Complaint That Removed PA Nativity Sent From 33-Year-Old ‘Supernatural Junkie’

What kind of person wants to ban a 57-year-old Christmas tradition?
As we reported, a Christmas nativity scene that has been displayed at the Canonsburg, Penn., Burough building every winter season for the past 57 years is being removed after one citizen wrote to city officials to complain. According to Canonsburg Borough Manager Terry Hazlett, the citizen was upset because the creche was “disrespectful” to residents who aren’t Christian and should not be displayed on public property.
“When you have separation of church and state, you don’t have much choice,” Hazlett told the local ABC News affiliate.
The complaint was sent from 33-year-old Megan Hartley. In today’s increasingly cyber world, it’s not too hard to find out more information about who Ms. Hartley is and to conjecture about her motives behind the complaint.
Hartley is a college grad, single mom and a fiction writer who especially enjoys dabbling in the supernatural, including a seemingly unhealthy fascination with demons, vampires and gore. In one of her short stories posted online, Hartley describes the point of view from a demon in Hell by describing the mutilation of a human:
It all starts with just small proficient incisions. Then inch by inch tearing away the skin, slowly and deftly ripping away flesh and letting it flutter to your feet. The delicate skin rips easily so being able to detach it in one piece takes practice but practice I’ve had. The inner arm, the inner thigh, the eyelids, the genitals, I can remove them all without a single tear. Thicker skin like the bottoms of feet are tricky in their own right, they want to crumble and fall apart. There really isn’t much to be done about that. The rest of the body is easy; all you have to do is cut the outline of what you want to remove and then peel. I suggest small segments, it makes the process last longer. But before you know it you have finished with the first layer. The first layer takes the most skill, the most dexterity. After that it is all simple carving of the meat and organs. When you get down to the bones there is little left you can do with a knife but shear them. If you put a little muscle into it you can work the body down until there is nothing left. It is just remnants at your feet waiting to be made whole again so that you can start over… maybe this time with fire.
Hartley has also entered and won video contests, including an award for “Darkest Video” from the “Damned in Darkness Awards.”
Since the nativity story broke, Hartley has taken to her online blog to celebrate getting the religious creche banned. In a post titled, “I made the news…”, she wrote:
Every year for the past six years I sent a letter to the Borough asking for the removal of the Nativity from in front of the Borough building. This year I found out who I should be addressing the letter to and got action, much to my surprise.
Well the Nativity is up but it is on private property. But it has caused quite the stir. I even got interviewed by the local news though they ended up not showing me on TV.
What kills me is that Christians seem to think that I’ve trampled on their rights somehow.
Hartley has reportedly received a number of negative emails since the local news media reported the story, but she stands by her assertion that the nativity scene was inappropriately displayed.
“I’m standing up for my rights and for the rights of others,” Hartley told WPXI Pittsburgh, “and if that ruins something for someone else I think they are looking too far into it.”

Posted on December 8, 2010 at 9:43amActually BendItLikeBeck, the First Amendment only states that “Congress shall MAKE NO LAW respecting an ESTABLISHMENT of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…” This was because of the King of England also being the head of the Anglican Church in the times of Henry VIII. Last time I checked, Congress has NEVER even tried to introduce a bill or tried to create a law to do this. If you don’t believe in God, that’s fine, that’s your right and I respect that. Just don’t cry about it and claim some intellectual higher ground (when there isn’t one, it’s just your opinion) when others choose to display their faith. Christians have rights too and some of us are tired of people like you claiming this country was never founded on Christian principles. Maybe if you did your research, maybe even take a class, you would learn how Chrisitanity has been a part of this country from before the official founding of the United States until today.
No one ever said our founders were the perfect examples of piety. However, Christians fled England and elsewhere because of religious persecution as well as the political persecution. Humans are inherently flawed. Everyone knows this and Christians, like many other religious faiths, try to better themselves daily. In our case, we rely on the Bible and the Word of God. You don’t accept it. Fine, we get it. But people like you forget we have rights too. People have the freedom of speech and freedom of religion. However, NO ONE has a right to NOT BE OFFENDED.
Not all Conservatives have publicly espoused Christian ideals, let alone those of other religious faiths. When you listen to the actual politicians, you don’t hear much of it.
So, lay off people that want to display the Nativity. And you have the right to say what you want, no matter how stupid or ignorant, but don’t call Christianity an “ignorant, evil mythology” when you obviously don’t know anything about it and when you are completely ignorant of Christianity.
And remember, God still loves you….

Since this lady finds a nativity scene offensive, I would not find it hard to believe that many people here would find much content on her blog offensive. If you do, you should report it to Live Journal so they can have the opportunity to take action. Perhaps, this lady might reconsider her “right to not be offended.”

When some government official forces you to swear eternal fidelity to Jesus Christ in order to vote or get a driver’s license, that would be establishment of a state religion. When that happens give me a call and I’l be first in line to fight, Until then shut the hell up and go home

Posted on December 8, 2010 at 7:00amBendit, you and anyone else can worship whatever god you want, or no god at all, this christmas, and dispay your faith. While I would call worshiping false gods foolish, it is your right to do. I do have one question for you, and anyone else who does’nt believe for that matter. What have I, and others like me that believe in Jesus, lost when that inevitable day of death comes, and one day it will. You may say that we lose our freedom, but I am more free now than I was as a sinner, worrying from day to day, or worse, ignorantly believing that everything was ok, when nothing was. Now Christ is at the helm and I know that wherever I go I can trust Him to lead me straight. No, we have lost nothing, only gained in love and charity and fellowship, if we are wrong. But, what if your wrong, what have you lost. It becomes unerringly clear that if we are telling the truth, when you die, you will lose everything.

Posted on December 8, 2010 at 2:12pmSo true! If we are wrong, when we die we won’t even know it – but we will have lived a happier, more fulfilled life because of our faith in God. But if atheists are wrong, when they die they will surely know they were wrong and will have all of eternity to regret their misspent lives.

Posted on December 8, 2010 at 6:02amSome people would tell you that humans have developed moral values to maintain order in society. That we as thinking animals have evolved to a higher standard, and there is a logical reason for our actions. However as proven by every other species on the planet this would be incorrect. Why are we the only species to have remorse for killing even out of necessity. Humans have no long term personal benifit for law regarding others. If God does not exsist then there is no reason for me to worry about my conduct towards others. In other words, without God there would be no point for life at all, except for personal satisfaction. Helping fellow man would not ever enter our minds.
Report Post »I understand why many question God in any form. Having faith, in the end leads you to a point where you have to realize that your existance on this earth may have nothing to do with you. Some may suffer thier entire lives so that in the end they had a positive impact on anothers. In the grand scheme of life, we all play a very small part. Its a very difficult concept to wrap your head around, and some people decide not to try, because of pride, or because its not logical to come to this conclusion. I know I will never fully understand the secrets of the universe. I will never be able to understand why life isn’t fair, and so many good people suffer, and so called bad people seem to float through life with so many riches. In the end though, I realize that I don’t need to understand everything, as it simply isn’t my place to do.
“A man that only has faith in himself, will never witness the greatness of others.”
Its everyones right in the country to question, or to conduct their lives the way they see fit. However that never meant taking things from the thousands of others that saw life differently.

Posted on December 8, 2010 at 4:51amThis country has gone downhill so far, so fast that my head is actually spinning. I remember a time when tolerance meant that if you didn’t agree with something that was in no way hurting you, you just turned the other cheek or a deaf ear on it. Now it seems if you don’t agree with ANYTHING in the mainstream you just complain once and it is gone forever. These people need to get over themselves, I don‘t give a damn what you do or don’t do in your personal life why should you care what I do in mine? If you are taking care of your own business you really shouldn’t have time to worry about what someone else is doing.

Let’s take a look at the First Amendment shall we: “CONGRESS shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;”
CONGRESS! The legislative branch of the United States Government. They cannot pass a law forcing people to worship a specific religion. What does the Nativity Scene have to do with limiting the laws Congress can pass?
Look, the Founding Father created the First Amendment because they didn‘t want another ’Church of England’. The First Amendment was to keep Government out of Religion, not to keep faith-based principles out of Government.

What about in the sense of the Holy Trinity? The Father (Executive), The Son (Judicial), Holy Spirit (Legislative). What about in the fact that the vast majority of our founders were very devout Christians but realized that not everyone will view God the exact same way as them (tolerance) but assumed that everyone would at least believe in God (as it is very hard not to when you are educated about the world around you) so they used the term Creator right in our documents. What about in the sense that while the federal government (God..if you will) gives ultimate control to the States (the People) as they know best how to decide the direction of their own lives. If those decisions lead them into failure, at least they don’t bring everyone down with them, but maintain the right of Free Will.
You’re right, there is no sense on which we were founded on Christianity.

The only way this creche would have been unconstitutional is if the local government enacted an ordinance/law that all citizens must be Christian and had the creche up as support of the ordinance/law. I submit that by taking down the creche they are violating Amendment I by prohibiting the free exercise of religion.
