Comedian Colbert Seeks ‘Megaphone Made of Cash’ for His ‘Super Pac’

Comedian Colbert Seeks Megaphone Made of Cash for His Super Pac

AP

WASHINGTON (AP) — Comedian Stephen Colbert wants to grab “a megaphone made of cash” so he can shout out the demands of his supporters in next year’s elections.

Political talk isn’t cheap, so he’s setting up a special political committee that will let him raise unlimited gobs of money from corporations, unions and individuals.

When he files the paperwork later Friday at the Federal Election Commission, he’ll also ask for a media exemption that will let him talk about the fundraising on his show, “The Colbert Report,” without violating campaign finance laws.

Colbert, who poses as an ultraconservative on the Comedy Central show, said in March that he was forming a political committee. But that kind of committee has stricter rules both on fundraising and how he could mention it on TV.

TPM:

Colbert said he expected the FEC to take his request seriously.

“I’m making an actual request. I want to find out whether I actually have to list Viacom and the fact that I have a show as a gift in-kind,” Colbert said. “And if I don’t, I can’t wait to use the resources of my show.”

After passing through security to deliver his letter along with his lawyer, Colbert delivered a speech before hundreds of fans gathered outside the FEC building as FBI employees watched from the windows of the J. Edgar Hoover Building across the street.

“As we stand here on this historic site, where 250 years ago today George Washington filed his papers to form his independent expenditures non-connected political action committee, we are also standing at an American crossroads — not to be confused with American Crossroads, the name of Karl Rove‘s ’Super PAC,” Colbert told the crowd. “I mean a metaphorical crossroads, because the Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United has proved that unlimited corporate money equals free speech. But by the transitive property of elections, does it not also follow that no corporate money equals silence?”

“I want to form Colbert Super PAC for all the PAC-less Americans, to give you a voice in the form of my voice,” Colbert said.

You would like to talk about rationality? I take it then that you believe in laws of logic? But where do laws of logic come from in an atheistic universe? Or to put it another way, why ought there to be laws of logic? I believe in laws of logic because they are a reflection of the way God thinks – the rules for correct reasoning. But on an atheistic worldview, why should there be the laws of logic which are:
      1. Immaterial
      2. Universal
      3. Absolute/unchanging.
If you are really the “critical thinker” your chosen title claims, then chew on this; I have a rational basis for rationality, and you do not.
      http://www.answersingenesis.org/articles/aid/v2/n1/atheism-irrational

By the way, I should insist that all persons, especially trolls, would do well to make a study of logic. Especially that ad hominem is not a valid debate tactic. Don‘t know what ’ad hominem’ is? Look it up.

And fellow blazers, don’t lower yourselves to their level. Your views are more rational; so you can use rational arguments; you just might need to do some research. Name-calling is for people who don’t have an argument. Don‘t lower yourselves to the troll’s level.

@LACT….Can you be honest about your self? You need to change your name to Socialist-Athiest-Critical-Thinker. Or is abandoning your illusion to much for you to think about. But then again maybe you have given this some thought and come to the correct conclusion that coming out of the closet as a socialist will change your status from American to enemy within these borders. You are free at this point to park your butt in the nearest socialist country of your choice depending on how they feel about it. But you really dont want to be here when push comes to shove.

      @LA“CT”

Actually, this “thread,” beginning with the post by HSDO, has nothing to do with Colbert, your posts included. Yes, the thread (or sub-thread) is off-topic to the ‘news’ story, but if you’re not honest enough to admit your own posts are no more on-topic than mine, its just the pot calling the kettle black. Then again, as an atheist you have no basis for honesty, or any absolute morals, so your only reason for acting ‘moral’ is that it is convenient or you want people to like you; which are arbitrary reasons and subject to change.

Convenient way of dodging the question, by the way. And no, I am not going to waste my time with the closed-minded people at your forum. My arguments here are more for other’s sake than for the sake of the religiously committed atheist.

Ah, but there’s a difference. I have more productive things to do with my time (which is why there will likely not be more posts from me on this thread).

And you really should no better than to make such a naive statement like “there‘s no evidence for ’absolute morality.’” Are you certain of that? Then you must know everything about everyone everywhere at all times, to state categorically there is no evidence. If I knew you better, I might point out some of your own actions and beliefs as evidence.

But as you don’t believe in absolute morality, I have no reason to believe you’re telling me the truth about anything – after all, why shouldn’t you lie, particularly if it benefits your survival value? So in this case it is pointless to argue with you.

I’m off to do something productive. Have a nice day.

Sir – I didn‘t say there wasn’t an absolute morality – I spoke of evidence for such a thing. I said I don’t know of any EVIDENCE for an absolute morality. Do you have such evidence? If so, then I‘d be happy to consider it’s source. But I personally have never seen evidence for an absolute morality. That’s a factual statement from my experience and investigations.

“But as you don’t believe in absolute morality, I have no reason to believe you’re telling me the truth about anything – after all, why shouldn’t you lie, particularly if it benefits your survival value? So in this case it is pointless to argue with you.”

I didn‘t say I wasn’t moral – I get my morals from the societies the are raised in. You don’t even know me and you are accusing me of not having morals? Is that moral?

“I’m off to do something productive. Have a nice day.”

      The same to you.

P.S – I did not pull this conversation off-topic (Earendil did) , but I need to respond to these accusations.

Colbert has a quicker wit and sharper mental reflexes than anyone I’ve ever seen in an interview setting…..what is so compelling about this is that his full power has yet to be realized; those that attempt to marginalize his intellect are acting out of sheer ignorance, denial, or a combination of both….and that’s a fact.

Karl Rove has a PAC, so does Palin. Both are television personalities. Is there some reason a liberal can’t have a PAC?

      __________

Yes, because all the Left does is complain about PACs and how ‘evil’ they are.

When the Left actually lives up to its sanctimonious holier-than-thou pontifications, they might be at last be taken seriously.

So, no–I don’t allow, in my head, the Left being able to have PACs.

Upstate, I haven’t heard any “sanctimonious holier-than-thou pontifications” but may you can send a link so I can read about that.

UpstateNYConservative says, “So, no–I don’t allow, in my head, the Left being able to have PACs.”

Upstate, I don’t imagine there is much of anything you “allow in your head” and certainly nothing that you don’t already agree with. Your stuck right where you are. Okay, good for you. But the world is moving ahead and leaving you behind.

You said, “I haven’t heard any “sanctimonious holier-than-thou pontifications””

Of course you wouldn’t have heard that, as described. You and the other trolls are making those statements, and would never think anything except that you have it right all the time.

For a bunch of people who claim to not believe in God, you all act so often as if you think you’re Him.

I also find it cute that you claim the world is moving ahead, when you liberals are still stuck in the 19th Century according to Marx. I don’t have to allow you liberals anywhere in my thinking, and that just bugs the sh*t out of you, doesn’t it? I know you’ll never admit with your lips or even in your own head, and that’s okay. An emotional crisis on your part doesn’t constitute a consideration on my part.

You see, I’m not alone in my disregard of the Left. While all your cheap talk and self-righteous bombast might sound good over $10 lattes at the local coffee shop, it carries no weight among the Conservatives here. We have heard it all before, so often from the Left that anything you might opine falls on deaf ears. And I know that kills people like you–to be basically disregarded outside your usual hovels.

Really–you‘ll feel better once you learn you’re not the height of morality.

      Pffft!

That’s what I was thinking. I have a sinking feeling that eventually he will try to tie this all to the Koch Brothers and the money they pass around to different orgs and pacs. The left is trying very hard to keep people from looking at George Soros too closely so they are using the Koch Brothers as their diversionary foils.

As far as I’m concerned, the Koch Brothers are heroes. Unlike George Soros who uses his money to back organizations that would tear down the USA, the Koch Brothers use their money to support the American way of life and American Capitalism. They use their money for good, while Soros uses his for evil.

      @thepatriotdave

The Left is getting concerned, almost fearful, if I dare say.

Last November came as a total shock to them, and they’re still reeling. The other day, at LSU, probably has them worried; Haas was clearly wigged to see 2000 or so people against him when he said that he expected only 60.

Liberals know only one thing, and that’s their playbook. They’ll double down, calling us racists all the more and with greater fervency, as if that’s going to affect anyone except rubber-spined RINOs. Liberals don’t know anything else.

Colbert is about as useful to America as is Chrissy Matthews. In the greater scheme of things, none on the Left are making any kind of dent; they’re changing no minds to their side.

I, personally, find it all comedic. But it’s really sad, if you think about it without a sense of humor.

      _______________

Oh, I‘m not out to change anyone’s mind. Liberals tend to have a mission; I would love some addresses so I can send every troll here a T-shirt with the logo “Something To Prove”.

I come here mainly to learn from fellow Conservatives, and maybe contribute a few things along the way if I can. While I generally disregard the trolls, I find it demented fun to tweak an occasional liberal nose. The only reason a lib could possibly come is to annoy people, whether paid to do it or because they’re so mentally ill or mad at the world that they live for it. On a site like HuffPo, their first attack would get them banned, and they know it. Places like The Blaze are much more forgiving and tolerant, so trolls have a safe haven where they can vent and spew.

Overall, they’re accomplishing nothing here, they’re not persuading a single mind to their side. Maybe they get some kind of cheap thrill being outcasts, then go brag at the coffee shop or something. Among my fellow Conservatives, I’m having a great time! I learn a lot from them.

Even with the trolls, it’s all good!
