Cops Name ‘Strong Person of Interest’ in Park Ranger Killing: An Iraq War Vet With ‘PTSD Issues’

Iraq Veteran Benjamin Colton Barnes Named Person of Interest in Mt. Rainier Shooting

Benjamin Barnes, who has been named a strong "person of interest" in the shooting death of a park ranger at Mt. Rainier.

MOUNT RAINIER NATIONAL PARK, Wash. (The Blaze/AP) — About 125 people were evacuated overnight from the visitors center at Mount Rainier National Park as authorities searched the snowy terrain for an armed gunman suspected of killing a park ranger.

About 150 officers converged on the mountain park after ranger Margaret Anderson was shot to death Sunday morning, and searchers used an aircraft with heat-sensing capabilities to hunt from the skies.

Authorities believe the gunman was still in the woods, with weapons.

Pierce County Sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said that Benjamin Colton Barnes, a 24-year-old believed to have survivalist skills, was a “strong person of interest” in the slaying.

A parks spokesman said Barnes was an Iraq war veteran, and the mother of his child had alleged he suffered from post-traumatic stress following his deployments.

Barnes was involved in a custody dispute in Tacoma in July, during which the toddler’s mother sought a temporary restraining order against him, according to court documents. In an affidavit, the woman wrote that Barnes was suicidal and possibly suffered from PTSD after deploying to Iraq from 2007 to 2008. She said he gets easily irritated, angry and depressed and keeps an arsenal of weapons in his home.

The Seattle Times has more about the concerns raised by the child’s mother:

In July, the mother, Nicole Santos, petitioned the court for an amended parenting plan and restraining order, citing threats of violence by Barnes.

“I just feel there is so much instability,” Santos wrote in a July 19 petition seeking to restrict Barnes’ access to the child.

“I think it is important for the court to know that Benjamin was also deployed to Iraq in 2007-2008 and has possible PTSD issues,” she wrote, referring to post-traumatic stress disorder. “He gets easily irritated, angry, depressed and frustrated.

“Benjamin also has a lot of weapons in his home, such as, firearms and knives,” Santos wrote. “I am fearful of what Benjamin is capable of with the small arsenal he has in his home and his recent threats of suicide.”

Barnes was also a suspect in the early Sunday morning shooting of four people at a house party south of Seattle, police said.

Sgt. Cindi West, King County Sheriff’s spokeswoman, said late Sunday that Barnes was connected to an early-morning shooting at a New Year’s house party in Skyway, south of Seattle that left four people injured, two critically. That shooting happened about 3 a.m. and stemmed from an argument over a gun.

Iraq Veteran Benjamin Colton Barnes Named Person of Interest in Mt. Rainier Shooting

In this photo provided by the Pierce County Sheriff's Dept., Benjamin Colton Barnes, is shown with a tattoo that reads "Pride, Envy, Gluttony, Lust."

West said three people fled the scene. Two were located, and West said authorities were trying to find Barnes and had been in contact with his family, trying to have them convince him to “come to the police and tell his side of the story” in the Skyway shooting.

“We do have a very hot and dangerous situation,” Troyer said.

Teams were assessing new tactical plans that they planned to put into place at daylight, he said.

Safety concerns prompted authorities to keep the tourists quarantined at a visitors center as the manhunt unfolded. Early Monday morning, officers escorted them out of the park in groups of vehicles over the span of a few hours.

Crews had initially planned to keep everyone in a basement with guards. But it was determined to be “better to do it (evacuate) under the cover of darkness than daylight,” Troyer said.

Evacuee Dinh Jackson, a mother from Olympia, who came to the mountain to sled with family and friends, told The Associated Press that officials ordered people to hurry into the lodge after the shooting.

Jackson said officials had everyone get on their knees and place hands behind their heads as they went through the building, looking at faces to make sure the gunman was not among them.

“That was scary for the kids,” she said.

Michael Wall, an elementary school teacher from Puyallup, spent the morning hiking with his son. They didn’t find out about the violence until returning.

Wall said he was impressed by how staff members and visitors kept each other comfortable with food and conversation.

“It was calm, cool, easygoing,” Wall said. “I didn’t notice any tenseness or terseness.”

At Mount Rainier around 10:20 a.m. Sunday, the gunman had sped past a checkpoint to make sure vehicles have tire chains, which are sometimes necessary in snowy conditions, Bacher said. One ranger began following him while Anderson, a 34-year-old mother of two young children who was married to another Mount Rainier park ranger, eventually blocked the road to stop the driver.

Before fleeing, the gunman fired shots at both Anderson and the ranger that trailed him, but only Anderson was hit, Bacher said. Anderson would have been armed, as she was one of the rangers tasked with law enforcement, Bacher said. Troyer said she was shot before she had even exited the vehicle.

About 150 officers, including officials from the Washington State Patrol, U.S. Forest Service and FBI, were on the mountain Sunday.

Tactical responders wearing crampons and snowshoes pursued what appeared to be the gunman’s tracks in the snow, Troyer said. Those tracks went into creeks and other waterways, making it more difficult for crews to follow.

“He’s intentionally trying to get out of the snow,” Troyer said.

Authorities recovered his vehicle, which had weapons and body armor inside, Troyer said.

A SWAT team was able to remove Anderson’s body from the mountain late Sunday night, with a procession of law enforcement vehicles escorting her remains away.

The park would remain closed Monday, officials announced late Sunday.

Park superintendent Randy King said Anderson had served as a park ranger for about four years. King said Anderson’s husband also was working as a ranger elsewhere in the park at the time of the shooting.

“It’s just a huge tragedy – for the family, the park and the park service,” he said.

Adam Norton, a neighbor of Anderson’s in the small town of Eatonville, said the ranger’s family moved in about a year ago. He said they were not around much, but when they were, Norton would see Anderson outside with her girls.

“They just seemed like the perfect family,” he said.

The town of about 3,000 residents, which is a logging community overlooking Mount Rainier, is very close knit, he said.

“It’s really sad right now,” Norton said. “We take care of each other.”

It has been legal for people to take loaded firearms into Mount Rainier since 2010, when a federal law went into effect that made possession of firearms in national parks subject to state gun laws.

The shooting occurred on an unseasonably sunny and mild day. The park, which offers miles of wooded trails and spectacular vistas from which to see 14,410-foot Mount Rainier, draws between 1.5 million and 2 million visitors each year.

The Longmire station served as headquarters when the national park was established in 1899. Park headquarters have moved but the site still contains a museum, a hotel, restaurant and gift shop, which are open year-round.

I agree with lube. PTSD is just another reason for shrinks to make money. I have never had to kill a man, but I have been shot at. I know plenty of people who have had to kill. My grandpa lost count while he fought in WWII. We are just trying to demonize our vets like we did after vietnam. anyone consider this guy joined the military because he had a propencity to violence, rather than assuming the military turned him violent? Maybe (I would put money on it) this guy was a nut job to start with.

@ Caveman, your screen name fits you perfectly. PTSD is not some label that someone wishes to wear or a condition to have. I know, I have PTSD. There is still a lot to be learned. We do know that the younger a person is exposed to traumatic events, the more likely they are to be affected by PTSD. Not everyone exposed to trauma ends up with PTSD, no more than all people exposed to a cold end up having one. To say one had a propensity to violence before entering the military is speculative and ignorant.

It is also extremely difficult to “fake” the symptoms. Every year thousands of former vets show up at VAs saying they think they have PTSD. Before anyone is given the diagnosis, there is quite a criteria to be met.

What is concerning is that people think that all people that have PTSD are suicidal and/or homicidal. This is but one of many symptoms. Anger is a symptom, so is social withdrawal, lack of interest in activities, flattened emotional affect, depression, flash backs, hallucinations, being hyper-vigilant, insomnia and exaggerated startle response. Just reading some of the actions that are occurring makes a good case that the veteran has serious PTSD issues

However, let me be clear. I am not excusing his behavior, I am understanding what has possibly led him to commit a heinous act. We should pray for the ranger and her family, but if it can be found that his PTSD contributed to this event, we should also realize that this man is another victim

I do not mean to make lite of the horrors our servicemen and women see in battle. When we read a news story hinting that the acts this fellow perpetrated are because of ptsd minimizes the trauma experienced by the above mentioned people. Have you ever had the desire to shoot up a party and then go on the run and shoot anyone that gets in your way? I would venture to guess no. this guy however did. That is where I draw the conclusion that he was violent and messed up before he joined the service and that is why he deals with his demons in the way he does. From infancy until I was adopted I and my sister were abused sevearly by foster parents including water boarding (yes if I wet the bed they would hold my head under a sink filled with scalding water for minutes. I still have nightmares about that at the age of 37. I have 4 children of my own now and have never moved to violence towards them. Others who abuse their children however blame their own abuse as the reason instead of themselves. If you blame this guys actions on ptsd you are then saying that you yourself are a risk. I don’t even know you but I do not think that is the case. I am willing to bet that while you have issues that you are working through you are otherwise a well adjusted and “safe” person to be around.

to retribution, sociopaths are verry adept at hiding who they are. I have seen the military entry process (I enlisted in the marine delayed entry program but never graduated high school). Not hard to get in. How else to you explain people like the fort hood shooter, or the serviceman who fragged a tent full of soldiers getting in? How do you explain the gang proliferation in the military? I hate to say it but some people start out with a screw loose.

PAVNVET, I am sorry you are suffering from PTSD. I wonder if the way children have been raised in the last 30 to 40 years is having an impact. Children are awarded for just showing up, praised for normal good behavior, see all manner of violence without consequences in the media, then when confronted with the vile underbelly of humanity, have a hard time processing it without internal trauma. I would also be interested to know if the tougher ghetto kids, and gang kids do better than so called middle class kids. I have no idea, but the questions come to mind. Do people with higher moral values have a tougher time? Lots of questions, no answers.

I find that the comments here are absolutely ignorant of what kind of person develops PTSD. If I was “a well adjusted and a safe person to be around” then I probably wouldn’t be receiving a 100% disability for PTSD. Intelligence, and family background have nothing to do with why someone has PTSD. I know veterans that have doctorate degrees, as well as former business owners and ordinary folks that are 100% PTSD disabled .

Suicidal and Homicidal ideation is a very real part of severe PTSD. However, medication and therapy may help. Often people with PTSD seek self destructive avenues of coping, such as drinking or drug use. Others will engage in high risk activities. Other ways to cope include isolation and avoidance of others (my personal issue, along with anger management and many of the other symptoms I listed above).

As far as help, yes, someone must admit they need help. Although there are involuntary commitments. They also need to know that help is available. The VA is doing a good job reaching out to younger vets. However, reaching every vet and then providing care is not where it needs to be. VA personal testifying in front of Congress as recently as 2 months ago said that there is a lack of skilled professionals to treat PTSD in all areas of the country.

As a personal note, I was only diagnosed in 2009 after living with it for 40 years, 2 marriages and 40 jobs. It is very hurtful to hear people give unfounded opinions of PTSD.

Pavnvet I am sorry if my comment upset you. I first want to thank you for your service to our country. You kept us safe and paid a high price. I lived my whole life(until 17 yr old) on military bases. Like i said my dad is in the US Air Force. I am very proud of his service. I know and have known soldiers with severe PTSD and have helped talk them down during an episode. I can’t imagine what that is like in my wildest dreams. You are very correct that there are many with doctorates and degrees that deal with this very real illness. Mine was from 9/11 which is very different from a service member’s experiences. I am on anxiety meds to help me sleep and for when i have panic attacks. PTSD is not something a shrink made up to get money for whoever was so callous. It truly is a very real illness that can shape and transform a life dramatically. I can tell you personally here in CT where i live if i go to one town that has the VA hospital. I will see alot of vets in wheelchairs and walking around living homeless and it breaks my heart. I try to help them out when I see them. whether it’s some money, a cup of coffee and a meal and someone to talk to. To be honest if i won the lottery I would love to take a building renovate it and make it into low rent housing for soldiers. i’d even try to help those that cannot pay much of anything but maybe have a valuable skill they can do like carpentry or chef. Anything that gives them a positive feeling and their dignity back.

Agreed, if the guy had PTSD problems, the government that sent him there, would take care of him after he came back to make sure none of these kind of things would happen…Seems to me it’s the governments fault as much as it is

When I was discharged the government did nothing for me. They said go to the VA to get your dental work, I had to find a job. Now they say I make over 30 k a year so I cannot get VA benefits. What does my earnings have to do with benefits owed to all vets. Regardless, If he does not go to the VA and make his way through the byzantine maze of the bureaucracy he wont get help. Its easier on the government this way. We have the fortitude to make war , pay contractors, but not to care for the people who have served.

Actually, IMHBLO, government does know these kinds of problems can manifest in combat vets and that’s why they IGNORE them.

The DHS secretary submitted a report to the president almost immediately after being appointed that stated American veterans were prime suspects for and in terrorist activities. Remember that?

Now, do some math. DOJ and BATF suborn the transfer of weapons AND launder drug money for the cartels (just reported last week), secretary of state says government needs to confiscate weapons from law abiding Americans. POTUS signs National Defense Authorization Act a law that allows non governmental body to lock up Americans they “deem” to be terrorists without a trial and no release date, “with reservations” about several parts of the statute. Veterans diagnosed with PTSD, a potentially serious condition for themselves and those around them, don’t get the attention they most assuredly deserve. Hell, a DUI offender on probation gets more attention than a Vet with PTSD.

I’m no genius, but I can add. Now, I’m not saying there “IS” some plan to get this pig rolling toward a police state, but it seems awful strange, to me, that all of these things are being CULTIVATED by government and NOT being addressed.

I hate to ruin all the rationale and thoughtful speech craft, but I think the PTSD card is being vastly over played here. I’m a veteran of multiple deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, I have survival skills and I keep a large collection of numerous weapons in my home, and oh by the way I am currently in counseling for PTSD. With all those “warning signs” I have absolutely no desire to go around shooting places up or doing harm to myself or anyone for that matter. Besides all that I’m voting Ron Paul in November. Uh oh everybody, maybe just maybe he’s a nut and his political views, military service, or gun collection have nothing to do with it. Imagine that, a crazy person and nothing more…weird!

2addled I would like to say i think you misunderstood lube’s point. I suffer from PTSD myself. What lube is saying is he did have tours in Iraq and he never wanted to go around shooting innocent people. My father was in Vietnam and rarely talks about it. He saw his best friend die and I’m fairly certain he has PTSD just never mentions it and he would never shoot innocent people. What lube‘s point was that there are alot of people with PTSD that yes they have flashbacks and a hard time but that doesn’t cause them to run out and shoot innocent people.I think lube if i am correct is saying before everyone jumps to the conclusion that it was PTSD related maybe we should learn more about the guy. He may just be crazy or mentally ill and the PTSD plays no role in this. I am praying for the family of the ranger whose two little girls will never see their mommy again. I am praying for the poor people that their only “crime” is that they went to a new year’s eve party. Instead of enjoying the night with friends and family they were cruelly shot. I pray the critical patients pull through with no problems. May they have a speedy recovery. That goes as well for the other less seriously injured victims. May they catch this man before he harms another person. I ask this as I pray in your name God… Amen

      You are confused
your quote “He may just be crazy or mentally ill and the PTSD plays no role in this”

What I do find interesting is that if a muslim is involved in a tragedy such as this it takes forever for the public to know about him/her but since this guy is a vet info and photos appear rather quickly. This isn’t the first time that a bitter ex-wife used the same tactics to sick Federal agents on the man who battles with her over child custody. An easy way out for her – make her ex-husband disappear courtesy of government agents. Sickening. I wish I could believe her – but it’s much more believable that she has played into the Homeland Insecurity propaganda and used it to her advantage. Sort of like Nazi Germany when people turned friends and relatives over to the SS because they were angry with them….

The government forces of Servicemen and women into immoral wars where we have no business being, and tragedies like this are bound to happen. The man is still responsible for his actions and deserves the punishment he gets, but on top of that, every government official who voted for that immoral war should be tried and convicted of accessory charges. Bush should be tried not merely for the same charge of murder, but for violating the Constitution and promoting conquest.

Here’s another little hint for you. Those little R and D letters attached to politicians mean exactly nothing. They‘re there for morons who don’t have the brain capacity to learn what candidates stand for and it makes them feel (however stupidly) that they actually have a choice.

You’re simply not a very smart person.

If he truly is the man who perpetrated this murder and in fact an Iraq Vet, and has PTSD… I hope he gets the help he needs while serving a life sentence in prison, or up until the time he is executed… Military service and supposed PTSD not withstanding.

This guy meets the descriptors put out regarding potential domestic terrorists…ex military, survival skills, young white guy. We now have the ability to just order him killed based on suspicion. We do have the option of capturing him and putting him in jail without charges forever too. Remember, this is a battlefield here and we’re all combatants. Who needs a Constitution.

I agree with you. I had a cousin back in the 70′s who was shot and killed and his young daughter injured from a Vietnam Veteran at lake Summerville in Texas. He soon turned the gun on himself (Luckily). But something could have been done to prevent this.
Yes, this guy knew exactly what he was doing, but we cannot totally understand how the character breakdown comes into play.
I can remember my own Dad before vietnam, not to be the same Dad after vietnam.

My cousin is a national park ranger. This incident scared her and our family to death. I told her she needed to take a firearms course, buy a large caliber handgun and get certified for concealed carry. Armed rangers would help to put a stop to things like this.

Does anyone see an assault rifle in this picture? I see a shotgun and a pistol that you can’t hit anything with. I ams os sick of the medias ingnorence on firearms. I see a Rambo when I look at this Guy. He serves his country and returns to see his freedom was lost while he was fighting for it overseas instead of at home.

The rifle you see in the pic is a “sporterized” version of the AK-47 and is semi-auto, the “pistol” is either a mac-10 or mac-11, also semi-auto.

Let me guess he is NOT a regular church goer who has been imbued with the understanding of the value of human life. Also, are the other 150 park visitors safer with carrying their own firearms for protection against a crazed or evil gunman?? Progressive minds know the answer to that, but don’t want to admit it.

Pretty crappy photo-shop of him holding the Ak, and Mac 10…….This is what happens when politicians make military personnel disposable, its time we stop dumping our vets in the trash, and give them the help they need.

      @drago
Thats not a AK, it is a Saiga 12 gauge. It is just a semi automatic shotgun, built in Russia on the AK platform. It was inspired by Kalishnakov, and built at one of the first AK producing plants in Russia, IZHMASH. Just food for thought.

The rifle is a “sporterized” AK variant, from the segmented appearance of the magazine, most likely a Saiga 12-GA

Also if he had P.T.S.D. and they knew it some blame can go to the VA healthcare system that will be Obamacare . I wonder when his next appointment was scheduled six months or a year or did they listen at all.

It’s time to start holding people accountable for their own actions and stop blaming outside sources. What he did is his own choice, nobody forced him to do anything. Many programs are available for vets dealing with problems, such as One Source. Besides you can‘t give help to somebody that doesn’t want it. This is nobodies fault except the one who pulled the trigger.
