Consider it being at the right place at the right time.
Ohio officer Joshua Campbell swung by a local Walgreen’s story to pick up footage of a robbery that occurred just hours earlier. While waiting in line to talk with the clerk, Campbell notices the man in front of him reach over the counter and start raiding the cash register. After taking a few seconds to process the unbelievable coincidence, he pulls his gun and steps in.
The footage is amazing, especially after the would-be bandit puts up a fight. Campbell, who at one point has a gun to the man’s head, has to eventually fling the man to the ground using some moves that would make some wrestling coaches very proud:

Posted on December 17, 2010 at 12:54pmA little police procedure for all you out there who criticize.
Report Post »The cop was right to draw his gun. There was a FELONY in progress.
The cop was alone no back up with a suspect he didn’t know was armed or unarmed.
Training teaches them to assume the latter for their own protection. goes double in the case of a felony.
this is where the cop got it right.
Where he got it wrong was the proximity to the suspect .
Being that close when making an arrest is dangerous with a gun cause like some one said if a perpetrator gets it away from you (ie knows what he’s doing) the cop is screwed.
that being said every situation is different and one cant always use “text book” techniques.
Again some of us are saying taser, Bullcop34 has it right they don‘t work through heavy clothing they don’t penetrate enough to go through it to attach to the skin.
one thing in the cops favor is during the struggle when the suspect repeatedly tried to go for the officers gun the cop holstered it so it would be less likely to be taken.
after that it was text book ie do what ever you can to affect the arrest. loved the part when the cop gabed the punks mask and dragged him to the ground with it.

Posted on December 17, 2010 at 1:20pmMoral of the story?
Don’t let guys dressed all in black with bandanas, masks, and hoods on in your store. Whatever happened to taking off “head gear” when a person walked into a building as a sign of respect and gratitude for the shelter that a home or business provides?

Posted on December 17, 2010 at 12:46pmThe only reason it went that far is because the guy knew the cop wouldn’t use his gun.

Posted on December 17, 2010 at 1:17pmAbsolutely right, but the cop should have stood off at a distance and given loud and clear orders for the man to restrain himself or face a bullet wound. He should have never gotten so close as to be able to put the gun to the man’s head.

Posted on December 17, 2010 at 12:20pmWhile I appreciate the officer having the stones to do what he did, you shouldn’t draw a gun unless you are prepared to use it. He needs some better training. He’s lucky that it ended the way it did, it could have gone badly.

Posted on December 17, 2010 at 11:59amPress release from the white house: “I don’t know – not having been there and not seeing all the facts – what role race played in that, but I think it’s fair to say, number one, any of us would be pretty angry; number two that the police acted stupidly in arresting somebody when there was already proof that they were committing a robbery. This is why we need wealth distribution.”
Lucky the cop realized it was a robbery. He had no clue at first.
I can see a lawsuit over this. “Accused Robber Claims Police Brutality and Violation of Rights.” Eric Holder is to lead the charge.

Posted on December 17, 2010 at 12:15pmRestraint???? Are you fricking kidding me???? Try stupidity. The cop had the upper hand and when the guy started fighting with him, EVENTHOUGH THE COP HAD HIS GUN DRAWN AND WAS POINTING IT AT HIS HEAD, this douche bad POS still fought with him!! The cop was WAY more than justified to shoot this guy, period. The guy, through his own actions of FIGHTING WITH A UNIFORMED POLICE OFFICER WITH A GUN POINTED TO YOUR HEAD WHILE COMMITTING A CRIME clearly shows the total disregard for law. Restraint?

Posted on December 17, 2010 at 1:14pm@Bullcop, I assume that you are a police officer and used to aiming guns at people without firing them. I however come from a different school of thought, the Marine school. My job for my last year in the Corps was as a range safety officer/range SNCOIC/ and combat marksmanship instructor, and I can tell you that you never point a weapon at anything or person that you do not intend to shoot. You also never get within close combat range with a weapon such as a gun, any gun. He should have been taught to exercise his authority more wisely and used his man voice to shock the criminal into following clear orders with the express penalty of a 9mm to the chest if he tried to flee or resist. It is not rocket science, but you do have to understand human nature and how to communicate. From what I saw in the video, the officer was not giving clear, or loud instructions but was instead relying on a freaked out perp to know what he wanted him to do when he pushed the barrel of a service pistol into his temple. No person, no matter who they are, can be expected to act in a manner approaching sanity when they feel a gun pressed to their head. Was the robber in the wrong? ABSOFREAKINLUTELY! Did the cop do something entirely stupid and threatening to his own life as well as the lives of others nearby? YES!

Posted on December 17, 2010 at 11:07amThat cop was lucky. I know a move that would have disarmed that cop. You never get that close with a gun drawn. Taser, taser, taser. It can be used as non lethal force. He never should have drawn that gun.
Report Post »Bullcop34
Posted on December 17, 2010 at 11:58amShould have drawn the gun but should have positioned himself between the perp and the door. Agreed about putting the gun to the head that close without the perp on the floor. The cop could have hit him in the leg with an asp or slammed him to the floor backwards but holstering your gun mid fight is about the dumbest thing you can do. Apparently you also don‘t know just what a Taser can and can’t do. They can incapacitate you but the CANNOT shoot through jackets, especially a thick one like the perp had on.

Posted on December 17, 2010 at 1:03pmI agree with you guys, I was taught to never point a gun at anything you don’t intend to shoot. If I pull a gun on someone they deserve to know that as soon as the sights line up I pull the trigger. He should have used his verbal and physical presence to order the man to the ground and had him cuff an ankle to the opposite wrist while waiting for backup to arrive. BTW, what would be yout immediate reaction to a gun to your head? Mine would have been an immediate grab for the gun, holding on tight so as to lock the action preventing a second possible shot and twisting like hell. Stupid move on the cops part. Do they still teach anything to police?

Posted on December 17, 2010 at 11:59amTruth is, our entire nation has been dumbed down. Take a look at YouTube once in while and read the posts. The spelling and grammer are an indication of how well our education works. A fifty dollar word ten years ago is a thousand dollar word today. People just don’t spend time educating themselves or their children anymore. It’s really sad.

Posted on December 17, 2010 at 12:56pmNo, the police, like us, are not allowed to use fatal force to protect property anymore. Once the man started to struggle the trigger should have been pulled because of the potential for harm to the officer had the tables turned. What the officer did that was a huge mistake was get close to the man. He should have drawn the weapon and ordered the man to the ground and had him cuff one wrist to the opposite ankle until backup arrived. Putting a gun to a man’s temple, no matter how wrong his actions are, will put him into either fight or flight mode. Neither is good for the application of justice. This stems from my stronly held belief that you do not point a gun at anything you do not intend to shoot. This goes as well for police as anyone, it used to be that if a gun were pulled shots were fired, now it is almost s.o.p. to unsnap the strap on every traffic stop. It is this overuse of the gun that has degraded its effectiveness.

Posted on December 17, 2010 at 6:32pmAfter reviewing the link from whitetail, I would have to agree with what the officers actions were. This is not the first merry-go-round for this suspect, he was trying to get the officers gun while they were fighting, a common tactic practiced by inmates while in prison.
Report Post »It’s very easy to Monday morning quarterback someone like this, but you learn from your mistakes, unfortunately, when it comes to the police one mistake could be your last. THIS OFFICER DID THE MAIN THING, HE SURVIVED AND WENT HOME AFTER THE SHIFT. I do agree with one thing, there sure was a lot of patrons willing to assist the officer!
SgtB
Posted on December 19, 2010 at 11:53pmTo those who commented on me saying that I was essentially acting as a monday morning quarterback, I only have this to say. I saw the video that was presented in its entirety, and seeing as how I have extensive training on the proper way to take a prisoner forcibly, by way of USMC training and years of practice and even teaching the techniques I believe that I am qualified to say that what the officer did was utterly stupid. Sure, his heart was racing and his adrenalin was at an all time high, but that in no way means that he should not learn from this very stupid and risky mistake. I hope that he doesn’t read what alot of you are writing on here because then he may think that that was how he should have reacted and he will make no effort to learn from this. In the end, another mistake like this could cost his life. If he would have drawn his weapon to the ready at a distance and given clear and unmistakable orders to the crook then he would have had much greater control of the situation. If the robber had turned around with a gun he would have had clear aim and an advantage on the trigger, if the robber had tried to flee, then he could have shot him anyway (or at least I think he should be able to). Long story short, mistakes were made and I point these things out so that no one gets the wrong idea that this officer was 100% by the book, SOP, or any other way of saying right.
