Cost Of A No-Fly Zone? $1 Billion. Benefit to U.S. Economy? $35 Billion. Saving Libyan Lives? Priceless.

CNBC’s Erin Burnett doles out pre-market news and speculation on the U.S. and world financial markets each morning during her ‘Business Before The Bell’ segment on MSNBC. Oil was once again in the spotlight this morning and we heard the price of oil had stabilized as OPEC hinted they might be open to pumping a little more to make up for any supply disruptions due to the recent unrest in the Middle East. (Why wouldn’t you pump more oil? The price has jumped substantially and you can make a killing right now.)
Talk of stabilization in the current oil price was welcome news, but when the conversation drifted over to discussions of a possible NATO enforced, no-fly zone over Libya, we learned some of the economic reality of the proposed action.
Projected cost to maintain a no-fly zone over northern Libya – just the coast line where the oil terminals deliver the goods – One billion dollars a year. (We currently spend two billion dollars each week fighting in Afghanistan.)
If the no-fly zone stabilizes the region and the oil markets, the price of crude is projected to drop $10-15 dollars per barrel, and we just take the low end of the of that projection and drop the price of oil by $10 a barrel, that represents a $35 billion dollar benefit to the American economy.
Aside from the potential humanitarian benefits garnered by stopping Qaddafi from bombing his own people, as an investment, the no-fly zone appears to be a pretty solid idea.

Posted on March 8, 2011 at 1:40pmLet’s see, we got into Korea to help a group in a civil war, and 60 years later we are still there. We got into Viet Nam to protect a group against a civil war, and we lost 55,000 men and 9 years, plus 30 years of self loathing by the left. We got into Iraq to protect a group against a civil war (Iraq said Kuwait is theirs, much like China and Taiwan), and 20 years later, we are still there. Afghanistan, Ditto, and will be there until hell freezes over paying for schools, roads and dams. Now people want to get into Libya. For What? Oil? That was the argument in Iraq made vehemently by the left, but never happened. Let’s try minding our own business for a change and protecting our southern border from invasion and violence.

The Dems–Obow included–have opposed our being in Iraq and Afghanistan though their previous governments were a threat to US security, but think going against Libya is okay? What was the Left’s battle cry–“No blood for oil”?
How about, “No blood for the price of oil,” become ours? We have no stake; how much oil do we get from Libya, anyway?

Our troops are in the middle of an “Islamic Crusade” to end the Western way of life. When they are killed in the name of Islam, Mr. Obama (”um uh, make one thing clear”) will make the fatal mistake of marginalizing the attack and move to reconciliation without consequence. This in not a POTUS for America. This is not the POTUS for Freedom. Though people say it would only cost 1 billlion a year, it would actually cost much more. Additionally, Qaddafi could legitimately see a no fly zone as a blockade, which is an act of war. Our military could absolutely defeat his forces, but an actual war would cost a huge amount more. We can’t afford to do that. Posted on March 8, 2011 at 8:46pmThere is something to remember here, and that is the law of unintended consequences. What message will a no fly zone send to our Saudi “allies”? It might spook them, because they might be facing a similar challenge in the near future. Right now, the last thing we need is to isolate anyone else in this region. A no fly zone isn’t a simple as it sounds. We would have to bomb their anti-aircraft weapons, and then shoot down their fighters. This might make the army/air force more a friend to Qaddafi than they are now. I liken it to a family squabble. I can beat on my brother, but if you do it, then we will join together just to kick your butt. We need to just sit this one out, two wars at once is enough.

How can we tell other countries what to do while we are not able to correct our own difficulties? No matter what we do with Libya, we will wind up with the short end of the stick. Regardless of which side we back, if the other side wins, we will be hated. Better the devil we know than the devil we don’t know. How do we know that the rebels will not replace the current regime with one which is led by Alqida or, the Taliban? We must walk a fine line without being dragged into the struggle.
