Could New Riot Shield Technology Make It Hard for Unruly Crowds to Breathe?

Raytheon Seeking Patent to Make Riot Shields Noisy for Crowd DispersalAlthough it may look like an ordinary riot shield, a new patent filed by Raytheon could amp them up from defensive tool to an offensive crowd scattering device.

According to New Scientist, the company filed a patent for technology that would emit a low-frequency sound from a horn on the shield used by law enforcement. But it’s not the sound that would disperse crowds. New Scientist reports that the patent states the sound would resonate in the respiratory tract making it hard to breathe. The device’s effect could range from uncomfortable to “temporary incapacitation” of subjects.

New Scientist has more:

Acoustic devices haven’t seen wide adoption because their range is limited to a few tens of metres. The patent gets around this by introducing a “cohort mode” in which many shields are wirelessly networked so their output covers a wide area, like Roman legionaries locking their shields together. One shield acts as a master which controls the others, so that the acoustic beams combine effectively.

Sound technology to make crowds back down isn’t exactly new. In the U.S. police have used sound cannons to deliver messages to Occupy Wall Street protesters and in other situations, but such technology has been used in the past to help disperse crowds.

There is also technology out there to emit directed infra-red energy that warms human targets to an alarmingly uncomfortable yet perfectly safe level, and would be a good motivator to disperse a crowd. You could maybe slap that unit into a riot shield too.

      How true.
“The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. …
God forbid we should ever be twenty years without such a rebellion; what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms.” — Thomas Jefferson

I think it’s been more than 20 years since the last true rebellion against top down tyranny. We are in for a world of hurt before we are able to subdue our leaders and regain our liberties. Much blood will be shed if it is to truly happen. People will die, women and children even. It is the only way, proven in all history, to push the “rulers” back into submission to the constitution. If no blood is shed, then liberty will die and the usurpers will prevail in killing the constitution and all liberties.

The respiratory ‘track’(Thanks Blaze, you confirmed my point on another post how vocabulary and comprehension have gone WAY down in Amerika.) (tract) includes not just the lungs, but the sinus cavity and the trachea. Think of it as induced anaphylactic shock. The only way I see of achieving this, is if the frequency causes the trachea to swell, as well as the sinus cavity tissues, and restricting air flow in the lungs themselves. Very dangerous, in my opinion, for people that have asthma or COPD. Of course, there’s no way for riot troops to diagnose anyone in a given crowd as having any of these issues.

As a pepper spray Instructor, I can tell you that Pepper Spray will irritate the respiratory tract sufficiently to slow down a offender. The fact of the matter is that both devices are temporary. Im wondering if the leftists would prefer a return to the days of the wooden baton applied liberally to rioters body. It takes much longer for the subjects to recover from the effects of a impact weapon than pepper spray or noise. The leftists would prefer their version of a “fair fight” where they out number LE and can utilize whatever weapon they can fashion or get their hands against LE. That’s their version of “fair.”

The real threat is NOT that the weapons are harmful, it is the fact that they are viewed as SAFE and EFFECTIVE. A truncheon is a brutal weapon, and when the public sees them being used on innocent people there is an outcry. You would never see police pull batons on a sit-in today…it would be all over YouTube within hours, and there would be a public outcry.

With these weapons, the danger lies in the “no harm, no foul” mentality. Nobody gets permanently harmed, and so that makes it ok to use this weapon ANY time someone refuses to comply. It becomes a tool of intimidation for the state to discourage dissent.

On the surface what you’re saying makes sense, unfortunately mobs go hot almost instantly sometimes, and it‘s not an easy thing to judge when that’s going to happen. I’d hate to have an asthmatic child that I was walking down the street with when these shields go off. And we’re not even talking about intentionally either, maybe just somebody bumping a wrong switch.

Dunno. Seems to me that the range of pepper spray is quite small, in fact, targetable. Open air dispersion techniques, one would hope, would not pose the risk of killing a rather well known segment of society, lest accidents happen.

I think that you are being sincere. I carried that same notion for nearly 25 years. My father still wants desperately to hold to it. He is willing to vote for Newt, for example, because although he may be a Proggie, he is a right wing proggie. So the damage following his election might be reversible. A nice hope, but ultimately naive. As Americans (Non-Progressive Republican and Dem) we‘ve been following the ’path of least damage’ for a long time.

I use that example to attempt and make our point to you.
The more righteousness you attribute to the State then the more power you give them over the masses. Our forefathers knew this, the State cannot be the arbiter of good and evil as the Good is defined as ‘what is best for the State (the good of the many outweighs the needs of the few, or the one).
Your independence of thought and action is not in the State’s best interest as it leaves you with the power to determine if you wish to behave in such a manner. Thereby, you might be unwilling to devote your life to digging an economically unsound 1000mile canal for the greater glory of Josef Stalin. The point is: who determines which ‘action’ is worthy of such counter-measures.

Using the points stated and known past actions of our government and the not-quite State-run Media who would be targeted with these systems?
      A. Occupy Squatters.
      B. TEA party events.

Jensen Violet. Develop a spray on version and die them all purple. It will take two weeks for the die to wear off. Nobody will be injured, but …
OR some slimey sticky really smelly stuff sprayed on the crowds of rioters.
Either of those methods will be safe and effective. They could turn a crowd of rioting tea partiers into a group of slimy stinky purple people looking for a shower. It, or course, would not work on the OWS people – they are immune to dirt.
We have to keep those extremest Tea Partiers under control. They’re dangerous.
I just wrote this to show that there are other sickies our there who can figure out how to disperse crowds of those nasty Tea Partiers.

Ghost Agreed, when the mob mentality pops, it’s quick and can be quite intimidating. I just remember the Bank of America shooting and saw how ill prepared the officers were for that fiasco. You can pretty much “what if?” any situation to death. I guess I just want LE to be able to respond to a threat and contain it before it reaches me. As I said before, I do well keeping myself out of sketchy situations but am prepared to defend myself. Maybe its my zero tolerance level for those who can’t function in society and swear the world owes them something. I do have a reasonable expectstion of my fellow citizens to act in a civil manner.

What about deer musk? I’m sure being sprayed with animal urine might cool some of their ardor…

All will be surprised when Paul delivers the Independent and Blue Dog Democrat vote. Neither Romney nor Gingrich can attract those voters.

Ah don’t worry about it. Hear this: the people who are designing and using these shields, and the people ordering them to be used, those are the same people who have buried their treasures in the mountains of the people they have set themselves against. They will return to their treasure being worthless, and it is as such that God deals with them.

dude. Tract. Does it make more sense now? I understand if you have to go back and read it over again, remember to substitute tract for track and you will be fine. Use your head for something other than a hat rack.

I don‘t think that’s the problem! We have plenty of crowd control weapons, what we lack is the anyone in power to give the order to use them in stopping the protestors from costing the tax payers million of dollars in damage and lost sales and revenue!

Everyone here has just fallen to the Hegelian Dialectic: Problem-Response-Solution, aka Bottom-Up, Top-Down, Inside Out…the progressive left has set up trouble (OWS), to the point of rioting (PROBLEM) so that you get angry (RESPONSE), so they can sell you on expanding the police-state (SOLUTION)…

Don’t fall for this folks…the same technology will be used on YOU someday…

      @Wbalz

Our entire society is based on the Hegelian dialectic… most people are numb to it, so they wouldn’t even know when it bit them in the arse and clapped them in irons. After all, Hegelian dialectic is a modus operandi of the Illuminati, and of course, that‘s a ’tin-foil hat’ subject and therefore anethema, here on the Blaze.
