Cops: Trayvon Martin Shooter Might Have Uttered ‘Fu**ing Coons’ Before Shooting

Police investigating the controversial shooting of a Florida teen admitted Tuesday they may have missed a piece of evidence. According to previously unreleased 911 recordings, the shooter, George Zimmerman, may have uttered the phrase “fu**ing coons” before shooting the now-dead teen, Trayvon Martin.

ABC News has more:

The Florida police department handling the fatal shooting of an unarmed black teen by a self-appointed neighborhood watch leader admitted to ABC News tonight that investigators missed a possible racist remark by the shooter as he spoke to police dispatchers moments before the killing.

The admission comes a day after the Justice Department announced that it has launched an investigation of the slaying of Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman last month as a possible hate crime.

On a tape of one of Zimmerman’s 911 calls the night of the shooting, he is heard saying under his breath what sounds like “f**ing coons.” Seconds later he confronted Martin and after a brief scuffle shot him dead.

Trayvon Martin Shooter George Zimmerman May Have Said Fu**king Coons Before Shootingvideo platformvideo managementvideo solutionsvideo player

You can listen to the recording of what some are calling a possible slur here. And while most outlets are reporting on it as a possible slur, that’s mostly because the phrase is slightly unintelligible.

Because of that not, everyone is convinced regarding the recording. An audio expert hired by WFTV in Florida, for example, believes Zimmerman said “punks.” No one reporting on the phrase, however, has questioned if it’s possible Zimmerman was, in fact, referring to raccoons that may have been in the area, which would not be unheard of since the shooting occurred at night.*

Zimmerman has not been charged in the Feb. 26 shooting and has said he shot Martin, who was returning to a gated community in the city after buying candy at a convenience store, in self-defense after Martin attacked him. Police said Zimmerman is white; his family says he is Hispanic.

The case has ignited a furor against the police department of this Orlando suburb of 53,500 people, prompting rallies and a protest in Gov. Rick Scott’s office Tuesday. The Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division said it is sending its community relations service this week to Sanford to “address tension in the community.”

Earlier in the week, the federal agency opened a civil rights probe into the shooting, and in Florida, Seminole County State Attorney Norm Wolfinger said a grand jury will meet April 10 to consider evidence in the case.

“We are pleased the Department of Justice has heeded our calls and agreed to investigate this outrageous case,” NAACP head Ben Jealous said in an emailed statement Tuesday. “The rules of justice in this nation have failed when an innocent teenage boy can be shot to death by a vigilante and no arrest is made for weeks.”

Local NAACP leader Turner Clayton Jr. said the federal Justice Department should not only review the investigation but also take over the Sanford Police Department.

Other civil rights leaders said the city’s police chief should step down.

“This is just the beginning of what is taking place,” Clayton said. “We’re going to make sure justice prevails.”

When The Associated Press tried to reach the police department Tuesday evening for comment, a dispatcher told a reporter to call in the morning.

Earlier Tuesday, an attorney for Martin’s family revealed the teenager told his girlfriend just moments before he was killed that he was being followed.

“‘Oh he’s right behind me, he’s right behind me again,’” 17-year-old Trayvon Martin told his girlfriend on his cellphone, attorney Benjamin Crump said.

The girl later heard Martin say, “Why are you following me?” Another man asked, “What are you doing around here?’” Crump said.

Crump told reporters Tuesday Martin cried out when a man bearing a 9mm handgun came at him. Police said Zimmerman, who was found bleeding from his nose and the back of his head, told authorities he yelled out for help before shooting Martin.

“She absolutely blows Zimmerman’s absurd self-defense claim out of the water,” Crump said of Martin’s girlfriend, whose name was withheld.

Martin, who was in town from Miami to visit his father in Sanford, called his 16-year-old girlfriend in Miami several times on Feb. 26, including just before the shooting, Crump said. The discovery of the lengthy conversations, including one moments before the shooting, was made over the weekend by Martin’s father, who checked his son’s cell phone log, Crump said.

The teenager told the girl on his way back from the store he‘d taken shelter from the rain briefly at an apartment building in his father’s gated community, Crump said. Martin then told her he was being followed and would try to lose the person, Crump said.

“She says: `Run.’ He says, `I’m not going to run, I’m just going to walk fast,’” Crump said, quoting the girl.

After Martin encountered Zimmerman, the girl thought she heard a scuffle “because his voice changes like something interrupted his speech,” Crump said. The phone call ended before the girl heard gunshots.

The last call was at 7:12 p.m. Police arrived at 7:17 p.m. to find Martin lying face down on the ground.

Zimmerman was handcuffed after police arrived and taken into custody for questioning, but was released by police without being charged. Police have interviewed Zimmerman twice since then.

Crump called the treatment patently unfair and asked if Martin would have received the same treatment if he had been the shooter.

“We will not rest until he is arrested. The more time that passes, this is going to be swept under the rug,” Crump said.

Crump said he plans to turn over information about the call to federal investigators; a grand jury in Seminole County is also likely to subpoena the records. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is also involved in the state case.

Former federal prosecutors said there are limitations to a Justice Department civil rights probe, which typically would involve a sworn law enforcement officer accused of abusing his authority.

In this case, they said, it’s not clear whether Zimmerman had any actual law enforcement authority or if the Sanford Police Department did anything improper. Zimmerman had a permit to carry a gun, but it was not required for his neighborhood watch patrol.

“I think the community has the feeling that there’s some type of cover-up,” said Jeffrey Sloman, former U.S. attorney in Miami. “At least the department’s involvement makes sure it gets some review. He wasn’t a police officer. I’m sure that this is going to be a tough case to prosecute.”

Authorities may be hamstrung by a state “Stand Your Ground” law that allows people to defend themselves with deadly force and does not require a retreat in the face of danger. Asked Tuesday if that law needs change, Republican Gov. Rick Scott said “it’s always positive to go back and think about existing laws.”

During a town hall meeting in Sanford, Florida Rep. Geraldine Thompson promised the law‘s repeal would be a top priority for the state legislature’s black caucus.

“If vigilante justice becomes the norm, will visitors feel comfortable coming to our state?” she said.

An online petition urging local authorities to prosecute Zimmerman had drawn more than 700,000 signatures at website Change.org as of early Wednesday. About 50 defense attorneys and protesters filled the lobby in the governor’s office Tuesday to deliver a letter seeking an independent investigation and a task force to study racial profiling. They applauded when Scott came out of his office to talk to them.

“I will make sure justice prevails,” Scott said. “I’m very comfortable that (state law enforcement) is going to do the right thing. They’re not going to let somebody do something wrong and get away with it.”

I think many of you are missing the point of this evidence. It actually doesn’t matter whether Zimmerman said “coon” or “punk”…the fact is that he was making a disparaging remark directed towards an innocent kid walking down the street. Zimmerman was initially exonerated by claiming self-defense under the “stand your ground” law. However, his remarks are relevant towards showing that Zimmerman was the aggressor and not the victim.

A big difference is that in that case, the police actually tried to do something about it and are looking for the perpetrators. Here, the police seemed content with Zimmerman’s answer that it was self-defense without actually looking more into the case. Here, the local cops haven’t done ****. That is the difference.

The hate crime in that case in indefensible, but the kid did not suffer serious injuries, was in the hospital for a few hours, and nobody is saying that those boys will not be punished. It took weeks before Trayvon Martin’s death came to national attention. This story is terrible, the perps need to be punished, and it is a hate crime. However, conservatives generally don’t like hate crime classifications, so that is a catch-22.. Will it be talked about in the national media? Sure, it should be if the local police cover for the boys and decide not to punish them. Keep us posted.

Many years ago, I was a member of a Neighborhood Watch in the suburban DC area. In our training (conducted by the police), we were taught that our primary task was to report suspicious activities to the authorities, not patrol armed, and NOT to confront any suspects. If the reports are true, Mr. Zimmermann not only broke every possible rule of NW, but then decided to shoot an unarmed teenager after he (Mr. Z) initiated the confrontation. This makes NW look like a bunch of crazy vigilantes, gives the gun control kooks ammunition to attack our rights, and brings the fans of “hate crimes” out of the woodwork (I am in favor of punishing the act rather than the motive). The real travesty is that Mr. Z was not arrested immediately while the shooting was investigated. NW is not given police powers, and frankly I would not feel safer if untrained, armed patrols were conducted in my neighborhood by people who felt empowered to use their weapons in non-life threatening situations.

First, “Suburban D.C.” There you go of coarse you were told to not be armed. Second, It doesn’t matter if NW “Has Police power’s” Zimmerman has a Concealed carry permit. He is trained in it’s use and laws that apply as it is required of the permitting process. Zimmerman needs no such “Police Powers” to defend himself. (regardless of whether or not this act was self defense) How did you know that the boy was not armed?……Because the Police searched the boy and found that to be the case, Zimmerman did not know that the boy was unarmed, he “might” have also thought that he was armed. Point is YOU only know it now after the fact and from the police. Zimmerman did not know for sure and therefore acted in a manner to protect what he felt at the time was his life. Third, “Travesty he wasn’t arrested” WHY? If the Police had a single shred of evidence that this may not have been self defense at the time do you really think they would not have arrested him? They did not have any reason to discount his story. Are you advocating that Police go around arresting people and then figure out how and what to charge them for? Is this still a Nation of Laws where the citizens are still innocent until PROVEN guilty? So Called conservatives running around wanting people detained until proven innocent. Making judgements without the whole story nor the facts. If Zimmerman Killed this kid then they will go after him. Convicting Zimmerman in the street is Vigilantism.

According to you, no one has the right to walk around, especially not 17 year old black kids because they are all up to no good. How do you know he didn’t tell Zimmerman that his father lived there?

Also, he was found with skittles and a can of iced tea and was very close to his father’s house. What part of this indicates to you that he was doing anything but going out to get candy? Let me guess, it’s the fact that he is black.

Even if more blacks do commit crimes, that in no way means that Martin was in any way involved in a crime here. From your comments, it appears that you think all blacks have criminal records so you assume Martin did. However, considering The Blaze hasn’t reported that this guy had a criminal record, which you can bet it would have had he had one, it is highly unlikely that he was a criminal.

On the other hand, Zimmerman did have a history of violence against police officers and had a history of calling 911 when he spotted blacks in the neighborhood. I know the Blaze won‘t tell you these things and since you are clearly racist and ignorant you won’t actually look it up yourself, but maybe you should look at the facts before just making **** up.

“Facts are facts. And since it is not likely a nice little trip to the candy store like a 12 year old would do, we will have all the facts come out in court.”

See now, here’s the funny thing. Until this picked up national attention, it had no chance of going to court. Zimmerman was never arrested; the police let him go. The killing happened almost a month ago, and he still has not been arrested. When I grew up, if you shot someone (even in “self defense”), you would still be arrested and sent to trial; because it’s up to a jury to determine self defense.

“and why he just didn’t tell Zimmerman that he was visiting his father who lived there like a normal person would. That is how you avoid getting shot.”

No. It is on a responsible gun owner to not shoot an unarmed kid. The idea isn’t “You should go along with someone holding a gun,” it’s “you should only ever use a gun if someone comes after you.”

Let’s turn this around, Nemo. If the kid had a gun and Zimmerman started chasing him down, would you say he would be justified in turning around and shooting Zimmerman?

      @Nemo13
So, according to your logic, Zimmerman had a “right” to harrass that kid and it was Trayvon Martin’s “responsibility” to abide by the rules of a self-appointed vigilante? The kid should have known his place (which, apparently, was definitely not an affluent white neighbourhood)? Aren’t you supposed to be defending individual liberties? You rant against government opression but you have no problem with mob rule? What about lynching? Should we start hanging black kids from trees to set an example?

      @Nemo13

“Why he just didn’t tell Zimmerman that he was visiting his father who lived there like a normal person would. That is how you avoid getting shot.”

He had absolutely no duty to tell Zimmerman why he was there. In fact, the police told Zimmerman to stop following him, a direction he did not follow. But, according to you, if he failed to tell Zimmerman why he was walking down the street, something he has an absolute righto to by the way, it was his fault that Zimmerman shot him?

So, if someone thinks you are suspicious and comes up to you and demands that you tell him what you are doing there and you don’t immediately explain your life story, does he then have the right to shoot you? According to you, yes.

It’s dark out and a grown man is following me (I’m not a grown man). Sorry, regardless of his color, I’m not going to stop and have a conversation with him. I am going to get to my house as quickly as possible.

Regardless of what happened or what was said, too many in the black community have already tried and convicted Zimmerman. Al Sharpton has declared him guilty, Quanel X of Houston has declared him guilty, theNBLM and how many other black organizations have declared him guilty.

Too often when these things happen lives are ruined regardless of the truth because the truth only comes out later. The most recent of Sharptons crusades was the Duke University rape case and the Jena, La. nooses case. Both were blown out of proportion because some people did not want facts, they wanted a white on black hate crime.

I hope Zimmerman gets a trial in a courtroom, not a trial by Sharpton and his supporters.

Tifosa ……….an investigation is being done. Al Sharpton is a known race baiter, hate monger and you should know that. If you haven’t heard of the Duke case or the Jena case or the Brawley case, please educate yourself to how Sharpton’s interference into these cases distorted the truth and ruined lives.

During a town hall meeting in Sanford, Florida Rep. Geraldine Thompson promised the law‘s repeal would be a top priority for the state legislature’s black caucus.

“If vigilante justice becomes the norm, will visitors feel comfortable coming to our state?” she said.

Seriously? One person going above the call makes the state a safe haven for vigilantism? These libs can’t wait to jump on the stereotyping bandwagon, but will crucify anyone that mentions something the majority of their base does as a racist.

They also say the people are worried about a police cover up? Geez, wonder where they could get that idea. Maybe from the flame baiting of people that were not there and are making absurd judgements off a phone call that has not definative evidence. The “stand your ground” law has helped more people than has harmed, and there is a reason for the saying of “when seconds count, cops are minutes away”. The cops took over 10 minutes to get there after the first call from Zimmerman.

I didn’t hear anything, but that doesn‘t mean he din’t say it? How canthey tell? I think they have special sound clearing equipment that can help? Either way, UNLESS they know for sure, why would they FEED into this and start more riots? Let the COURTS decide, as they should. IF he did this on purpose, do you think it was a LOVE crime? HATE CRIME.. stupid law.

I thought the exact same thing. Sure, the man was chasing after a suspicious individual, was on the phone with 911, and was muttering about friggin’ raccoons.

I’m hoping it was just a really, really poor joke.

Here is my opinion on the matter, there is a grand jury already investigating the matter. If he has violated laws and indeed commited a crime let the man face the courts and his guilt or innocence in accordance to the law be establised thus.

Remember, in the eyes of the law we are all supposed to be innocence until PROVEN guilty.

Right now from the Federal level, watch for Holder to come down on this case with a ton of steel and fire; remember he said hate-crimes apply only to those where a minority is a victim. Obama and cronies will milk this for their gun control/elimination movement for all it is worth.

Remember in the eyes of the Florida law, we are all supposed to be shot to death before proven guilty.

Honestly, having spent most of my adult life in law enforcement, my assessment in this case is the local authorities dropped the ball by not arresting this immediately. Not as a CYA measure, but out of common sense. This act just opened up all of the arm chair quarterbacks to get a toe hold in the situation. Now, all of the race baiting gangs are getting involved and are turning this whole situation into a quagmire of hate that the media in general will certainly support. Now, the thought police will jump in with the hate crime mess. Murder is murder regardless of the so called ‘hate’ process.

Exactly, the msm seems more concerned about the possible use of a racial epithet then the alleged murder. The msm agenda is obvious and consistent and aligns with the two poverty pimps Sharpton and Jackson,to fan the flames of racism and hopefully instigate a riot. These ‘hate crime’ laws and gun free zones and drug free zones are all BS,redundant laws that aren’t necessary.

TIFOSA – Lawsuit is a weak, lame, cop-out excuse. The only way Zimmerman would have a valid claim to such a lawsuit would be

Progressiveslayer – no, the comment just fuels the fire. It isn’t the main concern. The main concern is that if people wouldn’t have raised their voices, the “squeeky clean” killer would have been let go and his actions unquestioned. Despite Zimmerman’s history of violence and inappropriate behavior, the Sheriffs Office seems to have covered for him, or at least done a terrible investigation.

But hate crimes can be committed against anybody – not just minorities. And you are for drugs in school zones? You are more progressive than you lead on !!!

However, because of the so-called “stand your ground” defense, the shooter’s state of mind is relevant…and his words are evidence of his state of mind. Was George Zimmerman thrust into a situation in which he was forced to defend himself…or was he the pursuer, motivated in part by animosity, who instigated the confrontation?
