Atlanta police have arrested a man they say was stealing cars out of driveways and selling them for scrap metal.
Ameen Jones cruised neighborhoods looking for run down cars and would call a recycling company to come pick them up, according to police. Once the car was picked up, Jones would collect payment for the scrap metal.
Of course, you probably don’t need to be told that none of this was done with the consent of the people who actually owned the cars.
The recycling company eventually notified the police after “noticing a pattern that seemed like something illegal was going on,” CBS Atlanta reports.
“It was very good of them to notify us of this,” an Atlanta officer told the Georgia Daily News. “They saw his pattern in the past and when they were contacted by him again they immediately realized something wasn’t right with this and they contacted us.”
But how did Jones manage to get away with these scheme for so long?
“Police say the reason he got away with this in the past is that if a vehicle is 12 years or older then you do not need a title to sell it to a scrap yard,” the CBS report adds.
Watch the Fox Atlanta report:
Jones was finally caught near the home of Marilyn Morris, a would-be victim of his recycling scheme.
“They work but I still don’t have the money to have them fixed,” said Morris. “I know everybody has hard times but being greedy don’t help you…Bad as I need some money, if anyone was going to sell them, it would be me.”
Jones is in custody and could be facing felony charges.

Posted on May 22, 2012 at 7:39pmI had my 1991 Taurus SHO stolen from me except mine was my daily driver for 10 years, I did all my own work to the car and slowly did many upgrades. Then one morning it was gone, the only thing left was a mark on the asphault the tow truck left. Im sure my car was sold for scrap, stolen back in 2008 this was when the price for scrap steel was $400 a ton so many cars that were parked outside were picked up in the middle of night and sold to the scrap yard. I still miss my SHO and I am glad the caught this guy but in reality they wont do anything to him at all but feed him cloth him and give him cool air to relax in. He might have to pay court cost, that all!

Posted on May 22, 2012 at 6:23pmJones is in custody and could be facing felony charges …There it is in a nut shell …The year 2012 …The age of the great Obama transformation…The guy …Could be… Meaning he will get a free at taxpayer expense lawyer who will to move quickly along because of the long list of morons make a quick deal to slap the “POOR” guys hands because of the evils society has place on him. So “Could be” will turn into a short stay with fellow gang members and of course a job and expenses for a parole office, parole officer, his car the utilities and of course special counseling and education …All that today equals ..Could be….

Posted on May 22, 2012 at 4:30pmState & Federal laws require a clean certificate of title before you can sell a vehicle for scrap. The scrap metal company that bought these cars should be held liable as well.

Posted on May 22, 2012 at 5:10pmThey also melt down valuable metals that are stolen so they can’t be identified. It‘s not hard to make a blast furnace for this I’ve seen them in action.

Posted on May 22, 2012 at 7:32pmYou don’t need the title if the vehicle is over 12 years old. Local junk yard told me that they would accept a signed statement saying I was the rightful owner if I couldn’t find the title.

Posted on May 22, 2012 at 7:39pmI talked with the New State Department of Motor Vehicles earlier this year. You can license a car with a lien on the title. If the lien holder comes down on you, you have to give the car back at your loss.

Never mind that they were buying and receiving stolen merchandise. I guess that’s what having a business license and paying taxes affords you in Atlanta. If I had bought one I‘m sure I’d have been charged. On the other hand they probably won‘t recoup their monies and they’ll probably lose the merchandise. I wonder if the victims will be compensated?
Report Post »blackyb
Posted on May 22, 2012 at 3:23pmIf not then, the state should have to reimburse him through a victim’s advocacy fund. If there is not one, then they should have some kind of fund that will take care of situations like this. This should never have happened. The state should reimburse those who lost the property and then make the perpetrator pay them or spend more time in prison.
