‘Chicken Offsets’: Conservative Lawyer Creates Website Parodying Liberal Responses to Chick-fil-A

Editors’ note: This article has been updated to reflect the fact that the website in question was a parody.

Are you sick of hearing liberals complain pointlessly about the inherent “sin” of eating at Chick-fil-A? So is Ted Frank, a lawyer who represents consumers in class action lawsuits and has a relatively conservative set of legal credentials, has set up a website called “Chicken Offsets,” a play on Al Gore’s concept of “Carbon Offsets.” On the site, Frank offers an odd deal for supporters of gay rights who also are getting withdrawal from the absence of waffle fries and spicy chicken sandwiches:

Hi! I’m Ted Frank and I love the chicken sandwiches at Chick-fil-A. But I also like my gay-married friends and don’t like the guilt of indirectly supporting Chick-fil-A’s stance on gay rights. And I know there are lots of other people in the same boat. So I’ve started ChickenOffset.com. Every time you buy a chicken-sandwich meal at Chick-fil-A, you can buy an “offset” here. You can print out the receipt and demonstrate to your friends that the money you gave for LGBT youth more than compensates for the profits you put in Chick-fil-A’s coffers. $1 gets you 1 chicken-meal offset; $6 for ten offsets. We promise to send at least 90% of the proceeds (and will almost certainly send more than that) after our minimal expenses to It Gets Better and theWilliams Institute.

Now, lest you be concerned, no, Mr. Frank is not serious, as we had initially reported. Rather, Mr. Frank’s fake market for indulgences, IE the concept of paying money to have your sins wiped clean, is intended to parody the quasi-religious character of liberal objections to the “sin” of eating at a restaurant owned by people who oppose gay marriage. In fact, Mr. Frank goes so far as to write this deliciously ironic disclaimer on the “FAQ” page for his idea:

Isn’t this like the indulgences of old?

It’s little known that the Concilium Tridentinum Butyrum Pullum of 1563 had a codicil excepting chicken sandwiches.

In a hilarious but subtle parody of liberal thinking, Mr. Frank has set up the system for buying his “chicken offsets” so that the market price for that indulgence actually decreases the more you sin (that is, the more “chicken offsets” you need to buy to compensate for giving your business to Chick-fil-A). In other words, after a certain point, sinning has no cost. Mr. Frank also takes direct aim at the hypocrisy of liberals who think buying an “offset” absolves them of moral responsibility for charity or other acts of conviction with this answer on the FAQ:

Shouldn’t I just give money to charity instead of paying a middleman for the offset?

Yes. The charity would get more money that way, though most would find that it costs more than $1 to process a $1 donation, so you should make sure you’re giving them real money. But if you‘re lazy or don’t want to give a material amount to charity, buy an offset from me or someone else selling offsets.

Scathing stuff, especially considering that this particular parody takes aim not just at the opponents of Chick-fil-A, but at Al Gore and his “carbon offset” idea as well. All things considered, it’s almost worth encouraging this to become a serious business, just to see how many liberals would actually pay for these “chicken offsets.”

What group would boycott a business for having the opposite view? It really is ridiculous. I love certain products I KNOW support and advocate for the opposite view. The product/food/beverage is as good as ChiK Fila’s. Just a bit much to boycott a place/product bc the owner has opposite views than someone else or yourself. Just ridiculous. If it were discrimmination in their hiring, completely different story.
    It’s good chicken.

“It Gets Better”. Is that the same group led by that bigoted bully Dan Savage? The same man who chastises teenage Christian kids in front of thousands of people in an auditorium? Who joined a republican campaign only to spread his flu to others by putting his bodily fluids on phones & doorknobs? The same man who bullies anyone with a different opinion than his own, precious, perfect, self-righteous own?

God, the Father, commanded man and woman to marry and multiple. Jehovah (the pre-mortal Jesus Christ) declared homosexuality an abomination. Paul, an Apostle of Christ, declared homosexuality unnatural affection.

How does one condone an act that God forbids and still call oneself a “Christian”? Easy, they are hypocrits that say one thing while serving a different master.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions, but no unclean person (thought, word, or deed) will return to the presence of the Father, who has not accepted Christ’s Gospel (along with His commandments), repented, been baptized by authority and endured in obedience.

That was my exact thought as I read the article. He is after all an attorney, and he is setting this ordeal up in the image of Al Gore’s carbon rip off. Must be a successful rip off, how big is Gore’s latest home? Doesn’t it take up the better part of three counties?
This nation has the greatest number of lawyers of any in the world. In fact, we have just more than 50% of the world’s attorneys. Something like one in every hundred people is an attorney. And, they do have to find a way to earn money.

Hello? Hello? HELLO????? What is difficult for people to grasp? SATAN wants the word “marriage”–defined by him! God created EVERYTHING that is good. Satan wants to be GOD–but all he can do is work through willing people to “create” a mere distortion. So he wants to RE-define “marriage”. This business about “traditional marriage”….WHAT??? A Christian cannot RE-define marriage anymore than the devil can!! What Christian doesn’t understand–marriage is a picture of JESUS AND HIS CHURCH. “Marriage Supper of the Lamb”–does anyone still read a Bible? A real one?!?! God Almighty calls anything other than a MARRIAGE–an abomination for a REASON. & it seems few Christians (?) know what that means. NO!!! A CHRISTIAN who doesn’t understand or know what “the Bride of Christ” is? Well-ever hear of the church? “The body of Christ?”–ring a bell. Is it possible for anyone to READ a Holy Bible & miss things as plain & SIMPLE as to WHY marriage IS what IS. PERIOD?!? God created a woman–anybody get that? Wo-man, because SHE was FROM the man ADAM. (Wow-the males&females vs Man&Woman…the Fall of Mankind…what happened in the Garden of Eden–”enmity between thy seed & HER seed. THAT would be a GOOD place to START,but )Try to focus–if you think you are a Christian–the rest I don’t care-they are free to reject Jesus-but to be a Christian–YOU GOTTA KNOW WHAT ONE IS–according to GOD. BRIDE of Christ MEANS something. The Church is always a WOMAN. Jesus-NOT

See..as a lefty..I know you believe in thoughtcrime as a viable reason to attack the enemies of your agenda but you see…Chick Fil A as a company has NO RECORD of discrimination against anyone.
So are we to take it that you believe the thoughts of a private citizen are reason enough to inflict reprisals on his or her business? What am I saying? Your a lefty and a statist..OF COURSE that’s what you believe.

AL J ZIRA….the left has lost this argument and they know it. It never was a matter of discrimination it was a matter of first amendment rights. A private citizen is allowed to express his or her own thoughts without fear of reprisals from government entities. But statist filth like REDDENBLACK believe thoughtcrime is an offense that should be punished so when liberal city officials want to ban Chick FIl A from building locations, he‘s all for denying them the permits based on the private thoughts of it’s owner..regardless of whether Chick Fil A actually has a record of discrimination or not.

Yeah starbucks stock went down because the whole quarter was bad. Why was it bad, because customers didn’t buy as much product? But PR has nothing to do with customer demand does it?

Oh and the market climbed while starbucks fell.

Go back to being ENCINOM – at least he was a funny troll.

INRED . . . I know you wanted to lob out your half-baked business savvy and have everyone ooh and ahh, but I got in the way, didn’t I? Sorry.

Let me clear something up for ya . . . “Why was it bad, because customers didn’t buy as much product?”

No, actually, not at all. Revenues – that means customers buying coffee – increased 13% for the most recently announced quarter. It wan’t revenue but profitability that dropped the stock price. Consequently, the idea that PR somehow dampened consumer enthusiasm is flat out wrong.

Look, I don’t enjoy brow beating you like this, Really, I don’t. But you clearly don’t know much about how business works in a free market economy. Just be satisfied that when Sean Hannity tells you it’s a good thing, that it’s a good thing. Oh, and I’d stay out of the equities arena if I were you. Fund traders snack on guys like you for breakfast.

Good for Elton! I am about sick and tired of buying new dictionaries to appease the liberal community!

I like Elton John. He’s completely dissed Madonna so that should count for something. :)

Thank you for that..I was beginning to wonder..Elton is “flambouyant”…but quite honestly I didn’t know he was gay until the last few years…so he‘s one homosexual that doesn’t shove it in your face…he sticks to what he does best, which is singing.

GONZO, Yes he does, and even tried it once, although only briefly. He did play and sing at Rush Limbaugh’s wedding too.

GODLOVINMOM . . . Doesn’t matter what you say after that. All that matters is that you have that image . . . how do I say this . . . in your head.

Even gnats and fles know which is the opposite sex and don’t try to have sex with the same sex. Of course, dogs aren’t always that smart….

No more nasty than a gluttonous fatty mcfat. Or a habitual porn viewer. Or a liar, thief, or slanderer. You just remember that you will be judged in the same manner you judge. Sin is sin.
