Princeton University Professor Cornel West battled it out with Fox News Channel’s Sean Hannity on Wednesday, appearing on Hannity‘s show for the first time since 2006 to discuss West’s months-old comments that then-GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain needs to “get off the symbolic crack pipe”

West made the remark in October after Cain said racism does not play a large role in the high unemployment rate among blacks.

“Symbolic crack pipe?” Hannity asked. “Why can’t somebody be African American and conservative and why are they constantly beaten up, demonized, called Uncle Toms and sellouts — horrific names that I know in your heart you’re not like that. Why would you say that about someone?”

“By symbolic crack pipe, what I meant was he’s living in Never Neverland,” West explained. “Anybody that downplays the prison industrial complex, when it comes to the way our brown sisters and brothers are treated with immigration policy, when it comes to the glass ceiling still at work even though we have a black president, racism is still very real.”

West asked Hannity, “You believe that racism is very much real in America?”

“Of course, absolutely,” Hannity said. “But Herman Cain — he was called a bad apple, trying to curry white favor, the Tea Party, the base likes him because he’s a black man who knows his place. You’re talking about the proverbial or symbolic crack pipe…Why would you use such language because you disagree with him and why are conservatives that are African American beaten up, called names with impunity?”

But West said he was only disagreeing with Cain’s views.

“I only reacted to him saying that racism was not still operating in society to the degree to which it’s holding people back,” West said. “If he’s saying something I agree with, I agree with that, there’s a whole host of conservatives who are black, white, red and what have you.”

    Mr West, if your statement was true then you would not be “teaching” at Princeton.

    No one is holding anyone back in this country. Your brown bothers and sisters have all the tools to succeed. Your brown brothers and sisters need to take advantage of the opporunities offered. All a society can do is give a person that opporunity. If your brown brothers and sisters choose not to take advantage of those opporunities it does mean that I, or anyone else are racist.

    Mr West, start spending your free time (you seem to have a lot of that) telling the parents of your brown brothers and sisters to get an education.

      @showmestateguy Your statement “No one is holding anyone back in this country.” Is mostly right. There are some aspects of this country that are still very racist. However, all people in this country, at this time do have control of their own dsstiny. That being said, I do feel that Cornel West is a socialist idiot!

      Cornel West calls anyone who disagrees with him names. This is his justification for the hatred he spews. He hates every white man and blames them for anything that happens to a black man. He is one of Obumblers friends who dooesn’t believe a black man can be a racists just bcause he hates another race for its success.
      Part of his act us to call attention to himself and keep the spotlight on him. He enjoys the limelight and will do anything it takes to stay there.
      He will go the way of Rev Jesse and Rev Al and just become another racist agitator who runs from crisis t another yelling “Look at me, Look at me”.

    C. West has the pefect teeth gap for a crack pipe, maybe this is why he knows what he is talking about……
    But why does Hannity invite this Prof. Dementia to his show at all? The truth is that C. West wants to use the race card as long as possible, because his power and living depend on keeping this issue alive. No race card, no money brother!
    Hannity should have asked him: Why are you so rich brother? How many slaves do you have brother?

    Racism is wrong either way.

    I never understood the “it’s only racist if white people do it” thinking.

    Not saying all people feel that way but I feel saddened when a black individual will say to another “you’re an uncle tom“ or ”you’re a sell out.”

    It is self-racism that is holding people back. I use Michelle Obama’s “angry black woman” as an example.

      Maybe you’re talking about the unionized, federalized, militarized, Nazi-like police officers in my city who were laid off due to budget shortfalls, and were subsequently hired back with a Federal GRANT (not even a loan) and who stand outside of bailed-out banks defending them and abusing the protesting people?

    rumor has it that barry and moochie, aka barhetoric insane obeyme and mariechelle obamantoinette, as well as the sidwell friends first kids, are planning on saving all leftovers from the wednesday night parties, the maui and ski and marhta’s and mumbai and on and on vacations, the out of town flown in white house chef dinners, the sidwell friends schools japanese menu on pearl harbor day meal, etc etc etc, and donate them to homeless shelters as a symbolic gesture for them poor folks who have been voting for dems for the past 50 or so years and still have no hope, much less any change..

    I watched it also and Mr. West is just like all the other liberals out there answering questions with answers that make no sense of any kind. I got sick watch Hannity and West acting so polite over one another. Hannity you can do better than that. Just call it like it is. Besides with friends like West who the heck need enemies?

      Hannity, you‘ve been hanging around O’Reilly too much. You are turning into his twin, a couple of RINO’s.
      You really need to get some fire in your belly if that is possible and delineate yourself from those who are profoundly trying to destroy America and its people. Hopefully, you are not on the verge of becoming a sell out.

      West is part of the liberal left, who like Obama are bent on destroying America. They are not our friends, and to engage them in discourse is not going to solve any of the problems or issues. There is no middle ground here.

    I watched this last night. West spoke in sound bytes. Little catch words like “oligarchs” throughout his robotic sentences. He offers no substance, only red meat for lefties. The occasional smirk on his face as he feigned civility. If you’ve ever observed a Neo-Nazi speaking, West was the black counterpart of that style of speech.
