Content Warning: Graphic Video Shows Women Gunned Down in Ivory Coast

ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast (AP) — A video obtained by The Associated Press on Friday shows how women were gunned down by soldiers backing Ivory Coast’s strongman in an incident that has exposed the extent of army abuse and prompted a shockwave of criticism.

The grainy footage was shot by a cameraman working for an opposition television station whose producer gave the AP permission to disseminate the footage. It captures the minutes before the attack Thursday in the troubled Abobo neighborhood where thousands of women took part in an all-women march demanding the departure of Laurent Gbagbo. At least six women were killed.

In the video, which was also posted on YouTube, a set of successive booms is heard as women wave branches in the air in protest. The crowd of hundreds scatters as screaming is heard. Then the cameraman pans over the collapsed bodies of at least four women. The head of one of them has been torn off and people rush to cover it was a piece of cloth. Another who is still alive tries to lift herself up and collapses in her own blood.

EDITOR’S NOTE: While this edited version of the video is not quite as graphic as the AP story describes, it is highly disturbing.  A strong content warning applies.

Everyone seems to be at the same point as far as the inevitability of it happening here. Funny, who would have thought it could happen 25 years ago. It’s been quetly building and is now finally coming to a head. But if SOMEhow we knock it back this time (through peacefull means of course), there’s so much in place now within the indoctrination of our children to the singleminded politicians with one goal in mind. It WILL happen here, just a matter of time. Once they get the only means we have of protest (our right to keep and bear arms) it will be all over for the United States of America.

They are setting the stage for that right now Zman. At the UN level and at our street level like in Illinois where they want to publish guns owners names and addresses. Well if I had NO gun I would be upset as the crims now know whos home will be armed and whos will not. Supposing your a good ******* who does not believe in guns then guess your the one who would be more apt to take to the streets over the issue and demand that all guns be confiscated for the safety of all concerned. They are creating the very issue right before our eyes where no issue existed before. Make no mistake, guns is the key to our liberty and this is why we have been able to maintain it for as long as we have. They the US Gov has always been in check over our right to bear arms but instead of attacking it to much directly they’ve whittled away at what makes us want to bear arms in the first place. Lulling us into complacency and dependence. We have cops who can handle almost any given situation and a law for everything…no need for us to have guns. Now they are after the Cops guns too because if they want full control, they would have to worry about all those patriots that fill up the police ranks.

You guys discredit everyone here at the Blaze.
The Ivory Coast is NOT surrounded by 75% water. You write nonsense. The shots you see are of a huge square with apartment buildings on the periphery. Just a few neighborhoods away there are huge neighborhoods which look very much like an American suburb, just with undulated roofing is all. The Ivory Coast is still very poor on the wide scale, and the lower classes vastly outnumber the rich, but the middle class there is larger than much of West Africa, and it’s growing.
Jack, you racist pig, get your ludicrous comments off this site.
As Ivorians are granted the freedoms to produce these things, they will expand miraculously, as did the US.

This is unbelievable footage and indicative of the world’s sad state. Interesting note, in a similar video where men were present, a man in the crowd mentions that since they are unarmed the government has the upper hand. If we allow ourselves to be disarmed by our government, you can see the results. Unarmed peacefully demonstrating women carrying palm branches brutally killed in the streets. Repressive governments lack any conscience.

      Drbage,
Thanks for the awesome and in-depth context. I was there for a couple of years myself, and got to witness the seeds of this conflict. Coupled with the studies I have done, I add my stamp, humbly, of certification. You know EXACTLY what you’re talking about!
Houphouet-Boigny had is own troubles as a dictator, but was generally benevolent and was perceived as such by the people, with few exceptions. His policy of mixing education was matched in the military, where he purposely mixed up leadership and rank-and-file so that units with affiliated ethnicities would be less likely to act based on ethnic interests, and more likely to act in national interests.
What‘s interesting about the Ivory Coast is that it’s when the next dictator (Henri Konan Bédié) tried to solve his first and only real electoral challenge (not long after the death of H-B and the IMF policy to stop loaning to dictators with a single-party system) by torquing up NATIONALIST rhetoric (Ivoirité), that the nationalizing work H-B had done was UNDONE, and things collapsed into ethnic-affiliation arguments (like IS Alassane Ouattara Ivorian enough or not–remember the Constitution of the IC was ALTERED to specifically exclude HIM, by stating ONLY people who could prove BOTH parents were Ivorian coulud run for president).

OK, the video is on youtube. And it’s actually a step down from what the French did with Sniper rifles on top of their Embassy in the same place. They weren’t even protesting, but sitting in the grass outside of the embassy. Head shot. Head shot. Head shot. They even blew a water bottle out of one guys hand.

This is bad, but they were protesting in front of opposing military forces. If you know a little history of the region you know that it’s not a good idea. Terrible tragedy though.

You’re ABSOLUTELY right Thoreau. Just a few short years ago the French DID snipe at a peaceful protest just a few neighborhoods closer to the Lagoon there in Abidjan. There was live fire from helicopters at the same event. That was partly in retaliation for Gbagbo attacking the French, though. This time it’s Gbagbo firing on political opponents. The French are laughing at this, because they know it‘s another nail in his own political coffin and they didn’t even have to do the dirty work this time.

Sacred? Pledging allegiance to the U.N. is to pledge allegiance to the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) because the OIC is a group of 57 Muslim majority nations that holds the largest voting bloc in the U.N. In 1990, the OIC adopted the Cairo Declaration on Human Rights in Islam, which overtly dictates that Islam is the only legitimate religion. The Cairo Declaration is bloated with hypocritical vanity and double standards. Pierce with loopholes, it is a manifesto declaring that Islamic Shari’ah Law is the only true source of human rights. Article Two of the declaration shows the ambiguity of the OIC’s Orwellian use of words and its plan for non-Muslims.

      (c) The preservation of human life throughout the term of time willed by God is a duty prescribed by Shari’ah
      (d) Safety from bodily harm is a guaranteed right. It is the duty of the state to safeguard it, and it is prohibited to breach it without a Sharia-prescribed reason.”

The OIC and its allied organizations have aggressively engaged in efforts to expand Islamic law in the West. The OIC declaration confirms that the U.N. resolution would adhere to Islamic Shari’ah law, which legalizes discrimination against women and non-Muslims, criminalizes free speech, freedom of religion, and freedom of conscience. Is this why the Pledge of Allegiance is no longer said in American public schools?

      Stagger,

I second you post on the Cairo Declaration (at least the modified Islamic form which is different from the original 1943 version) From wikipedia: (I know…not always a good source):

The UNHDR has been criticised by different people. Mainly Islamic countries have pointed out that its understanding is mainly that of Christians or Jews. Muslims could not implement certain parts of the declaration, without trespassing islamic law.[1] On 30 June 2000, Muslim nations that are members of the Organization of the Islamic Conference[2] officially resolved to support the Cairo Declaration on Human Rights in Islam,[3] an alternative document that says people have “freedom and right to a dignified life in accordance with the Islamic Shari’ah”.[4]

I‘m quite sure it won’t. HUGE differences in cause and effect, and nature of government.
But one element to look REALLY closely at: the Ivory Coast used to be like the US of West Africa in terms of peace, stability, and prosperity (like 1960-1990-ish). During that time they encouraged MASSIVE immigration without regard to background checks or anything. About 25% of the current population is immigrant there. The US has a huge backlash against illegal immigration when there is around HALF of that here…Points to ponder…

      Robert,
I said “almost racist” for a reason. Steer clear of terms like “jungle savages” unless you want that card played. Foreign aid DOES get lost in corrupt hands. And I’m glad you agree that the people are innocent and have the potential, if just allowed the freedom, to succeed just the same as America could, can, and did. The truth doesn’t hurt me. The truth to be learned here is that tyrants do evil things. As long as you agree Gbagbo is the savage because of his ACTIONS, we have little argument. I just object to “jungle savage” as a cliché describing Africa in general. That’s NOT the truth about Africa. Take it from a PhD in the area (me!)

I guess you missed the part that I said “My prayers to the innocent victims” so race is out of question .
The term of jungle savages was addressed to the dictators & their thugs .We both know very well how cruel they can get .
The problem in Africa & other nations too is when they get rid of a dictator they bring in another fresh dictator , the only successful change from dictatorship into democracy happened in East Europe .
Africa needs democracy & the tribes needs to stop fighting & turn their focus to education & women’s rights .

doesn’t matt, I’ve seen it before. Africa is a unique problem. They get a leader that tells them things will be beter and as soon as he is in power, he starts robbing the treasury and killing opposition. It’s tribal. “We killed all those poeple cause they are not the same tribe as us and we have been at war with them for a thousand years” Look at the killing Darfur, same thing, they just lie and say its civil war. Look at the blood diamond trouble. Same thing “I want power…”
We can’t apply western style democracy on those countries so in a since the poster was right about not being far along in evolution. It’s the same way in the middle east. You CAN’T have a western style leader, it’s too tribal (read backwards) to work. A very strong , ruthless person has to run the show or nothing will get done. Saddam was an ass but at least the country ran. Same in Africa, democracy western style isn’t going to work till they at least come into the 20TH century.

So much unnecessary bloodshed to depose a dictator. This expert in Ivorian society wishes Gbagbo would let go, and prays the ADO (Alessane Ouattara) these women are chanting in favor of, will prove to be a leader of healing for the country. If anyone would like to know more about the nature and roots of this conflict, don’t hesitate to ask. My PhD covers this area of the world.

      Sick!
      No warning shots!
      No tear gas!
      No conscience!
Just live tank mortars into the crowd (sorry, not a firearms expert, but those booms were NOT small arms)
      And then they drive off.
The UN IS acting in the Ivory Coast. They have made a perimeter around the new Pres‘s residence and are preventing the old dictator’s forces from moving in. The UN is also starving Gbagbo of funds and freezing foreign accounts.
This is what they call action.

Don’t go off the deep end on us there, TX. The Ivory Coast is still working out the aftermath of a 30+ year dictator and single party rule. They’re holding it together remarkably well considering the track record of the rest of Africa as longtime dictators fall/die off. We’ve got a country divided by political difference, and the poles are getting stronger, but the checks and balances which keep the military’s power out of the hands of a true dictator like this are still working here, and I have faith that we’ll continue to be a responsible country in that regard. This is a transition of power gone wrong in the Ivory Coast, NOT a revolution like in Egypt or Libya, keep in mind.
there’s so much still RIGHT about America, don’t give up on us yet. Prepare for the worst, of course, but act in faith, not in fear.

What kind of racist ARE you. This has NOTHING to do with evolution, or maybe you think all the white liberals in Wisconsin are not similar at all to these protesters?
This is about a people who are NOT FREE, who are just as unlimited in potential as any Americans. The only evolution that abandoned these people is the kind that would free them from dictators. And unless you aren’t up on American history (which I doubt you are), American government has formed an EXCEPTION to the normal evolution of tyranny in the world.

I truly do not understand some of the comments here. What do you think when a society turns its back on the true God of the people… What do you think is going to happen… If People and Governments have lost the respect for human life itself ….this is going to continue all over the world…It is time to bend a knee and seek Gods forgiveness and ask Christ into your lives… as he says he is the only way to truth and light…..
This saddens me to see humans waste each other without a thought…. You think just because people do not believe in him… does not mean he is not there watching… HIS judgment will come one day MARK MY WORDS… ALL will see.

Hillary had offered Mr. Gbagbo a “well-paying“ teaching position if he would step down”…OF COURSE…how do you get tyrants to stop brutalizing their people?…By bring them to America and putting them in our universities…wonder if he’ll get Bill Ayers to write a book for him? Amazing!

Did anyone else on the Blaze know this? According to Mr. Gbagbo, “invisible terrorists” were responsible for this slaughter that took place on Thursday…

Sirah Drane, 41, who helped organize the march, said she was holding the megaphone and preparing to address the large crowd that had gathered at a traffic circle in Abobo. “That’s when we saw the tanks,” she said. “There were thousands of women. And we said to ourselves ‘They won’t shoot at women’…I heard a boom. They started spraying us…I tried to run and fell down. The others trampled me. Opening fire on unarmed women? It’s inconceivable.”

The United States has recognized Alassane Ouattara as the legitimate President of Ivory Coast and has asked Gbagbo to step down. According to allAfrica.com, Mr. Gbagbo received a letter from U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton sometime after the election, in which she offered him a well- paid teaching position at Boston University if he would cede power to Ouattara.
