TAMPA, Fla. (The Blaze/AP) — A Tampa high school principal says he was shocked and scared after learning a former student has been arrested for plotting to blow up the school on the first day of classes.
Freedom High School Principal Chris Farkas said Wednesday threats are common in large schools, but most aren’t real. After hearing that police confiscated fuel, shrapnel and other materials from Jared Cano’s home, the principal said “fear set in.”
Farkas said Cano’s plan may have been thwarted because the 17-year-old had been expelled from the school and would have been “red flagged” as soon as he stepped on campus.
Cano was arrested Tuesday and faces several charges including possessing bomb-making materials. Police say they also found a marijuana growing operation at his home.
Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor also weighed in on Cano’s plot to kill 32 people, including two principals on the first day of school. Castor says police found a “manifesto” outlining Cano’s plan minute-by-minute:

The farther you go back in U.S history, the more biblical our population was, public schools instructed bia creation, they prayed before lunch…..
Once we got away from the Bible, once we got away from punishment of disobedience, is when the violence started. Show me where I am wrong.
Dr Spoc was wrong. Our society shows it.

Posted on August 17, 2011 at 4:59pmwhen was your generation? see my comments below. You can not teach kids “if it feels good do it” and not expect such actions as this.
Not very far back in our history, a teacher could take a kid down to the principals office, wear his butt out with a paddle, send him home with a note, where his dad would not explode, call the ACLU and start a law suit. Instead, he would take junior out back, and tear his butt out of the frame with his belt. We used to expect children to mind. We no longer do. now we have time out, and stuff that does not work. This nations is in a mess. read end time Bible prophecy, and see that when it talks about the end times, it over and over claims that children will be disobedient. Mr conservative teacher on here may hate the truth, but truth is universal. you can have your own opinion, but not your own truth.

Posted on August 17, 2011 at 5:09pmIn our days, there were consequences for behaving badly. We go spanked, the paddle, our parents, etc. Today, the criminals have more rights than anyone else so there are no real consequences – even if they go to prison it is better for most than what they have at home.
Report Post »And if that is not enough, the trial lawyers have convinced everyone that it is always someone else’s fault.

Posted on August 17, 2011 at 5:16pmCalm down there RangerPee, kids will be kids. At some point they start doing their own thing. The only thing you can do is give them guidence. You can`t control their evey move with a paddling. We got our butts torn up by my mother on a regular basis, but we still did things that they would not approve of and that I`m not that proud of today. It`s called crowing up.

Posted on August 17, 2011 at 6:54pm@ SOONER12 You must be from my generation..We dreaded any calls, notes or teacher conferences if we had done something wrong..My Mom spoke softly and carried a big stick..None of us got into trouble (except me) I fought other kids that made fun of my sister just older that was crippled. THAT I didn’t get in trouble for tho..My own kids started school in the late 50‘s through the early 70’s and I saw a definate change in both the curriculim and the teachers. Neither were an improvement. Then I had grandkids in school, and it was even worse. LIBERAL teachers were uninterested in the fact that they had students that were failing the basics, math, english, spelling, reading, etc. They were more interested in teaching their LIBERAL agenda and propaganda then seeing that the kids got an adaquate, well rounded education that would help them get a higher education . American History was changed, No physical activity classes. nothing of real use in todays world taught any longer. Liberal_teacher is probably one of those that are paid to teach but runs the halls instead and lets her Class Aides do what little teaching gets done.

Posted on August 17, 2011 at 7:21pmI started school in the 70′s. Most kids really wanted to do well, and the big punishment for someone in trouble was “the bench”. It was outside the principal’s office. The troublemaker had to sit there (not sure how long) and when other kids passed by, the embarressment was overwhelming. But that was back in the day when most people wanted to do what was right. I never got in trouble myself, I avoided it like the plague. But why do some go bad? I think it’s no values at home combined with personal tradgedy, like abuse or a death in their life.

You are so right . . . someone else’s well-raised son or daughter probably stepped forward knowing full well that this kid has a perverted sense of how to achieve one’s goals. My guess is he has acted out many times before, and decided the manner in which he had done so was not extreme enough to effect the change he sought.
He is probably under the delusion that such an attack will validate whatever arguments he has made in the past, and help him change the world for the better . . . just like Kazinksi, McVeigh, Ayers, Bin Laden, etc. All of them were sufficiently incapable of accepting that their ideas would not be broadly accepted, so they decided to use force.
Thank the informant . . . more importantly, thank his or her parents, and pray that they raised more good children into this world.

Posted on August 17, 2011 at 10:15pm@locked you really need to look up the definition of an investigation a trip came in and the police investigated the complaint. Like it or not there was a police investigation and the police did a good job. @mildot you do not have a clue. It has nothing to due with big government at all. This was an investigation that saved lives. If you are able to determine one’s views based off of a statement why did you not inform the police first as you can read minds. As for both of you the police did a good job like it or not. Get a clue do a ride along with your local police or sheriff’s department and maybe you will figure it out.

“you really need to look up the definition of an investigation a trip came in and the police investigated the complaint. Like it or not there was a police investigation and the police did a good job”
Sure. But without said tip, the police would have been late to the show and nothing would have been done. It wasn’t like there was a trail leading to this kid – it was a run-of-the-mill follow-up on a tip that led to the arrest. It was nothing out of the ordinary from what I read. The tipster saved lives; the police just did their job, and I give them kudos for that.

Pontificate please?
do yourself a quick study (google is great). Find out the exact time that school shootings and such started to happen in America. You will notice that it coresponds with just about the time we took creation out of schools, and added evolution. We got rid of “thou shalt not kill” and replaced with “if it feels good, do it” You will also notice that around the same time, we had this new music that became real popular with the youth. Fill in the blank for me. Drugs, sex, and ____ _____? If you guess Rock and Roll, you guess right. Why were these three lumped together? They are tied to rebellion. We took away prayer, creation, added music with a heathen beat from the jungles of Africa (thus the reason people claimed Elvis was the first white man that could do the black mans music), and next think you know, we got schools full of long hair freaks, kids who are out of control, and kids who kill each other. This did not exist prior to 1962.

Posted on August 17, 2011 at 4:29pmThe fact that “they also found a marijuana growing operation at his home” speaks plenty. If we would go back to the days of warning kids drugs are indeed harmful to one’s body instead of glorifying it or even shrugging our shoulders at marijuana or even wanting to legalize the recreational use of it, things like this might be fewer. I know some people who smoke and if they are having mental issues it can make it all the more worse. Please say no to drugs, teach your kids that this stuff is not cool. Because we all know those “cool” people who use drugs are in jail, suffering mental/physical problems, or even have died as a result of it.
Report Post »Locked
Posted on August 17, 2011 at 4:49pmYeah… I’m sure you know of plenty of people who died from marijuana. This kid had serious issues, and I highly doubt they were caused by pot. He had previously been arrested for burglaries and weapon possessions (which is why he was expelled). Obviously he has issues, but I can’t see smoking weed being the cause… just a potential symptom. If he had a pot farm at home, he was growing it to sell, not just use.
Report Post »scarebear83
Posted on August 18, 2011 at 2:01am@ Locked, re-read my statement please, I went from talking about pot to drugs in general. Thus people have died as a result of drugs, being a broader meaning.
As far as him growing it to sell, I do not doubt that and would almost certainly agree he probably was but rarely does one sell a product they themselves have not partaken of. This teenager definitely had problems and I almost have no doubt that marijuana worsened it and not helped it.
