COLUMBIA, S.C. (The Blaze/AP) — A middle school teacher in South Carolina has been accused of dragging a student under a table during class, telling the boy “this is what the Nazis do to Jews,” police said Monday. While the teacher is claiming the incident was part of a lesson on the Holocaust, others aren’t so sure.
The 12-year-old student said he got up to sharpen a pencil at Bluffton Middle School on Wednesday when Patricia Mulholland grabbed him by his collar and said, “come here, Jew,” police said. The teacher then dragged him 10 feet under a table and made the comment about Nazis, according to police.
The seventh-grade teacher claims she was trying to teach the students a lesson about the Holocaust. The social studies teacher had a lesson on the Holocaust the day before.
“What was a demonstrative attempt to teach about World War II and the Holocaust has been taken to mean an anti-Semitic rant and it was nothing like that,” said her attorney, Robert Ferguson.
Mulholland was arrested and faces charges of third-degree assault and battery and public disorderly conduct, Bluffton Police spokesman Lt. Joe Babkiewicz said.

Ferguson said Mulholland is a well-regarded teacher and hasn’t had any problems during her 23-year career with Beaufort County schools.
“This is such a sensitive topic. But what do you determine is instructive teaching? Where is that line?” Ferguson said.
School district officials said Mulholland was placed on administrative leave Thursday. The district is sharing any information it has with police and will conduct its own investigation once the criminal probe is finished.
Police would not identify the student and refused to say whether he was Jewish.
Bluffton is located along the coast in the southeastern part of the state.

When you start pulling your kids out to home school or private school, this will stop happening. As long as you think “not in my kid’s school,” and give them your kids again, they take that as approval.

Posted on May 1, 2012 at 11:20amI don’t think it is a big deal. The whole bunch of us are just too soft! I doubt very seriously that she hates Jews and was even angry at the kid. Someone stated in a comment that Jews know better than anyone what their history was and wouldn’t need that lesson. That may be true, but what about the non Jews in the class?
I’m not saying it was a good idea. But, was it really that bad? If she singled the kid out because he was Jewish and hates Jews, then yeah it was pretty damn serious. From the information in the story, I don’t think it is that way.

Posted on May 1, 2012 at 8:33amDo we really believe this teacher is a Jew hating psychopath who decided to physically and mentally abuse one of her students, while 20 or so other students were there to witness the act? If the teacher was indeed teaching, the demonstration was an excellent lesson. The horror of Hitler’s socialist Nazi hell cannot and should not be sugar coated. History is repeating itself today and, as in 1930′s Germany, many Americans are totally oblivious to the parallel.

Posted on May 1, 2012 at 10:34amWhen I was a kid, we learned about slavery by acting it out. The teacher instructed us to follow along as she told us the facts and we were to act the whole thing out accordingly. It was a lot of fun! Of course, my very traditional parents raised a few eyebrows and they really didn’t get the educational value of acting out the lesson at all. They criticized the lesson as a waste of time.
Report Post »I imagine the reason the teacher gave no warning was because she wanted her actions to come as a complete surprise, totally unexpected just as they did during the 1930s in Germany. She did this to shock the students, and in doing so, she got a lot more than she bargained for.
Since there is no disciplinary problem that is reported with a student -Jewish or not- rising from his seat to sharpen his pencil, then I can‘t imagine why she’d grab him by the collar saying “come here Jew” and stick him under a desk to punish him though it sounds like her action probably did humiliate him and she could have planned it out better if she‘d asked him ahead of time if he’d help her with a demonstration for the class. That way he’s not just attacked in front of his peers for no reason (though the Nazis truly did that, didn’t they? And they didn’t explain “see here is what Nazis did to Jews” as they persecuted them.) When she starts stuffing students into ovens, then I’ll be concerned. Otherwise, I think 12 is old enough to handle this unless she’s bullied this student in a hostile manner bef

You say “I think 12 is old enough to handle” shows you have no clue about 12 year olds.
Humiliation in front of your peers is the number one fear of a 12 year old. A teacher of 20 some years knows this.
You would teach about past atrocities by being atrocious? What a moron.
“Class, todays subject is the horror of Islamic sexual mutilation. Sally could you please come to the front of the class? Now where did I put those scissors?”
“Todays topic is the Jim Jones Guyana Massacre. Toddah, come here and drink some of this kool-aid. Now Boy!”

Posted on May 1, 2012 at 8:37amYou’re kidding right? You actually think that was appropriate for a middle school student to be singled out and humiliated? Whether she was trying to “teach,” or not, is irrelevant. You obviously do not have teenage children. ANYTHING done to them by a teacher in front of other students is embarrasing and humiliating.

Posted on May 1, 2012 at 10:50amSome people -and kids- are WAY too sensitive. No wonder the students these days are expected to learn everything through boring rote memory, which not every student is good at. Sylvan has discovered different kids excel through different types of lesson plans.
Report Post »At 12 years old, we acted out slavery. Guess what: I was a slave.
I was teased and had to walk the halls with cans tied to my feet (as per my “master’s” requirements) and had to carry his books to class for him. He paid all of $2.50 for me, and he got me for an entire week for that. It was just a demonstration and it was all in good fun. We likened this to Pioneer Day or the Rennaissance Faire that requires some role playing.
This teacher‘s big mistake was not asking the boy’s permisson to use him in her demonstration. She singled him out without warning, and especially if he is Jewish, she shows a lack of good judgment in doing so without his consent. But I swear: kids really need to toughen up a bit or else this kid will probably blow his brains out in high school and leave a note citing this incident of a teacher snagging him by the collar and calling him a “Jew”. Give me my own school days when the only people who got their panties in a bunch over that kind of stuff were my own stuffy parents (which is why I kept them very well protected from most of what I witnessed and experienced on a daily basis in seventh and eight grade). I’m sure the kid then went on to endure real bullying in his gym class.

It was a shock to them in Wisconsin when we took away most of the Union’s powers over us. Than we began implementing policies that allowed us to fire them for being bad teachers. They are still complaining about it but they haven’t seen anything yet, we are going to demand they teach without their political views.

Posted on May 1, 2012 at 8:17amIf this was the day after the Holocaust lesson then it does appear to be inappropriate and racist behavior. If she is found free from that behavior then how about she dragged the kid across the room! This could be the tip of the iceberg with her or not. I am wondering if she has had a 23 year reign of terror and humiliation regarding her students or not. How about some investigative reporting? She will have to explain her behavior to the court now.

I mean, we have systems in place for pedophiles, do we not? Anti-AMERICAN does not need to be in our school systems at any level, that includes universities paid for by tax dollars. IMO

If teachers can be fired like the rest of us then they will keep their anti-american comments in check.

Posted on May 1, 2012 at 8:33amIf her intention was to teach about the Holocaust with a visceral demonstration (role playing) the student needed to be in on it beforehand and had given his/her consent. There is nothing wrong with the teaching model of the military: hear, see, do. In fact, it is probably the best learning model.
It appears from the story, the student was not in on it. This is not a good thing. The teacher went over the top if she was teaching. If not, she is a nutbag.
