Cops: Man Tried to Rob Cafe by Threatening to…Spread His Staph Infection

A Pennsylvania man tried to rob an Internet gambling cafe by threatening to spread a staph infection, police say.

Fred L. Parker, 41, was charged with robbery and making terrorist threats after he allegedly walked into Lucky’s Internet Cafe Monday and started touching the walls and machines, claiming he had MRSA, the Sharon Herald reported. MRSA is an antibiotic-resistant bacteria that is highly contagious and can be fatal.

Sharon Police Chief Mike Menster told the newspaper Parker then approached the cashier and demanded money, telling him that if he didn’t cooperate, he’d touch him and infect him.

“It’s our first case of robbery by threat of an infectious disease,” Menster said.

Parker said he’d walk away if the cashier gave him money, police said. The clerk refused and Parker left anyway.

He was arrested a short time later based on a description from the clerk and from customers.

He was taken to the county jail after failing to post bond and will have a preliminary hearing Feb. 1, according to the Herald.

MRSA stands for Methicillin Resistant Staph Aureus. Staph Aureus is a normal flora of the oral-pharynx. With the over use, and sometimes inappropriate use of antibiotics, this normal bug has become resistant (not easily killed by regular antibiotics, and now requires more expensive and stronger antibiotics to kill it).
There is also a difference between an active MRSA infection, and someone being colonized with MRSA. Being colonized means that the bacteria is sitting in your nose or throat just going along for the ride–just like normal Staph Aureus does.
The reason it first showed up in hospitals is because 1) hospitals are full of sick people, and 2) they do work hard to keep things clean. Just like any living thing, when faced with destruction, they adapt.
MRSA is not an unknown creature from outer space, it has adapted and been with us all along.

TB is still rare, and to get it you have to practically live with the person who has it. because it is droplet spread. MRSA you have to come into direct contact with on the skin. AIDS you have to get stuck with a needle, or have sex with someone who has it. I think someday we will all be walking around waring full body condoms, with a gas masks, but not me LOL.

The robber did not bother the man behind the cash register because he knew that the robber caught his MSRA at that cafe. He had immunity.

MRSA has been around a long time. Its part of the nonsomical acquired infections. For what its worth if you get hit with it again its usually less severe[provided you are well to begin with and not back in the hospital or very immune challenged].C.Difficle is another one of those bugs.Very difficult to treat in some cases. That to is hospital acquired. The ultra clean enviroment of the hospital actually allows these bugs to flourish. They are in fact some of the hardiest and nastiest bugs around.Extremaphores

The only one I see as having been purposely cooked up might just be those girls disease. Most of the bugs you described have existed and will exist naturally.Drug resistant TB’s rise is partly due to overuse of antibiotics.MRSA has been around for quite a while as well. Its normally found in the hospital enviroment. The old term for MRSA was cronic follucilitis.Atleast in many medical settings.

I wonder why the reporters failed to mention that MRSA is everywhere, on every surface, and even on the nostrils of 25% of the population?

Can a person really be a terrorist if he threatens to make things more like what they already are? Could be that he was simply exercising free speech, if all he wished to do was to make a point.

Anyone remember when people were afraid to use pay telephones or look before sitting in a theatre because people with AIDS were rumoured to leave blood on needles and stick them in the change return in the payphones and stick them in the seats (with a note of course to let you know you were now infected with HIV/AIDS

Yep, I remember that. But unlike HIV, MRSA can be passed very easily. It’s a nasty bug that can do a lot of damage to an unaware public. HIV on the other hand has to be trasmitted through sharing needles, sexual contact, medical instrumentation that has not been properly autoclaved, etc. I worked in a hospital laboratory for many years and know first hand that I would rather draw blood from a person with HIV rather than enter a hospital room, even though using proper Personal Protective Equipment, of a patient with MRSA. I would NEVER not perform my duties as a phlebotomist no matter what disease the patient may have, but I ALWAYS took great care with MRSA patients. Same with TB patients.
