Cops Surround Deep Woods Bunker of ‘Gun-Toting Survivalist’ Wanted for Killing His Family (UPDATE: BODY FOUND)

NORTH BEND, Wash. (AP) — Authorities on Friday surrounded a deep woods bunker that they say belongs to a gun-toting survivalist suspected of killing his wife and daughter nearly a week ago.

Dozens of police officers surrounded the underground bunker in the Cascade foothills east of Seattle, after they pumped gas into the structure and saw movement inside.

Authorities said the bunker belongs to 41-year-old Peter A. Keller, who was described in court records as a loner who collected guns and had a survivalist mentality. They were waiting to see if the person in the bunker would surrender on his own.

King County Sheriff’s Sgt. Cindi West said evidence found in Keller’s home helped them find the structure Friday morning.

Officers were able to pinpoint the location after enhancing a blurry photograph they found on a hard drive left in an open safe in his house. The photo included a view from the bunker in which buildings in nearby North Bend were visible, along with a set of power lines.

Detectives were able to triangulate the rough area of the bunker and when combined with tips from people who had seen his faded red pickup truck parked at the trailhead, were confident they had the right area.

They sent two experienced trackers to the trail head and they were able to find tracks that appeared to have been made by someone carrying a heavy backpack.

They went into the woods at 5 a.m. Friday and could smell wood smoke from the wood stove in the bunker, even before they could see it.

Court documents said Keller was stockpiling supplies in the woods. He had not been seen since a Sunday fire at his North Bend-area home, where his wife and daughter were found shot to death.

An arrest warrant issued Wednesday for Keller accused him of two counts of first-degree murder and one count of first-degree arson.

The fire was stopped before the house burned down, and authorities said they found seven gasoline cans placed in different areas of the home.

The King County medical examiner has determined Kaylene Keller, 18, and her mother, Lynnettee Keller, 41, both died from gunshots to the head. Their bodies were found in their bedrooms.

Kaylene’s boyfriend told detectives that Peter Keller had shown him his gun collection and several large-caliber rifles and handguns, court documents said. The boyfriend, who was not identified, said Kaylene had told him her father took long hikes on the weekends and was stockpiling supplies at a fort in the woods.

Peter Keller withdrew $6,200 from a bank last week and told one of his co-workers at a computer refurbishing store in Preston that he might not return, according to court documents.

Officers with the SWAT team had spent Friday morning searching a popular hiking area known as Rattlesnake Ridge just outside North Bend. Deputies closed trails and roads leading into the area of dense trees and networks of hiking and biking trails. Sheriff’s vehicles dotted housing developments that abutted the ridge.

Sally Betts of Vashon Island had been hoping to hike Rattlesnake Ridge with her friends from the Renton Women’s Hiking Club, but drove off for another trail after learning of the search.

“We thought that Rattlesnake is so popular, he wouldn’t be there. He’s an outdoorsman, he’ll be off on the wilderness somewhere,” Betts said.

UPDATE: Authorities have found a body in the elaborate bunker, and it appears to be that of 41-year old Peter Keller.  Police say he likely died of a self-inflicted gunshot.

      Regardless of your feelings about Beck, Baikonur, the problem with your comments and logic is the ‘it’s someone else‘s fault’ mind set. I hope you really don’t believe anyone can be blamed for the actions of another. I gather as much information I can, make my own decisions and any action or inaction is my responsibility. If you really believe that, then I really feel sorry for you. If you can believe that the actions if one individual can be blamed on another, then you’ve already given up your free will. It doesnt matter if you believe in evolution or design, as both beliefs place humans in a position of responsibilty. We have the “gifts” of higher thought, reason and logic. These gifts require we take personal responsibilty of our actions. Please re-think your position on this. Anyone who tells you that ‘it’s not your fault‘ and ’someone else made you do it’ is using you. They are using their gifts to use others who are not using theirs. Most of us conservatives were unaware that Bush was a little bit progressive and wouldn’t have even considered prepping for the end of the world. During Clinton, maybe, but not Bush. That makes this guy very unlikely to have listened to anything Glenn Beck had to say. He was a liberal prepper, they exist, too, you know. Most believe in global warming. Possibly (just guessing here) he realized that there is no global warming, that’s why they changed the termonology to climate change, and that his famed leader (Obama) won’t get re-elected, so the end of his world had come.

      LUKERW- I have read some of youur posts and found them to be lacking in some facts. Yes, you are supposed to get a warrant but once that warrant is issued and the authorities have identified themseves(they don’t have to do that in all cases but in this one it should have been done) then you have to recover the suspect and if he resists, or refuses to surrender then they have the right to remove him and arrest him. If lethal force is neccessary, as is the case for a multiple murderer then it is granted. Besides, I don’t think the cops are going to be called cowboys for this, since he shot himself.

      Get your facts straight and come on back, ya hear.

      What if during a militarized serving of a warrant, SWAT killed his wife and child (like Ruby Ridge), and he escaped?

      What if he bugged out, but did not know that he had been the subject of intense surveillance for years and they already knew exactly where he was?

      What if they simply brought a bigger stick and bombed him out of his retreat – a retreat designed for THREE people?

      Citizens, be careful. If you prepare for emergencies of any kind.       I agree don’t believe what the media feeds you such as the Rodney King case you only seen the beating thats what they wanted you to see not the fact there was a car chase and the minutes before that lead to the beating. As for the preppers many people back in the 60‘s and 70’s also built bunkers the facts don’t state when the bunker was built.       This story was singled out by the Media to convince uninformed Americans that all preppers are paranoid, gun-hoarding weirdos who hunker down in holes in the ground and are ready and willing to kill their own families when the SHTF. It doesn’t work that way, and we all know it. Mental illness is not confined to one particular group. We’ve all read those stories of wealthy, successful men who lost their fortunes in the economic downturn. Then their families lived in large, expensive houses that they could no longer afford. In their minds, their self-worth was connected to what was their bank accounts. And in their sick minds, the only way out was to kill themselves and their entire families. Babies included. Because “poverty is not an option”. I certainly hope that people don’t fall for this simple-minded manipulation game that the Media is playing.

    When will Napolitano use Obama’s US drones to bomb his bunker as they are using in Syria and everywhere else on the globe? We know they can use the “domestic terrorist” theory in court under the Eric Holder regime. He is in fact…a white guy….so he MUST be considered terrorist under current US laws.

      He obtained the guns to murder with. He built the bunker to hide from the law.
      He stocked up on supplies, so he could stay hidden until the law assumed he had fled to another state.

      This nut had nothing at all to do with being a survivalist. His “survival” plan did not include his family. He was just plotting a murder. Glenn Beck did not put any ideas of any kind, in this nut’s head.

      Anyone who has listened to Glenn Beck knows, that Glenn has nothing but kindness and love in his heart. He wants all of us to be well prepared for any disaster, just like his family and close friends are preparing.

      Glenn is not obligated in any way, to warn us of possible upcoming life changing events, but out of the goodness of his heart, he lets us in on it, and keeps us informed.
      Wish Sean and Rush would keep us as well informed as Glenn Beck does.

People on the left issue fatwa’s against people on the right all dazy, every day. They call for republican women to kill themselves, they call for someone to shoot Rush and then they are insulted when a right winger wants to “Target” a left wingers territrry. Not to long ago there was a shooter (can’t remember his name) the press spent days painting him as a right wing nut. MSNBC told yet another outrageous lie about him that he was connected to the Tea Party. When they wene’t able to stay ahead of the story, they stopped lying and the story just vanished. Do you know what stopped the left wing onslaught? The FACTS of the story came out. As itg tunrns out, he was associated with terrorists and was part of the O.W.S. mjovement. The libs actually tried to paint him as somebody elses problem. It got them ahead of the story, so their lie about him would stand and it jpainted peoplewho they disagree with, with a broad brush. Do you think that Glenn had anything to do with that or was it Martin Bashir, Keith Olbermann, Ed Schultz and not to be forgotten Racheal Maddow?     The problem us, the self-absorbed prepper husband and father did not have enough love and concern to faithfully prepare his own family!

    If the wife and daughter had NRA training and had they been well armed, then the massacre would have been a shootout, and our “survival expert” would have been pinned down in a crossfire, maybe being able to wound or kill just his wife or only his daughter instead of progressively slaying both of them.

    Laws must be enacted obliging American citizens to own firearms (like the Swiss) and carry them at all times.

    If these poor victims had been NRA-trained to stand their ground, then perhaps one or both would be alive.

      Seems a bit strange to me. Just because he showed his gun collection to the boyfriend doesn’t mean he offed his family. What would the possible motive be? Maybe someone killed his family and he found them an left to avoid being killed himself? Hopefully they get him alive so we can get more of the story. Looking at that bunker and knowing the police, he will be killed. He has plenty of food and water most likely, and he apparently is equipped with a gas mask as they tried flushing him with tear gas.

      This case is eerily similiar to one that happened in my hometown. In that case, the wife and children fled, the man cut holes in the floor below the staircases to deter firemen, poured gas allover the bedroom and shot himself. He was planning to kill his family, but they escaped.
      This man was not a prepper, he was a really nice guy who lived down the street from me, had a picture pefect life, and was an excellant workman.
      The trouble started when he started taking steroids. Let’s hear all the facts first, before we start censoring radio show hosts. Immediately blaming Glenn Beck, especially when these posts all pile up and once, makes the poster seem like a member of journolists and/or paid shills.

      FEMA suggest that we should have food set aside for emergencies like tornadoes, hurricanes, blizzards, earthquakes, etc.

      Locally the FEMA district upped their recommended amount for 3 days to 4 days. The link to the .pdf though talks in terms of weeks.

      I look at it this way. If nothing happens fine, then I use the food set a side on a camping/backpacking trip & replace it with new stocks.

      honest question – is it the norm that survivalists are antisocial, overly anxious, fearful, depressed, isolated individuals ?? There must be a difference between reasonably planning for a future possible disaster or catastrophic event, yet living a normal productive life – and obsessing about such in a way that makes life unlivable. If one is in constant fear of what may occur, it would seem that such a person is not really living. One would already just be barely mentally surviving. That seems to be Keller’s case. Years of planning to prepare against some outside force, yet he is the one who seems to have taken the lives of his family and his own. Very sad.

      Agree .. and sad … very sad…..for the two ladies.

      How do you know they were not killed when the police tried to raid his house and found out he wasn’t there? How do you know he is not wanted by some seedy types who came after him and killed his family? Of course, the story could be exactly as they claim. We won’t know if they kill him in his bunker.

      @HIDDEN … no matter who it was ..Satan was involved .. I expressed my sadness at the two ladies found dead .. the way things are today .. I don‘t accept the gov’t word on anything .. he may have well been hunted by the gov’t .. but I am sad for the two women who were killed .. and now this man I don’t know if he was the killer or not … since he is dead .. I would say we never will …

      What better way to quash the truth forever than to kill the last person that knows what really happened and then say that he shot himself. These 2 ladies might have been killed in a botched raid like others have said. He escaped, they chased him down and smoked him. Who is to say that it did not happen THAT way? Some govt spokesman? Some cop?
