Could New Cardinal Timothy Dolan Become the First American Pope?

Will Cardinal Timothy Dolan become the Next Pope?

Will American Cardinal Timothy Dolan become the first American pope? This is a question that found its way into observers’ minds of late, as the Archbishop of New York, along with 21 of his fellow Catholic leaders, was elevated to cardinal in Rome on Saturday.

As The Blaze mentioned over the weekend, some Italian and American media outlets have been wondering if Dolan has, due to his charismatic nature and appealing qualities, a chance at becoming the church’s top clergy member.

“Dolan is already being touted by some Vatican experts as a possible future candidate to become the first American pope,” reported MSNBC over the weekend. And and Sunday, ABC News produced a video report exploring this very same subject:

video platform video management video solutions video player

As we noted in our previous report, Americans are traditionally not considered papal contenders. After all, the U.S. dominates in so many other areas that internationally, the notion of a “Super Power Pope” is generally frowned upon.

But it seems Pope Benedict, among other leaders, has taken a special liking to Dolan. The Huffington Post provides some background about New York’s Catholic leader and his appeal:

Dolan, ordained as a parish priest in St. Louis in 1976, held several academic positions at Catholic universities before becoming the auxiliary bishop of St. Louis in 2001. A little over a year later, he was appointed the Archbishop of Milwaukee. In 2009, he became the archbishop of New York and was elected to lead the bishops’ conference in 2010. As head of New York’s church, he oversees Catholic life in Manhattan, the Bronx, Staten Island and many of the city’s suburbs.

Dolan’s elevation will give New York two living cardinals who can vote for a new pope, a rarity in the Catholic church. The other is Cardinal Edward Egan, the former archbishop of New York, who was elevated in February of 2001. Egan turns 80 in April. The move by the pope to promote Dolan while his predecessor remains of voting age is a break with tradition, which church observers say shows how much the pope favors New York’s Catholic leader.

Will Cardinal Timothy Dolan become the Next Pope?

Dolan, himself, is aware that there is some papal buzz over his potential future consideration (although ABC News calls it “a long shot”). When asked about the issue on Saturday, he said, “Io non parlo inglese,“ which translates to ”I don’t speak English.” Clearly, he’s not interested in commenting on the matter — but that hasn’t stopped people from chattering about it.

Considering that there’s no telling how long it will be until the next pope is sought out, taking such a humble stance is probably best. While the odds are stacked against Dolan, there’s no telling what the future could hold.

After reading many of the comments here I felt it necessary to share with all of you a wonderful resource for learning the truth about the Catholic faith. It’s super easy to remember too:

    http://www.catholic.com

They also have a call-in show and a podcast you can download in iTunes. There is also a forum you can search like Google for common questions. Instead of spreading rumors and falsehoods, seek the truth. Two of the Ten Commandments say, “Thou shall not lie,“ and ”You shall not testify falsely against your neighbor.” Before you condemn the Catholic Church, learn the truth.

“There are not one hundred people in the United States who hate The Catholic Church, but there are millions who hate what they wrongly perceive the Catholic Church to be.”
    ― Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen

    O my Jesus
    Forgive us ours sins,
save us from the fires of Hell,
    lead all souls to Heaven,
especially those most in need of thy mercy.
    Amen.

I don’t know much about this Dolan other than him standing up to BO on the birth control issue. However, I would say this, the vatican better vet this guy like no other Pope candidate in history. You can be assured one of the supreme goals of the commie is to get a commie in as Pope. And where better to find that guy but in the commie infiltrated American Catholic Church. TROJAN HORSE?? Unless the Vatican is absolutely sure about Dolan I would pass on this guy.

Pope John Paul went to great lengths to ensure the Cardinal pool was jammed packed with Conservatives. Vatican, if you can hear me now, BE VERY CAREFUL!!!!!!!!!

And all this time I was “looking unto Jesus, the AUTHOR and FINISHER of our FAITH, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. “ (Hebrews 12:2)

The problem here is the OBJECT of your faith. IF your faith is in Catholicism (& NOT in Jesus Christ & His finished work on the Cross – the atonement for your sin problem) then your faith is in vain. It (your faith) will lead you to death. Salvation does not come thru the Church – salvation comes through the Cross & is by Grace (God’s unmerited gift to repentant sinners) through Faith (who’s object is in Christ & His finished work) & not by “good” deeds (no man will boast before God of his works). Ephesians 2:8-9, Numbers 21:6-9, & John 3:14-21.

If pointing out error w/ the truth of the Word of God is hate, then I stand in company w/ Jesus Himself who said:

“And to the angel of the church in Pergamos write, ‘These things says He who has the sharp two-edged sword: “I know your works, … BUT I HAVE A FEW THINGS AGAINST YOU, because you have there those who hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed to idols, and to commit sexual immorality. Thus you also have those who hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, WHICH THING I HATE. Repent… (Revelation 2:12-16)

There’s an old Roman saying: “He who goes into the conclave as Pope, comes out a Cardinal.”

In other words, the ones who are most highly touted to be elected the next Pope, aren’t. The Holy Spirit makes the ultimate decision, not a bunch of media pundits!

Whoever expected an obscure Cardinal from Poland to be chosen in 1978?! And the rest is history…

      @Woemat

and that is a matter of opinion and faith….Catholics have believed since the time of the establishment of the Roman Catholic Church..about 340 A.D by the way…that the Pope was ordained by the Holy
Spirit and the will of God revieled through the Council of Cardinals.
the Catholic Church traces the lineage of the Papacy back to the Apostle Peter, whom Jesus stated would be the rock He built His church on….
now, you can have the opinion that your faith is correct in however they choose a chief theologian, if you faith even has one…or you can have any other opinion you like…but it is a matter of faith….but you can‘t spout off that Jesus didn’t annoint Simon Peter as the head of His church on Earth.. and even the early Disciples argued this point…James, Peter, and John constantly struggled with who was in charge..and it wasn’t really until Saul/Paul showed up that Peter seized the reigns Jesus annointed him with and started LEADING the Church.
since that annointing is spelled out for us in the Bible…the Roman Catholic Church believes, as a matter of faith, that the Holy Spirit will continue to annoint who should lead the Church…the will of the Holy Spirit…and thus God…is announced through the Council of Cardinals…
but again…you don’t have to believe that…but don’t bash Catholics for their faith in what they believe to be truth…

      @VRW Conspirator

W/ all due respect, I am not bashing Catholics – I grew up Catholic, ½ of my family is Catholic, I love Catholics & I know something of Catholicism. You are strong in your “faith” toward the Catholic church & its history. I find that a lot among Catholics – strong in Catholic history & the catechism & the “church” dogmas.

But I also find most Catholics to be weak in their knowledge of scripture, which generally translates to a weak faith in what matters – Salvation by grace through faith in Yeshua & His redemptive work (not the church, not Peter, or any of the Apostles, church fathers, or whatever extra-biblical insert here ceremony or piece of trivia).

It breaks my heart to see so many that I love putting their trust in a church, in their Catholicism – in their works, rather than Jesus Christ who alone can save for there is NO other name under heaven by which men are saved (Acts 4:12) & I’m convinced it’s because they know more about Catholic history than they do about the Word of God – & that’s a shame.

Call it bashing if you like, I am not going to stop telling you all the truth because the LORD would have me do no less & because I love you & wish you to be set free from the bondage of religion and a faith w/o the proper object. So you know I do not say that Catholics cannot be saved. However if you are trusting in Catholicism or works, rather than Christ, then I suspect you’ll be surprised on Judgement day.

And w/ all due respect, Paul, not Peter was the Apostle to Rome – so if a vicar was called for by Christ (I’m still waiting for scriptural reference to substantiate that claim) he would be your first Pope.

More importantly (& respectfully), Christ did NOT say Peter would be the rock on which He built His Church (whose Church is it?). Matthew 16:18 is a pun – (see post just below) –

“And I also say to you that you are Petros [piece of rock, little stone – translated as Peter in English] and on THIS [not you] Petra [mass of rock, boulder] I [Christ – not petros] will build My Church.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Peter – probably the Apostle I identify w/ most (because I share many of the same character flaws – though I share none of his works under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit). But Peter would not, did not, could not die for your sins.

If you would simply study scripture w/ the same zealousness which you study Catholic history & doctrine, you would see that for yourself. May God impart to you the grace He showed me & open your eyes.

So they said, "Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets." He said to them, "But WHO DO YOU SAY THAT I AM?"

Simon Peter {petros – piece of a rock} answered and said, "You are THE CHRIST, THE SON OF THE LIVING GOD."

JESUS ANSWERED and said to him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, FOR FLESH AND BLOOD HAS NOT REVEALED THIS TO YOU, BUT MY FATHER WHO IS IN HEAVEN. And I ALSO SAY to you that you are Peter (PETROS) {piece of a rock}, and on this rock (PETRA) {mass of rock, boulder} I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.

      Then He commanded His disciples that they should tell no one that He was Jesus the Christ. <{strange thing to say if the focus here is Peter (piece of a rock) being the foundation of the Church & the substitute (vicar) of Christ on earth}

The American cardinal best to fill the Pope’s shoes is ” Raymond Cardinal Burke!!” Anyone who hasn’t yet realizied that Christ birthed Only ONE Church while on earth and that is the Catholic Church…from Saint Peter on, need to do their homework, and with an ‘open mind’…Catholics can trace from Peter to this current Pope. No other religion/church can say the same. All other religions are MAN-MADE! Study! Read the Church Fathers from. St. Ireneus, St Polycarp (knew St. John the Evangelist) St. Jerome, St Ignatius of Antioch, St. Cyril of Jerusalem..etc… Read their writings…They were from the early first centuries, and hear what they had to say about the One, True Church! This is why Christ guaranteed that “the gates of hell shall not prevail against it”…Christ knew those of whom would try to destroy His church, but Catholic Christians (only Catholic Christians) have His word that His church that He birthed while on earth will Never prevail against the evil (ones) who have always and continue to try to destroy it. Or one could read the Bible (also called the Word of God by the early church fathers) & realize that there is ONE mediator between God & man – Christ Jesus (1st Timothy 2:5), who is A PRIEST FOREVER ACCORDING TO THE ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK. (Hebrews 7:21; Psalm 110:4).

Peter, who Paul clearly states (read Galatians 2) & scripture clearly maintains (e.g. 1 Peter 1:1 “an Apostle to the diaspora…,) was the Apostle to the Jews & was never called by Christ to be a vicar (substitute) of Christ. Please provide a scriptural reference. If you’re looking for a substitute Christ perhaps you should read 1st&2nd John where he addresses the matter.

Paul was the Apostle to the Gentiles (including Rome –he alone of the Apostles had Roman citizenship — where he appeared before Caesar)

Gabriel in visiting Mary clearly stated that Christ would rule from David’s throne [Luke 1:32]. For sake of argument, let’s say that the Pope was really intended by Christ to be His substitute on earth while He, Jesus, simply does nothing at the right hand of The Father [cuz His office of High Priest is not necessary because we’ve got it handled down here] .

My question is this, if Peter were the first vicar (Christ substitute), then why isn’t the seat of the Pope in Jerusalem – where David’s throne clearly is? Or if Christ really meant the Pope to be a gentile representative on a Roman seat, then why wasn’t the first pope not Paul who was the Apostle to Rome

” who started your offshoot religion? Martin Luther? Mary Baker Eddy? John and Charles Wesley? Joseph Smith? Charles Taze Russell? John Knox? Joseph Smith Jr? who?”

Jesus Christ – Yeshua The Messiah, the Only begotten Son of the Most High God. My Lord & My God. The Word of God & Creator (John 1).

Though it is a relationship, NOT a religion – for biblical religion is this: “Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world”. (James 1:27)

Awfully quiet PrayNC. Sorry if I burst your bubble – just know I’m commanded to do so for your sake, so that the truth will set you free. So in Christian Charity (agape) I’ll answer your other question:

Luke21…How was the word of God spread throughout the corners of the earth, when there was NO Bible for 1500 AFTER Christ walked the earth? Before the invention of the printing press?

Totally disagree. Christ in Luke 24 tells the two on the road to Emmaus “beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself”. (Luke 24:27). Clearly the existing scripture (what you would call the Old Testament) contains all the necessary information regarding Christ’s identity & purpose.

Paul who taught the New Testament out of the Old Testament commended the Bereans (Acts 17:11) for searching the scripture daily to test that what he told them was true. Clearly the Bereans had access to the Word of God.

Furthermore all of the New Testament cannon was written before the close of the first century. Saying the bible didn’t exist until 1500 yrs after Christ is nonsense.

Just because there were no printing presses doesn’t mean the Word of God didn’t exist. The printing press simply made possible the distribution of the Word of God to the masses at a price that even the poor could afford. Yet the word of God was around long before (that’s what scribes were for).

Don’t forget, it was the printing press that largely made possible the reformation – no longer were men prohibited from reading God’s word in Latin (which was not the original language of the manuscripts), they could read it in their own tongue.

God bless you & I still welcome a response to my first questions:

Please provide a scriptural reference where Christ or any of the Apostles states that Peter (or anyone) was to be a vicar (substitute) of Christ on earth. & If Peter, Apostle to Jews, were the first vicar (Christ substitute), then why isn’t the seat of the Pope in Jerusalem – where David’s throne clearly is? What contradictions would you be referring to friend?

As for the doctrine of the Trinity, you are asking for the finite to understand & fully describe to the finite, the infinite. All I can do is tell you that God (Theos) is spoken of as being ONE (a unity) yet in a plurality, through the persons of The Father, The Son, & The Holy Spirit.

Scripture teaches that all are God, yet One. It also teaches that there is a hierarchy (Jesus said “My Father and I are One” and “my Father is greater than I” – e.g. John chapter 10:30 & 14:28). God is ONE in purpose, thought, in deed – to do the Will of the Father. The Son is God – He’s the same nature of His Father (as you are of yours). Your father is/was man, & you are man.

To say that any man fully understands the nature of God is a misnomer. How can the finite fully understand the Infinite. How can the clay fully understand the potter? We understand that which our finite minds can based on what He has chosen to reveal to us through His prophets and His Son & disciples through the Word of God.

May the Lord reward your honest inquiry w/ His truth that leads to His saving grace.

No, Timothy will not be the next Pope… The Malachy vision from the 14th century says:::: the next Pope will be Peter The Roman. The only person that fits that bill is………Peter A Turkson Cardinal from Ghana. Google him and see from his writings who will be the next Pope.

Maybe…..However, you would be careful to note that Popes do not always take their titular name from their baptismal name. John Paul the First took his titular name from his immediate predecessors John the 23rd and Paul the 6th. John Paul the Second ( the Great) took his name from John Paul the First. Despite that difficulty, you do have the prophecies of St. Malachy in hand. Though it is to be pointed out that there is some controversy over whether De Gloria Olive or Petrus Romanus is the last Pope. Some say that the prophecies are not genuine. Time will tell, won’t it?

if you really believe in the prophecies being true and interpreted accurately…seeing as i don’t think they have been published word for word in the original language so you can translate them yourself… then you have to also believe in the two prophecies given to John Paul II…one by Mother Theresa and the other by the last surviving child from Lourdes which both John Paul was sworn to not even read until after the death of the lady that gave it to him…which foretold his death..and the events that would lead to the second coming of Christ….
but again…neither of those have been published in their entirity and original languages….in fact, I haven‘t heard ANY word about either of them since John Paul’s death, Mother Theresa’s, or the child (well very old woman) of Lourdes….

but yes…you also have to remember that Popes rarely take their own name as Pope and nearly always honor a past Pope or Theologian or Church Father with their Papal Name. that being said, when John Paul II died, there was strong talk about the next Pope being from Africa..Ethiopian or Kenyian, since the Catholic church is exploding in that part of the world….

Our churches are all corrupt. All have turned aside from the gospel. The Catholic Church in America is a liberal nightmare. Standing up against abortion is the only thing they seem to get. If anyone could be pope, it ain’t Dolan. Robert Barron would be a better pope…if I were a papist. Right now, seeing the groveling dhimmitude of the Roman faith as it quails in the face of The Religion of Everlasting Hate, I am not hopeful. If God’s church is to prevail against the machinations of Satan, we aren’t seeing it in the current leadership, which is all too eager to surrender their convictions.
    Lord, wake us up!

Here we go again. The Catholic bashers crawl out of the woodwork. Ignorance knows no bounds. No matter what anyone says in defence of the Catholic church, the bashers continue. Please read some accurate and intelligent books by Scott Hahn on the church and find out what Catholics really believe and why. It just might help your hatred to be set aside and true understanding to unfold.

I so agree! Also, watching the excellent Catholicism series done by Fr.Barron (catholicismseries.com) or reading wordonfire.org are helpful. Parts of the series are on You Tube. As a lifelong Catholic, I am learning so much through these. I agree that what is so irritating about the endless Left and Right attacks on Catholicism is that they are based on ignorance.

This may be wishful thinking, but it won’t happen. The Catholic church is universal, and there are those that believe the Americans already have too much power in the world to ever elect an American as Pope.

Watch it and weep. Have we completely done away with sin? Why would Christ come in the first place? To die for us sinners? Why bother….it’s all good. Tolerance is the new god.

@SCHERZO, Good link. The Catholic Church does openly welcome homosexuals. It does not however allow them to be married or live in an unchaste relationship. They are bound by the same laws as are single men and women. You have given the people an open invitation to see why Cardinal Dolan is so loved. The Catholic Church Is the true Church of Jesus Christ, and Cardinal Dolan is a great messenger of THE WORD.

@scherzo….Cardinal Dolan was not responsible for that. The Jesuit Provincal was. Jesuits fell off the deep end loooong ago when it comes to, as you say “kumbafrickinya”. Read Dolan’s book “Priests for the Third Millenium”, under the chapter titled Chastity he firmly asserts that homosexuality is wrong. I agree, with gr8tful1jim, we welcome them in, but we do NOT condone their behavior.

The papalcy is the Beast power spoken on in Revelation. This used to be common knowledge but has been lost through the generations. They are responsible for killing over 50 million Christians throughout the dark ages, changing the 10 commandments, and elevating themselves with equal authority as God. Don’t be deceived, ‘come out now from among them!!’

Wow..really…can you site anything other than some Catholic bashing hate filled religious bigotry website as your source…???
John Wesley..you know him right…modern father of the Protestant movement…whom most Evangelical and non denomination churches in America use as their chief scholar, theologian, and interpretor of the Bible… that John Wesley.. He LOVED the Catholic Church, saw nothing wrong with it or them, even though he admitted he disagreed with some of their practices and dogma but NOT their teaching on the Bible…and frequently REBUKED those that attended his events and questioned him on the “whore of Babylon” being the Catholic Church…..YEAH…doesn’t fit your little narrative does it…though so..

about the only denominations that I know of today that still preach HATRED and BIGOTY from the pulpit against the Catholic Church is the Calvary Chapel system (go into their bookstore sometime – they have entire walls about Catholics and catholism being a cult and false religion) and small town churches left over from the Protestant Revival movement in America from the 20‘s and 30’s.

The reason we are living out this nightmare in Washington is the Republican parties inability to give us a viable candidate to vote for. The Catholics aren’t going to be on board in 2012 due to the administrations current war on the Church. (capital C because the Catholic Church is the one true Church instituted by Jesus Christ) Again in 2012, the MSM has made it so no viable Republican will be on the ballot again. @gr8fuljim The Catholic church is satan’s version of a christian church which is a rehashed Babylonian system, and is a breeding ground for the other perverted doctrines because the catholic church breaks every command given from God. This is why Mormons, Jehovah’s witnesses and such target catholics. They do not know the Bible and if they did they would leave the catholic church like I did.
Lets look at the 10 commandments and where they stand.
No other Gods top 3 prayers Hail Mary, Rosary, Our father 2 of 3 are not to God add saints and you get even worse odds.
No graven images reality in Catholicism statues in every corner including statues of demons on the steeples, to keep out demons of course in case God or his angles miss one.
No killing, missed the mark on that one 60 million times and counting like satan’s version of Mcdonalds
No stealing plundered whole cities including the 60 mil. Stole from Christians and Jews
Adultry not too bad on this one unless you count alter boys and priests, but don’t let those priests get married.

Apostolic succession is a trick used to get Europeans to submit to church authority, that is why they kept people as illiterate as possible, and killed any one trying to translate the Bible out of Latin. This system is so evil Jesus tells people to get out of it. Rev 17 and 18. The church of Rome joins with the Anti Christ.
Beck should know better than to join this organization which is pure evil, not the people but the system i

I see both sides. Yes, the Catholics played a part, specifically, North East Catholics, as they outnumber all of the other faiths in the region, but it’s difficult to pin it solely on them.

That’s just simple numbers, folks. Afterall, if 54% of the 100 Catholics (if there are that many to be found) in Salt Lake City voted for Obama, would that have been a molecule in the drop in the ocean?

The other side of it is this: How many Catholics voted for Obama not because they’re Catholics, but because they’re North Easterners and much more likely to be infected with the disease that is a Left-leaning mind?

That‘s where you can’t pin it solely on them. A lot of people got hoodwinked by said disgrace and a lot more likely did exactly what Samuel L. Jackson admitted to doing- voting for him because of him being the first candidate with the right amount of melanin to the first black President. Some would call me racist for saying it. I call them racist not for saying it but for voting for him for that reason. Difference is, at least Samuel L. and I say it.

We need a “bold colors” Reagan-like Conservative to help snap these people out of the Left-leaning mess they’re in; someone who doesn’t walk around touting Centrism and Progressivism, who doesn’t idolize all of the biggest Progressive Presidents in history, and who speaks his mind despite what the Establishment would have him say.

@gratefuljim What part is not true? point it out. I have read more of the Bible than most catholic congregations and I follow it. So if you mean am I willing to plunder and kill you are correct i will not. This one true church is a Joke that was dismissed once people could read the Bible for themselves, That is why the Catholic church worked so hard at keeping people illiterate. Revelation has 7 churches which one was catholic? Again Apostolic succession is a bad joke on Catholics. If you can read turn to revelation argue with it or. Question why your church does not follow the book it claims to follow. I did and the answers were idiotic.
Q Why pray to Mary A What if Jesus is busy?
Q Where does it say that Mary is born Without sin(Imaculate Conception)? A That is church tradition.
Q where does it say that Mary or the saints can intercede? A That is church tradition as well
Q Is the Bible the infallible word of God A yes
Q Then why do you follow tradition over the Bible A ummmmmm church tradition
60 million killed millions more tortured and plundered
