Could 4-Year-Old Heidi Hankins Be the Next Einstein?

There are a lot of people who believe that they are smarter than almost everyone else. Usually, this idea is unsubstantiated. However, in the case of 4-year-old Heidi Hankins, the data actually backs it up. Hankins has scored an IQ of 159 – just one point beneath the estimated IQ of Albert Einstein, father of the Theory of Relativity, and comparable to the estimated IQ of Stephen Hawking, one of the most noted physicists of the modern age.
Yet scientists say the score shouldn’t be seen as a necessary indicator that Hankins is born for greatness:
As many media outlets have reported, Heidi Hankins of Winchester, England, scored only a point below Einstein and physicist Stephen Hawking on standardized intelligence tests. While there’s no doubt that Hankins is bright (according to reports, she read at an 8-year-old level, and could count to 40, by age 2), it’s not possible to compare IQ across age groups, according to Frank Lawlis, the supervisory psychologist for American Mensa.
“All you’re doing with IQ testing is testing within a certain age group,” Lawlis told LiveScience, explaining, “You’re saying the 4-year-old is smarter than 99.5 or 99.8 of [her] age group, but that doesn’t mean you can compare to another age group.”
In fact, IQ scores in general have been rising over time, Lawlis said. IQ tests are always standardized so that the average score is 100. Higher scorers are brighter (at least in the domains measured by IQ testing). But in a widely noted phenomenon called the “Flynn effect,” new generations taking older IQ tests score higher than 100 on average. There are multiple theories for this effect, including improved childhood nutrition, increasingly stimulating environments, and a greater number of children who are familiar with standardized tests and thus perform better.
“This is kind of a theoretical thought,” Lawlis said, “but one day we may all be as smart as Einstein, and then Einstein would become average.”
This segment from Sky News on Hankins features commentary on what the best approach for teaching children with high aptitude is:

However, some of the most intelligent people with books, theories, etc. have NO COMMON SENSE. They don’t know the commonest things to get along in life. Posted on April 16, 2012 at 10:32pmThe IQ test is not an exact science. My kids were tested 2-3 times at different ages in order to qualify for various programs for the highly gifted. Report Post »AxelPhantom
Posted on April 16, 2012 at 11:58pmHI
I have a couple of “gifted” children myself.
Here is a decent explanation….
“Intelligence Quotient (IQ): This is a mathematical formula that is supposed to be a measure of a person’s intelligence. When it was first created, it was defined as the ratio of mental age (MA) to chronological age (CA) multiplied by 100 (thus IQ = MA/CA x 100). For example, if a 20 year old answers the questions like a “typical” or “average” 20 year old would, the person would have an IQ of 100 (20/20 x 100 = 100). More recently psychologists decided that it’s better look at relative IQ score – how a person scores relative to other people the same age. Now people get assigned an average score of 100 and then we compare their actual scores on the series of intelligence tests to this average score in terms of a standard deviation. For example, if you score 2 standard deviations above the mean (mean being 100), then you would score a 130 since each standard deviation is 15 points (that’s just the formula used).”
Children are measured differently than adults. Intelligence and IQ are not necessarily the same. An IQ test is a tool; a means of measuring the intangible; the resulting number can only be as accurate as the test is in measuring (think of surveys as an example) IMHO there is no test yet invented that is capable of measuring the complete package of intelligence.

One of the definitions of intelligence as outlined in psychology is the ability of an individual to adapt to an environment that is irrelevant to previous experience or knowlege. In other words, if someone was raised in a house with no media or information and had never set foot outdoors, suddenly found themselves in the middle of the Rocky Mountains how quickly do they learn to survive in that environment? This makes true intelligence virtually impossible to “test” accurately as previous experience and knowledge are individualized.

Posted on April 17, 2012 at 12:44am@ Hi:
Actually, if your children continue to learn more than their average cohort and at an accelerated rate, then their IQs WILL, of necessity and by the very definition of IQ, increase. If they know 20% more than their cohort at 12, their 12 year old IQ will be 120. If they know 30% more than their cohort at age 18, their 18 year old IQ will be 130. If they know 40% more than their cohort at age 25, then their 25 year old IQ will be 140.
No one ever said IQ was designed or intended to be a fixed value throughout life.
Take Michio Kaku or Neil deGrasse Tyson and lock him in a closet for 20 years giving him only the minimal necessary nutrition and no intellectual stimulation whatsoever, he’ll come out dumber than a box of rocks. Lock them in that closet TOGETHER and they’ll come out with the cure for cancer and an end to aging, because they would continue to intellectually stimulate one another and their minds would stay sharp, if not, as I am implying, get even sharper.
