Congress Deals Major Blow to Obama’s Gitmo Pledge

A federal spending bill expected to pass in the House of Representatives Wednesday is set to block President Barack Obama’s stated goal of closing the U.S. detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The massive spending bill was released by Democrats early Wednesday morning and would expressly prohibit the Obama administration from spending any money to transfer detainees to the United States or to purchase a replacement prison on U.S. soil as the president had planned.

A disturbing new report released this week suggests that up to 25 percent of released Gitmo detainees have returned to their terrorist roots.

The spending measure is designed to prevent the administration from taking action on closing Guantanamo over the next year, and with Republicans about to retake majority control in the House of Representatives, Obama’s first presidential order will be limited to merely a symbolic gesture.

Further, the administration’s lack of follow-through in closing the Guantanamo detention facility will only further anger the president’s dwindling base of support on the liberal left. If Obama chooses to run for re-election in 2012, he’ll have to explain why one of his chief campaign pledges went unfinished during his first term in office.

In addition, the Washington Times notes that the spending bill “explicitly prohibits the transfer of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the alleged mastermind of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.”

“None of the funds provided to the Department of Justice in this or any prior Act shall be available for the acquisition of any facility that is to be used wholly or in part for the incarceration or detention of any individual detained at Naval Station, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, as of June 24, 2009,” the bill says. …

Earlier this year, Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. told a Senate panel that the administration was ready to move forward but needed Congress to approve the money to buy a new prison in the United States. The department was eyeing a facility in Illinois, Mr. Obama’s home state, as a likely candidate for the massive conversion that would be required to hold detainees.

The detainee decision is part of the massive full-year spending bill Congress will consider to fund the government for fiscal 2011. The fiscal year began Oct. 1, and Congress has not passed a single one of the dozen appropriations bills yet, which has left the government running on stopgap funding.

The spending bill will also freeze total federal discretionary funding at 2010 levels — a total of $1.09 trillion.

    I have been there! It is basicly a Dog-Pound for people. The parts that you see on film/tape are approved for public release. The chose the guards fo size, cruelty Wake up America! Your government is being run by a bunch of CRIMINALS in suits and ties. They frickin’ own YOU!

    So Promises ANY Politician makes need to be taken for what they are..EMPTY Rhetoric. Now we‘re finally waking up and it’s almost Too Late ! So much is on the Table and being Voted on behind Closed doors Mainly by the Dems. Gitmo is the Least of our concerns.

    If they can get the “Dream Act” and other Socialist measures passed…It’s a VICTORY for All of Them. And that’s where the Real War begins ! All the Prayers’ better be on your knees 24/7….

    Before Obama considers spending a dime on closing Gitmo, he should consider NOT bringing the National Guard troops from our southern border. They are to stay in place until February, except for Arizona, where those troops will stay until September 2011 or until the $135 million runs out. Some from California, New Mexico, and Texas will be moved to Arizona, but the rest go home. And, guess what?! GEORGIA has more illegal aliens than Arizona does! They recently arrested 35 drug dealers who were members of a Mexican cartel distribution center just south of Atlanta.

    Have you thought about the money wasted on Pelosi’s jet and her rats? That money could have financed a lot of border security. Why is Obama such a suck-up to radical Islamic terrorists while he leaves Americans out in the cold?

    I read on-line that the guards at Gitmo have to wear gloves when theyo give that book of hate, the Koran, to the terrorist inmates!

    When President Obama took office I was very eager to know what would be his first priority within the first 100 days of his new career. To my dismay he made the issue of shutting down Gitmo and the relocation of these terrorists to be tried in our civil courts instead of treating them as Prisoners of war and to be justly tried in a military court.
    I wished that he would at least address the issue of our open borders. A singularly stark reality of our inability to protect our nation.
    He did address that issue but not in the manner one would consider common sense. He left the borders open and threatened the state of Arizona for taking matters of security in her own hands. He went even further to push his “dream act” of amnesty to undeserving illegal immigrants who are just as ungrateful towards the host nation of the USA and have instead pushed the issue of “La Raza” (The race) to reclaim lands based on twisted logic and impose their language on an English speaking nation instead of learning the language of their illegally adopted land.
    They have cost the US tax payer our lives, our tax dollars, and even compromised our voting system and have given little in return. Yet President Obama keeps his illegal Hispanic population for his own chance of rigging the votes in his favor.
    Now matters have got out of control as the illegal immigrant issue has metastasized into the cancerous drug warfare that is taking on the Mexican government and spilling over into our society. Yet President Obama stand silent on this pressing issue.

    The reason obama/soros want terrorists tried on America soil is none other than twisting the courts on our soil to include ‘enemies of state’ This goes hand in hand with their inciting and selective prosecution.
    They will have precedence that reverse engineer our rights in the courts as Citizens by expanding ‘criminal courts’ to include anyone they want to deem a ‘terrorist’. Terrorist is a term they have already altered as a ‘contingency whatever’..

    I never have understood how we have an embargo against Cuba, yet we have a base there. That’s fine. We NEED to keep an eye on the Commies. Obama is not going to shut it down. Where else would he get his under-the-counter cigars for his buddies. Perhaps he could even bribe Rush with a box or two. By the way … which has more future potential for Black Market trading when the crash comes … Cuban cigars … or … Beck’s Gold? … Hmmmmmmmm ……..

      Un like bases in Germany and the far east which we are there with there concent and lease off of these countries for millions of dollars a year, Gitmo Bay is “esentialy” US territory. Even if we close the prision tomarow we will never give the base back to Cuba.

    For some reason, I seem to trust a company of Marines guarding these people, rather than leaving a bunch of wackos who know how to wreak havoc, inside of a facility run by Department of Corrections. No offense to cops, but they lack threat that Marines carry.

      Not only term limits and defunding, how about a detailed list of minimum requirements, like 100 hours of ACTUALLY have sat as judge in a judicial capacity instead of just having gone to college. Every one else has a minimum set of requirements for job qualifications and none of those include political sympathy.
