Could Christ’s Coffin Have Finally Been Discovered in Jerusalem?

Any Christian will tell you that Christ’s body is irretrievable, given the resurrection. But could his empty coffin have been found? The Daily Mail has a story that suggests as much may be the case.

The story begins with a controversial archaeological find from the 1980′s colloquially called the “Jesus Family Tomb” — a 1st century building that archaeologists believed contained the remains of the family of Christ. This particular find spurred controversy because one implication was that Christ may have been married and raised children (presumably with Mary Magdalene). Protests by Orthodox Jews who objected to the disturbance of a burial site ended any official investigation into the building prematurely…until now.

James Tabor, a scriptural scholar from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and his partner Simcha Jacobovici, a documentary filmmaker, recently obtained permission to do further excavation around the site of the “Jesus Family Tomb.” They found another, more carefully hidden tomb, jokingly dubbed the “Patio Tomb” because its discovery indicates that it would sit right beneath the Patio of the Jesus Family Tomb.

Coffin That May Have Belonged to Jesus Christ Unearthed by Archaeologists

And what was in the “Patio Tomb?” Apparently, a series of limestone “Bone Boxes” dated to the 1st century, one of which bears a lid with the inscription “Divine Jehovah, raise up, raise up.” Moreover, it carries an image of a fish with a stick figure in its mouth, which scholars believe may be designed to represent Jonah and the Whale, one of the first explicitly Christian prophets, and a symbol of Christ’s resurrection:

If Yeshua was not the Son of God and raised from the dead, the people that knew him best, spent day and night with him for years, would NOT have gone to the their deaths via stoning, burning, beheadings, inverted crucifixion, etc.

I also doubt one of the chief persecutors, Paul, would have been willing to have his head lopped off had he not had a face to face meeting with him. These men had chances to spare their lives, if they would deny Him, and yet were faithful unto horrid deaths. They knew the TRUTH.

Then you consider that Yeshua’s arrvial as Messiah in Jerusalem was prophecied in Daniel 9 TO THE DAY and there can be no doubt the Bible and He were of God. (See here: http://tinyurl.com/83elpj8 ) In Dan9, 483 years (of 360 days ea.) were to pass between the command to rebuild Jerusalem until Messiah arrived and would be “cut off”.

Artaxerxes Longimanus gave the order on March 14, 445BC. Yeshua entered Jerusalem on Palm Sunday April 6th, 32 AD (173,880 days or 483 years)! Some will say those prophecies in Daniel are so accurate, that they had to have been written later, but consider that it was apart of the Septuagent greek translation 300 years before Christ!

Bible prophecy. 100% accurate over 66 books, pened by 40 men over thousands of years.
Yeshua was the Son of God, he DID die for us as THE perfect sacrifice to take away sin, and he DID rise again so that we will too one day.

if he wasn’t the messiah, his followers wouldn’t have died for him??? really? Does that mean that Jim Jones, David Koresh, or Marshall Applewhite were also Messiahs? Cause their followers died for them as well. You‘re gonna have to bring something to the argument other than that if you want to convince people you’re right. If I ask a Chevy salesman why Chevy is so good and he brings out a brochure and tells me, because it says so in this brochure, well that doesn’t really mean much does it. You can’t quote the bible as a source of truth for the bible!!!

Mavs, Many will die for what they believe to be true but no one will die for what they know to be a lie. These disciples knew Jesus, spent 3 years with him, saw him crucified and saw him raised from the dead. If they knew all this to be a lie they would have remained locked up in the their homes. They had no riches to gain, they were ridiculed, beaten, stoned and eventually killed for the faith they professed. A person does not willingly die a torturous death for what they know to be a lie.

What is that all about! Jonah lived around the time of Jeroboam II (793-753 B.C.) Why does this story refer to him as a Christian prophet when he lived long before the earthly ministry of Jesus Christ? This whole story smells fishy (no pun intended).

Not sure what that has to do with the story, but anyway… Revelation 22:18-19 is clearly referring to the *PROPHECY of THIS book*, meaning the Book of Revelation. There was no “The Bible” at the time that was recorded, and other books from the NT were likely written after that point. There’s also a very similar wording in Deuteronomy, so should we reject all of the NT because of that? Before you refer to Joseph Smith as a pedophile and condemn the Book of Mormon based on a faulty understanding of scripture that would also condemn the New Testament, you might want to learn more about what you are saying. Your salvation depends on it.

If GOD was as powerful and real like you guys think then Satan would not have tempted Eve because Satan would not have been there. The verse you quote is in the Bible, that is correct, it is in Revelation, however scholars believe that the Book of John was written AFTER the book of Revelation thereby John would have violated his own Revelation. Jehovah is historically a fairly recent construct as others have said taking the consonants of YHWH and adding the vowels from Adonai. The newer biblical translations use LORD all in caps instead of YHWH and Lord in lower case for Adonai in the Old Testament. The Mormon Blaze included this story because of the phrase adding in passing: “one implication was that Christ may have been married and raised children (presumably with Mary Magdalene).” And Mormons believe men have to be married to gain godhood! If He wasn’t, that throws a monkey wrench into His becoming a god. There is absolutely no proof Jesus survived His crucifixion or that He married anyone before or after it.

Nicea‘s council didn’t rewrite any of the biblical text. That’s blatantly false! We have the entire Old Testament from the Dead Sea Scrolls (3rd to 1st century BC), and 25,000 ancient manuscripts and fragments of the New Testament text as well as over 32,000 citations of its books written prior to the Nicaean Council, in Greek, Latin and Syriac. The list of extant New Testament books goes back to the Muratorian Canon from 170 AD. Biblical scholar Dr. Norman Geisler writes (Introduction to the Bible; p.420 ) that all 27 books of the NT were written, copied, and began to be disseminated among the churches before the end of the 1st century. that’s about 2 centuries before Nicea.

Would the story of Christ be any less inspiring if he were a mortal man, who taught peace and love in the face of roman tyranny, instead of some mythical being?

Pslams 82.6 says Ye are Gods, does that mean that we are the true gods of this planet, I believe it does, it jibes with other religions ideas of man being the all powerful being.

I know you self styled christians will call me vile names, in the name of your fine christian tolerant belief system, proves my point, when you take a myth to seriously you become entrenched into an intolerant position.

Psalms 82:6 I said, ‘You are “gods”; you are all sons of the Most High.’ You notice that gods is not capitalized. We were all made in the image of God..as were Adam and Eve..but they believed Satan’s lie that they were inferior and so became inferior..They were the children of the fall..and by inheritance so are we..only by the saving grace of Yashua can we be redeemed. YHWH chose His elect from the foundations of the world..one can only go to Him if they have been called. Yashua is the only judge..It is true that we can tell a tree by its fruits..but even Yashua said..I did not come to judge the world but to save it..but even so.. My word judges you. For this is love..to obey my commands..

Thank God they found the box where Jesus is. Of course there is going to be the little problem of the Biblical account of his burial. Let’s just write a new chapter for the Bible, cross out all the references to the original burial and resurrection, then it will be correct.
This is typical for phony believers – God lives in a box and all we have to do is open it and let Him out.

I don’t believe Jesus was buried in a coffin.
a man named Joseph, from Arimathea, asked special permission from the Roman Governor, Pontius Pilate to take possession of the body.6 . The Bible tells us that Joseph took the body down, cleaned it, wrapped it in a linen cloth, laid it in a newly carved tomb and rolled a rock in front of it.8 Since Jesus had made the claim that “three days after his death, he would rise and live again”9, the Jewish priest asked Pilate to appoint a guard. According to the book of Matthew, Pilate declined, but gave the priest permission to use their guards instead

Allow enough time for some of the body paint to transfer to the cloth. Unwrap the cloth and lay it flat. The image will be distorted and not look like a normal human face. Much less your face. Yo Ashes,

Blessings …scripture say’s that Jesus was nothing special to look at.. forgive me but can not recall the verses or exact words, but this would fit with the humility of His birth and entire life. His ministry was about his words and deeds, not His possibility of a modeling career ( joking). I know what you are saying, the figure looks chiseled out of granite, and we probably ALL wonder what He looks like.
Another reason why this story is foolish … NOBODY expected Jesus to “rise up”. People don’t rise up after being torn to pieces, hung and speared. These people were defeated at His death, as I would have been. It was not until they saw him alive that that defeat became victory….yeah baby!!!

People want to see Jesus, YOU WILL … his beauty is not in His flesh, it is in His light, too glorious to look at in our flesh … and that gets another yeah baby!!!

@DMAC225 – Honestly, you sound as if you are sincere in your beliefs and thus, I‘ll take the time to correct a few discrepancies in what you’ve been told about Joseph Smith.

First, yes, God the Father and Jesus Christ did speak to Joseph Smith. However, he was not a “convicted felon” as you’ve been told. In fact, he was never convicted of anything he was falsely accused of. But being falsely accused is nothing new to many mighty men in history.

Second, the golden plates were not “instructions” but rather the writings of ancient prophets who lived in the Americas. You see, we believe that God can speak to all of his faithful, regardless of where they live. What was written in the golden plates is what is now called the Book of Mormon. Its another testament of Jesus Christ – a companion to the Bible (the highlight of the Book of Mormon is when Jesus Christ visits his people on the American continent).

Third, God did not send an angel to translate the golden plates, he provided Joseph Smith with what is called a Urim and Thummim. Heb. term that means Lights and Perfections. An instrument prepared of God to assist man in obtaining revelation from the Lord and in translating languages. See Ex. 28:30; Lev. 8:8; Num. 27:21; Deut. 33:8; 1 Sam. 28:6; Ezra 2:63; Neh. 7:65.

Finally, I agree that all of this defies logic, but that is why “faith” is so important in ANY religion – even science (many scientific theories must be trusted in prior to being proven).

@DMAC225 – Oh yeah, sorry for missing your question… honestly I doubt that this coffin belonged to Christ. Mostly because after he was crucified, I imagine the sepulchre in which Christ was laid after being wrapped in clean linen cloth was more of a room than a coffin… but I guess a coffin could have been in the room – but it doesn’t really matter. What matters is that Christ DID rise up again… the greatest truth in all the world. I love how its described by an angel in Luke 24:5-6 where he says:

“Why seek ye the living among the dead? He is not here, but is risen!”

Anyhow, to answer your question more specifically, a coffin, tomb or sepulchre would be needed because his body was not to be risen until the third day.

Christians are always under attack. How many times are we blamed as being intolerant and spoken out against. I do it gladly but do have a hard time turning the other cheek. There is no coffin for Jesus. Doesn’t make sense. Also some people have nothing better to do than “troll” sites they dislike to tell you to quit pushing your views on them and to tell you to stop infringing on free speech. Those who doubt spread doubt most.

Oh, this is just more of Simcha Jacobovici’s crap. The naked archeologist…He has a way of spinning some of the greatest fairy tales vaguely based on a minor fact…Quite amusing actually, but I wouldn’t put any stock in him…

FYI — “Divine Jehovah, raise up, raise up.” is faked. Jehovah is a made up term using the German scholarship of the 19th century and Jewish reverence for the Holy Name of God as revealed to Moses (YHVH) The Name is too holy to be pronounced, so Jews say “Adonai” in its place (or ha-shame – the Name).

YHVH (yud heh vav heh) would be at most the Hebrew inscription. Give it vowels for Adonia when the Massoretic scribes pointed the Hebrew text so as not to loose the pronunciation in the Middle Ages. Now you have Yehovah, or in German Jehovah since the German “J” is the same sound as our “Y” in English, and the German “W” is equivalent in sound to our “V.”

Simcha Jacobivici is a laughable “archeologist”. He bends and twists credibility beyond recognition taking liberties with the facts that are inexcusable. This ossuary has been proven by credible scholars as not having anything to do with the events of Christ’s passion and death on the cross.

Strobel bases his entire argument on the “Liar, Lunatic, or Lord“ premise which is a logical fallacy known as ”false dilemma”. There are many possibilities that might also be the case which are not represented sincerely in his book. The only thing that supports the idea of the Christian bible as a divinely inspired text that is true and complete is Faith. Logic and science simply do not support it.

An ossuary would be used after the body had decayed into just skeletal remains. Until then, there was no need for an ossuary. This is obviously a fake for the black-market antiquities market.

Christ‘s body didn’t decay for any bones to be placed in any ossuary.

Bingo…not only wasn’t Christ dead long enough for his body to decay, his bones cleaned and placed in an ossuary, but there is an active black market in Israel that forges and fabricates antiquities. Let’s also remember this same “jesus tomb” contained what was another “jesus ossuary” that Jacobivici swears contained Christ’s remains. This was the “Jesus, brother of James, son of Joseph” ossuary in the same location. Common hebrew names and lineages of the time. So Jacobivici now wants us to dump that one, and believe this one instead.

Interesting, but it‘s unlikely we’ll know exactly who it was intended for. For those interested Biblical Archaeological Review is a fascinating monthly read.
