On December 3, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice gave CBS’s Katie Couric a much-needed lesson on why America invaded Iraq.
When Couric said to her guest during an “HBO History Makers Series” interview, “Documentaries have been made about how intelligence was incorrectly analyzed and cherry-picked to build an argument for war, and memos from that time do suggest that officials knew there was a small chance of actually finding weapons of mass destruction in Iraq,” Rice stopped the host dead in her tracks

Posted on December 12, 2010 at 4:20pmIf Condoleeza Rice were a white woman and had the exact same exhange with Couric, Couric would have become more aggressive and antagonistic. White liberals will invariably become more deferential to Black opponents who are intelligent and articulate when they push back. Their racist world view renders them ill prepared to debate intellectual minorities who are knowledgeable of the issues. It was amusing to observe.

Some, like Couric, wish to argue just for the sake of arguing….

Posted on December 12, 2010 at 4:16pmThe Iraq war was uncalled for and ILLEGAL. It also diverted attention from your “War on Terror”. That’s why Bin Laden is still free. If US attention had not been diverted from Afghanistan, the original goals for that war would probably have been achieved a long time ago.
Stop living in a dream world. There was no reason for the US invade Iraq. It was expensive monetarily and sacrificed many young American lives for no go reason.

Truth?? Really?! Truth? You’re going to site these outlets: BBC, France24, Der Spiegel, The Guardian, and Al Jazeera as your truth? C’mon! seriously! They are as bad as MSNBC & CNN…
You may want to check history and look at the real truth- the war WAS sanctioned (by Congress AND the U.N. (although THAT actually doesn’t mean much…)). The prevailing view was that Saddam did indeed have WMD‘s and the long term look was that we absolutely could NOT have both Iraq and Iran with WMD’s pointed at each other and everyone else they hated! We had more of a beef with Iraq and he had consistently violated sanctions and would not submit to inspections from U.N. It was time to get a handle on him and quick. I do agree with you on one point- we did spread ourselves too thin- the rest of the world failed to live up to their end of the bargain- something I hope we remember when they all cry for help!
History proves Bush & company got it right- We can second guess the WMD’s (I still say they are in Syria & Pakistan)- but the Middle East is a better place with him gone- though I still wouldn’t vacation there anytime soon.
PS- watch the clip- you’ll learn something!

Posted on December 13, 2010 at 2:10pmmaybe if we stopped intervening in foreign affairs and wars so often we wouldn’t have had a Saddam Hussein with WMDs. We were the ones supporting him in the Iraq vs Iran war. We were the ones arming him and training them against Iran.
Can you blame Iraqi for hating the big govt approach America has shown them? They want to be free just like you and me. BUT they didn’t choose this war. We chose our Revolution, they didn’t, we forced it upon them. These are the lessons we must learn as a country. No country will ever become “free” because we tell them to. They have to desire it and make it a fight that they want. Just as we did in our own fight for freedom.
Same goes for Al-queda in the 80s with Afganistan and Russia. We trained Al-queda and funded them to fight a proxy war against Russia. But we just look the other way. Now that intervention has caused problems. Problems that neo-cons insist are for the reasons of constant conflict and nation building.
This is a neverending cycle unless we break it and start to look at the root of the problem, not the problem itself.

Posted on December 13, 2010 at 6:17pmTired…you really are confused aren’t you? In 2002 UN inspectors were allowed back into Iraq, and what did they find? They found that Saddam had a dozen empty checmial war heads and 2 missiles that were in violation of the UN because they could reach ISRAEL! The UN demanded they be destroyed, Saddam thought he could jerk us around and not comply, it wasn’t until 2 weeks before we dropped “bombs over Baghdad” that Saddam destroyed those 2 missiles out of pure fear. Oh, and both the house and senate authorized an attack on Iraq…by landslide victories! The UN inspectors also declared that Iraq was not taking the demand of disarmament seriously, Saddam was essentially laughing at the council. So in one hand we have Saddam who hates the US and Israel who has empty chemical warheads and has 2 missiles that could reach and take out Israel, who lets UN inspectors in in a limited capacity at his mercy who are only allowed to do their job in a diminished capacity bc of the restrictions Saddam has imposed, there’s mass graves full of dead Iraqis, massive Kuwaiti casualties from the last time he used WMDs on them…and on the other hand we have a strong US president who isn’t going to let Saddam ever touch Israel or kill any more people in a mass unjust fashion.
What more do you want? Did you need a filled chemical warhead, did you want one of the Al Samoud missiles that can reach Israel to actually be used first? Only then after massive casualties you would find it appropriate to enter Iraq with force? Give me a break. People like you are cruel and the fact that you need more deaths and mass graves before acting speaks volumes of your character.

Posted on December 13, 2010 at 4:47pmThe lies never end. Her first statement, that no inspections had occurred in “years” is factually incorrect. The UN inspectors had been in there inside of one year. All ofthe leaders of these inspections did not believe that Iraq had and active WMD program. Ritter, the senior US member on the team, insisted up until the invasion that there was no active WMD program. Notice how Rice waffles between active WMD program and risk that a future program could occur. This is silly, because you cannot every country that could in the future develop a WMD program that the US doesn’t like, and even they had never tried to argue this position before the invasion. They knew that you couldn’t get Congressional or international buy-in for this. History will judge Miss Rice badly, so her defensiveness is understandable, but she is not entitled to revise the facts like this. It is also revealing that she will not “engage in hypotheticals” since that would require her to admit that the threat of WMDs was necessary for building a consensus domestically and internationally for preemptive war. Future hypotheticals are fruitless, but ones concerning the past merely reveal historical truth, so to avoid these means that she wishes to hide or restate the truth. Shame on Rice!!

Had the cowards of the world (sometimes called the “French”) raised some sort of objection, Hitler would not have become the most loved leader in the 20th century with 98% of the vote in the next election. Which would have probably overted WWII.” She could have even brought up appeasement under Chamberlain. (German Generals were willing to ignore this call for war, and instead kill Hitler. They even let the English know they would do this.) This would have sufficed to illistrate the point how multiple counts of inaction (AKA cowardice) caused WWII when common sense could have saved millions of lives.
Heck, I believe that had it not been for the “Oil for food” scandal, Saddam Hussein may have taken the UN security council resolutions seriously (the vote for Iraq to start honoring the peace agreement or there would be “serious consequences”, aka war). Since the French are on the UN security council, and they have veto rights, which means war is out of the question to cover up their own corruption.
I hate the French. Especially De Gaulle.

Plagiarism. Pure and simple. Katie’s never had an original idea in her life.

Posted on December 13, 2010 at 8:02amAll arguments are moot. The US invaded this sovereign nation without a constitutionally mandated “Congressional Declaration of War.” There could be no declaration because the military action was without provocation or true substance. Give the power to the Executive branch and watch the show and their stocks grow.

Wrong. The Constitution does not define how Congress ‘declares’ war. The resolution Congress passed giving the President the authority to use force to effect ‘regime change’, therefore, counts.

Posted on December 13, 2010 at 10:11am@ SPURJIMMY….You are correct that it takes a Declaration fo War from Congress and not the President. Most people out there have no idea of that fact and also the fact that the last true war we were ever in was WW II. Congress has never, let me repeat, NEVER declared war on anyone since that time. We, the US, have been fighting under NATO in every single conflict we have been drawn into. Congress is too worried about maintaining its individual niches in Washington to read and understand the Constitution and implement it as it was written. God help us. I choose VICTORY!

Posted on December 13, 2010 at 11:11amWhile I think Katie is an attractive woman, I think that she is doing what reporters/interviewers should do to an interview. She is attempting to have the person answer questions based on the opposition. How else are you going to find out how someone truly thinks or defends their ideas? I truly do not think Katie is getting a fair shake. While she may be a liberal, she also is attempting to do her job as it is supposed to be done. Now, where I would agree with the people who think she is biased is if she sends softballs to the people who have opposed the Invasion of Iraq from the beginning and does not attempt to change the context of what happened. Either way, she asked questions in such a way that it made Ms. Rice answer the questions in a logical way. That is what reporters are supposed to do is bring both sides to the report. Katy brought the left side, and Condi brought the right side.
