Consolidating Power: Egyptian President Orders ‘Retirement’ of Top Military Officials

Egypt’s Islamist President Mohammed Morsi ordered the “retirement” of the country’s top military officials Sunday in what appears to be the boldest move towards seizing absolute authority since he was elected.

Experts have long maintained that Egypt has little to fear from the Muslim Brotherhood or growing extremism because the military, which retained significant control after Morsi’s election, acted as a counterweight.  With military leaders being replaced by Morsi appointees, that balance of power is effectively useless.

The Jerusalem Post adds:

Taking advantage of the Sinai crisis to oust his rivals in the military, Egyptian President Muhammad Morsi fired Defense Minister Hussein Tantawi and the Egyptian chief of staff Sami Anan on Sunday, in a move that sent shock waves throughout Egypt and beyond.

The move is being widely seen as a signal by the Muslim Brotherhood that power is now firmly concentrated in the hands of the Islamist civilian government.

“Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi has been transferred into retirement from today,” presidential spokesman said in a statement, appointing in his place as armed forces chief and defense minister General Abdellatif Sisi.

But that’s not all.  Adding to the sweeping changes in the military leadership, the president also ordered the retirement of the commanders of the navy, air defense, and air force.  He also appointed a senior judge, Mahmoud Mekki, as vice president.

Mohammed Aboul-Ghar, a founder of the new Egyptian Social Democratic Party, said the power struggle between Morsi and the military has now been settled in Morsi’s favor.

“The military council was forced out of power and lost its position and this was inevitable,” he said. “In the power struggle, the military council was increasingly weakened because of its decisions” and its failure to secure a more straightforward path to democratic transition, he explained.

Morsi, a U.S.-educated engineer, has been intensely seeking to assert his authority in the face of the powerful military.  On Wednesday, he fired the nation’s intelligence chief after militants killed 16 Egyptian soldiers along the border with Israel in Sinai, and is apparently using the conflict as an excuse to rapidly reshuffle his opposition.

CNN has further analysis:

The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF), which ruled Egypt for 17 months after longtime ruler Hosni Mubarak stepped down, stripped the presidency of many of its key powers before handing the reins of office to Morsi on June 30. Tantawi was the head (SCAF) and Annan was No. 2 on the ruling council.

With Sunday’s moves, Morsi restored the powers to his office– most significantly, taking back control of the constitution drafting process and the right to legislate.

“The question is now–will these decisions end that conflict and the duality of powers, or will there be resistance?” analyst Gamal Abdel-Gawad asked. “These are huge changes.”

Commenters on Arab media sites have had mixed reactions.  Some are excited about the changes, while others are concerned that Egyptians will “starve to death” if the Muslim Brotherhood continues expanding its authority and the West chooses to stop aid payments.

“He is becoming even more powerful than Hosni Mubarak used to be,” Egyptian political analyst Hani Nesira remarked.

    Once the military leaders are “retired” for the good of the “people”

    They will be powerless to resist the show trials where they will be condemned, imprisoned, or executed. For the good of the people of course.

    This will be exciting TV for at least a few months, and will distract the people while the Muslim Brotherhood consolidates their power and turns the nation into a hellish Theocracy.

      But food will grow scarce. People will start starving. You can kill Coptic Christians & take their food, but that is a stopgap measure.

      It is one thing to try to feed the people of the southern half of a small country like Somalia with a population of 10 million now (20 years ago it was?) Egypt has 90 million people. That is almost a whole order of magnitude greater. Which NGO or UN agency is going to risk its’ people there?

Most people would say thats Great, the problem with it is obama and hilary are cordinating it!     2) stop issuing travel visas for tourists to egypt (hurt their tourist income)
    3) leave them to their sharia devices
    4) offer asylum to coptic christians that want it
    5) bomb them back to the 8th century if their islamic/sharia nonsense spills over into any non-islamic country.

      I am shocked. Surprised? No. People who buy into the MB give tithes. While the MB provides(?) charity with the money, it also enriches them. The skim off the top is huge. The Muslim Brotherhood heavies are rich & err … well heavy. That is to say they are not nutritionally deprived. They operate many businesses with those money from the tithes. It wouldn’t take much through back channels to funds some terrorists to hit Egyptian & Israeli troops. Who gains? Neither Israel nor the Egyptian military gained from the attack which killed 18 soldiers. The MB did. Anyone tell me that they couldn’t have paid the money thru a back channel?

    Will the military allow the MB to take more control of them or will they object.
    Will they give the appearance that the Morsi has more power, until he wants to use it.
    Will they take the retirement and then leave everything.
    Could they just give the appearance that that they retire because they are no longer the face of the Counsel but still have influence on the replacements.
    Will Mohammed Hussein Tantawi be arrested in the coming days if he really does not retire and the military still follow his leadership.

    Most people assume Obama is supporting the Egyptian military; quite to the contrary, he will help the Muslim Brotherhood allies he has in consolidation of power over the land and the imposition of Sharia in any means possible. His end goal is the same as with Soros, destruction of Israel.

    Darn the bad luck. Looks like we have to fight whether we want to or not. The drought is going to push food prices up. Farmland being dedicated to ethanol production is already blamed for starting the riots & unrest two years ago. Ethanol production is not dropping & now we have the drought to further increase prices. Egypt has 2 or 3 months of foreign currency reserves left to buy food of which Egypt imports 50%. Tourism & investment have dried up tanking their economy.

    It leaves 3 choices. Morsi liberalized the economy & society, the Muslim Brotherhood fall for power or they go to war to direct the masses to an outside enemy.

Now Egypt is down to nothing in foreign currency reserves, has a very bad and persistent balance of trade deficit, and has no credit line.       Well Renaissance Capital is bullish (at least in public) on Egypt. 18 months ago Egypt had 36 billion in reserves. Now it about 15.1 billion. So they are losing a bout a billion a month in reserves.
      If they devalue the currency to fix that the people suffer from inflation especially in food. Riots anyone?

      “Renaissance Capital disagreed with suggestions the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) would be forced to devalue the local currency. Last month, data from the CBE showed that reserves fell from $15.72 billion in February to $15.12 billion in March. ”

      Check into “botgas”. They had to start rationing it and everyone in Egypt uses it to cook with.
      The rationing of Botgas had a lot to do with starting the Arab Spring.

      The En-Viru(s)-Mental-ists can go to Egypt and tell them that the price hikes on botgas is for their own good since it contributes to Anthropomorphic Global Warming . they could say something similar to Obama’s “Under my administration electricity will necessarily sky rocket.” If that doesn’t get them hung, they could start reciting the liberal dogma of AGW & other crap and ask the Muslims tobe done with their bronze age magic man in the sky.

      With Obama backing the Muslim Brotherhood, that is all but assured. Mr Obama has allowed and enabled the rising of a problem that will severely come back to haunt America in the years ahead. If a third world war commences, I see the Middle East between Syria/Israel/Egypt being the critical set of flash points.

      Obama has more blood upon his willing hands than many others in history, save for ones like Mao and Pol Pot and Stalin.
