Cost of Going Green? Wind Farm Turbines Slaughter Bats — and That’s Bad for Crop Prices!

New green technologies look to be backfiring for Pennsylvania farmers, and the nocturnal creatures who take care of their pest problem. Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:
“The 420 wind turbines now in use across Pennsylvania killed more than 10,000 bats last year — mostly in the late summer months, according to the state Game Commission. That’s an average of 25 bats per turbine per year, and the Nature Conservancy predicts as many as 2,900 turbines will be set up across the state by 2030.
This is a bad time to be a bat.
It may seem like a good thing to those who fear the flying mammals, but the wind farm mortality rate is an acute example of how harnessing natural energy can lead to disruptions in the circle of life — and the cycle of business. This chain of events mixes biology and economics: Bat populations go down, bug populations go up and farmers are left with the bill for more pesticide and crops (which accounts for those pricey tomatoes in Kansas).”
The Post-Gazette goes on to point out a Science Magazine report that calculated that bats saved farmers about $74 per acre, and a total cost across the state estimated to be $277.9 million. Technology producers are looking to develop solutions to deter bats from the turbines like high-pitch sound generators that keep creatures from coming too close.
“All these options cost money,” said Ms. Librandi Mumma, and it can be a tough sell to the private industry handing over the information that helps in the research. “You don‘t want to penalize the hand that’s giving you the data.”
The energy producers could be labeled killing machines, as the state Game Commission report estimates that in addition to bats, 1,680 birds were killed in the turbines last year.
Here’s a report by KCTS-TV from last year:

Posted on July 19, 2011 at 12:06amI live in Pittsburgh and posted this article on my Face Book page. I figured these windwills are responsible for 17.5 trillion more insect living a year because of al the bats they kill. This has to have a substantial impact on the natural environment, there is no way around it. This is particularly dangerous when you consider mosquito’s carrying West Nile virus, Malaria and even finding MRSA in their blood.
Report Post »I can barely stand the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, as they do nothing but BASH the Marcellus Gas Industry trying to get going here. This paper is committed to this stuff, using loosely gathered statistics and portraying whatever horrific story they wish to pretend is reality and report it as factual. Meanwhile, you get an alarming fact that DIRECTLY effects the environmental life cycle in the area and you get this story.
OH yeah, they are quick to writ a story about how the shale industry only spent 221 million repairing roads in the area, trying to raise the question, is that enough ?? Are these EVIL gas company’s ripping apart PA roads and having us tax payers take up the bill ?? Cause darn it, they could be using that tax money to build another stupid tunnel under the river, or direct it to one of their pet liberal causes. The Democrats have run this city into the ground, pushed all the business out of the city through regulation and tax, and the city schools some of the worst in the nation. The real question is will people learn from this?

Posted on July 18, 2011 at 8:19pmExactly. The problem with all these initiatives, and frankly any government policy, is that they look short term and fail to account how “X” policy impacts everyone and everything as well as the long term effects. I worked in the Cellular industry and there have been more than a few towers that use Microwave for backhaul that needed to be relocated due to wind farms interrupting line of sight.

Posted on July 18, 2011 at 8:03pmHAWTs do cause problems for birds and bats, they spin so fast and their blades are so long that it’s hard for birds to see and bats to pick up on sonar. VAWTs however, i hear, are much better for them because their blades aren’t spread outwards from the center of the turbine. their blades are straight up and down around the center axis and they don’t have to rotate into the wind, like the hawts.

The are NOT good. Do you know WHY there are so many?
The government, or the evil people behind their establishment on earth, pay exorbitant prices to the land owners for the right to place the windmills on their land.
Could it possibly be that these are NOT for our use and advancement, but to clear the air after a nuclear attack which the elite think will take us all out while they are safe in their underground bunkers? Make sense to me, because they are not good now for ANY LIVING CREATURE GOD made and placed on this earth.
Check it out for yourselves.
GOD BLESS AND PROTECT YOUR KIDS IN JESUS’ NAME, LORD, AMEN.
Report Post »Hemispheres
Posted on July 18, 2011 at 11:49pmThanks, I needed that laugh. Everyone knows that wind turbines actually can’t clear the air after a nuclear attack because they actually SLOW the air. This slower air does not cool as well as fast moving air and global temperatures rise (because lots of “sciencey” stuff happens)–wiping out entire populations of rural, conservative folk. Then, and only then, do the elite rise from their underground bunkers to reign. Using their so-called green technology to, in fact, raise the global temperature. Genius!
