Commitment to Personal Responsibility: Beck Asks Americans to Take This Pledge as First Step in New Initiative

Every movement starts with a commitment based on political, religious or cultural catalysts. Sometimes, those commitments might even be based on a combination of the three. On Monday evening, Glenn Beck unveiled the first stage of his highly-anticipated four-part action plan dedicated to reclaiming the country by doing, rather than talking.
Watch below as Beck explains why GBTV is a “verb”:
During the program, Beck explained that during his last broadcast on the Fox News network, he actually already envisioned what GBTV would be like, telling viewers that his new network would become a verb.
Essentially, Beck’s vision for GBTV surpasses that of a simple news network where people are informed, or even entertained. Rather, he seeks to build an actionable movement where viewers are enabled to become part of an active and ongoing process, not merely remain spectators of a particular broadcast. This is because Beck believes that is in fact the viewer who holds the power.
To date, Beck’s company, Mercury Radio Arts, comprises four separate online television programs, two radio broadcasts, ”one of the world’s leading news sites,” theater productions, over a dozen book publications, humanitarian initiatives, and even a new marketplace for entrepreneurs. Thus, slowing down isn’t in the cards for Beck nor his 130 staff members.
As Beck introduced his new four-step plan, he noted that the battle would be uphill, as Progressives have been building their infrastructure and pervading society for 100 years. But just as he voiced concerns over the imposing task at hand, Beck also noted that he has great hope and faith in viewers.
With this in mind, he reviewed the actionable components of his plan. Each are listed below, beginning with the promise to commit.
Commit
At the end of the day, Beck believes it is about what one believes in and what he or she stands for. When the world begins to find itself in the throes of chaos, the majority of people may flee. Others, however, will lead. It is this kind of leadership he asked of viewers.
Invoking the Civil Rights Movement, Beck observed that neither Malcolm X nor Bill Ayers won the the push for equality between whites and members of the black community. Rather, it was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who, through his words and deeds, demanded African Americans be treated as individuals, and more pointedly, be treated as men.
Dr. King prevailed because he operated within a framework of love and respect, and love, according to Beck, always trumps aggression.
Dr. King insisted his followers commit to a higher ethical standard and code of conduct than that of their foes. He made his followers treat everyone — even those who abused, debased and assaulted them — with dignity and respect. That commitment to dignity became the cornerstone of Dr. King’s movement.
While the subject matter may have changed over the years, the crux of how best to deal with the challenges that lie ahead are essentially unchanged. With this in mind, Beck’s promise to commit begins with simple steps that include: understanding what one believes, removing blame from any political debate or discussion and instead focus on a hopeful dialogue, embracing personal responsibility, and finding joy.
Activate
The second phase of Beck’s movement begins with the promise to activate, or mobilize. Beck warned viewers that the upcoming election must be a clear mandate — a message to Washington and more pointedly, to the Left. It cannot be a “close” election.
Beck complimented the Tea Party and The 9-12 Projects as great examples of groups that have mobilized efficiently. On Tuesday, however, he promised to explain one simple step that will help everyone who wishes to participate be equally effective.
Live It
While additional details of this step will be revealed on Wednesday, Beck said that at its core, this step “is all about small government.”
“You say you want it… but you will have to live it.”
Create
The final step in Beck’s four-part plan will be an expansion of the entrepreneurial spirit that has made this country and its citizens the most prosperous the world has ever known. Too often, conservatives, moderates and Libertarians alike hear that they are losing the culture war to the left. While it is true conservatives have trumped liberals in talk radio, and perhaps via the sole center-right-leaning network, Fox News, only the left has managed to capture the country’s heart with music, theater, art and film. This vital component will be explored in greater detail on Thursday.
“We have to be the shining city on the hill,” Beck urged.
The pledge
Since Beck believes personal responsibility is paramount to the movement, he is asking all participants to commit to follow the pledge originally issued by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1963. Dr. King began his “ten commandments” with the words: “I hereby pledge myself—my person and body—to the nonviolent movement.” Beck mirrored this pledge with a version of his own (featured below Dr. King’s). Each of the pledges can be accessed in their entirety on GlennBeck.com.
Dr. Martin Luther King’s Pledge
1. MEDITATE daily on the teachings and life of Jesus.
2. REMEMBER always that the nonviolent movement in Birmingham seeks justice and reconciliation–not victory.
3. WALK AND TALK in the manner of love, for God is love.
4. PRAY daily to be used by God in order that all men might be free.
5. SACRIFICE personal wishes in order that all men might be free.
6. OBSERVE with both friend and foe the ordinary rules of courtesy.
7. SEEK to perform regular service for others and for the world.
8. REFRAIN from violence of fist, tongue, or heart.
9. STRIVE to be in good spiritual and bodily health
10. FOLLOW the directions of the movement and of the captain on a demonstration.
Below, Beck mirrored Dr. King’s model with his own Declaration of Rights and Responsibilities:
Thus, we the people do hereby declare not only our rights, but do now establish this bill of responsibilities.
1. Because I have the right to choose, I recognize that I am accountable to God and have the responsibility to keep the 10 commandments in my own life.
2. Because I have the right to worship as I choose, I have the responsibility to honor the right of others to worship as they see fit.
3. Because I have freedom of speech, I have the responsibility to defend the speech of others, even if I strongly disagree with what they’re saying.
4. Because I have the right to pursue happiness, I have the responsibility to show humility and express gratitude for all the blessings I enjoy and the rights I’ve been given.
5. Because I have the right to honest and good government I will seek out honest and just representatives when possible. If I cannot find one then I accept the responsibility to take that place.
6. Because I have the God given right to liberty, I have the personal responsibility to have the courage to defend others to be secure in their persons, lives and property.
7. Because I have the right to equal justice, I will stand for those who are wrongly accused or unjustly blamed.
8. Because I have the right to knowledge, I will be accountable for myself and my children’s education…to live our lives in such a way that insures the continuation of truth.
9. Because I have the right to pursue my dreams and keep the fruits of my labor, I have the responsibility to feed, protect and shelter my family, the less fortunate, the fatherless, the old and infirm.
10. Because I have a right to the truth, I will not bear false witness nor will I stand idly by as others do.
Joining Beck on the broadcast to discuss Dr. King’s philosophy, was his niece, Alveda:

Posted on June 4, 2012 at 6:13pmGlenn Beck is right about standing together. He is not aligning himself with Martin Luther King but he sees that King stood for what he (king) truely believed. And it was right. King was right about the way the blacks were being treated. Now black, white or pink we must stand together for what we know is right for our country and our belief in God. One man is not going to change things but many men women and childern standing for what they know is right will.

Mr. Beck only gave Dr. King a short reprieve because of his first summer rally where about 85000 people showed up at the Washington Monument a few years ago was on Dr. King’s birthday.

Posted on June 4, 2012 at 6:13pmI love Glenn but I am afraid all of this constant “Lists” and “Planning” is distracting people from the fact that we all need to get prepared for rough times ahead. If you waste all you time and resources on these little plans that they keep coming up with, your family will be dead by the time you realize what happened. No matter how hard you try 700 trillion +/- (most likely a lot more) in derivative losses will destroy every last thing our nation is currently built on. If you cannot feed, cloth, protect, and defend your family, this is all for not. So before starting any 4 step program to save America, start at home and secure your families needs first an foremost. Otherwise what is the point? Who are you leaving this for? When this all collapses, and it will, the President will get blamed. If this is Romney, I fear for what the people with torches and pitch forks will replace him with. So I will never take a “non-violence pledge” cause when the time comes we will all need the ability to defend ourselves. Our word is our honor, so don’t make a pledge you will have to break…

Posted on June 4, 2012 at 6:36pmPray and work toward our political and social goals, but be prepared for all contingencies. Individual and family “readiness” is given… Anyone with a clue following GBTV has bullets, beans and band-aides stocked. The tough part is getting neighbors to prepare, as well as to coordinate a Neighborhood Defense (ND) group. My solution: A simple, one-page flyer for all neighbors, earnestly requesting that they prepare for economic hardship and possible social upheaval, along with a mention of an ND group forming. No political b.s., no fear mongering, just the facts and the risks associated with not planning. I then followed up with selected neighbors, most vets and/or conservatives, to discuss ND options. We now have a small but skilled cadre of ND members consisting of Army and Marine vets, NRA members, hunters and even a few liberal outdoorsy folk! We’ve put together a good ND plan, down to the shifts for the checkpoint/roadblocks, vehicle and personal identification methods, etc. The toughest part is figuring out how to deal with contacts with refugees, law enforcement and military… God help us though these trying times!

I just cannot get around the fact that he turned his back on Ron Paul. Ron Paul has been saying for quite some time now that this crisis is coming, his predictions so far have come true, kinda like Glenns, he also says that we can turn this around if people would change their mindset. He has always said that liberty is worth saving, but the people have to change in the way they are, if you want a welfare state and you want to police the world, then liberty cannot continue. He is right on this. People have changed over the last decade, thinking that it is the governments job to take care of the needy, to police the world and push our way of life on others. What we need is to get back to our Christian roots and start taking care of our own, helping the needy ourselves in our community by giving them legs up. We need to get back to the golden rule.

That said – I don’t think fussing at each other is any way to get things done. I’d much rather look forwards and try to be positive and uplifting then wallow in the muck of angry online debating. I used to do it on digg for a looong time, and it got old and grating -fast-.
Sure, it was fun – but in the end what was I accomplishing? Nothing.
I think Beck is on the right track. If this becomes an actual movement that not only is able to accomplish things, but have it’s members act as independent groups – we just may have something here that could attract many people.
I admire the more passionate libertarians and hardcore constitutionalists for their passion – but they do a horrible job of appealing to the average Joe. You guys come off almost like the Occupy movement – nothing but loud, angry shouters who relish in the fight. You do absolutely have your place and role – I think however that there’s room for the peaceful side of things as well, even with the stakes being as high as they are.
Let’s see what comes out by Thursday. Personally I‘m hoping we’ll be handed either tools, inspiration, or both. I’m tired of sitting around researching and absorbing things, I want to act on a scale where I not only feel like I’m doing something but have -positive- people at my back as well.
Cheers!

Posted on June 4, 2012 at 8:05pmYou think Dr. Paul is going to save the country all by himself. You do realize that the vast majority of your list cannot be accomplished without legislation from the House and the Senate, right? There would be nothing stopping both parties from simply teaming up against him and overriding every single veto. And I can just see both parties doing just that in the name of stopping a do nothing President Ron Paul.
No more undeclared wars? Fine, we declare war. Then the House passes a spending bill, sends it to the Senate. Ron Paul veto’s it. The House and Senate override. Wash, rinse, repeat.
You will not change Washington until we change ourselves. Only when we start electing honorable congressman and honorable presidents can we expect to undo this mess. It will not happen overnight. It will not happen in one election. The “take care of me” mentality is too far entrenched. That must be undone first.
If you don‘t think it’ll take at least a generation, you are delusional. The only thing we can hope to do for now in November is to slow it down. If we don’t slow it down, Obama will put the pedal to the metal and it’ll be over before we can get started.

If you really listen to what you are saying, it is something like, Since we cannot fix it all at once, we should just stick to another progressive, stick our heads in the sand and kick the can down the road to our children and grandchildren.
Do see the futility in that? I am prepared to live a harder life in order for my grandchildren to experience freedom. I am not the type to stick my head in the sand and hope for the best. I am a fighter that will not give in to the establishment by just going along. If Ron Paul can do one thing, it will be putting a huge dent in the military industrial complex. This he can do as Commander and Chief. We, the people, need to do our part by electing Congressmen and women that take their oath to protect and defend the Constitution as seriously as Dr. Paul does. To just do like you say and give the power to another progressive, which Romney has already professed to being, is insanity according to Einstein.

Latter Day Saints revere the Bible.
We studied the New Testament last year. We studied the Ild Testament the year before that. We are studying the Book of Mormon this year. We are among the more Bible literate denominations. We may interpret it differently than you, but that doesn‘t make us a ’cult’.
What exactly is a New Age church?
Report Post »marybethelizabeth
Posted on June 4, 2012 at 7:29pmNew Age churches are churches that preach self-actualization. Practitioners /believers attempt to release the essence of god that is within and by doing so become gods themselves. They generally follow more of an Eastern philosophical tradition.
Any of that sound familiar?
If not… the point is that Christianity is monotheistic and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is not.

Ahhhh, yes. I am familiar with the term ‘new age’ now that you mention it.
I can see based on your belief in the Trinity – at least I believe that’s what you believe – that you would characterize us as non-monotheistic. Since we believe that God and Jesus are two seperate beings, I suppose it is possible to say that we believe in more than one God. I can only say that we worship God the Father through His Son, Jesus Christ.
If a kitten becomes a cat, and a puppy becomes a dog; what do God’s children have the potential to become? It’s not a stretch to believe as we do, as we are to become like Christ and will inherit all that He has.

The question is whether a non believer should be leading a Christian movement.
On the one hand an outsider may be able to provide a fresh perspective (not that Mr. Beck could formulate such thoughts).
But when an outsider starts suggesting or imposing morality on the movement, then that is not acceptable.
If Mr. Romney were to win the Presidency then we really would no longer be a Christian nation, something that President Obama has pointed out more than once. (one of the very few times I’ve ever said that President Obama was right about something).

Although we have dropped away from the church because we did not believe in some things that were written in the Doctrine and Covenants, Their message is still one of love and family. I do not think I could base my vote on such a trivial thing such as a differnt interpretaition of Christs works through our Father. I mean every church in existence has dofferent interpretations, Jehova Witnesses, Seventh Day Adventists, the list goes on. As long as we are not talking about a religion that would institute Sharia Law, and are for our rights coming from our creator and not government, I am OK.
I still am for a Christian in Ron Paul.
“My faith is a deeply private issue to me, and I don’t speak on it in great detail during my speeches because I want to avoid any appearance of exploiting it for political gain. Let me be very clear here: I have accepted Jesus Christ as my personal Savior, and I endeavor every day to follow Him in all I do and in every position I advocate.” – Ron Paul

Posted on June 5, 2012 at 8:10amThis thread puts a very sharp focus on the danger of delusional thought and religion (same thing actually.) The LDS religion, using the same text that the Christian religion uses, decides it has a very different meaning – they, the LDS members, believe that they can become supernatural beings via their membership in the Mormon Church. This is wrong on many different levels and dangerous as well. If scriptures can be “interpreted” and made to mean anything anyone decides they mean, the result can be catastrophic. It gives license to individuals to create all kinds of fantasy and claim that GOD has given it his seal of approval. The LDS Church is engaged in exactly that, and its delusional adherent Glenn Beck is using it to rally people to his imaginary cause. This would be hilariously amusing if it didn’t have so much potential for disaster. Beck continues to sell fear, division, paranoia and hatred while claiming his actions are protected and directed by GOD himself. It‘s wrong and it’s dangerous.

I’m sorry you are disheartened with Glenn, but I am not.

By Robert Winkler Burke
Book #9 of In That Day Teachings
5/18/12 http://www.inthatdayteachings.com
God gave to us first,
In His abiding, infinite wisdom,
Himself: un-besmirched,
And then second: His kingdom.
This is a thing actually so big,
It’s very much like not seeing the forest for the trees!
It will take minds out of brig,
So leaders can stop paying their endless-loop fees!
Lawless leaders can’t save us,
From lawless masters! (Listening, GB?)
Lawless pastors can’t bless us,
When they’re disasters! (Wrong, you be!)
There’s one God above us all,
And one universal philosophy of Western Civil Society,
All else thought brings a cabal,
Uncorrectable Aristocrats enslaving sheep thru impiety.
Sub-learned Aristocratic politicians and clerics,
Are mankind’s eternal bane,
Ever at war with Natural Law and God’s merits,
Our fight’s always the same.
Because our political or cleric leaders brilliantly want,
To say they see what’s wrong with another camp!
When neither would Western Self-Correction vaunt,
They demand their agendas: sheep rubber stamp!
Government supremacists and religious supremacists: inane,
Report Post »Inimical to freedom, have missed the mark!
The howling failures of these non-exceptionalists are lame,
Aristocrats hate the West’s correction spark!

Posted on June 5, 2012 at 8:18amLloyd Drako, you have said it well. The Emperor has no clothes. Beck is a huckster, exactly as leading conservative Andrew Breitbart stated last December. The fact that so many former Beck listeners (I was among the first over 32 months ago) are beginning to realize this is encouraging. His latest gimmick (reminds me of how scripts are written for Pro wrestling) is obviously designed to help market his rally in July, just as the Israel trip was designed to launch GBTV. Glenneth has a base of wealthy Mormons that support him and he hopes to attract Evangelicals as well, which he seems to be doing. However, his core audience consists of white men over 65 who didn’t finish college according to http://www.alexa.com, so he has a way to go to get the prime spending demographic. At any rate, you have realized the truth. Glenn Beck has created an Amway-style business except he sells fear instead of soap.

Right you both are.
For months I‘ve posted cogent material pointing out Beck’s Way-of-The-Persona… is not going to pull the American religious or political culture out of, well, Mirror-Image-Way-of-The-Persona!
If Beck were to happen upon, oh say, In That Day Teachings… and actually learn SOMETHING NEW… He‘d understand ugly can’t cast out ugly.
The American religious and political culture uses Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) on itself. It is a) stage hypnotism, b) showmanship, c) misdirection and d) suggestion (BuyMyBook!)…
Since Glenn Beck unabashedly uses many elements of NLP to make-rube his internet, radio and TV audience… he ignores posts from me, you similar posit-bloggers, and perhaps God Himself. (i.e. intelligence UNWELCOME!)
Since Beck broadcasts diode-only, while criticizing the Main Stream Media for broadcasting diode-only, and NEVER TAKES a WHIT of correction, how can GB unblind whom he blinds?
Glenn Beck gives every appearance that to recognize any cogent dialogue on his The Blaze comment forum, would be to stoop far, far, far beneath him.
In this, he is a PERFECT MIRROR IMAGE of whom he tells his sheep to protest against.
Gratefully, these posts are allowed.
But GB, the PERSONA, doesn’t allow himself to stoop so low as to receive correction from his audience trying to help him not implode…. as he will, since he continues to deign himself uncorrectable.

Stop being lazy……..Yes some media sources can be outright ignored because they bring nothing useful to the table. But you have to look at all the angles being presented and pick them apart….
Glenn’s lean is different than everyone else (which is why i find his to be the most interesting) If you take what he says and look at it through the lens of “we need to be a moral people, if we are to be a free people” then you will get him. I happen to totally agree with that philosophy, but i do think Glenn’s brand of media does leave out some important stuff…that does not make the stories that ARE reported are not important….

“Income and housing were the main goals of the Poor People’s Campaign. The campaign would help the poor by dramatizing their needs, uniting all races under the commonality of hardship and presenting a plan to start to a solution. Under the ‘economic bill of rights,‘ the Poor People’s Campaign asked for the federal government to prioritize helping the poor with a $30 billion anti-poverty package that included a commitment to full employment, a guaranteed annual income measure and more low-income housing. The Poor People’s Campaign was part of the second phase of the civil rights movement.”
