, their new “urban” home — why not have him apply the full Jay-Z treatment?

Why the Brooklyn Nets when they can be the New York N——s? The cheerleaders could be the Brooklyn B—-hes or Hoes. Team logo? A 9 mm with hollow-tip shell casings strewn beneath. Wanna be Jay-Z hip? Then go all the way! [Emphasis added]

Yikes. You know this isn’t going to end well for Mushnik. It wasn’t long before the columnist was being called out for “racially insensitivity.”

“There is so much going wrong at once that it’s a bit overwhelming,’” writes Mediaites Sarah Delvin.

Columnist Suggests Basketball Team be Renamed New York N—–sJay Z wearing the Brooklyn Nets Logo.

“Just…wow. It’s tough to believe that his editors let this slide, as backlash will undoubtedly ensue,” writes the Twitchy team.

“This Phil Mushnick take on Nets/Jay-Z is remarkably ignorant,” Sports Illustrated’s Andy Glockner writes.

Delvin provides further analysis:

…maybe particular attention ought to be paid to the phrase “full Jay-Z treatment.” My first guess about what the “full Jay-Z treatment” might mean regarding the Brooklyn Nets might be something along the lines of “courtside seats and maybe a surprise appearance by Beyoncé,” but that’s a bit of a boring interpretation if the goal is to be as racist and out of touch as humanly possible.

However, as the Twitchy team points out, Mushnik was most likely making tongue in cheek references to actual Jay-Z songs that use the “n-word” (and similar obscenities). Furthermore, the writer is “no stranger to taking aim at rappers in his work,” Chris Littmann of Sporting News writes.

Still, even if his remarks were meant as a joke or a snarky reference to the rapper’s songs, it was a bad, bad idea.

You know there’s going to be backlash over this.

You forget whites are not allowed free speech. A white man cannot stand on stage and make fun of black people or any other “RACE.“ Yet any ”PROTECTED CLASS” of people can make fun of whites without impunity.

Show me one rap or “hip hop”(puke) lyric that isn‘t a retread of something that was already said in the 90’s. Hell, even the late 80′s. This idiot is well into his 40‘s and hasn’t had an original idea in his career. Hey jay-z, WEST SIDE b**ch!! The funny thing is I haven‘t been proud to be from California since the 90’s either.

Well we have completed the double standard.

JayZ can use the N word and call women Ho’s and bitches and is still allowed to own an NBA team.

But, a reporter cannot report on it and make the obvious points.

F me I’m white, I have no rights!

      @InBlack,

You’re wrong. You do have rights. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be held against in you in the court of public opinion. You have the right to apologize for your unfortunate skin colour.

Now, do you understand these rights as they have been written to you?

Wasn’t it JayZ that tried to co-opt the Occupy movement with his own JayZ brand t-shirts?

So now he’s done it again – create a logo/look for the Brooklyn Nets – and cash in. Of course if people don’t like his ideas, they’re obviously raaaaaaacists!

What an horrible way to try to prove a point. Rather than start your argument by mixing gas and matches try a little tact. I think asking if Jay Z is the kind of person you want managing and being the face of a basketball team due to his past and some of the sexist lyrics he has written in the past is a good argument.

Jay Z is a smart man and made a ton of money beause of it, just like Rush. However words have consequences and what you have said publicly(which you did to make money) will come back to haunt you.

You are as classy as ever. You had 0 class yesterday & you have 0 class today.

I have seen and heard of white kids you had many black friends (not just token black friends), listened to black music & were totally involved in black culture. Their black friends will say nword this & nword that. After being steeped in that atmosphere, you know that white kid is going to say the nword.

And then many indignant black racists will go “what did you say?”. To add insult to injury the lily
white race baiters/ will come out of the woodwork & berate the unfortunate kid.

So we know exactly what Mushnik means. He wants to put an end to the double standard of what people can say.

Not buying it. This rapping controversy about the lyrics has gone on for better than 2 decades.

It has been pointed out that more than 1 rapper has had a middle class up bringing. the point is that the language is all affected & not real. It is all for shock value & to make money.

      Jay-A is a fraud.

I see it really hypocritical of the left to defend Jay-Z’s right to be crude, but to get outraged over someone satirizing him.

Yeah, this is totally a nod to Jay-Z’s lyrics. Though the columnist went way too far using that language and should’ve allowed himself the luxury of expressing himself in a much more tolerant and respectful way. I heard Jay-Z, upon holding his new baby girl, promised to never use the B word again in a song. Weird how he never realized ALL baby girls came from a woman’s womb, just like what happened with Beyonce! Duh!
