Community power-up stations have been cropping up in public places like airports for years now. Conversations about public charging stations for electric vehicles is growing as well. But who is, or will, pay for this electricity? And what of “electrical theft?”
With these questions and energy conservation in mind, Sony has recently released prototype technology for an outlet that would recognize a user and charge them accordingly.

Sony developed two types of “authentification outlets,” which were announced last month, one that uses contactless IC card technology and one that authenticates via a cable power supply. With such an outlet, power would only be supplied to authenticated equipment.
Here’s what Sony said about the outlet:
Once these “Authentication Outlets” are widely implemented, users will be able to authenticate the owners of electrical devices (e.g. home electric appliances, electrical vehicles), manage and consume electricity on a per-device basis in addition to authorizing their use, keep records of past electricity usage, and finally have the ability to be charged and then process payments for their electricity consumption by combining the aforementioned features with electronic money payments.

Watch this demonstration of the outlet from DigInfo TV:
On a larger scale, it is described in the demonstration that the technology can also help avoid blackouts by switching off non-vital equipment when demand is about to exceed supply.
Ars Technica explains that Sony sees a future for this in preventing “electricity theft” in, for example, the common area of an apartment building. Ars Technica reports that there is no commercial release planned for this technology yet. An official states that the company will be in conversations with the power supply industry and other manufacturers to eventually bring this prototype to fruition.

Posted on March 16, 2012 at 9:45pmIts absolutely frightening how the Green Movement is pushing manufacturers behind the scenes to clobber consumers for every device they own, every device on when they are plugged in, every device on how and when they are used according to time-of-day useage.
Report Post »It wouldn’t be much of switch to encorporate into the control units, NOPE ITS NOT YOUR TIME TO USE POWER. With Smart Metering, and government controlled energy grids. All you need is the Smart Device Plug connection with Blue Tooth technology to tell you that you cannot operate this machine, you have over consumed your ration of Green Energy. If you wish to purchase additional credits, Log On and submit your PayPal Credit Card. Fees of use though will be triple current market price and for one hour of use.

Posted on March 16, 2012 at 4:55pmAre they talking about those charge up car stations hogging the front of the DMV’s that are ALWAYS EMPTY OF CARS? Sadly, the DMV closet to me has a small parking lot but Tampa YOYO’s put 4 electric car parking slots in front of the building. There are more of them than handicapped parking. Since it is a corner lot DMV – no place to expand – so visitors forced to park across the street screwing those business owners.
Our DMV SHARES a building with 2 PRIVATE companies (auto insurance – how convenient and what appears be a travel company since I have to walk past luggage/travel crap and the insurance company to get to the DVM at the back of building. Don‘t know who owns the building but assume the Tampa gov’t does since no PRIVATE company would allow their customers to use their electricity FREE nor would they have installed 4 useless electric car parking slots .
Hopefully those two private companies are paying enough in rent to cover all the DMV bills – electric/water/gas/property taxes so taxpayers are off the hook. However, it makes sense if you use someone’s electricity to charge your car – you pay for it. Otherwise taxpayers or someone will have that cost passed onto them.
It’s enough these electric cars get thousands in tax rebates to buy them & MILLIONS in taxpayer subsidies AND people get to drive in the car pool lane when only 1 person is in car. CRONY capitalism is what exists today in the USA. . Our country is a shell of its constituti

What a moron! You can tell alot of his ideas come from other people because he does not have the skillset to follow-through and complete a task…he is use to others doing it! Well, his friends didn’t know a whole lot either! Now, we’re paying over $400K to have a soccer field put in there? Just where is the process of DUE DILLIGENCE with this administration?? Did they not “think” (opps, there’s a novel word) that electric outlets along the highways and byways will be needed for his little ole green cars to plug into? Opps! He does it again!

Posted on March 16, 2012 at 4:16pmIsn’t it the public who is paying for the electricity and the outlet, and the building in the first place? How many times are they going to charge us for this? Pretty soon, they will charge us for the air conditioning, the heating, the air that is consumed in public places. Maybe a turd tax will be next when we leave a deposit in a public restroom.

If Barry and the Bandits can claim all these health care services are free (the reason my coverage went up 65% from last year) then why can’t we have free energy? We can just have Barry declare energy to be FREE like he does with all kinds of other things. Free health care! Free contraception! Free Barry-Bucks!
Of course none of this is “free”. Don’t bother telling US that, tell Barry because his “free” programs are FAR WORSE than anything number of laptops charging at airports, and HE’S the one bankrupting the country.

Posted on March 16, 2012 at 3:59pm“Public” Outlets? I‘m not sure I’m against this actually. If the rate is equal to the rate of service provider itself, thus no profit nor tax added, then I say fine. That makes sense. Now, if it’s a “Private” Outlet. The user would have to agree to the terms of the outlet owner.

She had shopped here .. we knew that her bag would be overweight we looked up the fee $90 … it was $25 for up to 50 lbs for first bag .. and $35 for a second bag .. so we went and bought her a second bag .. savings $30. You have to check everything that they are charging for and what the charges are and then travel accordingly. OR stay home and avoid the hassel .. which is what I am doing.. not even driving this year .. with gas prices so high and could skyrocket at any minute.
