Construction Near the West Wing: Is Obama Adding a Pool?

For more than a year White House staff and press have had to deal with the noise of jackhammers and other construction coming from near the West Wing. Today, just off the north lawn in front of the West Wing where the sound emanated from sits a hole. ABC News reports that the General Services Administration claims the construction is an upgrade for the buildings antiquated utilities. Some are skeptical if that’s the full story:

“Some believe it’s an expansion of the the Presidential Emergency Operations Center, while others guess the construction is to add underground access from the White House to the Old Executive Office Building, or to the Treasury Building.

The jokes have also come in, is it a new swimming pool? A presidential man cave? A way to create jobs?”

In April, officials told AP that completion of the White House’s “Big Dig” was still years away. Part of the construction includes an underground tunnel which officials say will only be used as a pathway for replacement of the new utilities infrastructure at the proper depth and location. Spokeswoman Sahar Wali said in April that the construction is not putting in place longstanding plans for underground office space and will not involve the Presidential Emergency Operations Center, the hardened bunker under the East Wing that’s a shelter for nuclear attack.

However, a New York Times article published Tuesday says the final phase of construction will take place near the emergency center and involve security:

“Although White House officials say they don’t know too much about the construction, some have said they think it is, as one put it, ‘security related.’

Another White House official said that the construction would eventually link whatever is being built underground with the operations center, which was originally built during the administration of Franklin D. Roosevelt – the idea being a general expansion of an emergency base of operations.

‘It is security-related construction,’ said the official, who was not authorized to speak publicly about the project. ‘Even we don’t know exactly what.’

A larger operations center would reduce the need for emergency evacuations to shadow government locations like Mount Weather in Bluemont, Va., and would help ensure continuity of government,’ as Mr. Cheney has put it.”

ABC News reports that the dig is the first step in a $376 million project that will last for four years and progress across the North Lawn all the way to the East Wing. The West Wing portion alone is costing $86 million.

    Personally, I’d say that the next President needs to undo everything being done by Mr. Obama. His actions – and his ‘friends’ throughout his term as Presidennt lead me to believe that this is being done in case he loses in 2012. Not that I don’t trust him…but I don’t trust him.
    Stop the digging, especially if it’s taxpayer money. I’m tired of paying for his apology tours, toys, vacations and over-indulgences.

    I’m in agreement with the article…more underground tunnels connecting the WH to other buildings, and a more secure operations center in case of nuclear attack. Hopefully BHO will be gone by completion and a GOD president will take occupancy.

    For once, I’ve no problem with the money being spent on this.

    This is probably being built for security. Some place to be safe should all heck break loose.

    That would be Obama’s throne room. You see, after the “bottom up, top down” plan of his using the Occupy protesters the States will do anything to avoid the bankruptcy that the cost of policing the protesters will result in. Along comes Obama with his sweeping change “we can believe in” and scraps the constitution to have the power to stop the protesters (end of freedom of speech to start). Then, after declaring himself King Obama of the New America the Oval Office will be a relic of the past. A history that must be forgotten so that it can never be rekindled. BTW, I am currently wearing a tin foil hat (I hope) :D

      It should be but we will be the last to know. Maybe they are preparing for something big.Regardless spending money like this now? The other night here at home we were talking about the progressives having a safe place to go where they would be protected if we were attacked here on our soil. I don’t mean a 9/11 attack. Something far more serious. It is like they know something will happen before it does. If Obama is ousted from office I wouldn’t trust this new addition if I were a conservative. Hard telling what it consists of.They do NOTHING without carefully calculating it first. Doubt that we ever find out the truth. If it is for them to have an emergency place to go you can bet enough will be contructed for them quickly and the rest will only be cosmetic to cover it up.

      When it hits the fan the powers that be will need a safe and secure place to stay until the “new world order” takes over. Rumors flying around that our gov. buying up huge amounts of food, etc. For themselves? For us? Been thinking for a while that there will be a major (planned) disaster that will finish us off. Worries me!! Been thinking for a while that there will not be a 2012 election. Disaster will happen before that to be sure no new people get into office. My husband thinks I’m nuts and maybe I am but, when certain people (I guess you know who I mean) stop being seen on tv and in public like they love to do I’m gonna start looking for everything to hit the fan!!! Hope we are ready enough to survive it all.
