‘Confused’ Oakland Police Slam Mayor’s Handling of Occupy Protests, ‘Strike’

If protesting for weeks on end were not enough, Occupy Oakland is now organizing a general strike to “liberate Oakland and shut down the 1%” — and sadly, Mayor Jean Quan seems to be on board. The City of Oakland has advised all businesses to “leave the cash drawer empty and open after business hours” and has even given all city employees off — except the police that is.
The understandably confounded Oakland Police Officers Association posted the following open letter to Quan on their site, questioning why the city plans to beef up its police presence at strike-related events while giving other city workers an opportunity to participate in the strikes themselves.
“Is it the City’s intention to have City employees on both sides of a skirmish line?” the letter said.
On Tuesday, October 25th, we were ordered by Mayor Quan to clear out the encampments at Frank Ogawa Plaza and to keep protesters out of the Plaza. We performed the job that the Mayor’s Administration asked us to do, being fully aware that past protests in Oakland have resulted in rioting, violence and destruction of property.
Then, on Wednesday, October 26th, the Mayor allowed protesters back in – to camp out at the very place they were evacuated from the day before.
To add to the confusion, the Administration issued a memo on Friday, October 28th to all City workers in support of the “Stop Work” strike scheduled for Wednesday, giving all employees, except for police officers, permission to take the day off.
That’s hundreds of City workers encouraged to take off work to participate in the protest against “the establishment.” But aren’t the Mayor and her Administration part of the establishment they are paying City employees to protest? Is it the City’s intention to have City employees on both sides of a skirmish line?
It is all very confusing to us.
According to the AP, city offices are set to remain open during the strike and Quan’s office has urged businesses not to close.
Protesters say they are heading to the port – one of the country’s largest – to block “the flow of capital.”
To make matters worse, in a memo written on Friday, City Administrator Deanna Santana said workers can use vacation or other paid time off to participate in the strike.
Below is a CNNMoney report from inside Occupy Oakland:
Quan said in a statement Tuesday that she hoped Wednesday’s strike would be peaceful and that she was working with interim Police Chief Howard Jordan to ensure that the protesters issues are “front and center.”
“The pro-99 percent activists – whose cause I support – will have the freedom to get their message across without the conflict that marred last week’s events,” Quan said. “Although getting the balance right is never an easy task, in Oakland we are committed to honoring free speech and protecting public safety.”
Police are understandably upset, given that they were asked to clear the protesters’ encampment a mere week ago, only to have Quan allow the protesters to reclaim the camp a day later.
Meanwhile, last Tuesday’s raid along with the riot-standoff that evening cost the city $1 million, said Sgt. Dom Arotzarena, president of the Oakland police union.
Arotzarena said that the officers, who also view themselves as part of the “99%,” are now confused about Quan‘s stance heading into Wednesday’s strike.
“What was last Tuesday all about? The mayor is painting us as the bad guys in all of this,” he told The Associated Press. “We get one order one day and then she flip-flops the next day. We’re going to be seen as the establishment, and it’s not fair to the police, it’s not fair to anyone.
“We’re set to fail on this.”
The mayor, a self-proclaimed civil rights activist in San Francisco’s progressive movement, has only been in office for less than a year, and already struggles to formulate a coherent response to the Occupy which she says she and the city “supports.”
“It was sort of remarkable that she was able to alienate both sides,” said University of San Francisco political scientist Corey Cook of Quan’s relationship with protesters and police. “She has no friends at this point.”
The Associated Press contributed to this article.

Posted on November 1, 2011 at 11:14pmI agree with Redbone007, businesses are being targeted and they are the ones who need to do something. A liberal Mayor who is inconsiderate of his own police officers…not too surprising really. If the city loses a lot of their businesses they‘ll be sorry for the stance they’ve taken.

This is most likely a plot to force a crisis, legitimizing use of deadly force and the imposition of Marshall Law, following which the government will use this as an excuse to take over the entire nation by force and throw all of us Blazers in the FEMA clink.
That is a seriously plausible scenario. If I were you, I’d be really, really afraid.

The news here in the No. Bay says that there are going to be 254 teachers participating by taking sick/vacation time which there contract allows them. NOT all at the same time. But rest assured they will have “Subs” to make sure that there is adult supervision in the classes. wTf? So basically the City of Cokeland is paying the Teachers to strike while paying for Subs to be babysitters for 254 classes. These people are so flippin lame. They complain about all of the cuts to education and public security, yet it is ok to run up MILLIONS so that they can march, camp, protest, stirke and cause civil disobediance. OMG.

The problem is, WE THE PEOPLE do not seem to be trying to take our country back. There are 2 ways to do this: (1) by force, in which case we will most likely lose, and (2) by making demands of our elected officials along with running ourselves for ALL offices. It will take time this way, but at least it’s much more likely. These communist/marxists progressives didn’t get in positions of power overnight. They’ve been seeping into office slowly over the years and now feel they have enough of our power positions that they can transform this nation into something the majority of us want nothing to do with. We had all better be doing everything we can to rectify this situation and we had better start today if we’re not already involved, because there may not be a tomorrow to begin.

I believe people in general are basically good with a few bad apples. Some (probably very few) abuse their power. The problem in Oakland is not the police it is the moron mentality of the mayor. She is supporting a mob and thinks it is going to be a peaceful assembly. Oakland has a history of these things turning very bad. The intention of these leaders in this movement is to provoke a response. They are using the protesters as the useful idiots they are. The police should deploy at distance and observe. When the mob gets out of hand (which they will) they should oblige and give the response that is being provoked. Once they contain the law breakers they should go after the leadership of the mob that planned this lawlessness that is about to embark.

Posted on November 2, 2011 at 12:04amBurningtruth…I do hope you‘re right and I do remember the 60’s well. In fact, I was in the Navy in the Bay Area from 69-73. There was a rapid and strange evolution of society that occurred during that time and I must say it was interesting to see it up close and personal. Gratefully, it didn’t overwhelm our general culture then (as you said); just challenged it. Actually, I think a lot of them (radicals) simply joined the system and did their dirty work quietly within. My take is that there is no longer two thirds of the American people who are now actually working for what they have. (fair pay for real work). I think it’s more like 50/50 currently and trending down to be much worse in the near future. Man, I hope Im wrong.

Posted on November 1, 2011 at 10:44pmPolice…quit listening to that crazy woman. Listen to the citizens and business owners who need and want and deserve your help and protection. Figure out how to kick her ass out and take your city back….if you still can. She’s anti-American for crying out loud.

Posted on November 2, 2011 at 5:44amI believe that we will see that many who have taken an oath to serve will remember their spoken vows and realize how serious the progressives are to take America to her knees. I believe rather than turning on the citizens they will turn their backs on the unions and will follow what they know in their hearts to be right. Sure some will continue to be puppets but many will join us and understand the urgent and profound necessity of the conservatives that are prepared and willing to defend our Republic For Which It Stands, One Nation Under God, Indivisable, With Liberty And Justice For All.

Posted on November 1, 2011 at 11:10pmYou are a delusional idiot. I would say I am young, strong, well prepared, and very adaptable to most any scenario. I sure as hell don’t want a revolution. This will take place in our streets and towns, our families! Do you know what always fills a vacuum of power? Evil. Do you really want to risk martial law/draconian masters? Lawlessness? How bout if things go to **** and they come for your women? Have you ever read any history? You live in a fantasy land. You want more? Grow some motivation and WORK FOR IT!!! Nothing can stop you if you refuse to take no for an answer.

Is it so inconceivable? After all, the police are a heavily unionized, working-class organization. What do they think when their leaders take away their pensions and bargaining rights? The police refused to arrest protesters in Madison, WI, and now in Oakland they might turn on the political establishment as well. A general strike among police forces would create a real crisis that would force concessions.

North Carolina for Herman Cain… http://ning.it/uOUweX
1. Herman Cain is NOT a politician. (I have gotten a lot of grief for this comment, but I feel as if I’m on solid ground here because politicians have have gotten this country into the mess we are in, and it’s about time for us to hire a “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” type of candidate. You know, a regular common sense citizen that still owns his own soul and NOT beholden to anyone)
2. Herman Cain is probably the ONLY candidate that can beat Obama. (Two major factors play into my reason for making such a bold statement. One… do NOT believe for a second that beating Obama is going to be easy, and I don’t care who tells you so, they are either dead-wrong or lying to you. Just the expected historical level of cheating that is expected by the Obama Election Thug Machine may be enough for Obama to beat any candidate we put forth. Secondly and more importantly… Herman is the ONLY candidate that can strip away 30% or more of the minority vote from Obama)
There are some very good reasons other than just these two, but for me, these two are all I need.

Posted on November 1, 2011 at 10:41pmThe mayor was likely co-opted by Obama’s buddies. Van Jones is from Oakland as is Valerie Jarrett. Oakland is near San Francisco which is Nancy Pelosi’s territory. She was probably told to be on board “or else”. The cops are being sacrificed for “the cause”.
