Cops Suspect Date Rape Drug in Mass Overdoses of Women at WA Party

ROSLYN, Wash. (AP) — A dozen young people — most of them women — were taken to hospitals after overdosing on an unknown substance that may have been slipped into their drinks at a house party in central Washington, police said Saturday.
All but one had been released by late Saturday afternoon, and that person was in good condition at a hospital in Ellensburg, according to police and a nursing supervisor.
The investigation started late Friday when officers and Kittitas County sheriff’s deputies received a report of a possible overdose victim at a Roslyn grocery store. Acting on information from the victim’s friends, police went to the house party and found 11 more young people either passed out or semiconscious.

Police believe something may have been slipped into their drinks. They expect toxicology tests on blood and urine samples taken from the victims to help determine what that might have been, said Cle Elum Police Chief Scott Ferguson.
“We don’t believe this was just a result of heavy drinking,” Ferguson said.
The emergency response required ambulances from all over the county.
When police began sweeping the house for possible victims, one sheriff’s deputy found and arrested a male who was engaging in sexual activity with a semiconscious female, Ferguson said. That person was released after investigators determined the woman to be his girlfriend, but Ferguson said police still have serious concerns about the incident and are still investigating.
Most of those at the party were students at Central Washington University.
Some students who attended the party told KOMO-TV of Seattle on Saturday that they believe a bottle of vodka had been spiked with the date-rape drug Rohypnol, commonly known as “roofies.”
Cops Suspect Date Rape Drug in Mass Overdoses of Women at WA Party“When I got there people started falling like flies,” said Chris Unger, a freshman. “I carried about four people downstairs. … Even if you’re a lightweight, you don’t just black out like that. We knew it was roofies.”
Another freshman, Katelynn Allen, called it scary.
“Everything was going fine, the music was playing, people were having fun — and then all of a sudden all the girls were puking everywhere,” she told the station. “Girls were outside on their backs.”
The students said several people at the party used vodka from the bottle to make mixed drinks. Those who brought their own alcohol, drank beer or didn’t drink any alcohol were not affected, the students said.
Cle Elum Sgt. Monty Moore said investigators wouldn’t know for sure until toxicology results come back.
“Right now we have no way of knowing for sure what drug was ingested by these folks,” he said.
College police, Cle Elum police and sheriff’s deputies were continuing the investigation.
The party coincided with Roslyn Crawl, an event featuring 20 bands at three venues. Roslyn, a former mining town with a population of about 1,000, is where the television sitcom “Northern Exposure” was filmed.

    From news:

“When officers arrived, many partygoers fled. Some crawled into the bathtub and covered themselves with plywood, others crawled into the attic and hid in insulation, Moore said.”

    College students?

Bet those boys from the attic are still itching today from insulation.

These kids are learning a valuable lesson, I hope. When you run with the wrong crowd you can only expect bad resuls. Choose your friends carefully and you will be a lot happier. These kids should be at home with their parents instead of running around like a bunch of undisciplined idiots. You reap what you sow. Girls and guys, get some class!

    beekeeper,

I would say that on the basis of risk analysis alone the police need to vigoruosly investigate whether there was a conspiracy to commit mass rape. If so, then there is a high chance of more than one perp involved. I have a young female relative that attends that college. I want the threat eliminated, if it exists. If I didn’t know that most police departments are willing to take an easy (cheap) explanation, then I would not be as concerned. Some times the hideousness of the risks’ impact alone is more than enough to offset the low probabilities in terms of mitigation.

Obviously it wasn‘t the shrimp cocktails that made em sick or it could be any ’bad’ street drug for that matter.

When I was in college in early 80s at UVA and beyond I witnessed people putting all kinds of crap in their bodies under the assumption it was “Coke” or this or that.

Then again in a society where people are consuming adulterated drano and the other nice chemicals that make up Crystal Meth, http://tinyurl.com/24ff3×2

I‘m surprised this doesn’t happen every weekend or this may very well be the beginning of such an attack from America’s many enemies on our college campuses.

“A spike in the arm and the big sleep for this guy sounds about right.”
Certainly a scumbag, but death? Jail is good.
Why were those young ladies drinking that stuff that might have been spiked in the first place? Story does not mention drinking age and just refers to them as “young people”.
They were looking to get trashed on alcohol and there was someone there to take advantage of them.
Where was their personal responsibility? Maybe they’ve learned something. They should be grateful a big lesson cost them so little.

ULYSSES P creates a quandary, “Why were those young ladies drinking…Where was their personal responsibility? Maybe they’ve learned something.”

Had those girls only been drinking soda pop, laced soda pop, are those girls still irresponsible?

Those girls of legal drinking age holding an expectation of not being drugged, are those girls irresponsible?

Regardless of age nor type of drink, there is an expectation by those girls they will not be drugged then raped. Underage drinking is usually wrongful but to hold those girls responsible for being drugged then raped is significantly more wrongful.

You are faulting girls for what boys wrongfully did. You are suggesting those girls deserved to be drugged and raped. I am sure this is not your intent.

As in many cases, good parenting could have prevented this tragedy…

The girls parents should have taught their daughters that you don‘t drink anything from someone you don’t know and trust, period. This goes for alcohol, soda, or punch,

The boys parents should have taught their boys not to do such things.

Girls these days are taking way too many stupid risks these days, from the Duke ‘Sex Liat/Thesis’ to this party.

These 12 girls will never go to another party and just grab a bottle and start drinking again, that’s for sure.

Beekeeper I find it interesting you start you post lecturing the girls. Every woman in the country should not have to worry that they will be drugged and raped at a party. Yes everyone male and female should use caution and common sense and be aware of their surroundings. But it is shocking that somehow the women are at fault. Are you saying that if a woman drinks at a party she must be a slut and deserves to be raped? You are right that parenting is the only thing that will fix this growing problem. Too many people today do not respect other people or themselves. Today’s music, TV and movies objectify women as sexual objects.

One of the parents I know taught her two kids to drink only from individual containers that had been opened right in front of them (i.e. soda cans, beer bottles, as opposed to draft beer) and no mixed drinks. Those instructions have now been amended to “containers that you yourself open” after her daughter was found unconscious at a local beach. Apparently, whoever gave her the first bottle of beer was “kind enough” to open it right in front of her. This particular gal didn’t get “sick”, she apparently just dropped like a stone. She wasn’t puking at all, as a matter of fact, she was barely breathing and the EMTs and ER doctors didn’t expect her to make it. Had she been vomiting, she would have, as Okpulot Taha pointed out, expelled some of the drug. Despite all odds, she did make it but it was a l-o-n-g road back.

There are guys who have been targeted victims of the same type of crime. Most of the time, both the male and female victims don’t report it to the police because it is too embarrassing. With such nation wide publicity, the police will find the perps. Hopefully, they will be able to get enough evidence to send these clowns away for a LONG time and the jokers involve will realize they almost killed a bunch of innocent kids for kicks.

One of the girls is or was in critical condition at a hospital. Out of the twelve victims reported so far, only one was a boy. I would guess he was not privy to what was going on. I have a hunch a lot more girls were victimized but this has yet to be reported; the “red” cup.

This knowledge of the “red” cup being laced with a drug, does point to a conspiracy; at least two boys and most likely many boys, evidenced by common knowledge of the “red” cup. Rather clear this conspiracy had an end goal of mass rape of girls.

Might think me presumption to assume “boys” did this, but I have yet to come across a case like this when a girl is a perpetrator. This specific crime is a male crime, a gender specific crime.

This does point to decaying moral values within our nation. This also points to masculine sexism still being a problem within our nation, a serious and sometimes lethal problem.

Might seem I am scatterbrained but this incident prompts me to think of Guy Cimbalo and his essay urging “hate rape” of conservative women. His essay was published by Playboy magazine then withdrawn in a matter of hours. This suggests to me there is growing problem with viewing women as sexual objects to be abused.

On the mild side, we witness sexualization of Sarah Palin as with fabricated photos of her nude. On the extreme side is this Washington event which appears, on the surface, a plan to commit mass rape of young girls.

All of this points to a developing serious problem; vicious masculine sexism.

Why would you make this a sexist crime? I understand males are mainly the ones responsible for this type thing but your “ male crime ” label is absurd. It’s a crime plain and simple. It doesn’t matter what race or gender, just that it’s a crime. Labeling crimes leads to things such as Black Panthers at the voting booth clearly breaking laws on video and never being prosecuted. Just as there are criminals of every race, religion, gender doesn’t make every member of that race religion or gender a criminal. I am male and can tell you I would NEVER engage or knowingly sit by while such low life crime is taking place. I would urge you to not think of this as a gender crime but as a crime and a sick one at that. Most serial killers are male yet there are a few women who break the mold. A crime is a crime period.

REALITY CHECK risks debate with me which I admire, “Why would you make this a sexist crime?”

This is a crime perpetrated specifically by males against females. This is males making a target of only females for crime. This is masculine sexism. This type of thinking, especially when a group of males are involved, requires a mindset of viewing women as lesser creatures.

A comparison is the way many Muslim men treat not only Muslim women but all women. You and I would quickly label this masculine sexism. Muslim men value farm animals more than women. This is clear sexism. This crime of drugging women to make rape easy, is sexism of the same genre as Muslim sexism.

Within Islam, victimizing women is easy because there is widespread cultural acceptance, least amongst Muslim men. In Western nations victimizing women is not as easy hence the “date rape” drug. Islam culture, western culture, mindset is the same; women are of less value than men. This is, of course, sexism.

Rape is considered not a crime of sex nor sexism rather is a “control” issue, control over women, a manifestation of a sick male mind. Contrasting, when a group of boys get together then drug women with an intent of rape, this is not a control issue, this is pure sexual lust and is viewing women as lesser creatures who do not have a right to say, “NO!” This is sexism at its worst.

REALITY CHECK compares, “Labeling crimes leads to things such as Black Panthers at the voting booth clearly breaking laws on video and never being prosecuted.”

No, this is racism then secondarily a crime. Motivation, the mindset is racism. The displayed act of racism is the crime; white voter intimidation. Whites are the target, this is racism first, a crime second.

This drugging girls, motivation is sexism, the act of rape is the crime.

This is to differentiate between motivation or mindset, and displayed behavior. Clearly those Washington boys do not think much of girls. This is sexism. Their actions are the crime.

I think the root cause of this type of crime is the decay of decency in our society in general. I am almost 60 and have seen the gradual change in morals speed up in recent years. I grew up watching Leave It To Beaver, Father Knows Best and My 3 Sons. I was brought to respect teachers, policemen and adults in general. Young men were taught by their parents to respect women and young ladies were taught to respect themselves. Now music and TV too often present women as bitches and ho’s and sex objects. I still don’t understand how the young women now days accept this label and treatment. I would never treat my wife or any woman to this type of disrespect. On last season of Big Brother it came down to 3 men and 1 woman in the final 4. The woman told one of the guys she knew she would be voted out next because of bro’s before ho’s. I was shocked that this intelligent beautiful young woman accepted the label of ho. I am the father of 3 wonderful daughters that are now adults. They were taught to respect themselves and not to take crap from any boy/men they were dating. If the boy/man didn’t understand this I would teach them myself. It is sickening that the person that committed this crime saw the women and nothing more than objects. Until we as a society learn to respect each other this sort of thing will continue. As a father if one of my daughters were at this party and I found out who did it I would deal with it myself. The person who did this would understand very quickly why this was wrong. Once he drinks something and wakes up hours later with night stick placed some where he would not like.

First I would like to say I will debate civilly and without personal attacks. LOL Just had to say that to be clear I am not trying to be rude just expressing an opinion.

While I do agree, this as of now is a crime by males against women, I also feel calling it strictly a sexist crime would be wrong and let me explain. As with the Black Panther issue, most people view racism as mostly white people being racist which in numbers would most likely be true. Labeling a crime as racist crime creates the sense of black Americans cannot be racist against white Americans and cannot commit such a crime, which people do believe to be true. Hence the lack of prosecution in the Black Panther case. Calling this a male crime against women would likely create the feeling no woman would ever commit such a crime. While I have not researched this I would not rule out a woman ever committing such a crime. Unlikely yes, impossible no. Which is why I feel a crime is a crime and needs no other label other than a crime. Labeling crimes as racist or sexist may fit an agenda, at the end of the day these are crimes and should not go unpunished. How are we ever going to create equality labeling crimes? It shouldn’t matter who, what race, gender or religion but rather guilty being prosecuted and punished accordingly. I can understand and respect your opinions on sexism but at the same time surely you can see how labeling crimes is never going to put us on equal ground.

“No, this is racism then secondarily a crime. ”

I just have to disagree, I feel it is a crime first and foremost, the fact it is racism speaks on the character of the guilty or accused. Please understand this is just my personal opinion and how I feel. I just feel like labels creates sides when in the instance of crime there should only be guilty or innocent.

How do you get that one of the victims was or is in critical condition? All but one were released by the hospital, one remained at the hospital but was in “good condition”.

You are taking half a story and imagining the motives, then extrapolating it into a much broader issue than can be supported by any facts in this case.

It could just as easily be a case where a boy back at college had nefarious plans for one girl and he laced HER bottle of vodka, but she instead took the vodka to this party… You have literally nothing to base your “mass rape” theory on – was one boy going to systematically work his way through a dozen victims? Or was every boy at the party in on the “deal”, and all kept quiet when it went horribly wrong and the police showed up?

Who ever did this was likely bad at math, got the dosage horribly wrong, and bolted as soon as the first girl got sick. It is a reprehensible crime, but I doubt this is the beginning of a sexual war between men and women.

Well, gosh, this is no fun.

REALITY CHECK insists, “I also feel calling it strictly a sexist crime would be wrong and let me explain.”

I will not allow you to explain! I like winning a debate even if I have to cheat.

I understand your thoughts but be careful. I am not labeling this “strictly” a sexist crime. I am discussing the mindset behind these types of crimes. There must be motivation before a crime is committed. I am making a distinction between motivation causation and crime resultant. I suppose I am discussing the criminal mind rather than discussing the actual crime.

I am playing FBI profiler, “This usurp is a middle aged red skinned girl who delights in verbal fisticuffs and teasing boys with sexually suggestive remarks. She is a danger to society.”

REALITY CHECK is realistic, “While I have not researched this I would not rule out a woman ever committing such a crime.”

Well, I do periodically rape my husband. I am good with a lasso and am good at hog tying. However, he does help out by undressing and standing still for me. Rest of the time he knows to run when he sees coming with a lasso in hand, or a stick.

REALITY CHECK prints labels, ” How are we ever going to create equality labeling crimes?”

This is intuitive. Bringing attention to sexist crimes, racist crimes, political crimes, highlighting many different categories of crimes by label helps our society recognize and understand different types of crimes. This raises awareness. Society becomes aware then works at suppressing or eliminating the mindset behind these types of crime; eliminate the cause to prevent the crime.

(Taha): “No, this is racism then secondarily a crime. ”

REALITY CHECK fails to obey a crossing guard, “I just have to disagree, I feel it is a crime first and foremost….”

STOP! You are making a dangerous crossing! If those Black Panther boys were not racists, they would not have committed this crime of voter intimidation against white voters. In absence of a racist mindset, they would behave differently. Racism prompted their crime.

If those Washington boys were not sexists, they would not have victimized those girls. Their lack of respect for girls, sexism, prompted this crime.

Separating a criminal mindset from a criminal action is impossible; causation –> resultant.

Those boys up there in the Pacific northwest committed a crime based upon sexist motivation. Theirs is a masculine sexist crime.

Use of the “date rape” drug is clear intent to rape. In this case, a dozen or more girls are victims. This is intent to commit “mass” rape. This warrants life in prison without possibility of parole.

A thought for you, Beekeeper. Had a dozen of those girls died, would this be mass murder? If so, why would raping a dozen girls not be mass rape?

While agree that this would seem to be a ‘Mass Rape’ gone awry, I would also like to point out that this drug is used in one of the most unreported and under investigated crimes in America, one that is perpetrated by females. An unsuspecting male is approached by a female, starts a conversation, lures the man back to his hotel room/car and the man passes out and is robbed by the female. The male wakes up and is too embarrassed to report it.
Robbery and rape fall at different levels in the repulsion category, I believe that drugging a person for any reason is worse than either one.
So, to say that this drug is only or even mainly used by males to rape females is wrong and uninformed and might I say a bit sexist.

HUGH WILLIAMS remembers Ozzie and Harriet, “I am almost 60 and have seen the gradual change in morals speed up in recent years.”

Yours is a very good point. I have yet to put a finger on what is happening but I do know there is a rapid acceleration in society showing strange behaviors, and this strangeness is way out there.

There was a time you and I believed the Sixties to be the weirdest decade ever. Now we find ourselves wishing to go back to the Sixties! Poking flowers in national guard gun barrels, running around naked, smoking pot and fornicating, wearing hip-hugger bell bottoms, colorful shirts and sandals, listening to Jimi Hendrix and the Rolling Stones, this seems like paradise compared to lifestyles of today. Truth is, Hugh, we were mere innocent children back then compared to today.

Seems this is an issue of respect. Although I was just a small girl plowing behind a mule during the Sixties, today I look back and see young people were still respectful to parents, teachers and authority figures. This is true millions took to the streets to protest Vietnam, this is true just about everyone loved running around naked and doing it in the woods and just as true, music became what we thought irreverent. But when all went back home, went back to school, respect was displayed.

An odd twist is we thought the Mafia to be the most murderous and evil of all organizations. Today, the Mafia is amongst the most respected and patriotic of all organizations. I will take my chances with the Mafia before walking amongst gang bangers on the streets of Los Angeles and Chicago.

You and I could rant for days about what is happening today and we would just barely scratch the surface of reality. There are so many changes going on so rapidly, we cannot keep up. Those changes are generally not for the good.

Personally, I contribute almost all of this to the advent of socialist left liberalism, this attitude of no responsibility and touchy-feely sensitivity nonsense. Worst of all, political correctness has silenced our voices of objection to moral decay.

HUGH WILLIAMS loves black and white television, “I grew up watching Leave It To Beaver, Father Knows Best and My 3 Sons.”

Ha! I went for more intellectual pursuits. I grew up on The Three Stooges, Abbott and Costello, Amos and Andy and, of course, Dracula and Wolfman. Saturday night, though, Grand Ole Opry.

Today, about all worth watching on television is reruns of “I Love Lucy” and “Sea Hunt”.

Saddens me to know Howdy Doody is dead and buried in the Arlington National Cemetery alongside our once national pride.

TAQUOSHI is a cat lover, “My two cats would like to personally thank you for the unexpected snack.”

Cats are smarter than dogs, cats bury what dogs love to eat.

TAQUOSHI makes a serious point, “Thank you, God, they all got sick.”

Vomiting after ingestion of something is a signal of being near death, this is especially true when vomiting is followed by becoming unconscious. Vomiting is Mother Nature’s way of getting rid of a poison in our bellies. This informs us this drug dosage in drinks was extremely powerful, enough so this is surprising some of those girls did not die.

Reads to me police and medical care arrived just in time to save a lot of lives of young girls.

DRB 1142 is wary of Las Vegas, “I would also like to point out that this drug is used in one of the most unreported and under investigated crimes in America, one that is perpetrated by females.”

What I cannot figure out is how those clever hookers smear a potent drug around on their lips and not knock themselves out. Must be their lip gloss.

DRB 1142 writes in a whisper, “The male wakes up and is too embarrassed to report it.”

Nah, he just doesn’t want his wife to find out what he has been up to, or not up to but wishing he was.

I would not categorize this as a “sexist” crime because some of us girls are known to employ those wonderful women of our evenings. This is equal opportunity crime, no discrimination based upon gender. Seems money is genderless, almost.

No American paper money bearing a photo of a girl, yes? Best we girls can do is a cheesy coin bearing an image of Susan whats-her-name. Money is sexist, hookers are not.

Annoys me those stamp machines at post offices spit out a pocketbook full of Susan coins for change. Reminds of me slot machines in Vegas, though. Bit of a momentary cheap thrill.

For you boys, if you weren’t so prone to becoming lost on our highways and byways, you would head on up north of Carson City to enjoy classy girls at the Bunny Ranch. No danger of being knocked out at the Bunny Ranch unless you enjoy sex with a buxom girl on a trampoline, oh my, so very trampy.

Although Dennis Hof of the Bunny Ranch is a family friend, mine is not an endorsement of nor a promotion of the Bunny Ranch. I am simply suggesting a safe and sane environment for you boys where you will not be knocked out but the girls are knock outs and will have your socks rolling up and down all on their own. Ask for “Susan” when you visit, tell her “Taha” sent you. She will hook you up with a knock out you will truly enjoy.

However, your wives getting after you with sticks is your problem. Don’t use a credit card next time.

“When police began sweeping the house for possible victims, one sheriff’s deputy found and arrested a male who was engaging in sexual activity with a semiconscious female, Ferguson said. That person was released after investigators determined the woman to be his girlfriend…”

Wait, so it’s OK to engage in sexual activity with an unconscious girl as long as she is your girlfriend?

KRENSHAU comments, “Wait, so it’s OK to engage in sexual activity with an unconscious girl as long as she is your girlfriend?”

Although legal precedent is well established an unconscious person cannot provide informed consent, this would be a difficult case to prosecute based on her having given prior consent and, a guess here, telling police she consented to having sex with her boyfriend at this party.

However, if she did not provide consent, was unconscious, a case could be made for rape albeit a difficult case to win a conviction; his girlfriend would have to testify against him. No victim, no crime.

      Other girls victimized, no defense.

      Semiconcsious – big difference.

That assumes that she was able to confirm the activity was consensual – a reasonable guess, IMHO.

Okpulot Taha, You‘re assuming she’s given “prior consent”. Maybe she didn‘t and that’s why he was caught assaulting her while she was SEMI-conscious. I really don’t have any sympathy for a guy who does stuff like this. I truly believe he should his their genitals cut off with a rusty knife and no anesthesia.

PATRIOT WOMAN waves her rusty blade, “I really don’t have any sympathy for a guy who does stuff like this.”

Yep. You and I know this as a boy being a “gentleman”. Not many gentlemen around these days and those gentlemen who are tend to be older, much older. Sexiest gentlemen of our world were born during the Forties. My boy just squeaked in, 1949. My Okie cowboy will not allow me to drink much out in public anymore, he says, “Taha, I‘m just gettin’ too darn old for your barroom brawls.” He is a gentleman, an older saddle worn gentleman, quite a bit older than me but I never remind him of this.

We are obviously both older, but during our younger days we enjoyed drinking and square dancing down in Del Rio, up in Idabel, over in Laredo, even over in Clinton’s place, Little Rock. Been in our share of barroom brawls.

During those drunken fights, there was still a “gentleman” air about this. Those boys never slugged a girl except in self-defense. If those fighting boys stepped on a girl’s toes, they would stop, “Sorry, ma’am” then go back to fighting. Boys didn’t kick each other when down nor kick where this really hurts a boy; they need that stuff for later. When things started getting rough, I would lift my T-shirt and jiggle with a wolf whistle. Boy howdy, those boys always stopped their fighting, took to staring and grinning then went back to drinking and dancing like best of friends.

An important notion is during those old fashion barroom days, if a boy got to giving a girl a hard time, there would be dozen cowboys all over him looking to brand the bad boy then toss him out. Those were the days when a cowboy would take his hat off before asking a girl to dance, “Ma’am, I’d be right honored if you would have a dance with me.” How could a girl say no?

What disturbs me, PATRIOT WOMAN, is none of those boys up there in Washington stood up for those girls, did not warn them nor stop what was going on. Many of those boys had to know what was going on, this is not the kind of secret boys keep.

PATRIOT WOMAN is ornery, “I truly believe he should his their genitals cut off with a rusty knife….”

I prefer a rusty pair of pliers.

It was also said that the party was pretty mild until some “locals” arrived….I would assume the “local” boys brought the bottle of vodka with them thinking they’d have some easy prey one the bottle got passed around a bit since vodka seems to be a popular drink these days. Should be fairly easy to nail the little idiot if the local police are competent…which it sounds like they are. The culprit(s) should be thrown in jail for a year and then pay restitution to the girls for their hospital stays..

I am a guy who was almost killed by a woman using a roofie to rob me several years ago. They caught her and she is serving time in prison for assault and robbery. People can die from that stuff…I believe I am still having health issues because of injesting the stuff.

I say lock them up and throw away the key.
