‘Compulsory Abortion’ and No ‘References to Size, Power and Sexual Potency’ in Auto Ads: Obama Adviser’s Words Come Back to Haunt Him

John P. Holdren, whose list of titles in the Obama administration is so long that he’s only known informally as the “Science czar,” has some interesting ideas about the future of America’s economy. Or as critics may say, about how he wants to control America’s economy. Specifically, a 1973 book that Holdren coauthored with famed environmentalists Anne and Paul Ehrlich is coming back to haunt him with some of its more bizarre ideas about everything from abortion to advertising in the automotive industry.

A little context: Holdren’s coauthors, Paul and Anne Ehrlich, are both responsible for the alarmist 1968 tome The Population Bomb, which argued that overpopulation would become such a pressing concern that huge numbers of people would starve to death in the 1970′s alone. In the years since, the book has been roundly panned for being too alarmist. However, that did not stop Holdren from coauthoring two follow-up books, one entitled Human Ecology: Problems and Solutions from 1973, and the other entitled Ecoscience: Population, Resources and Environment, in 1977. Though it is impossible to know which parts of the books Holdren himself is responsible for, one is fairly safe in assuming he agreed with most (if not all) of what was in them.

And what was in them? Here are some representative quotes from Ecoscience:

Indeed, it has been concluded that compulsory population-control laws, even including laws requiring compulsory abortion, could be sustained under the existing Constitution if the population crisis became sufficiently severe to endanger the society.

One way to carry out this disapproval might be to insist that all illegitimate babies be put up for adoption—especially those born to minors, who generally are not capable of caring properly for a child alone. If a single mother really wished to keep her baby, she might be obliged to go through adoption proceedings and demonstrate her ability to support and care for it. Adoption proceedings probably should remain more difficult for single people than for married couples, in recognition of the relative difficulty of raising children alone. It would even be possible to require pregnant single women to marry or have abortions, perhaps as an alternative to placement for adoption, depending on the society.

And this, from Human Ecology (emphasis added):

Advertising now functions in large part to keep the economy growing by creating demand for a wide variety of often useless, dangerous or environmentally destructive products. Its most dangerous abuses might be halted immediately by legislative action. For instance, it could be made illegal for any utility to advertise in such a way as to promote greater demand for power. Also, references to size, power or sexual potency (direct or implied) could be banned from automobile advertising.

In many readers’ minds, this may raise an interesting question: Could the Chevy Volt have survived in an economy where references to size, power or sexual potency were banned from automobile advertising? This, however, is not all the book says. CNS News has more:

“Worldwide population limitation must be accompanied by other major changes if present trends are to be reversed and the already awesome burden of human misery is to be kept from increasing,” they wrote. “The most urgent of the needed changes is a series of moves to close rapidly the widening gap between the rich and the poor nations.” [...]

In their chapter entitled, “Changing Human Behavior: Toward the Environment and Toward Our Fellow Man,” Holdren and the Ehrlichs pointed to economist Kenneth Boulding as the founding father of the “spaceman economy” idea. Boulding had published an essay in 1966 entitled, “The Economics of the Coming Spaceship Earth.”

“Boulding has described a rational alternative to the GNP-oriented economy, calling this alternative the ‘spaceman economy’ in harmony with the emerging concept of ‘Spaceship Earth,’” wrote Holdren and the Ehrlichs in Human Ecology.

      Has he done anything respectable at all? Has he ever come back and corrected himself?
      (Although anyone who goes so far as to PUBLISH such ideas is probably too far gone.)

      The government shouldn’t force abortions. There should be a program to offer incentives for voluntary abortions and sterilizations. The social and biological undesirables should be given a plastic identify card.

      When they show up for an abortion or sterilization, they will be able to choose from a list of items such as: Vintage Air Jordans, Apple Smart Phone, Apple IPAD, Glock, etc. For the serious bitter-clingers, they could offer an AR15 semi-automatic assault rifle or Mossberg 20-gauge pump action shotgun.

      These offers would not be available to registered Democrats.

      Well, if we are paying the women to cover their contraceptives, wouldn’t that make them hookers (or at least hookers when it came time to argue for the legality of this, and then not hookers when they are fishing for votes, kind of like the tax/not tax status of Obamascare)? Therefore they would be covered under the commerce clause. As Obamascare already demonstrates, tey are willing to force a product on everyone whther they want it or not. Birth control would be no different.

I was reminded of many of your points when I heard a story about some African orphans. They were converted in Africa by missionaries, then came to America to stay with host families. When they came and saw OUR YOUTH arguing over the newest XBox and who had it and who didn’t, these African orphans FELT SORRY FOR OUR YOUTH. They weren’t sure if OUR YOUTH were TRULY SAVED.       The Netherlands now has a “Euthanasia Van” that can pick up grannie and drop off her remains at a crematorium. Since there is really no ethical difference between killing a newborn and a late-term abortion, a 90-day return policy should be allowed on newborns. If the mother has second thoughts about her newborn, call an 800 number and schedule a Euthanasia Van pickup.

      Tom, I work at a university. The dirty little secret is that PhD.s are no smarter than most other people. They just went to school for 10 years to become specialists in a single narrow field, which many of them then use to pretend they are geniuses about everything. I would bet solid cash that my mechanic father is smarter than 3/4ths of the people I work with. You’d be amazed at how many of them cannot unjam a copy machine or printer, or turn on and off the classroom computer equipment correctly.

      I knew one, moved to Mt. from Rd Island. He & his militant buddies were always making the local news. Came into my place of work and handed a paper to my boss to arrest “his body” because of taxation issues…another time, one of his buddies sat in the office and talked about that there was going to be something big that was going to happen….5 months later, Oklahoma City bombing. I stood toe-to-toe with acouple of them and stated my views AND DID NOT BLINK(I lived & survived a violent dad) and they blinked. I am in another city now after retiring, but do know those radicals are still in that area & in the western part of Mt..The Crap that comes out of their mouths is unbelieveable but they believe it! Same & type of language that this man spews out his mouth! We have some very dangerous people in this administration. Wake-up America…we are being taken over by radicals!

      An odd thing happened during the last election process. I woke up to what was happening the winter before the election, and it was like God was snapping His fingers and saying “it is time, pay attention”. Then, everywhere I looked, I kept seeing prophecy being fulfilled in things happening, and what people were saying.

      But I find it so odd, and truly can’t understand how liberal family and friends became even more hardened to truth at that time, and more certain that these guys trying to steel our nation were the ones that would save it. The divide continues to astound me, as logic and truth have less and less foothold with those who are asleep.

      But the good thing is that so many others are wide awake. Not only are we not alone as people, but we know that we are not alone in Christ. We need not fear- though I have to remind myself of that by holding very tightly to what I know. And I know that we can trust the Lord while we attempt to reach others with the love that they so desperately need. I am praying for revival.

      MOMRULES, even if he does go quietly away, it won’t matter. We’ll get a new body in there, but it will be someone vetted by the power elites and under their control, just like he is. That is what they have in mind for us, and it’s already begun.

      Well, on the upside, if we had implemented this idea 50 years ago, Obama‘s mother would have lost custody of him when she and Barack senior divorced and maybe he wouldn’t have been raised by a communist mother. Possibly he would not be such an extremist?

    Like most of the Obama administration… This guy is unAmerican and a complete nut job. But like Van Jones the self proclaimed communist and Eric Holder his racist attorney general, those are the type of people he is most comfortable around. They are a good fit to fundamentally tranform our Country.

      I think you should add “rational” to the list after noticing that the plan included a “rational alternative” to the GNP economy. I don’t think we do GNP anymore, it is GDP, but either way, a shunning of rationality with respect to the economy only blinds us to disaster and makes bubbles in the economy more difficult to notice until it is too late. The word “alternative” is quickly coming to mean, “something that does not work.” Sustainability requires a rational calculation, not one based on hope and change. Social Security, Medicare, Obama Care are not sustainable and two out of three were sending out warnings as early as the Carter Administration. When Jimmy Carter “fixed” Social Security by placing an escalating table of SSI tax increases, it was a poison pill for our manufacturing industries and began the long decline of our manufacturing jobs in the USA. Generally, anything you tax, you get less of it. The more you tax labor, the more incentive to get rid of labor. What killed the manufacturing sector and now infects the banking and retail sector to a lesser degree was the greed of the government and its determination to fix our depravity no matter how they had to redefine it.
