Congressman on MTP Calls Out NBC and Lawrence O‘Donnell for Saying ’Nasty Things’ About Mormonism

Rep. Labrador Calls Out NBC and Lawrence ODonnell for Saying Nasty Things About Mormonism

NBC’s “Meet the Press” aired a special Easter Sunday segment this week on “Faith & Politics” featuring several legislators and clergy of various religions. The discussion remained civil for most of the segment without delving into heated debate on specific hot-button political issues. But after host David Gregory pressed Republican Idaho Rep. Raul Labrador on whether Mitt Romney’s Mormon faith would become a controversy within the 2012 presidential election, as several Republican legislators have accused the Obama campaign of planning on making it, the freshman congressman fired back that Gregory‘s own network has already made Romney’s faith an issue.

“Look at your own network. MSNBC, you have Lawrence O’Donnell just saying some really nasty things about the Mormon religion, about the founding of our religion, that it was based on some guy just waking up some morning and deciding that… he wanted, he had an extra-marital affair, and that’s how the religion was founded. There’s some really nasty things already being said by your own network, by NBC.”

Rep. Labrador is calling attention to the latest episode in MSNBC host Lawrence O‘Donnell’s ongoing fixation with the history of the church of which the Romney family are prominent members.

“Mormonism was created by a guy in upstate New York in 1830 when he got caught having sex with the maid and explained to his wife that God told him to do it,” O’Donnell said on his show Tuesday. “Forty-eight wives later, Joseph Smith’s lifestyle was completely sanctified in the religion he invented to go with it. Which Mitt Romney says he believes.”

Since Mitt Romney entered the national political landscape in 2008, O’Donnell has been infuriated by the media not questioning the former Massachusetts governor’s support for what the MSNBC host has called the “racist faith” of Romney’s father.

The Boston Globe notes that a Quinnipiac poll last year showed 29 percent of Republicans and 46 percent of Democrats are uncomfortable with the prospect of a Mormon president.

Rep. Labrador, who has not endorsed Romney for president and is a Mormon as well, said earlier in the segment that “everyone in politics is going to be influenced by their faith,“ and argued that ”we can‘t talk about having politics void of any religious faith because then what you’re saying is you’re asking people to not be who they are.”

“What you need to look at is the man, Mitt Romney,” Rep. Labrador went on to say. “We need to look at his life and the things that he’s done. And clearly he’s had a very good life.”

I think that one point people are trying to make is that by his own admission, Joseph Smith used a “seer stone” and “divining rods” to“decipher” these “gold plates” that no one else was allowed to see. There is ssoooo much more weirdness. There are many historical sources from the area that reference the Joseph Smith family practiced scams and trickery to take advantage of others. Mormons are not considered Christians because they are polytheists, due to believing they can become Gods of their own worlds someday and that Our God is just one of many. All Christians/Catholics beilieve in the one Triune God, Jesus, Holy Spirit and that through grace of the Lord Jesus alone we can be saved.
People just think Romney is either so stupid that he would believe Joseph Smith the scammer or he is scamming the Mormons for the money. At any rate, he only really wants the top 1% to have the more of the pie and the bottom 99% to have less. Not what America needs right now. Like it or not mainstream America does care about religion. Our Constitution is modeled after Judeo-Christian values system. That’s why the Taliban, hates us.

Stifle your spew. Some enemies of Joseph Smith began spreading rumors and lies about his character, and then these lies were repeated, and quoted, and cross referenced with other rumors until there appears to be this overwhelming pile of evidence against him. But the foundation is a lie. Of course Joseph Smith was a contraversial figure, of course, his statements of doctrine ran counter to prevailing beliefs and traditions, and sometimes the only defense against someone crying foul on your faith is to attack the messenger. (The motivations here are more political than faith based.) His very existence, his claims of being a prophet and the devoted following he received were all perceived as threats, and handled as such.

All reports, studies, and papers regarding the life and history of Joseph Smith are biased, either by his supporters or his detractors. The issue of his true history cannot be derived from available sources, for all are tainted by non-believers and apologists the same. He either saw God the Father and Jesus Christ in vision or he didn’t, he either translated the Book of Mormon by the gift and power of God, or he didn’t, the church he helped re-establish is either the true and restored Gospel of Jesus Christ, or it isn’t.
Your opinion is a personal matter, but what it boils down to is there is only one way to know for sure, and it is the same dilemma Joseph himself experience when he was 14. He had to ask of God as James 1:5 directs, and so do we.

Proof??? I have studied the life and works of Joseph Smith and not only was he a good person but he is and was a prophet of God. Just because you don‘t believe the same as I do doesn’t give you licence to make a statement without any context whatsoever. Lawrence O’Donnel just lies habitually and MSNBC gives him the stage to do it on. His statements on Joseph Smith were patently stupid and dishonorable. @CHET HEMPSTEAD – Christ was tried and convicted – even executed… what do you think of him? You echo the sentiments expressed by those who called Christ a con-man simply because they lacked the faith to find out the truth for themselves.

Joseph Smith was every bit a true prophet as Moses and Abraham (who by the way, were also both polygamists). I have prayed about it and the Holy Ghost has testified to me that what Joseph Smith taught is 100% true.

Ironically, you’re actually fulfilling a prophecy made of him nearly 200 years ago when he was a simple farm boy in western New York. It was then declared that both good and evil would be spoken of his name by all nations, kindreds, and tongues.

Also note that along with the Native Americans the Mormons were the only group of people that had a government extermination order out against them(Gov. Boggs – Missouri Executive Order 44). So why is it that people have such hatred towards a Christian group of people? All the Mormons I know are some of the best, hardest working, Christian centered people around. Thier religion is one of the fastest growning religions in the world, and they now have more members internationally than they do here in the States. Do your research before you spout off. @chet –

Also, you stated that “he didn’t know they were going to try to get him on a capital charge until after he was in custody.”

The way you phrase it, you imply that you believe he was executed by the state after a conviction… is that what you’ve been told?

Joseph Smith was martyred by a cowardly mob who painted their faces black and stormed the cell of Joseph and his companions – all of which were unarmed. They then began to shoot through the prison door while others were shooting through the windows from outside.

Further, Joseph’s aforementioned comment was not his only warning. The Prophet Joseph Smith was 17 years old when first visited by the angel Moroni in 1823. Moroni prophesied that Joseph Smith’s name “should be both good and evil spoken of among all people” (Joseph Smith—History 1:33). In March 1829, when Joseph was just 23, the Lord warned, “There are many that lie in wait to destroy thee from off the face of the earth” (D&C 5:33). One month later, the Lord revealed, “Even if they do unto you even as they have done unto me, blessed are ye, for you shall dwell with me in glory” (D&C 6:30).

Joseph literally had an army of men willing to defend him with their very lives. Yet he voluntarily surrendered himself to the state to face more false charges (of which he was never found guilty of anything).

Mormonism and Islam are startlingly similar. Both are base on plagiarisms of the Bible and worship corrupt pedophiles as “prophets”. Google it with an open mind. You might learn something, if you dare.

@DittoHead You sir, are the perfect example of a Christian Jihadist. If anyone‘s Christain faith doesn’t fit the teaching of your own, then they are your enemy. Your only next step is to put a gun to a Mormons head like your great great great grand pappy did in the 1830s.

Muslims have multiple wives and their husbands can beat them for disobedience. So I welcome Islamic beliefs here in the US. The divorce rate will freefall and spousal abuse; What is that? We should be up in arms because of their marriage practices. And if you are saying they don’t have multiple wives, WELL, not in this country but in their home country.

On the other hand, Mormons only practiced plural marriage for a few years, why did they stop because Utah went from a US territory to a State.. After becoming a state, they stop the practice, to obey the laws of the land. The people you see today on Oprah, Dr. Phil, etc. are not welcomed in the church, excommunicated.

My last point is this. So if I want to know about the Baptists and their religious practices, I will go to a Jehovah’s witness or angry ex-Baptist for all my authoritative answers. I think not … lol But everyone keep on hating …

      Good Comments.
However, where I work we call Hawaii – Kenya (joke get it?)
Amazes me how groups such as NOW do not get involved with ‘real women rights issues’. I used to belong to NOW – and now when they contact me – I just tell them they no longer represent me. I expect NOW to take issue with beatings, marrying young girls off, gential mutilations , killing them. Everyone gets tied up in knots about how a religion started but what about the fruit of that religion?

First thing that comes to mind, besides NOT being surprised, is how stupid and hypocritical (as usual) to make a big deal of this when THEY gave Obama a complete pass, not vetting, and ignoring all “negative” news, such as the wonderful Rev. Wright’s church & the “Muslim connection”. LOL
Yes, they will try this nonsense but I’m not worried – yes, most non-Mormons are “uncomfortable” with it, as I am, but if he ends up the nominee, there’s nothing that will stop me from voting for him. If I need to choose between a pro-America, pro-Constitution (based on biblical principles) Mormon and a lying, fraudulent, radical insane anti-America, anti-Constitution, anti-Christian (no, he’s not a Christian), highly racist Communist who wants a totalitarian government whom we have considered our “eneimies” ever since our founding and lost millions of lives to keep it intact…………….then I’ll choose the Mormon…and I don’t think God will be upset.

Where are our demands that obama’s Black Liberation Theology church, which he did not throw under the bus until Wright was outed on tape g-ding America, be looked into line upon line, leader statement upon statement down to those who have written explanations of the doctrine.

Intereting trivia, Marx was born the same year as the Mormon church. Both have been growing and functioning behind the scenes. For just such a moment and in clarity to his own naysayers political/theological driven opposition and demonization his powers as Satanic. To this and how you can differentiate He declared, “by their fruits ye shall know them”

He also declared that a house divided cannot stand. Satan does not do good works to fool mankind. He is the Father of Lies and those who love a lie. The secularists deny his existence as old fashioned and unhip as they go off with their crystals and other acceptable mysticism.

The kingdoms of lightness and darkness are further dividing awaiting what cataclysmic event?

Good for Representative Labrador for calling NBC on their own hypocrisy.

If I had been him, however, I would have been even more pointed. I would have said, “Well, it‘s apparent that Obama doesn’t have to say a word about Mormonism because you media lapdogs will do it for him, leaving him to appear as though he is above the fray. I mean, let’s be frank. That’s the re-election game plan, right?”

EXCACTLY! I was saying that to my sister just the other day. Obama and will not directly attack Mitt Romney’s religion, and will even decry it. However, the plan is to have their surrogates (the left media) do the dirty bigoted work for them. I think that David Axelrod has even brought it up a few times to test the waters. I really do believe this to be a coordinated campaign strategy.

The Progressive Liberal left hid from Barry’s “religion” because he believes in Black Liberation Theology. That’s what Jerry Wright taught him for 20 years, and if you listen to Barry’s earlier speeches, they’re filled with key phrases like “Collective Redemption”. Barry only dropped those phrases after Glenn Beck gave a primer in BLT whereby he exposed those phrases. Do a little research of your own. Google Black Liberation Theology and you‘ll find that it’s a fake “religion” built around Oppressors (by definition whites) and Victims (by definition Blacks) and how whites owe blacks everything. Somehow, that seemed to escape the whole Lame Street Media establishment.

I’ll support a Mormon (self reliance and taking care of oneself) long before I could stomach a BLT that believes I owe someone else everything I have.

While denying it, David Gregory repeated the words Romney-Mormon about 30 times…does he really think he’s fooling anybody? What a MORON Gregory is…He should be doing The Kardashian’s show instead.

What’s with these uppity liberals taking pot shots at the Morman people and religion. For goodness sakes they are law abiding citizens. They pay taxes, raise their kids as best they can. They yes, attend a church. Maybe not your personal choice of church congregation, but nice people. So what’s the beef with liberals and the Morman Church? The Church provides lots of services to disadvantaged people. So they say a pray before their diners and give thanks. Is that so offensive to demand verbal attacks to such an extent? How about slandering the Catholic Church or the Muslims NBC, MSNBC. Maybe this latest round of attacks is in part due to the Watergate Equivalent of NBC/MSNBC altering the news and creating the news favorable to a Democrat President and liberal agendas.

Yet another re-run from the Democrat playbook of not discussing facts, but using half truths and innuendos to divert attention. For those of you old enough to remember, the press (lead by the NYT) tried desparately to stir up a tempest in a teacup over Pres. Kennedy’s Catholicism? I remember that there was an article inferring that if Pres. Kennedy were elected, then the Pope would be running the country.
