Could Google Street View Cars be Used to Plot Terror Attacks in Israel?

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel says it is considering ways to allow Google Street View to photograph Israeli cities, despite concerns the popular service could be used to plot terror attacks.
An official statement says a team of Israeli Cabinet ministers instructed experts Monday to work with Google to find a safe way to implement the feature “as soon as possible.”
Street View allows users to virtually tour locations on a map. It is already available in 27 countries. Google uses special vehicles with panoramic cameras to take ground-level, 3-D images.
The feature has sparked intense debate about personal privacy in other countries, but in Israel, officials are concerned about putting unprecedented information about potential terrorism targets on the Internet.
This isn‘t the first time Google’s Street View cars have come under scrutiny. Many questioned the cars last year after it was revealed they collected data from open Wi-Fi connections they passed while snapping pictures throughout the world. Some even referred to it as as the “Wi-Spy” fiasco.
Google declined to comment regarding Israel’s plans.

Posted on February 21, 2011 at 11:24pmThe Jewish for Justice organization is bragging about taking Glenn Beck down. I sent them a message and told them they shouldn’t even consider themselves a Jewish organizaton. Their funded by George Soro’s. They claim it was okay for George Soro‘s to make a comparison between FOX and Nazi’s but it was wrong when Glenn did it. Time to send them a message…

Posted on February 21, 2011 at 12:13pmThat is a good point, cops/security are suspicious of people staking out public targets and doing surveillance, but you can do it all now from a computer in front of a terrorist.

Posted on February 21, 2011 at 4:56pmSeriously, what is the google car doing that a person with a $30 digital camera cannot? It’s not like they are providing continuous live feeds from the cameras. Hey and if the whole middle east gets into a war and blows them selves up “street view” may be the only way to remember what it used to look like.

Posted on February 21, 2011 at 11:22pmHaving the physical location and general outlay of the area is only the first step. It still takes boots on the ground to surveil the traffic patterns and conduct ‘social networking’.
Secondly, the terrorists need simply purchase detailed satellite imagery taken from the same birds that we’ve bought stuff from in the past.
But, wait… Google has already accumulated all that data and is now the one-stop-shopping giant of personal information. With GPS enabled photography, it would be easy to envision hundreds of drive-by snapshots (as is already happening) that would provide time and exact location. Detailed maps with GPS info. An entire network of Buzz, Facebook, Twitter, etc., to provide a mosaic on intel.
Not only is Google making terrorism easy, but the entire monetizing of this digital age has.
Fortunately, the good guys get a vote and they are using this technology to their advantage as well. So, Rune, you are correct about bad guys getting easy surveillance.
