Conservatives Trapped By Occupy DC Claim Police Ignored 911 Calls

In addition to not arresting the hundreds of Occupy DC protesters who blocked the entrance of one of the city’s convention centers Friday to prevent those who disagree with them from exiting, several members who attended the Americans for Prosperity Foundation event say police ignored their 9-1-1 calls for more help to in order to protect event attendees from the mob.

The foundation’s director of programs Katie Engdahi told the Daily Caller that Washington D.C. 9-1-1 operators hung up on the organization’s staffers four times as they asked for extra police Friday:

“Engdahl said she called 911 in the middle of the show and told them the protesters appeared organized with a plan of attack as they had all the convention center exits blocked.

‘I did mention [on the 911 call] how coordinated I thought the protesters’ effort was, as well as how ill-prepared both MPD and the Convention Center were in communicating together on how best to solve the problem,’ she explained.

‘I said that I didn’t want it to rise to where we had a confrontation or other problems – and they hung up on me,’ Engdahl said, adding that she and other AFP staffers and volunteers had made at least four 911 calls from inside the convention center asking for help.”

“Last evening when we were in our dinner session, we actually noticed that there were protesters outside, and lined up on each corner,” de la Riva said. “We were getting ready to dismiss activists and let out for the evening. So, I did place a call to 911 just giving them a heads-up that we were going to be leaving the convention area and that there were protesters outside. I did understand that there was already a police presence, but I was hoping that they would be able to calm the situation so that we didn’t run into any altercations. And, they [911] hung up.”

AFP volunteer Melissa Ortiz, who is wheelchair-bound, said she also called 911 to ask for help leaving the convention center. “I personally called 911,” Ortiz told TheDC. “They said, ‘are the police there?’ I said, ‘yes they are.’ Then, click.” They hung up on her too, she said.

AFP representatives told TheDC that the protests led to some serious injuries for event attendees, including a 78-year-old woman who suffered severe injuries to her wrist, both legs and ankle after falling down a flight of stairs. The woman was not sure if she was pushed or fell as a result of the swarming mob on the porch of the conference center. Despite calls to emergency officials, no ambulance came to treat the woman’s injuries and she claims that the few police on the scene did not even help her. She says a single protester claiming to be an Occupy DC “medic” came to her aid, and walked her back to the hotel. The woman and a man injured on the scene took a cab to the hospital.

Videos posted to YouTube and Twitter show large crowds massed in front of the convention center, chanting and shouting where the Americans for Prosperity “Defending the American Dream” summit was taking place.

Several videos from the event posted on YouTube show protesters blocking a woman in a wheelchair from exiting the event, as well as several police officers standing between protesters and the entrance,  with others standing idly by in the street.

They pressed signs reading “Government for the people” and “I am a human being” against the glass and chanted “This is what democracy looks like!” as well as one protester pressing his bare rear end against the glass door at about (2:50):

The woman in the wheelchair told TheDC that protesters screamed at her as she tried to exit, and when she was finally able to get out,the protesters “tried to pull me out of my wheelchair and take my service dog.” The woman claims that nearby police did nothing while this all happened.

A spokeswoman for Washington Mayor Vincent Gray acknowledged to TheDC that four 911 calls were made from inside the convention center, but said the operators did not “hang up” on the callers.

Americans for Prosperity is funded in part by Charles and David Koch, the brothers who run Koch Industries — which is apparently part of the reason why protesters targeted the event. Several protesters told the Washington Post that their main goal was to prevent conservatives from leaving the site.

The AFP released an official statement on the protest:

“While we support the right to free speech and to peaceably assemble, it is saddening and unacceptable that the “occupy” group launched an attack on our own peaceable assembly and expression of free speech,” said AFPF Executive Vice President Tracy Henke.

Henke continued, “There is a deep divide in our fundamental vision for America. We at AFPF advocate for individual freedom and responsibility, ideas that enrich and empower society as a whole.”

Rather than inciting class warfare, our leaders need to focus on creating an environment that will enable American businesses to create jobs and economic growth–and they need to condemn these increasingly violent protests.”

DC Police Chief Cathy Lanier told TheDC that “violent protesters were arrested on scene.”

      OMG. How can a parent think it’s a good thing to put your kids in front of doors you are blockading? That mother was using her children as tools to manipulate the police.So messed up. Her parents or her husband or someone she knows ought to take those kids away from her as long as she is involved in the protest because obviously she is using poor judgement.

      Okay pay attention conservatives…If you find yourself in this situation, you call 911 and say “I am being attacked and held against my will. Send the cops or I will use my gun and shoot my way out”. Watch how many cops show up. There is a story similar to this that went around the internet. An old man called 911 and said some guys were breaking into his shed. 911 said there were no officers available. He called back and said never mind I shot them all. Cops came from everywhere. The cops then asked him “I thought you said you shot them” To which he said “I thought you said there were no cops available”.

      Thank you EqualJustice for sharing the clip. This man’s story is incredible. To think here in our beloved United States, our officers would be ordered to stand down and allow the protesters to violate the freedom of our citizens as they did. Someone commented that this was a hostage situation, I agree. This garbage of the protesters throwing themselves in front of cars and provoking violent attacks is shameful. Cities need to be held accountable if officers are watching and doing nothing. I am sure the officers are following orders. The tapes I have seen of the protesters screaming non-stop at officers makes it quite clear the police are simply following directives from their superiors. Lack of accountability is what motivates these out of control protesters and the politicians who encourage and tolerate this behavior. The OWS folks have a right to PEACEABLY assemble. They are missing the keyword: PEACEABLY!

      Then everyone there who was protesting needs to go to prison for un-lawful containing someone. Is it not illegal to hold people hostage?

      As for the 911 people should be investigated then find out who hung up and arrest them for abandoning people to their own fate. or at least fired and fined for endangering civilions

      mtcountrygrl: True, but then you get stuck with “misuse of 911” and “filing a false police report”. People tend to forget that they are not the only emergency being dealt with. Even in small counties, there is almost always a fire, burglary, or auto accident going on somewhere. If you exaggerate your emergency, you are pulling resources from their appropriate emergencies. Yes, police probably arrived in the case of your “story”, but they were probably pulled from other calls that were more serious (I know, it‘s hard to believe that YOUR call isn’t always the MOST serious).

      What kind of a picture do you need to have drawn for you? Police are UNION. Unions are behind the OWS movement. You can’t separate reality from the facts. Reliable unfaltering law enforcement and fire protection for “all” tax payers hasn‘t been all that ’trustworthy’ for quite a while.       You can not win litigation against police departments for their choosing to not prevent a crime in progress. Well, I suppose you could try, but it’s been tried before on several occasions and the ruling is always the same. It is not the legal responsibility or legal obligation of any police department and its members, either local (municipality police or county sherrif) or federal (FBI, DHS), to prevent a crime.

      They do have a legal obligation to INVESTIGATE crime, however many times the investigation starts in the coroner’s office. It’s is wise to respect the police. It is wise to listen to the police. It is wise to collaborate and work with them if the request your assistance.

      It is incredibly naive to depend on the police though.

      Can file a complaint with Public Integrity – an internal investigative agency of Police Departments – required to conduct investigations into any complaint filed by the Public – involving malfeasance, inappropriate behavior, negligence, corruption, among other matters.

      They would be able to inquire into identities of 911 operators who hung up, and whether the earlier 911 calls for additional police officers was ever given to Commander of the district police stations.

      Then an attorney can get involved – bc the Superintendent of the Police Department and Mayor would not want a lawsuit filed – for something that should be handled internally effectively – for failure to act – in which results of a complaint filed w Public Integrity – if does not produce required results = exposing corruption – would place Superintendent of Police Dept and the Mayor in position to be parties to a lawsuit – based on civil rights violations and civil racketeering, RICO statues if part of a cover-up.

      That is my suggestion – since every city is required to maintain complaints on police.

      Also check into a watchdog organization – like a Metropolitan Crime Commission – to get behind the complaint – as that is their mission.

      Also contact JUDICIAL WATCH, a government watchdog organization based out of Washington, DC – have been tracking Eric Holder and Obama, and their under the radar thuggery, such as colluding w ACORN and ACLU to file separate lawsuits against State of Arizona.

      Horsecrazy: You seem to think that 911 dispatchers have more power than they do. Their job is to get police on the ground to your location. Once that’s done, what more do you expect of them? Dispatchers are not in any way “in command” of the police force.

    These a-holes seem to want a war but as with all commie, backshooter, cowards are only willing to wage it against little old ladies and people in wheelchairs. This is a prime example of the Obama led street thugs holding a group of conservatives hostage, forcing them to do their bidding . Unfortunately there are only two choices in these totalitarian dictated scenarios, comply or defend yourself. The catch-22 is that as long as we comply, they win by default. If we defend ourselves Comrade Chairman Obama will be able to declare marshal law and can then be dictator for life. THAT is why this no win scenario cannot be delayed any longer.       You should look at the clip where they pushed an elderly woman down the stairs. That clip alone shows the culpability of the police department. This is absolutely unbelievable.     The Kochheads are evil. They make a profit at any cost to the environment. They ignore laws and regulations, they artificially boost the cost of oil by parking tankers off the coast until prices increase, and they help terrorist countries like Iran by doing business with them under subsidiary companies. If people want to support these things, being inconvenienced by Patriots should be the least of their worries.

      Exrepublisheep is not very bright and has ZERO facts to back up his argument. Since you know so much about Koch companies and how they get their oil, please explain from where these tankers come from? Explain how mythical tankers filled with oil that has already been paid for cause the price of oil to rise? Then when you are done figuring those things out, explain how each of their 3 North American refineries really get their oil. Please, only use facts in your argument.

      And socialism. Read The Road To Serfdom. he said that socialism ALWAYS turns to fascism. They realize the only way to get what they want for the country is to force it. No one wants to change that drastically, that fast. So they become fascists and make it happen. Then, when the people who started all this win, they’ll get rid of those that fought for it first, because it won’t be what they thought they were getting, and they’ll desent…they’ll become the enemy.

    So these protests really aren’t about Wall Street, they are about silencing any and all opposition to their point of view. Otherwise they would have never protested at this conservative convention. They hate the Koch brothers because they have been told to hate them by the MSM and their leaders.

      Mob rule is how Obama has always operated – as evidenced by his life-time work as an operative for ACORN – when he and attorney Robert Bauer were threatening banks and lending institutions with discrimination lawsuits – to force loans to people to purchase houses who could not afford to pay rent = NINJA loans = No Income, No Job or Assets loans.

      They staged protests in the lobbies of banks and lending institutions = MOBS.

      This MOB MENTALITY contributed to the housing and banking meltdowns – that Obama falsely portrays he “inherited” – when he was directly involved in creating it – under the democratic party’s Clinton Administration.

    Holding someone against their will is unlawful imprisonment and it is a felony. These protesters should brought up on felon charges. And then of course thier is pain,suffering and emotional disress of being unlawfully imprisoned that would be a civil suit.
