Costly Gasoline Clouds Obama Re-Election Prospects

WASHINGTON (AP) — With gas prices climbing and little relief in sight, President Barack Obama is scrambling to get ahead of the latest potential obstacle to his re-election bid, even as Republicans are making plans to exploit the issue.
No one seems more aware of the electoral peril than Obama himself.
“My poll numbers go up and down depending on the latest crisis, and right now gas prices are weighing heavily on people,” he told Democratic donors in Los Angeles this past week.
In fact, Obama raised the issue unsolicited in a series of town meetings in Virginia, California and Nevada that were ostensibly about his deficit-reduction plan. And he made the gas spike the subject of his weekly radio and Internet address Saturday.
“It’s just another burden when things were already pretty tough,” he said.
As Obama well knows, Americans love their cars and remain heavily dependent on them, and they don’t hesitate to punish politicians when the cost of filling their tanks goes through the roof. Indeed, for presidents, responding to sudden surges is a recurring frustration.
“These gas prices are killing you right now,” Obama said at Facebook headquarters in Palo Alto, acknowledging that many Americans can’t afford new fuel-efficient cars and must drive older models.. For some, he said, the cost of a fill-up has all but erased the benefit of the payroll tax holiday that he and congressional Republicans agreed on last December.
On Saturday, Obama insisted in his radio and Internet address that the best answer is a long-term drive to develop alternatives to fossil fuel. He also renewed calls to end $4 billion in subsidies for oil and gas companies. “Instead of subsidizing yesterday’s energy sources,” he said, “we need to invest in tomorrow’s.”
Republicans contend that high gas prices are the inevitable result of an administration they accuse of stifling domestic drilling, and which placed new curbs on offshore exploration after last spring’s disastrous BP oil spill.
“The administration has declared what can only be described as a war on American energy,” said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.
“Obama is vulnerable on gas prices and the Republicans have and will exploit this as a wedge issue,” said James Thurber, who directs the Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies at American University.
Legislative aides report House Republicans are considering a series of hearings and floor votes on measures to boost domestic oil and gas production when Congress returns from its Easter break.
Meantime, Obama has ordered his Justice Department to form a task force to look for fraud or manipulation in the oil markets. It will “root out” any abuses, he told a town meeting in Reno, Nev. The president is among those who’ve said the surging price for crude is caused by worries about political upheaval in the Arab world and increasing demand from China and elsewhere.
Still, Americans have a tradition of holding the party in power responsible for rising gas costs.
Obama’s focus on the issue came as a New York Times/CBS News poll published Thursday found that 70 percent of the public believes the country is headed in the wrong direction. That followed a March AP-GfK survey reflecting widespread discontent over the economy, with just 15 percent seeing an economic improvement the previous month. Through the spring, Obama’s approval numbers in several polls have slipped.
“Gas prices are a major factor in his slide … along with unemployment and his talk about cuts and tax increases to deal with deficits and debt,” Thurber said.
The national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline is currently $3.84, almost a dollar higher than a year ago. In many places, it’s well over $4.
The gas price debate has a sense of déjà vu to it, Obama notes. Vows to end dependence on expensive oil imports go back to Richard Nixon’s “Project Independence”, a 1973 response to the Arab oil embargo, and this has been a popular refrain by presidents of both parties over the last 40 years.
“Whenever gas prices shoot up, like clockwork, you see politicians racing to the cameras, waving three-point plans for two dollar gas,” Obama said in Saturday’s address. But when prices subside, those plans are quietly shelved.
Even calls to target price gouging have a familiar ring. When gas hit $3 a gallon in 2006, George W. Bush launched a probe, declaring Americans “don’t want and will not accept … manipulation of the market. And neither will I.”
Seven months later, Bush took what he called a “thumping” in mid-term elections. Of course, other issues — especially Iraq — played a big role. But Obama can’t help pondering that example, and wondering what rising gas prices could do to his hopes for a second term.

Posted on April 24, 2011 at 10:47amMr. Obama has stated at an earlier date that he wanted higher gas prices in order to force Americans into using alternate fuels for their cars, which makes it very difficult to believe when he starts pointing his finger at everyone else and says that it is their fault. The EPA comes up with new regulations making it harder to not only drill for oil, but natural gas and dig for coal. Because of the dramatic increase of government borrowing since Mr. Obama was elected the value of the dollar has dropped, which has a direct influence on the cost of gasoline. Meanwhile Mr. Obama gives billions of dollars to Brazil for them to explore for oil and for them to conduct off shore drilling. This is hypocritical at best. I believe that if there wasn’t an election approaching Mr. Obama would be very pleased with the high cost of gasoline since not only he, but several of his advisers have been promoting increasing the cost of gasoline in the past. He just didn’t want it to happen at a time that might influence his re-election bid.

When I saw him make that statement on TV yesterday, the vision of Jimmy Carter, in his sweater, telling the citizens of the US that there was no more oil! Followed immediately with shortages and long gas lines, 55 MPH speed limits, etc.
This nation has a lot of problems, most are the results of Congress meddling in a free market and fixing things. I’m not an expert in anything, but if I wanted to increases jobs and gas prices, I would open drilling anywhere oil companies wanted. Short circuit the permits to a 30 day process and make anyone wanting to sue, pay their own costs.
I doubt that spending tax money we don’t have to come up with a magical new energy source is not going to fix anything, except the chances for the GOP to take the WH in 2012.

Shouldn’t be so hard when you have a treasonous President/Admin. I like what Trump has to say about the oil problem & what he’d do and I agree. But yes, this has been their plan since the beginning, so actually he’s probably happy about it. But…..Obama has a plan and God has a plan. What really ****** me off is that GM took $700 billion in taxpayer bailout, and pissed it away on that abomination of a green car. Green at all costs, no matter what. Built by lazy a$$ featherbedding UAW thugs. And when GM showed a profit last quarter, they were thumping their chests at “their” accomplishment, and handing out fat bonuses to the UAW. I notice that they didn’t offer any bonuses to the taxpayers who were forced to bail them out, against our will.
This is the worst kind of crooked scam, and pure thuggery and theft. I will NEVER buy a GM product, and urge all REAL Americans to do the same. For those of you who already have GM, I ask you to make a vow; NEVER AGAIN.
Believe it or not, if you want to support American jobs, there are many import car producers who employ as many–if not more–Americans than GM. They have plants here. Honda, Toyota, Subaru, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and more. Real American workers too, not lazy union thugs.

Report Post »As was previously stated by another poster, one of the big reasons why oil is so expensive right now is the fact that the U.S. dollar has nearly collapsed in value and it’s still being used as the world currency for oil purchases….Need oil? You need to poney up more bucks because they’re worth a LOT less in the world markets now…Using the gold standard as a basis for estimating the value of the dollar, our currency has fallen by over FIFTY PERCENT since Barry took office, mainly because of the inflation by the federal reserve…they more than DOUBLED the amount of currency in circulation, and now that inflation is coming home to hit us hard in the wallet. If you want to blame anyone “Smitty”, go look in the mirror!

Yes Republicans WERE up in 08 until Gas prices fell. The lower prices dropped concern for energy independence (A Conservative value). Yes we are being robbed blind on our dollar value. But as usual he got the process all wrong because he wanted the gas prices to match those in Europe with gas that actually cost only about $2/gallon, with FIVE DOLLARS WORTH OF NEW TAXES tacked on to the base price, just like in Europe. The effect right now is the same, tying an anchor to the economy…zero real growth and zero real new jobs…But poor Barry can’t gobble up the taxes he wants in order to pay for his additional welfare programs for all the people he put out of work….Time for a clean sweep in Congress and the White House!

It’s just one of those places where he is not taxing the middle or lower income Americans because we all know that it is only the rich people who have to drive older cars that are less efficient on gas than those that have lower incomes. It is only the poor who can afford $25 to $50k to purchase a new hybrid or electric car. I truly wonder if Obama’s limos, hilocopters, or Air Force One are hybrids?

During the period of roughly February 1992 to mid 1994, I was making frequent trips to Moscow, Russia, in the process of starting a software development joint-venture company with some people from the Russian scientific community. One of the men in charge on the Russian side was named V. M.; he had a wife named T.M.
V. was a level-headed scientist while his wife was rather deeply committed to the losing Communist cause – a cause she obviously was not abandoning.
One evening, during a trip early in 1992, the American half of our venture were invited to V. & T.’s Moscow flat as we were about to return to the States. The party went well and we had the normal dinner discussions.
As the evening wore on, T. developed a decidedly rough anti-American edge – one her husband tried to quietly rein in.
The bottom line of the tirade she started against the United States went something like this:
“You Americans always like to think that you have the perfect government and your people are always so perfect. Well then, why haven’t you had a woman president by now? You had a chance to vote for a woman vice-president and you didn’t do it.”
The general response went something along the lines that you don’t vote for someone just because of their sex. Besides, you don’t vote for vice-president, but the president and vice-president as a ticket.
“Well, I think you are going to be surprised when you get a black president very soon.”
The consensus we expressed was that we didn’t think there was anything innately barring that. The right person at the right time and sure, America would try to vote for the right person, be he or she black or not.
“What if I told you that you will have a black president very soon and he will be a Communist?”
The out-of-the-blue remark was met by our stares. She continued, “Well, you will; and he will be a Communist.”
It was then that the husband unsuccessfully tried to change the subject; but she was on a roll and would have nothing of it. One of us asked, “It sounds like you know something we don’t know.”
“Yes, it is true. This is not some idle talk. He is already born and he is educated and being groomed to be president right now. You will be impressed to know that he has gone to the best schools of Presidents. He is what you call “Ivy League”. You don’t believe me, but he is real and I even know his name. His name is Barack. His mother is white and American and his father is black from Africa. That’s right, a chocolate baby! And he’s going to be your President.”
She became more and more smug as she presented her stream of detailed knowledge and predictions so matter-of-factly – as though all were foregone conclusions. “It’s all been thought out. His father is not an American black so he won’t have that social slave stigma. He is intelligent and he is half white and has been raised from the cradle to be an atheist and a Communist. He’s gone to the finest schools. He is being guided every step of the way and he will be irresistible to America.”
We sat there not knowing what to say. She was obviously very happy that the Communists were doing this and that it would somehow be a thumbing of their collective noses at America: they would give us a black president and he’d be a Communist to boot. She made it quite obvious that she thought that this was going to breathe new life into world Communism. From this and other conversations with her, she always asserted that Communism was far from dead.
She was full of little details about him that she was eager to relate. I thought that maybe she was trying to show off that this truly was a real person and not just hot air.
She rattled off a complete litany. He was from Hawaii. He went to school in California. He lived in Chicago. He was soon to be elected to the legislature. “Have no doubt: he is one of us, a Soviet.”
At one point, she related some sort of San Francisco connection, but I didn‘t understand what the point was and don’t recall much about that. I was just left with the notion that she considered the city to be some sort of a center for their activity here.
Since I had dabbled in languages, I knew a smattering of Arabic. I made a comment: “If I remember correctly, ‘Barack’ comes from the Arabic word for ‘Blessing.’ That seems to be an odd name for an American.” She replied quickly, “Yes. It is ‘African’”, she insisted, “and he will be a blessing for world Communism. We will regain our strength and become the number one power in the world.”
She continued with something to the effect that America was at the same time the great hope and the great obstacle for Communism. America would have to be converted to Communism and Barack was going to pave the way.
So, what does this conversation from 1992 prove?
Well, it’s definitely anecdotal. It doesn’t prove that Obama has had Soviet Communist training nor that he was groomed to be the first black American president, but it does show one thing that I think is very important. It shows that Soviet Russian Communists knew of Barack from a very early date. It also shows that they truly believed among themselves that he was raised and groomed Communist to pave the way for their future. This report on Barack came personally to me from one of them long before America knew he existed.
Although I had never before heard of him, at the time of this conversation Obama was 30+ years old and was obviously tested enough that he was their anticipated rising star.

One of two things will happen here.
1 – Gas will skyrocket and hit $8.00 per gallon and then… right before the election – a MIRACLE will happen and Obama will come to the rescue and look like a hero – get elected – we’re screwed.
2 – Gas will skyrocket and the public will become SO agitated that they do stupid things and Obama will declare marshal law – and we will have to vote Obama the president because we would never change leaders (and I use that term lightly) in a crisis.
So – as someone rightly said – The game will not be won by a series of small gains and not by one big hail Mary pass.
